About the author

J.A. Williams

2 books50 followers
J.A. Williams grew up in a family of female rebels, learning early what happens when women enter arenas where they are not welcome. That knowledge carried her through decades of work in law in the top levels of finance in The City of London, alongside life as a military spouse during times of war and global upheaval.

Then came the moment.

The one where she stopped asking for permission.

The one where she said F*** it.

She pivoted, walking away from a career that no longer served her to become an author, where genre conventions told her to pick a lane.

She flat out refused.

She couldn’t find the book she wanted on any shelf. So she wrote it.

Fantasy that isn’t decorative. Politics which are intimate yet costly. Romance that’s sensual. And stories that refuse to flinch.
Threads of Fate is the result.

Five books.
The first of many.

A dark fantasy universe where romance drives stories that stay with you long after the last page…

Written for readers who are tired of choosing between depth and desire – who have been waiting for someone else to refuse to compromise.

She lives in England with her husband, their four boys, along with one extremely opinionated French Bulldog named Coco. Her spare time is spent plotting the next uprising between school runs, over strongly brewed tea.

I finished this in a night. A really great novela that's set up perfectly for the main book. The auther has packed this book with getting to know each character, the magic and world building.

I loved that it was duel POV so it give a good insight in to both their backgrounds before they come together in the next book.

It actually really drew on my heart strings from each pov. The fmc and her mam and the MMCs search of approval from his dad.

The tattoo/ink/ magic was such a good concept as well. Very unique.

So happy to find a new author and fantasy world that u know im going to love

Can't wait to start spark of the rebellion.

This was perfection. 105 pages and I could not eat it up fast enough. The characters are relatable and not overdone, the world building is intricate without being overwhelming, and I absolutely have to know what happens next.

4.5⭐️

Obsessed.
For a novella it sure delivers….all the things…emotion. tension. backstory. world intro. love. heartbreak. bravery. forbidden magic. All from 2 perspectives - MMC Evander & FMC Arianwen.

“It was not a vow. Nothing so dramatic as that. It was bread. On a rock. Under a willow tree. And it was the most fearless thing I’d ever seen.”

This novella is a must read. It contains so much in just 100ish pages. It quickly and fully immerses you into the world, feels like a whole story, yet leaves you wanting to immediately dive into The Spark of Rebellion for more. I’m LOVING this series already and having so much fun reading!

This prequel novella has me yearning for The Spark of Rebellion!! I loved everything about this prequel.

The introduction to the world and the magic system has massively piped my interest and I’m so intrigue to discover more! The differences in the treatment of males who possess magic and females who possess magic is a really unique concept and I’m desperate to find out why this is the case!

In only 105 pages, I have become completely invested in these characters, to the point where I’m already begging the author to not harm them 🤭 I feel so connected to these characters already and I’m so excited to learn more about them!

I also loved this authors writing style. The story flowed really well and the emotive language invoked so many feelings in such a short story!

This was such a great introduction to this world and these characters and it has left me begging to read The Spark of Rebellion ASAP!! It did exactly what it was set out to do 😍 I’m very excited for what’s to come!!

5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I just finished this novella, and already I feel like this series is going to be up there with my favourites 😍

This novella is part of the " Threads Of Fate " series. It is a free novella that you can get in a link on Jessica's page. I highly recommend you get this novella if you want to see what the series will be about.

Book One " The Spark Of Rebellion " will be out October of this year and I am dying to read it. If this is just the novella, I can't imagine what book one will be like!!

The writing was amazing, I loved the dual POV, We get to understand the story of our 2 MC's before we start book one. I love this as I feel we get more understanding of them and their back story.

The cover reveal for book one, " The Spark Of Rebellion," will be out this Wednesday, the 3rd of June, and I'm excited to be part of it 😍

This is a prequel novella to The Spark of Rebellion which releases in October!
Bound by Smoke & Ink is available now. It’s the backstories of Aria and Evander. They don’t know each other yet.
Aria experiences trauma and ends up with a deadly secret. She goes through loss, a developing young love, and sacrifice.
Evander also experiences changes that force him to grow up. He goes through painful transformation and we see the desire for his father’s approval. Sacrifices are also made here.
Both lives are forever changed by things beyond their control. Both of them are forced to grow up. Both are forced to become people they didn’t choose to be.
Both of their stories made me sad but I thoroughly enjoyed this and can’t wait to see what happens!

To find out what happens when their paths cross, preorder The Spark of Rebellion!

This was a fantastic introduction to the Threads of Fate series and I can't wait to read the rest!

The novella introduces us to key characters, establishes the magic system and the world in which the larger story will take place. I loved J.A. Williams' writing style, which was gorgeously descriptive and used figurative language, liberally, to bring the world an characters to light. The moments where we got really into the characters' minds felt almost like poetry, thanks to the formatting and succinct expression.

A really excellent introduction to this upcoming series and the author's style - I'm really looking forward to more.

This book is available to read FREE if you subscribe to J.A. Williams' newsletter. (Highly worth it!)

This novella had absolutely no business getting me this invested this quickly!

Wow, what an addictive introduction to the world of The Empire of Eternal Dawn, it has left me desperate to continue the story.

From the very first page, J.A. Williams' writing style completely hooked me. There's something about the way she writes that just scratched a particular part of my brain. The descriptions are rich and immersive, the story wrote beautifully. This is incredibly important to me! For me to feel connected or to be able to visualise a story I need writing exactly like this! I can tell the rest of the series is going to consume me and I am HERE FOR IT!

I loved the dual POV, following the MCs as young teenagers and witnessing the challenges, expectations, and heartaches that are already shaping them into who they'll become. I connected with both of them honestly immediately and became invested in their journeys surprisingly quickly for such a short read! I can't wait to see how their stories develop.

The magic system intrigued me! I loved the hints we were given about how magic manifests differently in men and women, and the novella does a fantastic job of introducing just enough to leave you wanting more.

I also have to mention Asher. His gentle, patient, quietly devoted nature! I'm already eager to see more of him in the series, although I have a feeling his role will be different as Aria's character develops.

I read the entire novella in a single sitting and was gutted it was over... If this is only a glimpse of what's to come in Threads of Fate, then I am very excited for this series!!!

Bound by Smoke and Ink

This Novella is a prequel to The Spark of Rebellion, book one in the Threads of Fate series.

We are introduced to 2 main characters of the series, Evander and Arianwen. Evander is the eldest of three siblings and whose dad is the general commander and King. He is desperate to do anything to please his father and during training is forced to show the strength of his magic.

Arianwen is one of four and the eldest daughter. Her parents have created a safe environment in their farmhouse but as more soldiers begin to sweep the village she knows the comfort will not last. After a family tragedy, Arianwen discovers not all as it appears.

I loved this short but detailed introduction into our key characters lives and their families. It's helped start shaping my thoughts and feelings of them and established the characters in my mind. I'm ready and excited for what comes next.

A hauntingly beautiful beginning to an unforgettable fantasy journey ✨🖤

Bound By Smoke & Ink is a powerful and emotional introduction to the Threads of Fate series. Even as a short prequel novella, it carries so much weight, atmosphere, and depth. It doesn’t just set up a story — it lays the foundation for the heartbreak, choices, and conflicts that are yet to come.

The world of the Empire of Eternal Dawn immediately captured my attention. The idea of magic being controlled, claimed, and treated as something to be feared rather than cherished creates such a dark and compelling backdrop. The themes of power, control, sacrifice, and destiny are woven beautifully throughout the story.

Aria Fenwyck’s journey was heartbreaking. Her connection to smoke and the way grief shapes her understanding of power made her story feel deeply emotional and human. Evander Valcour’s side of the story was equally fascinating, showing how someone can be shaped by a world built on cruelty, expectations, and impossible choices.

What stood out most was the writing. The prose is lyrical, atmospheric, and filled with emotion. Every page feels like it carries the weight of something bigger — a storm approaching, a fate already set in motion, and lives that are about to collide.

Although this is a prequel, it doesn’t feel like “just an introduction.” It feels like the first thread being pulled before everything unravels. It left me invested in the characters, curious about the world, and eager to see how these choices will shape the story ahead.

A beautifully written, haunting, and unforgettable beginning. If you love fantasy filled with magic, emotional depth, destiny, and characters carrying impossible burdens, this is a must-read. 🖤🔥

“Power lived in my hands. Power, the Empire deemed a sin.”

Some books ask for your attention.

Bound in Smoke and Ink quietly steals it.

J.A. Williams didn’t simply arrive, she kicked the doors off their hinges.

I was completely consumed by this novella. In so few pages, Williams accomplishes what many full length novels struggle to do. She made me care deeply about Aria and Evander almost instantly, weaving two lives destined to collide in a world where magic isn’t a gift it’s a sentence.

Her writing is immersive and utterly addictive. Every page carries the quiet weight of sacrifice, grief, and impossible choices. I loved the way she explored the cost of power, showing how the Empire’s cruelty shapes each character differently. Every quiet moment feels like the calm before a storm you know is coming, and that sense of inevitability is impossible to look away from.

I found myself slowing down just to savor a sentence, only to race through the next because I needed to know what happened.

Then I reached the end and immediately started reading it again.

Because once simply wasn’t enough.

J.A. Williams has officially become an auto buy author for me, and if this novella is only the first fracture in the Threads of Fate series, then The Spark of Rebellion has become one of my most anticipated fantasy releases.

Some stories stay on your bookshelf.

This one leaves smoke on your fingertips, ink beneath your skin, and a rebellion already burning in your heart.

Wow. I will say, I went into this not quite knowing what to expect, as this is my first read by J.A. Williams. May I just say, an automatic one of my favorite authors!

The writing, the formatting, the prose, the characters, the PLOT!! The prose is lyrical, cinematic, and absolutely beautiful. Every ounce of emotion, every action, every scent...I could feel it, see it, and almost taste it. The way grief and emotion are portrayed throughout this book is gut wrenchingly perfect. These characters are navigating unimaginable changes, and you can truly feel the weight and impact of every situation through J.A. Williams' writing.

The history and introduction to this unique magic system are just enough to leave you eager and yearning for *The Spark of Rebellion* (Book One). We get a meaningful look at our main characters and the events leading up to the first book. You begin to know and understand them as they each reach pivotal, life defining moments that will undoubtedly shape the journey ahead.

If this novella proved anything, it's that J.A. Williams knows exactly how to leave readers needing for more. Consider me fully invested and counting down the days until *The Spark of Rebellion*. ✨📚🔥

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ | 🌶️

Consider this prequel novella the author’s application to be your next favorite epic fantasy with romance author! This prequel novella is available to download for FREE which I truly couldn’t believe after just finishing.

It is NOT one of those novellas written as filler for a broader story. THIS is truly one worth reading. You could truly read this in one sitting if you wanted and walk away feeling like you’ve been with these characters for much longer, the writing is so good. It’s descriptive without being overtly so.

It’s written like an origin story where we meet the FMC and MMC when they are young just as their power is manifesting. We not only get to know these characters but also their relationships with their family and siblings. All set in a world with what I expect will be brutal military training for an empire that takes the sons if they exhibit magic while equally condemning the daughters who do.

It’s minimal to no spice but boy does she build longing, yearning and tension quite well in a few scenes.

Be warned that if you read this novella, you WILL want to pick up Book 1 - The Spark of Rebellion. Which, I imagine was the entire point!

"Some would call it a curse. Though I've always thought of it as a gift we've simply lost the instructions to over the years". Is it good? Or is it evil. Perspective is everything.

Two lives. Two childhoods stolen by power. Two entirely different perspectives- one surrounded by love that has been lost, the other surrounded by love that was never there to begin with.

What a world Jessica has created. The writing is beautiful, immersive and vividly descriptive. This is an author who sees a world clearly in her mind and describes it so eloquently that her reader is pulled right in there with her and is able to see what she sees and feel what she feels. It's real and it's compelling.

This Novella is a dual POV origin story which is the perfect way to introduce us to Aria and Evander and the different pressures they face- one must make herself smaller, almost invisible whilst the other must grow in strength to satisfy the crippling need to gain his father's approval.

I managed to make it to a solid 96% of the way through this Novella before I cried. I felt her loss. I felt her fear. I felt her rage. I cannot wait to read the next instalment - I hope she burns it all down.

Bound by Smoke & Ink was an incredible read. It’s a prequel novella, but there is so much packed into this novella, it blew me away. Masterfully done, Williams introduces us to our FMC Aria Fenwyck, our MMC Evander Valcour, as well as influential side characters. Each character is complex, hinting at depths that I’m sure will be revealed as the series progresses.

Bound by Smoke & Ink sets the foundation of the series and Williams starts worldbuilding but it’s so interwoven into the transpiring events that you don’t even realize it. It was magical to read.

In the Empire of Eternal Dawn, magic is not a gift. It is leashed. Controlled. Claimed from the very first moment it appears. The Empire rules with a brutality that is heartbreaking. It was built on lies and, for centuries, every woman who could expose them was silenced. Burned. Until one refused to burn.

He was forged to obey.
She was born to break the world that made him.
Step into this universe before it ignites.

The prequel, Bound by Smoke & Ink, is available now. Book 1 The Spark of Rebellion Releases October 6, 2026. This series deserves to be on your TBR. It is going to be amazing. I can feel it.

This was phenomenal. I’m not usually much of a novella person - I like my books think, heavy, and with enough heft to basically be a weighted blanket 😉 That being said… read this. Read this right now, or at the very least, before you read Spark of Rebellion (book 1).
This novella (just a quick 100ish pages) is one of the best things I’ve read in months. Two chapters in and I was already messaging friends about how hooked I was. It sets the stage for the events of book 1 and introduces some main characters- think one of the “books” within Assassin’s Blade and how it gave some background on Celaena pre-Throne of Glass.
The skill level of this author? Chef’s kiss. I easily rank her up there with SJM and Penn Cole (Spark of the Everflame). I cannot tell you how happy I was to read such good writing! The characters, the world building, all of it - JA Williams just does a phenomenal job “showing” you as opposed to telling you outright. It’s excellent.
I am so excited for what’s to come!

I Just finished Bound by Smoke and Ink—a short 104-page prequel and introduction to the Threads of Fate series ahead of The Spark of Rebellion, which releases 6th October 2026.

It gives a really useful bit of background into Aria and Evander, especially the grief, loss, and pressure they're both carrying before the main story begins.
It took me a chapter or so to fully settle into the writing style, but once I did I really started to enjoy it and got more invested in both characters.

Aria's anger at the injustice of the empire really comes through in the final moments of the story-especially the way women are treated for having magic while others are controlled and shaped by the system in different ways.
There were even a few moments that genuinely made me a bit emotional, which I wasn't expecting from a novella this short.

As a prequel, it works well as an introduction into the world and sets things up nicely for what's to come. I'm looking forward to diving into Spark of Rebellion next and seeing where Aria, Evander and the rest of the series goes.

Romantic prose, layered characters and mystery.

Bound By Smoke And Ink is a great novella that only leaves you wanting more. We get dual POV between who I think will be our two main characters, Aria and Evander, as they come into their magic and discover what it means for both of them. In just 100 or so pages we get grief, pain and desperation that leaves you desperate for the next instalment.

I can already tell that The Spark Of The Rebellion (Book 1) will build on this novella in terms of rich world building, especially in understanding the political and monarchal system behind the ‘Elite’ force and all it entails. And the little cliffhanger at the end? Perfect for keeping you intrigued.

There is a small, sweet romance here, but as the characters are young it makes sense that it’s not overly developed. I get the sense this series will be emotional fantasy forward with just the right amount of romance. From a debut author, this was excellent. A must read!

It is rare for me to be able to tell so quickly that I absolutely love an author’s writing style. I was immersed into the emotions of these characters immediately. The writing has a beautiful cadence. It’s poetic without being long-winded. This novella packed quite a lot of emotions into a small package.

I have never read a novella specifically described as a prequel, so perhaps this is common, but I found this read more like an extensive prologue than a full story. It looks like these characters are the main characters for The Spark of Rebellion but when they were teenagers. I look forward to seeing the characters they grow into!

This novella is available for ✨free✨ on the author’s website when you sign up for the newsletter.

Bound by Smoke and Ink by J.A. Williams is such a fantastic start to a new series! Even though it's a novella, it packs so much into its pages and immediately pulled me into the world. It surprised me in such a great way!

Aria and Evander grabbed my attention from the moment their story started! I am excited to see where their story takes them and how they will grow as characters. J.A. Williams did an incredible job introducing the world and setting up what's to come without making it feel rushed. I can't wait to jump right into their world in the 1st book of the series!

If you're looking for a quick, captivating read that leaves you excited for the rest of the series, this is definitely one to pick up. I can't wait to see where this story goes next!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read your story. This is my honest opinion.

Bound by Smoke and Ink is the prequel novella to the Thread of Fate series.
🖤💛🖤
As a member of The Elites - street team for Williams and the series, I was chosen to ARC read The Spark of Rebellion (book 1) which is due out on KU on 6th October.
🖤💛🖤
The novella introduces us to 15 year old Arianwen aka Aria, and Heir to the Throne Evander, and their origin stories.
🖤💛🖤
The dedication on this hooked me immediately: ‘For all those girls who learned, too young, what it costs to truly be seen. And survived it anyway.’

This feels like it will be the next #bigthing and I’m so excited to be a part of it in its infancy. The novella is out on KU right now, and I’m off to dive straight into The Spark of Rebellion!

Bound By Smoke & Ink is the origin story of Evander and Arianwen's powers. While there wasn't much detail in where the powers came from, the fact these two were only teenagers makes their story compelling...especially with what Arianwen's brother, Riven, did for her. One's power is welcomed, the other is hidden. Due to this, I am very curious to where Evander and Arianwen's story goes in the Spark of Rebellion as I have a feeling that these two will clash greatly when it comes to their powers.

Even though this is a power origin story, it is also, in a way a coming of age story. Highly recommend to readers who enjoy fantasy books where the extent of powers is uncertain and where power is obtained unwillingly.

This was a great short read and a really good introduction into what is to come in The Spark Of Rebellion. We get a lot of insight into the characters, world building and the magic system which i found quite unique. It also showed us how the system works with the difference between how the woman's power and the men's power is viewed.

I loved that this was dual pov so that we could experience the events from both of the main characters perspectives, and feel the emotions that they went through. For such a short introduction it really makes you emotionally invested in the characters and the events that are unfolding.

The writing style is just addictive and compelling making me that much more eager for the The Spark Of Rebellion!

Part of the Threads of Fate books, this was free after signing up for Ms William's newsletter.
At only 105 pages, I was expecting something not very detailed or not very character driven. However, this is so detailed, the characters are so well fleshed out, I can't wait to read more about the world they inhabit.
I felt the pain of loss, the pain of grief and the joy of love; and having been a reader all my life, to find an author that can do that is a rarety.
Ms William's writing flows so effortlessly it flies. God, I'm being so glowing, but I think it is one of my favourite reads thus year so far.
Can't wait for October, and have already preordered the first Threads of Fates book.

You just know that the spark of rebellion is going to be so good when the prequel gripped you so well.

You get a real feel for everything that is being taken from their souls. The context in this book for the backstory builds the groundwork for the spark beautifully. You feel for both characters and their families. You gather questions that make you want to know more. And it begins to build a world and structure in which you want to explore.

It captured so many important moments that explore each characters personality and what drives them. I love how it was split into a duel pov so you could get to know both sides of the people who will be important.

A family tearing apart:
A beloved mother’s unexpected death.
Riven; a brother coming into his magic/power who turns himself in to try and protect his sister.
Arianwen; the sister with her own magic/power beginning to emerge that the Empire will see as her death sentence.
Evander; struggling to prove himself, an Elite soldier sent to bring Riven in for training.
This leads to a perilous crossing of paths which will leave the fate of all three hanging in the balance.
This Prequel sets the origin/history for the upcoming Thread of Fates story The Spark of Rebellion.
I can’t wait to see where this story is headed, it’s going to be an epic journey!!!!!

A 105-page novella and I’m obsessed!!

Dual POV. We follow our two MCs as their lives begin to change as they uncover their new powers and learn more about who they truly are. For the FMC, however, being found out would mean death.

This just had me gripped. I read it on and off yesterday, only putting it down because I had household bits to do and kids to feed! During those moments, I was thinking about it and desperate to pick it back up.

A 5-star, or dare I even say 6-star, read for me, as it’s all I’ve thought about today and I just cannot wait to dive deeper into this world and see where it takes me when Book 1 officially publishes in October!!

Although it could use a run through editing I enjoyed the writing style of the author. A storyline that held my interest enough that I will pre order the next in the series. Random people that manifest magic in a Kingdom where there are two results depending on the sex of the person that manifests. One leads to induction, the other leads to death. A Prince seeking his father's approval. A secret kept by a brother at the cost of revealing his own to protect his sister. Three lives in the beginnings of great change. Thanks for the free novella. Look forward to seeing where the story leads to.
