My Guide Dog Is a Wolf Shifter

Rate this book
It started as a terrible plan. Then he caught feelings.

Jason needs to disappear. So his friends hand him the worst idea become a guide dog.

Violet didn’t move to a quiet little town to become “the brave blind girl.” She came for independence. For a fresh start. For the chance to figure out who she is now after spending the last year rebuilding her life after losing her sight.

So when an enormous guide dog named Jason shows up for a trial match, Violet says yes…

Then Human Jason knocks on her door.

He’s supposedly a cooking instructor for visually impaired clients. He’s charming in a way that should be illegal. And the fact that he shares a name with her dog is the kind of cosmic joke that makes Violet want to fight the universe in a parking lot.

Between grocery-store commentary, weekly lessons, and one wildly inconvenient flutter in Violet’s stomach, her world starts getting bigger again.

Jason thought he was just choosing the safest place to hide. Violet thought she was just choosing her independence back.

Neither of them planned on the part where ‘temporary’ gets complicated.

⋆˙⟡Pre-read⋆˙⟡: Recently released, interesting concept… sign. me. uppp.

★★☆☆☆ questioning my existence right now

✧˖°.Post-read✧˖°.: Well that was anti-climatic. The ending I mean. And well the entire story. Don’t get me wrong, the book wasn’t a complete dumpster fire… just a minor one.

Like some bits, made me smile, laugh. Other parts I was like… what am I reading right now. And honestly, dare I say it, ai? It felt like there was ai. Just how things were worded sometimes… it felt off. But I’m not 100% sure just… I wouldn’t be surprised.

I mean the cover is obviously ai, so I shouldn’t be surprised if anything if there is.

I mean the characters weren’t… terrible. Violet was a very strong female character you fell in love with. Jason was doing whatever he could for his pack, and then for her.

But a lot of it just didn’t make sense, like how did Jason have a phone? Genuinely? They’re practically homeless with barely the clothes on their back. Yet he has a full serviced phone. And then just so many other things I cannot even big to list off, (I mean I could. But… we’d be here all day)

I guess one of my biggest issues was the ending. !! Spoilers ahead !!

And that’s it.

Like how did it go from “we’re gonna kill you and your girlfriend” to suddenly “come here and watch your girlfriend’s meemaw and I have a drinking contest. Oh and on top of that, let’s be best friends.” (Okay that part was actually pretty funny, but only because I could not wrap my head around what I was reading.)

But at the end of the day maybe I’m being dramatic. But… it was just not there for me at all. And I’m so happy it’s over.

⋆˙⟡Favorite Quote⋆˙⟡: “Crispy bacon equals crispy confidence.”

✧˖°.Final Thoughts✧˖°.: This book felt like a first draft from wattpad tbh. I am very underwhelmed and under satisfied, it sucks because this book has 4.17 rating on Goodreads and it just… was not that for me. But props to everyone who loved it.💋💋

I mean the plot was full of ridiculous holes and random crap that made zero sense, but I was all in on the vibes. Definitely a fun concept with the guide dog actually being a shifter in hiding but the story wasn’t fleshed out enough to actually make sense.

In what world does a pack of wolves hunting 3 rogues get thrown off their trail because they decided to hide in a humans house and camp in the woods?? Why did Beau and Froggy insist Jason stay in the house to “hide” while they camped in the woods, apparently totally safe?? Why would they be in any less danger than Jason? It makes no sense.

If beau scrounged up enough money to get one fake ID, why did he think it needed to go to Jason and that he’d be safe to stay behind??

If these 3 guys “slept under porches” and scrounged garbages to eat their whole lives, how in the hell did he learn to cook like a real chef?? From what I gathered, they’ve never had a real house, so?

Why the actual flying fuck would Fiona (one of the alphas’ daughters) want to be with Beau after all is said and done?? HE SLEPT WITH HER COUSIN “accidentally”! That’s what started this whole stupid thing!! And never a mention of her cousin. Did she want Beau too? Was she pissed? Was Fiona being a raging bitch by getting to Beau first?? I need more information because this is insane.

Did they never interact with humans? Did they go to school? How did they learn to read? Where did they get clothes? How come no pack ever took them in, everyone treated them like pariahs but then these 2 alphas say that it was wrong for their home back to exile 3 kids like that??

And also, what the heck was that “virus” that killed these 3 kids moms?? It never came back up?? All 3 of them lost their moms to the same virus in the same time period? What was that?

So really, none of it made sense, but I liked the premise enough to look past all the holes. I liked the bones of the story, but the details seemed completely random and thrown together with zero thought or planning.

I knew what I was getting into with another Roxie Ray read, but can a GOOD author PLEASE do their version of this trope and make it actually make sense?? I need a re-do of the guide dog is actually a shifter trope. It could have been so good.

Uncomfortable.

This book reads like a sighted person used what they expect a blind person to experience and a quick Google search. I am visually impaired and I am friends with several blind and visually impaired people and I read to 52% and laughed. I couldn't get to the romance because I was just cringing.

You need an editor to fix mistakes, but the story started out good but it just drugged out until I just skipped a lot of it to the end. The alpha is following them didn’t make a lot of sense. The what they owe the alpha didn’t make a lot of it was just difficult to read.

I really liked it until the ending. The ending just kinda pissed me off. This is extremely spoilery so only read this is you don't plan to read the book. Freddie sucks. There was a little bit of foreshadowing, they gave him rogue traits for fucks sake, but ultimately, him stealing from Violet and then betraying his trauma bond brothers felt like way out of left field for the situation. That sucked. And being re-exiled, even for good reason, felt so cruel for a feel good book.

Also the twin pack. They were set up as cruel, deviant, sloppy, fucked up, stupid, and criminal. Their redemption felt slimy and disgusting and absolutely unearned. I've literally got the biggest ick face on right now even just thinking about it. To go from being extra Disney villain vibes to found family? No. They were literally introduced as the cruelest pack on US soil. If a redemption was in the cards, they should have just been overprotective of the daughters. And speaking of, weren't there two? And now there's just one and she's left her pack for the non-pack that Jason starts? Without asking him first? Yeah okay, like that's how wolf dynamics work. *rolls eyes*

This went from decently okay to downright ick in the last quarter, and I'm so disappointed.

My Guide Dog is a Wolf Shifter

This is not your typical fated mate werewolf romantasy, but it pulls you into the story in the most unexpected way. The bond between human and guide dog is already powerful… but adding a wolf shifter element? Can only lead to expected trouble, in the most endearing way. That’s what Violet soon discovers when dog-Jason walks into her life…

The story explores belonging. It’s not just about magic or mystery — it’s about finding your place in the world, even when you feel different, lost, or unsure if you even deserve it. That emotional thread runs deep and makes the story linger after you’ve turned the last page

And then there’s Meemaw… 😂
Honestly, she stole every scene she walked into. Whether she was side-eyeing suspicious “dogs”, dropping unfiltered one-liners or acting like she knows exactly what’s going on (and probably does), she brought the perfect dose of humor to balance the emotional moments.
The characters felt warm and real, and the connection between them grew in a natural, heartfelt way. There’s a softness to the storytelling, balanced beautifully with intrigue and just enough tension to keep you hooked.

If you enjoy:
✨ Unique twists on familiar tropes
✨ Stories about connection, trust, and finding where you belong
…then this is definitely one to add to your list.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A gentle, magical read that reminds you that sometimes, the place you’re meant to be finds you.

The title of this book is a bit silly but don’t let it put you off because inside is a real sweet story. Violet is living a pretty good life when she is in a catastrophic accident and loses her vision and is trying her best to cope but is struggling. She decides a guide dog would be of great benefit.
Meanwhile, Jason, a wolf shifter and his two friends are in a world of trouble. They were all kicked out of their pack when each of their mother’s died and no one wanted to take them in. They’ve done their best but it’s been a real struggle. They are lonely for a pack of their own. They are often hungry, with no real shelter and nowhere to call home.
They get into trouble with one of the biggest and meanest pack in the area and Jason, the leaded of the three is about to be mauled to death when he manages to fool them allowing for their temporary release. But if they don’t succeed in the made up challenge, it’s lights out for all three.

They are being watched and followed when , in wolf form, they stumble across a young woman, Violet, being led by a horse which shies away, runs and throws Violet off Thorne. Being lost and blind, Jason and friends come to her rescue and the three of them come up with a plan to hide in plain sight and he will become her guide. Because she is blind, she’s unaware he’s a wolf.

This is a delightful story with two likeable and well written people/wolf shifter falling in love. It’s sweet and I liked it.

There are some plot holes but if you put them aside and just enjoy the ride, I think you’ll very much enjoy it. I did and I give it the thumbs up.

This was lovely. I thought it would be a rom-com from the title and cover... but it's much heavier/darker than I expected.

It's beautiful, too.

At the beginning of the book, we get to see some dark times for both main characters. We're with Violet as she loses her sight and with Jason, when his life is on the line. It's not a light-hearted story for much of it. Violet is awesome and kickass and Jason is so caring and nurturing. I love how the author turns things on their head with them.

There is so much here that is beautifully done... but there's a little missing. This definitely seems like it should be part of a series, but it looks like it's a standalone.

This has a gorgeous cover and I thought this concept was hilarious! And the first quarter of this novel really had me but then it lost me.

We follow Violet, who gets into an accident and loses her eyesight. We also follow Jason who is a werewolf on the run. He gets the idea to become her service dog. He falls in love with her then introduces himself as a human(with the same name???) and wins her over.

I felt their love was forced and it was so weird the way they used her blindness to their advantage?? And I swear if I see the word Jason again I'm gonna scream it's gotta be used at least 200+ times.

The werewolf subplot(?) made no sense and the resolution even less. I thought this was an interesting concept but the execution left much to be desired. I just wanted it to end by the end then it was like 3 epilogues.

DNF by chapter 8

I was bored by the end of chapter 2 and started mass skipping drawn-out repetitive internal monologues. Waited a couple days hoping it was just my mood that day, as it's rare I DNF books. Reached chapter 8 tonight, read half a page, and was bored again, so I gave up on it. It's such a shame because the premise sounded interesting, but it reads as if the book has no soul. Does anything happen in the story? Maybe, but I never got there.

I did scroll to the end so the author gets their KU royalties, but I can't recommend anyone bother reading this book.

THIS HAD SUCH PROMISED I AM SO DISAPPOINTED. It started a bit slow but once it got going I was like okay this is actually hilarious and then….. stall. The story is just too rudimentary. Not enough fleshed out feelings. It needs more time and thought into developing the characters - would’ve loved more funny interactions between the FMC and dog-Jason. Just so much missed opportunity, smh. Also YES I did see this on a Facebook ad and immediately had to read it - how could I not?

(3.5) ARC review - My Guide dog is a Wolf Shifter by Roxie Ray.

This was a cute and cozy story of a wolf who made bad choices and ended up winning the jackpot.

Violet was a strong FMC who was not brought down by her accident and going blind. She was still full of hope and not one of those winey FMC’s that annoys the crap out of you. She was a fun and likable character.

Jason in all forms was quite interesting. The “golden retriever” wolf type. At some point he was slightly annoying when it came to the alphas and choices he made that I just didn’t think was rational. But that’s just me :)
Overall I love Beau more, he was a gentle giant.

The story was easy to follow once everything came together. The writing style was also easy to read and funny.
Unfortunately I had to take the rating down due to the excessive use of God’s name in vain and felt it was unnecessary.

I will recommend to readers who enjoys semi spicy shifter romcom with an awesome granny.

Well, well, well what can I say? finally, a book that is written about a blind person that’s actually factual, hilarious, and where there’s no miracle magical ending that changes the persons eyesight. I think this author did an amazing job writing a fantasy book that has a blind person in it. There was stuff from Life that she incorporated that Blind people use every day. I know that because I’m also blind and using Be My Eyes is such a Key part of seeing the world in a different light. There’s some aspects that needed to be home. For example, buying people don’t touch peoples faces to see how they look, however, everything else was spot on! I think this author did such an amazing job, bringing these characters to life, and not making her main female character be seen as a weakling. this story had found family, amazing animals, and most importantly great food. I can’t say how much I love the cooking scenes between her and jason. I can’t wait to see no pun intended. What’s next on this other books

This entire book felt like somebody fed prompts into ChatGPT and stitched the outputs together. Within the first two chapters we get car crashes, blindness, rejection, and getting shot at, only for the story to abruptly pivot into a quirky romantic comedy where most of the “humor” comes from the MMC’s friends psychologically tormenting and confusing the MFC.
The villains are laughably incompetent. At one point, Jason basically says, “Don’t worry, my friends have money,” and the antagonist responds literally with “speak more” before giving him a week to come up with it. It reads like an over-the-top 1980s action movie, except the book wants us to take it seriously. The author clearly wanted to write a romantic comedy but had no idea how to organically get the characters there, so the “on the run from dangerous criminals” plot feels half-baked and unnecessary.
The characters themselves aren’t unlikeable, but they’re incredibly hard to connect with because their relationships develop at lightning speed without enough meaningful interaction to justify it. We’re constantly told these people care deeply about each other, but we barely know them. When Buff says Violet is the only person Jason will run toward instead of away from, it’s supposed to be emotional, but there just isn’t enough substance behind their bond for it to land. We know almost nothing about these characters outside of a few vague backstory details dropped early on.
The romance itself is predictable but occasionally cute. Some of the awkward interactions actually feel authentic and grounded. But then the dialogue suddenly veers into chronically online territory. At one point the MFC says she’d rather know if “a psycho is on the loose than be surprised when he’s unaliving me.” You are writing a published novel. You can say “kill.” This isn't TikTok
Ironically, the strongest part of the book is the trauma. The author genuinely does a good job portraying vulnerability, fear, grief, and the emotional adjustment to disability. There are moments where the writing feels raw and sincere. And then it gets immediately undercut by lines like:
“Something about him makes my stomach do this ridiculous fluttery thing, like my insides have been hit by Cupid’s taser.”
Ma’am. She is talking about her dog.
And yes, I know he’s secretly a wolf shifter, but she doesn’t know that yet. Falling in love with your magical wolf-man after building trust and emotional intimacy is one thing. Developing romantic butterflies over what is, to you, literally just a dog is another. The book never fully escapes how bizarre that dynamic feels.
The ending is also incredibly rushed and awkward. Violet walks into what’s essentially a death sentence and starts giving dramatic speeches about how Jason saved her, despite the fact they’ve only known each other for about two weeks. Then suddenly the entire wolf pack respects her, everyone is showering her family with compliments, and her family just casually accepts that werewolves exist and that a group of them is about to execute someone. No real emotional fallout, no disbelief, no conflict, everyone just rolls with it immediately.
I mean, it's so ridiculous that the 'defiling' of the daughters that was part of the reason they were going to be executed ended with one of the daughters saying that she wanted to marry buff and the alphas agreeing to it. It's like, if you were going to just agree to buff marrying one of the girls then why was it such a big deal that he had sex with her to begin with? And why are you trying to kill Jason because he lipped off a little about it? Then the alphas are buddy buddy with everybody including Jason and they have a celebratory feast for the betrothal. Just none of it makes any sense.
Overall, this book feels like the author had a fun concept but no real idea how to flesh it out in a believable or cohesive way. There are glimpses of strong emotional writing buried in here, but they’re constantly sabotaged by bizarre tonal shifts, shallow character development, awkward dialogue, and rushed plotting. It wasn’t terrible in a “rage read” way, but it absolutely felt poorly executed.

I read the Black Claw series by this author and wasn’t impressed, so I hadn't picked up any of her other books.

Then My Guide Dog is a Wolf Shifter kept popping up on my Instagram, and the premise is genius. So against my better judgment, I gave it a chance.
(Unfortunately, I also have absurdly strict DNF rules, which meant I had to carry the full burden of finishing this book to my own detriment.)

Like her other books, this one leans hard on the “small town” or isolated setting, which mostly feels like a way to stretch suspension of disbelief as far as it will go. It gives the story more room to get away with things that do not make sense, but it also makes the writing feel lazy and, honestly, boring. The worldbuilding is paper-thin. Anything unexplained just gets waved away with “wolf magic.” That is literally the explanation. “Wolf magic.” That is what we get. And while I was grateful there was no Moon Goddess brouhaha, there was also no fated mates and no claiming bite, so really... womp, womp, womp.
The plot was shaky, full of holes the size of the Mariana Trench, and completely lacking in tension/suspense. I kept waiting for the payoff, whether through the FMC discovering the truth or the MMC finally confronting the twins, but it never came. You. Never. Get. It.

Also, this author seems determined to write the same FMC over and over again: a woman either running away to restart her life or returning home to restart her life. At this point, it is so predictable that it drains the character of any real intrigue. Yes, yes, the characters are sweet. But memorable? Not even a little. And that same blandness bleeds into the romance. The characters are nice enough, but at what cost? The vanilla energy is such a mood killer that the spicy scenes might as well have been closed door, because nothing about them was remotely tantalizing.
Characters with a tragic backstory, aren't interesting by default.

The writing did not help any of this. The first half, especially where the MMC was concerned, was overloaded with similes and metaphors that either made no sense or felt wildly exaggerated. It honestly read like the kind of prose that makes you wonder whether AI helped write it. On top of that, there were lines that felt painfully forced into that “look at us, we’re wholesome small-town people” style of dialogue, and it was more cringe than charming.

I'm adding the author to my Do Not Read Again list.

I’m giving it 1.5 stars because the author took time to write the book, and there were some parts that weren’t trash… like a few scenes. It felt very… wattpad. I felt like Violet was too oblivious and trusting, how was she not mad at the end? She had minimal reaction to the fact he has been lying the whole time. Honestly it was SO weird that he was pretending to be her dog. How did she not notice her dog had such human characteristics? The whole book was chaotic from scene to scene. It felt like a bunch of ideas thrown into a book. The ending? How’d we go from “I’m going to kill you” to “okay let’s be besties, come have dinner”. I was honestly worried they’d say she wasn’t even blind at the end. I think the book had potential… I truly can’t decide if I didn’t like it because it needs editing or if the concept was just bizarre.

— now questioning if this book was AI????

Ummmm I should have just stopped it was so wordy and I felt like the same things were said over and over again. Also how did she not clue in that Jason the dog and Jason the man were not the same was she not concerned where her dog was all that time?.. and the ending it was Kind of a hokey ending.
