'I am familiar with the operation of these orbital shields. The Empire deployed one above Scarif. This one appears to use similar tech.'Every issue I have with Charles Soule can be found here. First, there are three lines where one would have been enough. Second, two of those lines are saying the same thing. Three, he doesn't trust that fans will get the reference when they see the shield. And four, he isn't writing for people who might not have seen Rogue One, only super fans (In that vein, the close up of Pryde's face when he says he serves Kylo and Kylo 'alone' is also meant for fans only). He also can't help himself: he has to include at least one feature from one of his own projects. That's why we witness the First Order's conquest of Hetzal Prime, a world Soule introduced in Light of the Jedi (although I will conceed that Soule resisted the urge to explain the entire of Hetzal's history, as he often does). #1 also falls into another Soule trap: overexplanation over action. Soule loves to rely on speeches and long winded explanations rather than short and sweet dialogue relying on subtext. The result is that #1 is very wordey, often needlessly so (especially in the midst of battle), rather than relying on action. Readers don't need to male any effort to understand what Soule's trying to do: it's all spelt-out.
