This was the strongest issue this book has had in a while.
Most of the students take a back seat in this issue. We do not indulge any teen drama from Calico, Deathdream, Jitter, or Ransom. Instead, the story is divided into an A-plot involving Rogue and Gambit trying to exorcise Remy's draconic infection, and a B-plot involving the adult X-Men in Louisiana meeting a feral mutant boy.
The boy, "Howler," so far has an unremarkable powerset. He looks like a humanoid hyena, for all that he is still capable of speech and wearing clothes. Monet talks to him, and her telepathy judges that his mind is like her sister's. For those in the know, this means that she thinks he's autistic, like her sister Nicole. Although, I'm not sure we should trust her diagnosis, given how she only interacted with Howler for a few minutes and spoke to him in that time, whereas her autistic sister presents as completely nonverbal.
The boy's introduction is more valuable for tugging at our heart strings. He repeated the idea that he is "not allowed in the house," and it was made clear that some group of handlers had been torturing him and treating him as if he were an actual dog. The reader sympathizes, and we like the fact the adult X-Men talked among themselves about hunting these people down.
In this way, the book succeeds in painting the X-Men as pure heroes. They take care of abused children and hunt down child abusers? They show kindness even to a mutant who looks like a monster? All main X-Men themes.

We're headed in a little bit more of a gothic horror direction.
I really love this run. Gail Simone and all of the artists who have contributed to this series over the last 35 issues have done a great job. We've had a lot of coherent storytelling. We've had a couple of stories that really hit for me and some crossovers too that were cool. I just think this book has some amazing characters and I'm excited for where we're going next. We got a lot of Castlevania esque stuff coming up it seems.

Man, I love these Sentinel x Attack on Titan designs. They are so creepy and cool. Rogue is showing her commitment and this poor boy and the torment he must have endured.
