Stepping into the fae realm was just the beginning. Accepting her fate was half the battle. Now, the realms are readying for war, and a twist of fate threatens to change everything. All Auren has to do is survive long enough to fulfill the prophecy.
Auren Everton, a human with the blood of the gods, has found herself at the center of heartless schemes and deadly magic that are beyond what she was prepared for. Her mate, The High Lord of Calledan, sits in chains, battling threats from the outside world, and from within himself. His Trium, unrivaled in their loyalty, will do anything to help Auren get him back. But when unexpected visitors arrive with fate-altering claims, the foundation of everything the group once knew is shaken. As history is called into question, new alliances are forged, but it will soon become clear that not everyone is who or what they claimed to be.
Faced with new struggles of both the mind and the heart, Auren and her newfound family must determine what level of self-sacrifice they will go to for the ones they love, even if it means challenging fate.
One thing is certain: War is coming, and everyone will soon find out . . . there can be no light without darkness.
Malarie has had a passion for writing since she was young, and has always loved the worlds and realms of fantasy. She also has a particular fascination with ancient history and culture, which she enjoys weaving into her stories. She holds a bachelor's degree in Art from Texas State University, and when she's not writing, she can be found drawing or illustrating in her art room, or reading in her personal library. She lives in the Texas Hill Country with her husband, and the two enjoy traveling abroad whenever possible. Keep up with her on instagram: @abookshelfofmagic
This series has firmly secured its place as my all-time favorite, and the fact that we don't even have Book 3 yet says everything.
As much as I loved Book 1, Book 2 completely blew me away. If you haven't started this series yet, you're truly missing out on something special.
If you love immersive, beautifully descriptive storytelling that pulls you into the world and refuses to let go, this series is for you. Malarie's writing is exquisite—rich, captivating, and layered with details that make every page feel intentional. One of my favorite things about her storytelling is her ability to weave in Easter eggs where you least expect them, rewarding attentive readers in the most satisfying ways. And just when the tension reaches its peak, her perfectly timed comic relief reminds you why you're so attached to these characters in the first place.
And trust me when I say—you need to buckle up. This book is an emotional roller coaster. You'll laugh, cry, stress, cheer, and probably stare at a wall processing everything once you're finished. The journey Auren, Niall, and their crew embark on is unforgettable. Their relationships, loyalty, and unwavering devotion to one another create some of the most heartfelt moments in the story. I especially loved the banter between the men who have collectively decided that anyone who even thinks about hurting Auren will have to answer to all of them. There's just something about multiple protective men delivering variations of "touch her and die" that never gets old. Auren continues to shine as a heroine, stepping further into a destiny that feels both inevitable and hard-earned. Watching her grow while being surrounded by people willing to stand beside her through anything makes her journey even more compelling.
And then there's Nivelle. Nivelle is my girl. Without question, one of my favorite characters in the entire series. She is fierce, hilarious, unapologetically herself, and an absolute badass. Every scene she's in is better because she's there, and I desperately need more of her in future books. She was the perfect addition to an already incredible cast and quickly became a standout character for me.
By the time you reach the final page, you'll be desperate for more. I genuinely don't know how I'm supposed to survive the wait for the final book in this series. What I do know is that Malarie has built something truly special, and I have complete faith that she'll bring this story to the ending it deserves.
This book was incredible. I'm honestly shocked more people aren't talking about this series. If you loved When the Moon Hatched, there is a very good chance you'll absolutely devour these books. The immersive world-building, emotional depth, and unforgettable characters scratched the same itch for me while still feeling completely unique.
Well done, Malarie. I cannot wait to see how this story ends.
⚔️ Dark fantasy. Fated mates. Ancient magic. Found family. And a war that threatens to consume everything. ⚔️
If The Lies of Mortals was the spark, The Edge of Darkness is the wildfire. 🔥
Malarie Weber returns with a sequel that is darker, deeper, and even more emotionally devastating than the first book. The stakes are higher, the secrets cut sharper, and the bond between these characters feels stronger than ever. From the very first page, the story pulls you back into a world on the edge of collapse—where destiny is no longer something looming in the distance, but something actively unraveling around them.
Auren Everton continues to be one of my favorite fantasy heroines, even down to her name. It feels unique, powerful, and unforgettable in a way that perfectly reflects who she is, and Malarie gave her an identity that feels entirely her own in a genre where that can be hard to do. Watching her step further into her power while carrying the weight of prophecy, sacrifice, and impossible choices made her journey feel incredibly compelling. She’s fierce without losing her heart, and every challenge she faces only adds more depth to her character.
Malarie’s writing continues to be one of the strongest parts of this series. Her storytelling is immersive, richly detailed, and layered in a way that makes the world feel alive. Every scene feels intentional, and the pacing keeps you locked in from beginning to end. I truly love her writing style, and she has a way of making it really connect with the reader.
This book is also an emotional roller coaster in the best way possible. You will laugh, stress, cry, scream internally, and probably stare at a wall for a while after finishing. The emotional depth in these relationships—romantic, platonic, and familial—is what truly makes this series stand out for me.
By the final page, I was left desperate for more and emotionally unwell in the best possible way. The Edge of Darkness solidified this series as one of my all-time favorites, and I genuinely cannot wait to see how Malarie Weber brings everything together in the next book.
If you love: 🗡 dark fantasy 🗡 fated mates 🗡 slow burn romance 🗡 found family 🗡 prophecy & ancient magic 🗡 morally gray characters 🗡 touch her and die 🗡 emotional damage 🗡 fierce heroines 🗡 protective MMCs 🗡 fae courts & political tension 🗡 “who did this to you?” energy
…then The Edge of Darkness deserves a spot on your TBR immediately.
I need to talk about the beginning because I loved it! It took off right from where The Lies of Mortals ended in all the action. There's plotting and scheming, political court drama, romantic frustrations, revolutions, and just enough power tensions to excite anyone who picks this book up.
Also totally climactic scenes that really tore up my emotions as anyone in my vicinity could tell from the tears streaming down my cheeks to the absolute shock that was on my face reading the final four words.. Legit threw my kidle on the bed and stood shook by what I just read.
There is so much more information obtained by the use of multi-POV's. The different style of writing/reading allows an insight into more thoughts and emotions and it created deeper bonds with the characters and myself because of it. the multiple POV's offer a deeper insight into the new relationships developed during the plot. Yes its a lot of emotions and thoughts and voices all coming at you but they are all amazing and incredible in their own way. A few new couples quickly made their way to my favorites and I loved seeing them manifesting into a heart stopping romance. I highlighted so many beautiful quotes while i read my clippings in my kindle are filled with sweet romantic words shared between these couples.
On top of all that you've also got: Dionachs - Basically fallen angel like winged sworn warriors to give their life for their charges. Dreki - you can call them dragons but more unique Witches - Really popping off with my girl Nivelle here!! Gods and Goddesses - No explanantion needed, every great fantasy read has to have em! Fae - Because we can never get enough Unknown magic - Adds a little Pizazz to the read Magical Stones - giving off thanos avengers endgame energy
THANK YOU SO MUCH MALARIE WEBER FOR THE ARC READ!!! I CANNOT WAIT FOR BOOK 3!!
Wow. It's 5:30 a.m. and I just finished this. I'm not even sure I have enough words to properly complete a sentence so here's what I've got: Incredible. Fierce. Compelling. Action-packed. Swoon-worthy. Tragic. Exciting. Dark. Deadly.
Malarie has truly outdone herself with this. Yes, it's lengthy but it doesn't feel like it is. Like Lies of Mortals, I eagerly consumed each word, every character, and all of the intricately weaved plotlines throughout.
Auren and Niall are all I want them to be and then some. Their chemistry, the banter, the spice and their bond was everything.
But the side characters, though I'm loathe to reduce them to that because they are so much more, truly steal the scene. I love how we get POVs from the Trium in this, as well as Auren and Niall. Remic, Rioardan and Aremis truly shine in this book.
Maeson and Nivelle are stars in their own right, and I was so impressed with how fierce Nivelle was. And let's not forget Silas, Breck and Weston, my guys from book 1 who also stole my heart a little.
I feel like this could have been wrapped up as a duet with a few more chapters, but that little wtf moment at the end leads to another book and let me tell you: I'm not mad at it. I am really looking forward to seeing what happens next.
And Malarie, if you read this: I have a bone to pick with you. Ma'am, you know what you did and I am not pleased! You have broken me, and we will discuss this later.
SIX STAR READ !!! ARC REVIEW ✨✨✨✨✨✨ TLOM was a great read but this book was a league of its own. Picking up right where we left off and not stoping. I was blown away by the plot twists and how all the pieces fell. My heart ached from the POVS of the male characters. Feeling their vulnerability, insecurities and their love for their brotherhood. Every single page had a purpose in this novel and that is rare to find. The expansive world building and the use of the Gods and fates in this book was so interesting I was hooked. Even the newly introduced characters became favourites quickly and served a higher purpose in this novel. I can’t rave enough about it or sum up the emotional rollercoaster that is this book. I laughed, smiled, gasped and the last 150 pages RUINED me. Like sitting in bed sobbing ruined me. The cliffhanger ending had me wanting to scream and I just know the darkness of the next book is going to cause some serious emotional damage and I am here for it.
If you are looking for a fantasy novel series that has relatable characters, epic lore, romance and a plot that will leave you wanting more then pick up The lies of mortals. And if you are looking for a book that is filled with brotherhood, yerning, romance , epic plot twists that you would never see coming, non stop ( and I mean non stop) action, that will have you on the edge of your seat - then pick up book two The Edge of Darkness in TLOM series. Just make sure you bring the tissues.
I cannot say enough good things about The Edge of Darkness! It picks up right where The Lies of Mortals leaves off (and includes a recap which is amazing) and you are immediately thrown into action. The world building went even deeper and the character development was outstanding. I love getting multiple POV’s and getting that peak inside other characters brains (looking at you Niall!) and seeing the story progress through their eyes. The banter is snappy, the spice spices in the right way, the fight scenes are fierce, and the ending is killer!! When can we get book 3?!? 5 ⭐️
This book two in the lies of mortals series. I loved book one and was so excited to dive into book two! The first half of this book was slower than i expected and but push through because the second half is amazing. I really enjoyed getting other characters perspectives-and at times wanted more of them than the main characters. I cant wait to see where the characters and world go. Get around this amazing series!
I didn’t think I could love a book as much as I loved book 1 - but this did not disappoint! It has put me through so many emotions that I sit here traumatised but also completely in love with this series. Also - Roirdan is possibly my new favourite!
Thank you so much to Malarie for having me on your street team and sending me an arc of this book. I have loved every second of reading it.
Wow wow wow. What a fantastic sequel to the lies of mortals. The emotions just build throughout this book as you head to the final gut wrenching chapters. So happy to have received an ARC of The Edge of Darkness and I can’t wait to see where Malarie takes this next.
Let me start with if you haven’t started the Lies of Mortals, what on earth are you doing?! RUN! The artwork, the side by side STUNNER on your shelf, and a gorgeous action packed story…. What more could you want? ✨
Back to the spoiler free goods!
As much as I loved The Lies of Mortals, this one was incredible!!!! Every one knows that I love fantasy with world building AND multiple POV’s…. This one made me love TLOM series even more! I cannot elaborate how much I love this action packed epic fantasy!
Auren and Niall are just everything. Their banter and chemistry…. 🔥🖤
@abookshelfofmagic THANK YOU. Thank you for creating this world and sending me these beautiful ARCs. You’re a gem, and this world is magnificent. Also, I can’t (well, begrudgingly can) wait for the next one. 🖤
This book starts up right where book 1 ends! I loved the different POV’s in this sequel and the flushing out of the side characters. Of course still love our two main characters and their relationship. The middle felt slightly slow to me but the ending was crazy and action packed! 🤭
If you’re a fan of action packed romantasy this is for sure for you!
