This book might make you angry. I shows how women sexual pleasure is oppressed hysterically and socially to this day. It’s beautifully written with a lot of wit and opens up a lot of important topics. How they shaped society and brought a lot of shame to women that wanted to experience sexual pleasure and not just think of England while having their legs spread for a partner.
Here are my favorite quotes:
🟣 Sex is not just about making babies. It is about con-nection, intimacy and pleasure. The right to experience sexual fulfilment punctures the culture of shame that exists around sex and women. It empowers us to advocate for our own sexual needs rather than allowing our bodies to be used to satisty a partner.
🟣 Women's sexual nature does not exist to serve men. It is not less than a man's or less deserving of fulfilment. You do not need to fake orgasms or sublimate your own desires in the service of anyone else. This is a fight that has been a millennium in the making, and we can win it simply by knowing where we have come from, knowing that sexual scripts can be changed and above all by placing our own sexual pleasure centre-stage.
So, get loud, get angry and, for God's sake, get yours.
🟣 It was believed that the release and ingestion of sexual fluids enabled male practitioners to connect with this power, allowing them to experience a union with Shakti and the Hindu god Shiva. Little wonder, then, that cunnilingus was regarded as a sacred act: it enabled men to commune with the gods.
🟣 Should you ever feel embarrassed about asking a lover to go down on you, take a leaf out of the Tantric teachings and remember that you're actually providing them with the opportunity to commune with the sacred energies. Frankly, they should be thanking you.

This book was such a great read. Really well written and researched, all delivered with Dr Kate’s wit and humour. I was literally reading passages within the book and could hear Kate’s voice. So if you enjoy Kate on Betwix the Sheets podcast you are going to love this book. There is so much information in this book and sometimes non fiction can be a little dry and difficult to follow but this is delivered in a way that’s totally relatable. It certainly opened my eyes even more to how I see the world and its representations of women. I learnt so much from the historical side as well as modern research, not just about the topics but also about myself. Highly recommend.
