This is the first book I have read by Susie Heart, but it will not be my last. I love it when authors lure me into their world with words that just keep me reading until the wee hours of the morning. (You do know that sleep can be so overrated.)
Our story starts with Laurie and her daughter, Bethany, meeting her best friend, Marianne at the local coffee shop. Marianne can sense that something is not right, so she asks how the move is going. Laurie tells her that they got all moved out. “The new apartment is going to be great.” Marianne can see that something is not right and asks for “the real version.” It seems there has been an “unexpected issue that” will have them in limbo for thirty days. Marianne listens to Laurie’s explanation and may have a solution for her. Marianne’s brother has a problem. Now, Laurie knows about Grant. He is “the kind of person who gets described as ‘formidable’ in business profiles because calling someone terrifying is frowned upon.” Laurie refuses any help from Grant. Marianne counterpoints with an explanation. It seems that the hockey team that Grant owns has a ski lodge that has been neglected for a long time. It’s way past due for a good cleaning and sprucing up. Grant can more than afford to pay Laurie and her daughter a nice paycheck. Now, Laurie doesn’t have any time to try to figure out any other option. She and Bethany will have a place to stay until their new apartment is ready and she will receive a salary. Will that be enough to put up with Grant?
Marianne has a slight problem getting Grant to agree to her sales pitch. She knows that Laurie and Bethany are industrious workers and Laurie is skilled at cataloging assets and takes pride in her work. After informing Grant that they need a place to stay until their new apartment is ready, he agrees to her solution.
The lodge is in dire need of deep, deep cleaning. There are belongings left by the last hockey players who stayed there, dust, broken items, and more. The grounds need work as well. They will have their work cut out for them. Laurie is used to challenging work and knows somehow, she will get through it.
There is also some drama going on. It seems that a member of the last family who owned the lodge believes that the lodge should be hers. Now, the lodge was left to the team in a will. Grant just has not used the lodge to his or the team’s advantage.
I do not want to reveal too much about this story. Will Laurie and Bethany be able to get the lodge fixed up and ready for inspection? What lengths will the family member go to in order to get the lodge? What lengths will Grant go for to keep the lodge? Grant has some ideas and he’s not so sure Laurie will agree with them. This story has main characters with unresolved issues making it intriguing but needing to be sampled in small reading bites to allow it to contemplated. Laurie and Grant each have ways of managing life after surviving life experiences and use it to keep from getting close to future love relationships outside of their core group. The light hearted characters are Marianne and Bethany, Laurie's daughter and Major, Grant's dog keep characters accountable and stop book from being too dramatic.
I got back into this book after reading book 1 that I loved reading. The story became easier to read after Chapter 11 after pausing and reading Book 1 Second Shot with my ex by this author.

I received a ARC copy of this book from the author and though a review wasn’t required, I wanted to offer my honest, voluntary impression upon finishing it.
I have enjoyed reading a lot of Susie’s books and this one is no exception. It’s about a widow with an adult child who finds the place they were going to move into won’t be ready. Her best friend makes a suggestion that could give them temporary lodging and an income as well but she has her pride and is reluctant to accept the offer. Still when she’s told it’s not charity because they will need to work to get the lodge ready she accepts the deal. Things start out strictly business wise but soon it feels like something is changing. Then a misunderstanding that isn’t corrected leaves them engaged suddenly. Through it all another party wants the lodge and they have to show the initial intention was sound before feelings became involved because the fake part isn’t fake anymore. However, as in all relationships, storm clouds arise and they need to really evaluate if what they feel is real and if it can handle the pressures on this fragile relationship.
Love rarely runs smooth as most everyone will attest from their own experiences but the crucial factor remains- is the feeling you have for each other enough to forgive actions by the other person even if they were done without your knowledge for your benefit?
I love these stories because of the humanness contained within them. I and most readers have the advantage of seeing things from both perspectives but it causes one to reflect how you would feel if you were the one who it happened to instead of just reading about it.
I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend you get and read this book and if you haven’t read any of Susie’s other books you have the first chapter of a book I read and loved at the end of this book to give you another book to enjoy.

Enjoyable story where the h finds herself and her daughter with out a place to stay after the apartment they were going to rent will not be available for a month. Her best friend talks her brother, who in upper management of a professional hockey team, to hire the h and her daughter to clean, repair and upgrade a lodge that is owned by the team but has been allowed to slip into disrepair. There is a court case that involves this property and they could loose it. The H has the h sign a contract that has her and her daughter do the necessary cleaning, repairs and upgrades needed for a salary and housing. The h and daughter have the unique skills to do this. In the process the H and h find themselves suddenly needing to act as a couple due to a misunderstanding by a donator at a fund raiser. The h agrees and so they become a fake couple. In the end the H goes to court and tells the truth about the property and how the team plans to use the property and as a result the decision regarding the property is put off. The first team member who needs a decent place to live becomes the first occupant and the daughter becomes the manager for the property. The H and h during all the events surrounding the refurbishment of the property and their fake dating fall in love and get their HEA. You can’t help but love the characters and their interactions with each other, especially the H who really shows his true character. Also you will want to route for the relationship of the H and h to come to a happy ending. Also the final use of the property showed that the H was more interested in the players and their well being than any one else, he really sees them and their needs. This story may not be long but it sure does touch your heart, especially the H. Hope you enjoy this story as much as I did. Recommend it to anyone who loves a Hallmark story. Enjoy!

Laurie is a widow, and she and her 23-year-old daughter are currently without housing. Their new apartment wasn’t going to be ready for a month, and they couldn’t afford to stay in a hotel for that length of time. Laurie’s best friend Marianne has a solution. Accept a job from her brother to get a disused lodge into shape for inspection, and on top of the salary he’s paying, they can stay in the lodge for free while they’re working there. Easy, right?
Well, the lodge itself was gifted to the Outlaws hockey organization by the Lestor family many years ago, and since the lodge hadn’t been occupied in some time, a family member is contesting the agreement, and trying to get the property back.
Grant has some ghosts in his head, and has a service dog named Major, who is very well trained. Well…except when he’s around Laurie. It’s clear that the dog loves her at first sight. Laurie likewise has her good days and her bad days, as the reason she’s in this situation is because her husband passed away a while back. Being a married woman myself, sometimes I worry what might happen if I lost my husband. Sure, there are things one can plan for, but no one can plan for everything.
It doesn’t take long for Grant and Laurie to fall for each other, even though neither of them had been looking for love. But that’s usually the time when you find it, and you can either recognize it as a gift, or run the other way. These two kind of do both, finally landing at a happy ending. You even get a little hockey action! So, come for the scene-stealing Major, stay for the later-in-life romance, and enjoy.

This book was such a good read. It had me so invested in such a short amount of time. I was locked in from the first line. This story is so very sweet and endearing. Laurie is an absolute force. She is strong and determined and knows her worth. She’s been through a lot and is still standing tall. Grant is a focused and driven. And does what he feels is best and right. I didn’t dislike or have an issue with the MCs as a whole. Although Grant did make some questionable decisions, but for good reasons. It was so refreshing how genuine and natural the connection between Grant and Laurie developed. The way these two navigate blossoming feelings and past issues was heartwarming and felt so real. You couldn’t help but want the absolute best for both of these characters no matter what that looked like. And the ending we got for these two was everything I could have imagined or wanted. And I just need it know that Major is the absolute best character in this whole book. I love him. He needs no corrections but does need all the treats ever.

This fast-paced, highly enjoyable quick read sets a fantastic foundation for the series by throwing together two hesitant acquaintances: Grant, a hockey team owner scrambling to get a team-owned lodge ready for a looming inspection, and Laurie, who is in desperate need of a place to live. When Laurie’s best friend suggests she solve both their problems by working for her brother Grant, their initial reluctance quickly gives way to a dynamic that turns out to be exactly what they both needed. Despite the short length, the author does an excellent job of highlighting the characters' flaws, showing how their complicated pasts directly impact the messy, authentic way they communicate with each other. It serves as the perfect, engaging appetizer for the larger story yet to come, and I absolutely cannot wait to see how their relationship and the rest of the series unfold!

Temporary Lodging by Susie Heart is a heartwarming later-in-life romance delivered a sweet, emotionally satisfying story filled with hope, second chances, and characters who are easy to root for. In this novel, we are introduced to the FMC Laurie, a down on her luck mother that is hired by the MMC Grant to fix his hockey teams neglected mountain lodge. One of the book's greatest strengths to me was how the romance between the main characters unfolded at a gentle pace, allowing the relationship to develop naturally as the characters navigate past disappointments and unexpected new feelings. Overall, Temporary Lodging was a delightful read that had a feel-good charm and a happily-ever-after that left me smiling even after the book ended.

I enjoyed this story. Problem-solving goes awry. How things go with the lawsuit, the emotional part proved me right about the needless nature of faking any kind of relationship.
People quite often misinterpret others in this story too, but it's good when the protagonists, being in each other's orbit, can see from different perspectives, make their own opinions, get to know each other eventually, and even like each other as they are; sparks help too. But unfortunately, some mistakes are unavoidable because of misguided emotions, specific characteristics, and conclusions drawn from painful experiences.
Nice to meet another dog with fast-developed traitorous attachment; only special circumstances prevent it from being expressed. Hoping it will change for him when the protagonists get closer.

Second chances for many in this sweet hockey related book. This time it isn't the player's story. It is a property that has not been used or fully maintained by the hockey team. The original owner of the property is trying to get the court to revert the property back to her. The team owner is trying to keep it for team needs. Enter that owner's sister and a best friend (with adult daughter) who is capable and in need of some support. He hires them to revamp and clean the property. She says yes, needing the job as well as a place to live in the month before her apartment is available. Win-win! Or is it?
Strong willed characters who don't know how to accept support. A legal battle, bad decisions, and winning seems unlikely. Very enjoyable story!

I loved Laurie and Grant's story and I'm sure you will too. I've loved everyone of her books that I've read and I can't wait to read her next book.

Temporary housing by Susie heart is EXACTLY what I needed to refresh my mental pallet. This rom-com, forced proximity, billionaire and widow romance was such a fun read! It’s a fun, short book that has it all— except spice (which I needed a break from!). Laurie and Grant are great together… once they realize that feelings aren’t failure and fear isn’t worth protecting. Laurie and her adult daughter repair and clean up an old lodge while Grant and his hockey team go through a legal battle to keep the property. Read this book to follow the antics of fake dating and real time falling for each other!

Temporary Lodging by Susie Heart is a short later in life romance story. When Laurie accepts a job to make a disused cabin whole again, she meets owner Grant. They get off on a rocky start and when someone claims the cabin belongs to her family, Grant offers Laurie a deal: a fake relationship in order to protect Laurie from all kinds of gossip.
This was such a sweet story to read. Both Laurie and Grant are great characters. I loved how Laurie put Grant in his place sometimes, but he only had her best interests in mind. Both come across really well. The writing style is flowing. It is a lovely novella with some depth. I enjoyed reading it.

Laurie is great friends with Marianne, Grant's sister, Laurie and her daughter, Bethany, are unable to move into their new flat as it isn't ready. Marianne has a great idea, Grant has a lodge that needs renovating and repairing, Laura and Bethany can stay there as part of the payment, seems a great idea until the previous owner starts interfering and causing problems. Can Grant try to be less controlling and allow Laurie to make decisions for herself? Even if the reason he's doing it is because he cares?

This was a cute prequel to a series I’m looking forward to! I usually don’t enjoy later in life romances or widowed romances or ex wounded military romances but I like Susie Heart so I figured I’d give it a go! I’m glad I did!
It was nice and short. Enough so you get a good idea of how the lodge came to be, but not unnecessary fluff or details that didn’t need to be there. And left an open plot line for the series
I’m hoping we get to see Bethany have her happily ever after in this series! A great clean romance - kisses only- with a happily ever after.

Thanks to one sister, Grant and Laurie’s lives intersect. It starts out with clear directions until a property dispute. Is Laura capable of “making me believe that disaster can be redeemed”? Grant: “built my life on control because controls prevents disasters”. So many assumptions are made but are they true? Will he “choose someone over winning”? What “makes the fight worthwhile”? Enjoy discovering the answers.

This is a great, quick read! I received it as an ARC. Laurie is talked into helping her friend Marianne's brother with a lodge that is in need of some care. Grant is facing some legal challenges with the property and needs it to be worked on. It is interesting to see Laurie and Grant face the situation from their own way of doing things. I enjoyed getting to know them and some of the other characters as well.

This was a very sweet and intriguing read! I always enjoy books about faux engagements, and this one was no exception. The characters were very entertaining. I especially loved Laurie’s daughter Bethany. I really hope she gets a story of her own. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is searching for a clean romance!

This is one of the best character developed novellas I have read. Susie Heart, wrote a delightful story, that although short, really delivered. We got to know both the MMC and FMC and what made them feel and act the way they did. That is often not the case in short reads. Well done, Susie Heart! What a great intro to the Outlaws Hockey team, and to what I hope are going to be several books about the characters introduced, not to mention a great romance!

A completely lovely read with good worldbuilding and wonderful characters. In spite of “the least romantic proposal ever” and the Outlaws engagement ring Grant says the nicest things: “You taught me the difference between protecting someone and standing beside her, and I want to spend the rest of my life getting that right”.

talk about basic…
This had a good start but no development. All of a sudden there was a kiss and I looked down to see it was 60%. A lot of repeated feelings and internal dialogue. I didn’t bother to read the epilogues despite wanting to know the purpose of the service dog and how the husband died—or even WHEN he died (there were a few mixed timelines for that) or watch the mother/daughter relationship develop.

It seemed to flow nicely into an established partnership, and the tension remained high.
I didn’t quite connect with the characters, but I still enjoyed it.

Fun, Thoughtful, Quick Read
This is a sweet book that deals with business and emotions and life graciously. Laurie and Grant are sweet together. The dog, the daughter, the best friend, and the team round out the relationship dynamics. It's a book that ends with putting a smile on your face.

I liked it for the most part. Very Cinderella-like.
I do wonder if it’s more likely, though, that the company’s concern would be hiring someone who’s been through eviction notices rather than the other way around. I can at least concede that Jessie is awful.
