Sinful Things #1

Craving Sin

Rian

As head of the O’Shea family, I don’t make mistakes.

I certainly don’t become obsessed with a guy. Stalk him. And then proceed to kidnap him to a secluded cabin when an attempt on my life is made.

But that’s exactly what I did.

While my family hunts down the men who tried to kill me, Doctor Preston Abbott is trapped with me, and I expect him to nurse me back to health before paying the ultimate sacrifice. Abbott…who is also the governor’s son.

Each day my interest in him grows. He cares for me, shares parts of his life with me, willingly gives his body to me and begs for more…even though he knows he’ll die by my hand.

I never thought I would want someone again this way, that I would crave another person the way I do Abbott. He’s too good for the violence of my world, and all the sinful things I revel in. I’m a monster but he’s mine until the end.

Mine to crave…mine to touch…mine to kill…

Craving Sin contains MCs dealing with grief, violence, darker themes, and morally gray characters with no redemption arc. This is still a Riley Hart romance, so you can expect a happily ever after for our guys.

Rian + Abbott (Preston) 🖤
Captor and captive | Opposites attract | Age gap | Hurt comfort | Bi-awakening

Two sad men pretending to be okay. The sweetness and caring despite the situation they were in. The vulnerability they had with each other. Heart boner.
And one of my favorite lines ever, "what are you doing to me?", right before finally giving in 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

The unoriginal dirty talk had me removing a star though. Sick of reading the same lines from book to book.

This is a mafia dark romance, featuring Rian O’Shea and Preston Abbott, and is book one in the Sinful Things series.

Rian kidnaps Abbott and takes him to a secluded cabin after someone tries to kill him. As Abbott cares for Rian, their attraction grows, leaving Rian torn between the mafia world and his feelings for the man he was supposed to kill.

Loved this book, this book focus’s on Cillian’s dad, Cillian’s from the Sins Of The Father series. Rian and Abbott’s start is anything but romantic but has they are forced together, feelings grow, almost Stockholm Syndrome vibes. The other all mystery continues to the next book. We get to see cameos of all the boys in the Sins Of The Fathet series too. Love those boys.

I love this universe.

Things to expect in this book are:
Book 1 in series
MM dark romance
Mafia boss x doctor
Age gap (48/38)
MC with freckles & red hair
Hurt / Comfort
Stalking
Obsessive & possessive
Kidnapping
Captor x captive
Forced proximity
Only one bed
Bi awakening
Spicy times & dirty talk
First times
Facials & cum play
Olive oil as lube
Pining & Protective
Touch him and die vibes
“He’s mine” vibes
Calls him pretty thing
Mystery / suspense continues
HEA hint

I liked this story, especially because all of the main characters from the Sins of the Father series were included in such a wholesome way.
A good, dark , morally grey, forced close proximity story. Also, a sexy, filthy, steamy book.
Abbott's need to be wanted overrode his moral need to be good, leading him to accept the love of the head of the O'Shea crime family, Rian.
Rian had his bi awakening after noticing the doctor he obsesses over. The subsequent murder attempt brings them together in a dark, steamy, twisted adventure.

I'm so very happy Riley Hart decided to give Rian a happy ending, I've wanted this book since Rian was introduced in the 2nd book of the Sins of the Father series.

Rian O'Shea is the head of the Irish Mafia and he has been ruling the family business, along with his nephew Tiernan, since his brother Sloan died. Rian and Sloan were very different: Sloan was cruel and horrible, like their father, while Rian is still ruthless, but he also loves his family fiercely.
After his wife's death, years before the start of the story, Rian has been also a broken man: the regrets of making his wife living a hard life (not because he didn't love her, but because of the family affairs), the powerlessness of not being able of saving her from the illness that ended her life, his inability of showing his own son the love he felt for him because he subjected him to that kind of life too, all these things made Rian build up walls so high that he closed himself into a prison of grief and sadness.

Abbott is a sad man too: he lost his mother, the only person in the world who loved him, because of a robbery gone wrong; his absent and distant father, the Governor, never showed him a hint of affection, he kept his own son close only to appear like a devoted parent in the public eye. Abbott has also been living with the regret of having never exposed his father as the cheater he is, wondering if his mom would still be alive if she had had the chance of leaving him.

When Rian meets Abbott purely by chance in the hospital where he works as a surgeon and the younger man smiles at him, Rian feels like his body has gone into a shock and he can’t keep his distance from the handsome man.
A shooting in the hospital parking lot will set off a chain of events that will see Rian injured, Abbott kidnapped and both of them sharing a secluded house.

Having Abbott so close, it makes impossible to Rian to control his attraction: he feels tormented because not only because he knows very well that Abbott could turn out to be a liability for the family safety and that he needs to die, but also because, since Moira, Rian has never felt so emotionally close to another person in his life.

What I loved the most about Rian and Abbott’s relationship:
First, Abbott doesn’t lose himself into Rian’s world: he’s still a thoughtful man, a genuine person, he cares about not disrupting Rian’s relationship with his son and the other members of his family.
Second, Rian is not “healed” by Abbott: he’s still a very morally grey character, he doesn’t suddenly turn into a softie, but he pushes himself to be more open about his feelings, especially towards Cillian.
By allowing himself to accept Abbott’s love, it makes him more vulnerable and brave at the same time, he finds the courage to take risks with Cillian and he doesn’t let the fear of losing him keep him distant from the son he adores.

I think one of the most beautiful scenes of this story is indeed Rian and Cillian heartfelt conversation: I’m not ashamed to admit I cried, it was beautiful and emotional.
The sex scenes are scorching hot, Rian has no hesitation whatsoever in having intimacy with a man and the both of them share an incredible physical chemistry.

I loved to see the mini mob again! Cillian is incredibly mature, Ollie is the sweetest and Rory is still the chaos gremlin. I hope they will be present in the next books of this series too.
And speaking of the next book, it will be about Conan: I was hoping for a bi awakening for him too, since it’s clear that between him and Fia there’s only a platonic kind of love. I really hope that the release date listed is just a placeholder, I need that book soon!

Very much recommended (but read at least Sweet Vengeance first to have a better understanding of Rian and Cillian’s relationship)

I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review.

DNF 30%. Just not working for me. I believe it is safe from OM action/drama though, for those interested in a mafia read!

But the plot doesn't make sense. Widowed mafia don Rian first But then when he literally stalks the other MC, doctor Abbott, and then Abbott sees him Because...why? What? What's the difference? They both witnessed something Rian could .

There's also just no chemistry between them by now. Rian's grieving (I LOVED his love for his late wife, though hated the fallout and excuses made re: his son, Cillian) after decades, and has never been attracted to a man. Now something's tickling his neck (I'm guessing the wife from beyond) every time he sees Abbott, and then...this?

It doesn't make sense, and, there's no attraction/chemistry. It feels forced, basically, Rian stating, over and over, that he will eventually kill Abbott, a good, innocent person, for no strong motive, despite Abbott treating his injury. That moral code didn't work. I...lost interest.

Also note: There are obvious mistakes with verb tense, dangling modifiers, and repeated information introduced as if new. The book lists editors, so, I don't know what happened there. 🤷‍♀️

There is just something about contemporary mafia romances that hold a special place in my heart, this being Queer focused? Hell yes, I ate this up. I will never, ever turn down a MM book and if I do, please check on me because something is severely wrong.

Craving Sin is my first Riley Hart book and I loved her take on the Irish Mob. Rian is such a freaking softie for a Mobster, he flipped his whole world upside down over a neck tingle. A NECK TINGLE. The best representation of 'if he wanted to, he would' and Rian did. Abbott and Rian really had a sweet relationship, but once that twist came, I was all in on the plot. This is such a great morally grey, forced proximity read. I'll have to check out the kids' books to get more of feel for the characters and Rian's arc but this was a great introduction into Riley Hart's world.

Thank you to the Author Agency for this eARC, this is my honest review. 🖤

Cillian and Ollie's book is my favorite in the Sin's of the Father series so I was so intrigued for this book after seeing what Cillian's and Rian's strained relationship is like in that book. My heart huurrttttt for Rian so much with seeing how much love and care he has for everyone in his life but how he struggled so much to fully express and show it. I loved how the way Abbott is just so fully open with his feelings was able to help Rian with opening up to those around him.

I wasn't expecting the book to end on a cliffhanger (which is never my fav) and am wondering how this conflict will play out across another book. Mainly because so much of this conflict is Abbott specifically. But I am eagerly waiting until then!!!

Thank you Riley Hart and The Author Agency for an ARC of Craving Sin.

Too much preaching and life lessons from the very beginning. I feel like there are much better newly released books that I could be reading and enjoying instead of wasting my time on this. Not feeling this at all

This is easily one of the cringiest books I've ever read. The first 20% was somewhat decent, but after that? Pretty much unreadable.

And... dark romance? WHERE? LMAO. Apparently throwing in a few murders and torture scenes is all it takes to call something a dark romance these days.

Dark content doesn't automatically make a romance dark. The actual relationship and dynamic between the characters need to reflect that too, and I got absolutely none of that here.

At this point, it feels like some authors slap the “dark romance” label on anything because they know it'll sell better.

Cringe, disappointing, and definitely not the dark romance I was promised.

ARC REVIEW

So this all started with Rian getting some serious neck tingles while passing a doctor in the hospital. 😂

Rian, who is still lost after the death of his wife nine years ago, isn’t used to being interested in anyone, let alone a man.

So naturally, he follows Abbott… and that’s when three men start shooting at them. Rian pulls his gun, making Abbott a witness. And because Rian gets shot during the whole thing, having a doctor around suddenly comes in very handy. 😂

But now Rian has another problem: he can’t have Abbott going to the police and potentially putting him in jail, so he plans to kill him once everything settles.

Two weeks later, Abbott is very much alive 😂 and the only weapons being used are board games, longing looks, and kisses. We’ve got some reverse Stockholm syndrome going on here 😂😂😂

Against the wishes of his Irish mafia family, Rian eventually sets Abbott free.

I really enjoyed watching these two lost souls find each other. Rian finding love again after his wife’s death, and Abbott, who has never really experienced love since losing his mother.

And when Rian finally starts to love, he doesn’t hold back. Whatever the consequences, he chooses Abbott and fights for what they have they are so perfect for eachother ❤️

I really loved reading an MM mafia romance with an actual good plot! The danger isn’t completely resolved by the end, so I’m definitely looking forward to book 2 and Conan’s story.

I also didn’t realise there was a prequel series about the younger generation, so I’m definitely going to be reading those too! 👀

Read this if you like:

✨ Bi awakening of a big bad mafia boss
✨ A doctor who keeps his sass during kidnapping and murder threats
✨ A crazy mafia family
✨ Loving with body and soul
✨ “Nobody will ever hurt you again”
✨ Doctor/governor’s son x head of the Irish mafia

Riley Hart has done it again with Craving Sin. She honestly writes THE BEST queer mafia romance.
Rian was the character from the Sins of the Father series I'd been hoping would get his own book, so I went in with high expectations and he delivered. The forced proximity between Rian and Preston had such a good start, and the build up did not disappoint. I do love a remote cabin and a kidnapping plot that somehow leads to love. There's this constant tension that never lets up, and it's so good. Underneath all the darker, lives at stake elements, there's a real emotional piece about grief and letting your guard down that hits hard in the best way.
The plot kept me guessing as well which I love that. The quieter scenes land just as hard as the tense ones, which is a tough balance to pull off. By the end, I didn't want to leave these characters behind. The pacing was perfect.
If you're into dark, emotionally complex romance with a slow-burn forced proximity setup, this one delivers.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Sometimes you just have to kidnap the love of your life and hope for the best.

I got excited when I read this is a morally grey story with no redemption arc. I was also glad to find a romance with older men being the focus for a change rather than the typical college age romances(which I also enjoy).

The book immediately hits you with a heavy emotional scene surrounding Rian. I loved the two sides of Rians character. He’s a feared Mafia figure, but he also has a surprising amount of respect for his captive, Abbott. His gentle demeanor with Abbott is in direct contract to his “monster” persona others see him as. Abbot’s huge heart is showcased through his view of Rian as someone worthy of care, and attention whether Rian deserves it or not

I did feel a little lost in the first few chapters, and realized this one does tie into another series(The Sins of Our Fathers) despite this being the first one in this spin off series. This didn’t last long, and the focus of the book quickly shifts to our main couple, so this wasn’t an issue for me. I may actually go back and read that series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one and am already waiting for Conan’s story next. He was such an interesting character here.

I really loved the plot in here, so I'm excited to see where it's going in the next book. Also, kinda nice to read about MMCs that was older than 20 years 😊 Abbott was defiantly my favorite character, I just loved his vibes 😂

I will say though, the repetitive writing got a little bit tiresome at some points, but didn't deterred me from having a good time regardless!

Dnf @ 70%

Unfortunately, this book isn’t for me. I enjoyed the beginning. When Preston is first kidnapped he’s strong-willed and sassy, fighting Rian for his freedom every step of the way. The lead-up to the characters giving in to their attraction was interesting, especially knowing that Rian is planning on killing Preston right up to the time that they are together.

After their first time together I just got bored. It feels like Preston lost the bit of sass that he had at the beginning and became fairly generic. Rian’s relationship with his son was heartwarming but his book is on my dnr so I wasn’t very invested there either. I do think a lot of this is definitely a me issue. I think that I’ve read one too many books with this specific trope so there wasn’t anything new that made it stand out to others.

♦️Additional Info♦️

OM Drama: Rian is a widow and his previous wife is mentioned numerous times. This didn’t bother me because it wasn’t used as a comparison to his feelings for Preston and Preston didn’t act jealous towards their relationship.
Cheating: No
3rd Act Breakup: No as of 70%. (SPOILERS: Rian lets Preston go but he can’t stay away from him for long. I wouldn’t count the situation as a break-up, more a separation Rian thought they needed for Preston’s protection but doesn’t really end up happening for long)
Relationship Angst: Low

This book was interely too long. There was so much overexplanation of every thought and everything they said, and they kept repeating all the thoughts just with new words. Like give the reader som credit? We can actually understand things between the lines and don’t need to have every thought and feeling explained after every sentence spoken. I don’t know how the author didn’t get sick of writing the same stuff again and again.
I didn’t feel any chemistry between them because it was just telling and not showing. They had no real personalities, because we were just told how they act, we didn’t see it or feel it. So many words, so little action. The plot was really boring, it only got a bit exciting after like 80%. And calling this dark? Oh honey.

Also, the nickname ‘pretty thing’? Barf. You are both grown ass adults. Maybe that’s why the book didn’t work for me. They didn’t act their age. Or at least Abbott didn’t. He was too insecure and unsure of everything to be a 38 year old doctor.

And then the story doesn’t even wrap up and I have to read the next book??

Another note. Maybe the book would have been better if I read the other series with the sons. Because we heard a lot about all the characters from those books, that I didn’t care about because I haven’t read them.

4.75 rounded up!

Yeah, this mafia series, 'second gen' about the older guys gives me life. I was so intrigued when Riley announced we'd be getting a book about Cillian's dad. I knew he loved his wife like no other, and I also trusted Riley to honor that while not making it out to be a 'still in love with her' type of thing.

Rian had me in a chokehold. He was a sad boy™️and for good reason, but right when he was starting to piece his relationship with his son back together, he became enchanted with one look. I lived for this; it wasn't insta-love/lust, just a 'need to know more' thing that fit the man that Rian is. How the romance developed from there truly was beautiful. The openness and honesty, the learning and trust, grace and eventually love...yeah, so fucking good!

I do have to admit, I was a bit annoyed with Abbott. He was giving 'moral high ground' and needed to be knocked down a few. Thinking that antagonizing the guy who kidnapped you as homophobic made me giggle. My man doesn't have a straight kid in his house, and you think he's hating? I grew to love Abbott, though. He cared so much for both Rian and his family; he listened and understood that black and white are extremes, and people can live in the grey.

I need someone to sedate me until we get the next book, because the unanswered questions and that hint about what comes next have me climbing up walls. Can we move 2027 to tomorrow, please?

I'm once again floored by the honor of getting an early copy. TAA and Riley, just thank you!

ARC REVIEW

✨May contain spoilers✨

I freaking loved this book so much! When Riley comes out with a book, I know without a doubt that I have to snag a copy. I’ve been wanting Rian’s story since we met him in the previous books.

I was so happy to see Rian finally let go and be who he was meant to be - amazing. I just loved how Abbott is the one man or rather person he has looked at since he lost his wife. I love it when a character wakes up to these intense feelings that he’s never known before.

I was so glad we got to see some of our favorite characters from the previous books. This was such a fun time for the first book in this new series and man, I’m here for it.

I was so emotional for all the scenes with Rian and his kids because it was everything I didn’t know I needed until it was in front of me.

But when these two give in to their feelings; they are so gone for each other. I just love every sweet and everything about these two. Also; the spice is just so hot.

And Abbott. God, I felt for him in so many ways. The whole situation with him and his father was crazy but that’s what Riley does. She will surprise you.

And the ending! I need book two like right now.

I received a copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Review of an advanced reader copy.

When I tell you, I love me a good morally grey man.. but in this one Rian definitely takes second place to Abbott.

The book starts off very intense with a deep scene about Rian and his wife. While sad, I think this scene shared a great purpose, we were able to get a bit out of Rian outside of this crime lord persona… then he kidnaps my baby..

Abbott is fundamentally a good person at art, even under duress and faced with the idea of being kidnapped and killed his main focus is on the health and care of others. I truly adored his character and I hate, hate hated how much he had to go through.. especially with his family.

Overall I loved the banter between the two men, and I mean if there’s one way to get the guy you like, kidnapping him might have to be the option. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Anyways, this book isn’t too long, and the writing style doesn’t have too much downtime so it’s easy for you to get lost in the pages and continue reading with the nice flow of the story. I was definitely interested in some other characters that I now know are in previous stories so I may need to go back and read some of those.

Thank you to TAA and Riley for this copy. Happy Release Day!

The chemistry between Rian and Abbott!!! This book was so consuming. I couldn't put it down. Riley Heart always seams to make me fall in love with her characters. I love the way she waves a story and with having read the connecting series i was already intrigued and attached to Rian. This was such an emotional puch I didnt see coming. I appreciated and loved the maturity of both Rain and Abbott, its refreshing to read about middle aged people and their struggles. Being a Mafia boss isnt normal but the feeling and background of this story is so real.

Rian was just heartbroken, grief stricken and lost not looking for anything but he couldn't walk away from his feelings for Abbott even if he didn't understand it. Abbott is lonely and just as lost. I adored waching them fall in love. They had crazy chemistry and tension that became explosive sexy and hot. They are delicious together. What i like most was even though this was Rian's bi awakening he treated all the feelings and intimate moments like it was just another day, he accepted it and didnt question it. Abbott has a beautiful heart and the way he accepted Rian and didnt try to change him was amazing. Abbott became a safe place for a lost man. I love them.

I love the way their crazy story played out Riley Heart had me on the edge of my seat with how this was going to work out. I cant wait to read the in this series. Im hoping for the mysterious gruff Conan. The mini mafia was fun but I love these older guys even more.

Thank you Riley Heart and The Author Agency for this ARC. These are my honest opinions and feelings.

Rian is a crime boss. Unashamedly violent and totally in control. He takes care of, and loves his working family and is desperately trying to reconnect with his son after his wife’s death. He becomes intrigued with a doctor he sees and starts following him. Preston Abbott (“don’t call me Preston”) is a surgeon leaving the hospital one night when he realizes he’s being followed. As he confronts the man, gunshots ring out and Rian is hit. Rian forces Abbott to go with him to tend his wound. Thus begins the saga of Rian and Abbott.

I haven’t read the series that precedes this one so there was a bit of a disconnect when all the characters (and their actions) were brought into this book. But it didn’t last long and was explained enough that the confusion didn’t last.

I felt that Abbott was a little to accepting that Rian was going to murder him and even though Conan said the same thing he still kind of shrugged it off. (Maybe he knew he was in a Riley Hart book and knew there would be a happy ending). Sorry, I have a warped sense of humor.

I was really struck by how his soldiers felt about Rian. Their closeness was almost palpable, even when disagreeing. Their acceptance of Abbott happened fairly quickly.

A couple of surprises rounded out the story. I think this was a very successful book.

I was hooked on Rian's story right from the start. His past is heavy and painful and he's trying his best to repair his relationship with his son.

An interesting and engaging story unfolds as we learn more about Rian and Abbott. The mobster and the doctors. Slowly opening up and getting to know each other despite knowing that Abbott needs to die.

I loved the emotions and contradictions.

"What are you doing to me?" he asks.
"I don't know, " I answer honestly. "But I don't know what you're doing to me either ".

I haven't wanted anyone since her, and I know that doesn't bring you any peace. None  of it excuses what I've done and what I will do. I'm not a good man, Abbott, but you have given me something that I never thought I would have again. Something I never thought I would want again and something I won't want again after you're gone.

This is an exceptionally well written book that brought these men to life. I was fully invested in their unfolding story and was rooting for them to find a way to make the impossible possible.

Highly recommend. Can't wait for more from this world.

I was hooked the moment I started reading this book and it was so damn good. Rian and Abbott had me interested in their story from the beginning and I really enjoyed these two together. Rian is exactly the kind of morally grey man I want in a mafia romance. Ruthless, possessive, slightly unhinged and completely unapologetic about who he is. And then you have Abbott, who really has no business fitting into Rian’s world as well as he does, but somehow these two just work. The chemistry, the forced proximity, the obsession and the spice were all so f*cking good. I also enjoyed the littlw humourous moments that slipped in there because it made this seem a little more like a real thing.

There’s so much underneath both Rian and Abbott, especially with grief, family and just how damn lonely they’ve both been in different ways. I loved watching Rian let Abbott in and seeing that softer, protective side of him without suddenly turning him into a good guy. He’s still very much a dangerous man who does terrible things and I love that Riley Hart didn’t try to change that. I flew through this, loved being back in this world and now I’m impatiently waiting for Conan’s book next.

Craving Sin is the first book in the new Sinful Things series by @rileyhartwrites.

To say I’m excited for the next book to come out would be an understatement!

This book had my attention from the very first page.
Each character had issues that were front and center and also had well crafted side stories that helped create depth and made it impossible not to care about what was happening to each of them, be it Rian & Abbott, or Cillian, Conan, & the rest of the mafia family.

I’m a sucker for mafia romances in general. Throw in some forced proximity & I probably won’t be able to put it down. And I couldn't put this book down! AND the twist. Holy bananas.

I was rooting so hard for Rian & Abbott through this whole book. I really appreciated how Rian was written and how he developed as a character - there wasn’t
a big to-do about anything; no giant existential crisis involved…he was just Rian. Maybe that is unrealistic for a man with his mafia life; but are we reading fictional mafia romances for their accuracy? I’m definitely not!

Riley Hart definitely has an excellent start to what I hope is a nice, long series!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

10/10 recommend and I can’t wait to get the hard copy on my bookshelf!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Craving Sin is a spinoff from Riley Hart’s Sins of the Fathers series that focused on college aged students who were the children of the leaders of the O’Shea crime family. The fathers were seen in the earlier series, but this book and new Sinful Things series now focuses on the fathers themselves. The relationship between Rian and Abbott stands on its own in this book, but the sons are present in this book as well and I was glad that I knew all of the backstory.

Rian and Abbott were so good in this story. Abbott a doctor, Rian a mafia boss. The way Rian fell for Abbott was everything. I loved the back and forth between them. The dancer and chaos had me on the edge of my seat. I loved the twists and turns in this. It was intense and I was invested from beginning to end.

I enjoyed this book, but did find there were lulls throughout the story that pulled my focus. It was a bit boring at times and was missing some relationship development that would have made the book stronger. Despite this, I am excited for Conan's book!
