I find myself reaching for this one quite often; its entries hit that sweet spot between being too brief to be informative and too lengthy to be able to read while under pressure (which, in academia, is a given).

Learning the history of philosophy takes a long time and is a lot like learning a foreign language. It is a long term task to try to learn the who? what? and when? of philosophy. I didn't read this book from front to back, but in a somewhat random order while always trying to comprehend the whole book at once."

It's a good resource for reminding yourself the general thoughts of different philosophers and schools of thought. Great for beginning students of philosophy as it explains terms which are commonly happened upon in texts.

Excellent summaries of philosophers, schools, etc. Non-western philosophical traditions are included, which is nice. Binding isn't the best.

Currently "reading" second edition, would buy latest edition in thick hardback. One of three books you should take with you to a desert isle; an eternal source of ponder.
You bored? Open up a random page and read.

I love this reference book. I like it much more than the Oxford counterpart. Anytime I have a philosophical question or want to understand a certain thinker, I pick it up.

Having perused this for many months, reading parts which lead me to read more, and more - this is the quickest way to learn about the vast range of past philosophers, different types and sub-types of philosophy, and quickly re-read aspects that did not sink in the first few times I read them. On my shelf to read for the rest of my life - will never be finished.

I would call this an encyclopedia not a dictionary. I picked it up at a used book store as a companion to all these Greek philosophies I’ve been reading of late. Especially with Diogenes’ Lives of the Eminent Philosophers, which was full of rumors, I wanted some guide post to understand what really was going on. I found this a very useful tool. There is a lot of biographical information - which was what I really wanted, and medium detailed explanations of various philosophical schools and movements.
I am marking the book as “read’ because I went through quite a bit, and I’m going to put it aside now, and pick up again as my go to resource for philosophy background/context.
