When Detective Richard Giordano walks onto the Broadway stage, he expects to find a young, dead chorus girl. Having the show’s choreographer so intricately tied to the victim, and now his case, is something else altogether. What quickly becomes even more troublesome is balancing his attraction with his gut instincts.
The choreographer, Empathy Delacroix, is no stranger to death. Emotional scenes from the past suck her in and force her to play critical roles in the events. They often culminate in her experiencing the victim’s demise. It’s a secret she can’t confide in the police, even if she knows how the chorus girl’s life really ended.
Time ticks by and New York’s vilest players come out of the shadows, not only threatening to detour the case but also Detective Giordano’s and Empathy’s entire lives. The bonds of death and love push them closer together and into the path of a killer, leaving both unsure of what their future holds.
NYT Best Selling Author for the anthology Wicked After Dark!
I have been a fan of realistic fantasy all my life. The idea of alternate explanations for the mundane, fascinates me. As a woman with deep southern roots, I am not one who is quick to dismiss the otherworldly. However, the idea that our world isn't as big and foreboding as it seems, also plays heavily into my writing.
I am the author of fan favorite cliffhanger series, The Charlotte Grace Series and The Empathy Delacroix Series. I have also written a novel, The Underground.
The opening story in the Empathy Delacroix series (aka: the story of Em and Richard).
Em (Empathy) is a choreographer for Broadway/off-Broadway shows.
Richard (prefers to be called Rich, but annoying people call him versions of Dick) is a detective for the NYPD.
When Rich and his partner, Steve, investigate the (possible) murder of a chorus girl during a practice rehearsal, Rich feels an instant connection and immense attraction to the choreographer - Em.
What if Em is a suspect though? Any relationship attempts have to occur after Em is no longer a suspect.
Oh the tangled webs in this story! There were so many people I wanted to shake, and others I wanted to punch in the face! I always love the way Ms. Briede makes the characters into flesh-and-blood people, with complicated emotions and stubborn pride and mistakes.
This book is told in alternating first-person perspectives from Em and Rich. The great part is that Ms. Briede labels each section/chapter with whose perspective the part is told from, and a small little heading as well. I enjoyed this, as it made it simple for me as the reader to know which person's thoughts and emotions I was reading.
While there is a tiny bit of a paranormal edge, I would dismiss that and place it under a complicated contemporary romance-ish with elements of extreme suspense. Yes, it is hard to place into one category!
Detective Richard Giordano is my new book boyfriend!
I can tell you how much I enjoyed it, and how I can barely stand to wait until book 2 releases (hopefully soon!). Keep in mind that this is a trio of books, and this book 1 does leave you in the middle of the story - so be prepared!
To carry the burden of another's emotions what a huge responsibility! Another huge responsibility is writing about it...and PM Briede does so beautifully! This story is much like Law and Order meets Criminal Minds meets CSI! You get to see the murders, feel their pain, experience their sorrow, enjoy in their triumphs, and feast in their budding romance! I had the distinct honor and privilege of getting to BEAT this story and I must say that I was BLOWN away!! Every thought, feeling, and action is method I ally thought out and organically written! PM tells the stories of those who are murdered in such a beautifully descriptive way that their lives are just as important as the hero and heroine...so much so that you just know that their lives especially were not lived in vain...that they did have a very significant purpose here living with us! Richard is a hot and sexy man, with scars from his past (as do we all), but he works hard, loves hard, and protects even harder! Empathy is a strong, decisive woman, with a gift that she never takes for granted, with a heart that unconditionally lo especially! I have read all of PM's books and do not hesitate to say that her books just keep getting better and better! This story is by far her best story yet, be prepared once you start to read DOACG to not be able to put it down!!! This is THE drop dead, thrilling awesome, MUST READ BOOK of 2015! Love ya PM!!
Wow That's so so not fair at all. You had me gripped to the edge of my seat and you have to leave it like that. Had to keep putting it down just to prolong it that extra bit because I didn't want to end. Empathy Delacroix is choreographer for Broadway stage. She is no stranger to death having visions and horrible side effects of people's death's. Also blaming herself for her parents death. Emotional scenes from her past force her to have a critical role in the events. Richard Giordano walks on to scene, of death of chorus girl. Empathy intricately tied to the women. So can't wait to read the next book to see how the rest of this story plays out.
Wow... I'm normally not speechless but oh my... this book had me at the first line. Pm Briede brings you into a world with Empathy and Richard. Em sees things. And some of the things she sees are not all good things. Rich is a detective investigating a murder. Em is a well known choreographer who was the at the time of the murder. Things start to happen (but I won't give you details) and a relationship forms. There is so much that happens in this book if you blink you'll miss it. It's a definite must read! And I can't wait for more!
I don't normally read romance novels, even if it has a paranormal twist. I really liked this storyline it has some good drama. It is not heavy on the steps in solving a murder, but it has lots of relationship drama. It reminds me of the novels labeled as Beach Books. The cliffhanger ending was also abrupt.
I love the author's vivid descriptions of the people and New York. It helped me see the settings and real landmarks while reading and that helped me connect to the characters. You feel like you are inside the mind's of the characters. They are the narrators of their strange meeting and love story. Love the author’s vivid descriptions of the people and New York.
The story centers around Em and Rich who, at times, act like middle schoolers. At first, they grated on me, but as I read on, I understood they couldn't help their fate to meet. It is interesting how the author allows the reader into the mind of the main characters. It was a great way to not only explain the murder, but also both of their reactions to the events unfolding in their personal lives.
I did like the reference to real place, which made the story so much more real. The author builds a sold background to the players in this cat and mouse game. The author seems to have an understanding of each character's ego. I really felt drawn in to their different worlds.
It did have a bit of sex scenes and lots of kissing and a lot of loss. The loss of loved ones and relationships and trust seem more the theme than a loss of a murdered chorus girl.
The story begins when a very handsome detective is called to the scene of a dead body at a theatre. The detective is captivated by a beautiful choreographer who was the one to find the body. The murder triggers events that threaten the play, the careers and lives of all in this love story. The case is turning cold as the relationships heat up.
The book picks up speed as the many players interact and try to deceive and cover up the lies and the truths. With every page the author lets you see more and more of the internal torment of both the theatre and police worlds and the many roles each character plays to maintain the illusion that the world is a safe and happy place.
Thanks to Electively Paige and P.M. Briede for giving me this book free for review! :)
I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed by this book. It started of really well. A chorus girl was killed (suspected murder) by falling debris on the stage at rehearsal. It's up to Rich, the detective, and Steve, his womaniser partner, to solve the crime. Good, right? Then Rich meets Em. It's love at first sight. Need I say more? I'm very, VERY against love at first sight. It doesn't exist - you see a person, and you think they're good looking. That's all insta-love really is. It's especially bad when Em is the PRIME SUSPECT. He flirted like mad with her, and she flirted like mad back, in the middle of interviews. He was asking her if she KILLED SOMEONE, and got distracted by her flirting. Basically, the book just got worse from there on. Once Em's name was cleared, it was all about the romance. Personally, I still think she did it. Her excuse was a pretty poor one - physic powers. I mean, come on. It was never explored after she told Rich about them. She had a few "episodes" with them, but never explained exactly where it came from. This was not a fantasy book - it was just a convenient excuse. Rich and Em continued to do stupid things in the name of love. Like, you know, say it was in the name of love. They'd be dating for maybe a week when Rich said the l-word. Gutsy, I thought. But I guess it was okay, since they were living with each other by this point. It was just like a normal relationship, but on super fast forward. They only took their time with one thing, which ended with a very detailed almost-sex scene. I was not expecting that... So, I got mad at this book, and sped through it. Then, all of a sudden, in the last chapter they returned to the murder. You know the last episode of season 2 of Broadchurch? Where all of a sudden they remembered they had to wrap up the case? This was just like that. They frantically tied up all the lose ends (no thanks to Rich and Steve). Then BAM, cliffhanger ending. I'll admit, the ending definitely got me. It was definitely the best part (no, not because it meant the book was over, because it was exciting!) I read this book hoping for a murder mystery. That part of it was actually fun to read about! But it wasn't, it was a romance. Not a completely terrible romance, but not exactly a great one either. Trust me, I am incredibly thankful to the author for letting me review this. But that doesn't mean I had to like it...
I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review
Enjoyed this a lot! There are a lot of different elements introduced in this story, whether it is romance, mild mystical themes or of course the suspenseful element, there are definitely intriguing hooks for the readers. And yes, I was hooked from the start.
The premise of a detective feeling an instant attraction to a mysterious woman who may or may not be a suspect in the death of a chorus girl sets up the opportunity for some great angst. Who doesn’t enjoy that?
Empathy (Em) is a choreographer, hardworking and disciplined, and there’s definitely more to her than meets the eye. She’s a very likeable character, diplomatic and controlled yet with a certain level of vulnerability at the same time. Richard is a surprisingly sensitive male lead. As a detective, I think we often have preconceived ideas of what a man in that line with a difficult past to be - somewhat abrasive and broody perhaps, yet it is refreshing for him to be a sensitive support.
I like that through the first person dual POV, we get inside both Em and Richard’s minds which helped to feel emotionally connected as I read.
One of the most enjoyable aspects for me while reading was experiencing the chemistry between Richard and Em. From the start they feel a connection, and seeing the way their relationship began, how their attraction grows, how they are tested over time was my favourite part. Their trust in each other is certainly not instantaneous, but given the manner of their meeting and the circumstances under which their relationship grows, this is hardly a surprise.
I would have liked to experience more of the investigation side of the story. Although all of the elements are seemingly relevant to the story, and I imagine it will become clearer in the next instalment, personally I think experiencing a bit more of that aspect would have enhanced my interest. It was comfortably paced. The ending felt fairly sudden, even if you know there is another instalment on its way. I want to know more! Look forward to reading the continuation. Thank you PM Briede for the opportunity to read and review your book!

This was the first book that I’ve read from P.M. Briede and I was not disappointed in the slightest! Coming from a Law Enforcement background, I always love reading books that have some form of Law Enforcement in them. I was pleased to find out that there was a very sexy, interesting Detective in this book. Det. Richard Giordano is an interesting man. He has worked on the force many years and has never been distracted before by a woman suspect or witness (and this is really something to be proud of, honestly!), until the day that his partner and he get called to a scene...and there stands Empathy (Em) Delacroix. Em is a big time choreographer with some legs that go to her neck, and a body built to love. Talk about some sparks that are starting to fly here!! Whew! I love the fact that in this book, the points of view alternate every chapter but, don’t worry…each chapter is labeled on whose POV you are about to read. In doing this, Ms. Briede shows us the story from both sides without confusing anyone or making them try to figure out who is doing the talking. Alternating POV’s always makes me happy and gives the author brownie points! So, in this book, we have a very interesting murder situation that needs solving; along with a romance that is dying to happen but is put on hold while Em is a suspect, and then all the other characters adding to the twisty situations that are happening. I mean come on: a dead chorus girl, a choreographer who has a “seeing” issue, a police officer who is emotionally torn between situations, and then a murder left to solve….very twisty! While you are getting all wrapped up in the twisty-turny of the book, please remember that this is a series so there will be some unanswered questions screaming at you before you get done. But, just like you, I’m holding strong that the next book is coming very soon!!! Overall, this book is just plain great! I loved every minute of it and definitely plan on putting it in the “re-read pile”! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes police work, a bit of paranormal, romance, mystery, and suspense aspects. I absolutely give this 5 STARS!! Good job P.M., now please release book 2!!
Death of a Chorus Girl: The Delacroix Series, Book 1 is a romantic suspense novel written by P.M. Briede. Detective Richard Giordano and his partner, Steve Beauregard, have been called to investigate the murder of a chorus girl in the theater district. The police had initially considered the collapse of a lighting rig and her resulting death to be a tragic accident; however, the coroner’s examination indicated that Annie was strangled before she was hit by the rig. On his way into the theater, Richard had noticed a woman standing apart from the clusters of theater personnel; she was obviously upset, as were the huddled performers, but he was troubled by the look in her eyes. It almost seemed to the perceptive detective that she had been privy to the tragic demise of her dancer. According to the coroner, she was the choreographer for the production and had called the dancers off the stage just ten minutes before the crash occurred. She was also the one who found Annie’s body. Richard found himself in the very difficult position of being immensely attracted to Empathy Delacroix, the choreographer, who also happened to be very much a person of interest in this investigation.
P.M. Briede’s romantic suspense novel, Death of a Chorus Girl: The Delacroix Series, Book 1. is a masterful blend of the police procedural and paranormal romance genres. The story is told in alternating chapters by Richard Giordano and Empathy Delacroix, and seeing their different perspectives heightens the intensity of the plot. Briede’s treatment of Empathy’s paranormal abilities is sensitive and authentic, and the reader can’t help but feel for the woman whose gift has deeply impacted her life. This is a sweet romance starring two people who are committed to creating an enduring relationship even if it means going very slowly at first. The police procedural angle of this story is first-rate, focusing on ethics and professional responsibility as well as solving the murder at hand. I enjoyed reading Death of a Chorus Girl. The characters are complex and credible, and the underlying mystery is a challenging one for armchair sleuths. Death of a Chorus Girl is highly recommended.
The opening story in the Empathy Delacroix series (aka: the story of Em and Richard).

First off, I am going to try and get through this with as little to no spoilers as I possibly can, that being said....HOLY CHEESE BALLS BATMAN! I absolutely adored this book. When I first read the synopsis I was immediately intrigued, being a huge fan of Broadway I had yet to come across anything using it as a setting for a story. Having read the book I have to say I was not disappointed.
Detective Richard Giordano and his partner arrive at a crime scene in a swank theater where he meets the absolutely stunning choreographer Empathy Delacroix. Insert instant attraction on both sides however all signs point to her being the prime suspect in the poor chorus girls death. Throw in suspicious, sleezball characters, a couple of best friends, family issues, heartbreak, money, sex, a bit of the paranormal, and enough twists to keep you on the edge of your seat and you have the first book of this delectable series. The characters are well thought out and even those that play a minor role seem to have a story to tell and actually aid in the story at hand as apposed to just being there for a word count deadline if that makes any sense.
Plenty of suspense and thrills to keep anyone intrigued with just enough romance to keep us romance junkies happy I highly recommend this book to anyone. Keep in mind though this is book one of a series and isn't meant to be read as a stand alone. It does end in a cliff hanger so if you are looking for a HEA all in one book....you should just keep looking. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go find book two.
Detective Giordano is totally my new book boyfriend, maybe if you're nice I'll let you enjoy him too. ;-)
Richard is a detective trying to solve the murder of a young dancer. What appears to be a freak accident at the beginning turns out to be murder. At the crime scene parted away from the rest of the company is the beautiful choreographer Empathy. There is an immediate connection between Em and Richard, so now he is trying to figure out where she fits into the mystery.
I did enjoy this book, but I found this to be more of a love story with a dash of murder. The characters felt such an instant attraction towards one another that I normally don’t like. I am not a fan of instalove. I think it is so overdone and usually poorly executed. But Briede wrote about their instant infatuation in such a realistic way. Richard knew he was falling fast for Em and it scared him. Both characters realized how complicated their lives could get because of these emotions. I thought it was so well done and very well written. This book is told through both Em’s and Richard’s point of view. They alternate several times throughout a chapter. This did make the chapters feel a lot longer at times, but each point of view progressed the story line. There were rarely his and her point of views on a the same event.
The characters were good. We did see a lot more character development with Richard. There were a good handful of secondary characters, I wish we could have learned more about them. I think Teddy is probably my favorite characters, and I want to know everything about her.
The only issue I had was the ending. I wasn’t expecting the book to wrap everything up in a bow but damn they left me with so many more questions. I cannot to get my hands on the sequel.
i was given an Arc to beta read and read and review by the author
An amazing work by P.M a mystery to be solved and a love story that can last but we are not sure if it can.
The story is about Em a choreographer in Brodway and off Broadway shows and of Richard who is a detective for the NYPD
When a crime happens in the show that emily works Ritchard and his partner are called to investigate. Besides a crime Richard finds also Em and how difficult it is for him to take his eyes off her.
Things get difficult when Em is suspected of the crime.
Can she trust him with her secret? Can a relationship work between them? Can he save her ? A lot of questions come up...but can they all be answered?
Ohhh my what a story this is!!! Soo complex and with so real characters that you can't avoid wanting to hit some and love some and hug some!
The books is told by the point view of each character but thank God PM has made it so that in each section we know who talks!!!!!
Extreme suspense, some paranormal,a love storry, mystery ,hates and passions this book can be said to have a bit of everything so well put that will leave you in the end puuuurrrrring like a cat and wanting more!!!
I really can't wait for the next book to come out and as always i have to warn you that this one leaves you in the middle of things and you wanna scream!!!!!!
Talk about one heck of a murder mystery. Someone is shot and killed within the first two pages of this book. At least that is what it appears to be. So much intrigue, subterfuge and other interesting things going on in this book. I could not put it down. Empathy (Em) is a choreographer on Broadway and Off-Broadway that works for Thomas Worthy. A chorus girl is killed during a rehearsal and everyone comes under suspicion very quickly. However, one person that they should have been looking at is not even on their radar. What happens that sends Detective Richard Giordano into the hospital with a gun shot wound? Why is Em bailed out? What does Richard's partner at the police department do? So many questions. Of course, the cliff hanger that the author leaves you with at the end is spectacular! I cannot wait to pick up Don't Drink the Nine tomorrow when I get home from work.
RECEIVED THIS BOOK AS A GIFT FOR A FAIR/HONEST REVIEW and REVIEWER FOR Bloggin' With M.Brennan.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. The opinions in this review are my own. After reading this book by PM Briede I feel as if I have spent some time in a world mixed of the following old film noir detective stories, modern popular police and crime scene procedural shows and a romantic movie. The characters of Richard Giordano and Empathy Delacroix are easy to get to know and identify with. However that does not stop them from keeping a reader on their toes. This book will hold your attention, draw you in, spin you around and leave you mentally wrung out asking questions about what is next. The ride that this book takes you on is worth it in my opinion and there is much joy while reading. Occasionally I felt the shock and disappointment Richard and Empathy were experiencing right along with them. I recommend this to others that love to read. I will definitely be looking for more of this author's work.
This is a well-written and thought-provoking murder mystery/conspiracy /contemporary romance. Rich and Em, the two main characters, are gritty and realistic. Will they be able to overcome their disparate backgrounds and embrace their mutual attraction? Who killed Annie? ... The secondary characters are also richly portrayed; from the smarmy investor, Fitz, to the equally disgusting Steve and Tom, this author obviously spent some time in all of these characters' heads (a place I don't ever want to be!). The plot wickedly twists and turns through the investigation, potential romance, grievous bodily harm, and even a second death! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for something new to read. It's a multi-genre feast of the senses! Love!
"Empathy" has a gift as unique as her name. Her skills come into play when she meets the attractive Detective Richard Goirdano after the suspicious death of a chorus girl she choreographed for a Broadway play. With every new character PM Briede introduces, the plot thickens and you can't help but enjoy the twists. Each character's persona is written so distinctly, that you have a hard time knowing who to trust.
This book is a series and does have a cliffhanger at the end. I can't wait to see what's in the next "chapter" to solving the mystery. Couldn't put this one down and am certain the next one will be exactly the same!!
This was the first P.M.Briede book I have read and I'm happy to say I'm hooked!! I was not sure what I was getting myself into in reading this one, I most often read crazy romance and YA so a mystery was new for me!!! Loved it!!!
Detective Richard Giordano and Empathy Delacroix are great leads for this one. Both characters are so well rounded you feel like you know them. They become friends and you become so invested in their lives!!! There is so much I want to put but I hate spoilers!!! Once I started I could not put it down!!!
Pick this one up! I will recommend this one to everyone!!! Cannot wait for more!!!!
I really loved this story. The combination of current technology and events with the old 20's detective story feel made me very entranced by the characters, world and everything therein. The plot was good, I was convinced I knew who the killer would be and I am happy to say I was so wrong! Which is honestly not something that happens often, so good show. I've read Briede's entire Grace series and it surprised me in the same awesome way. The only thing I have to say that isn't 100% positive is that I didn't like where it ended. Not that it ended badly, quite the opposite really. I just want more, which is why I didn't dock the story any stars.
Empathy Delacroix is a choreographer of Broadway shows. One of her dancers is killed and we are introduced to Detective Richard Giordano. They sizzle from the first glance.
This book is way to easy to give spoilers on. I'm just going to say that you can't get much more in a book than this one has.....romance, suspense, intrigue, twists....I love it!
This book had me hooked from the first page and I was totally not expecting the book to the end when it did.
A word of warning before starting this book make sure you have some time blocked out because once you start it you won't put it down!
Well done P.M. Briede on an outstanding book! I can't wait to read Book 2!
I have not always been a fan of mysteries, but this may have just changed my mind completely. HOLY COW how could you just leave it hanging right there.....really must have more very soon.
Em and Rich and their friends are in for a heck of a ride. While they have gotten off to a somewhat rocky start I am rooting for Em and Rich all the way. They both have demons they are facing and have yet to see that they will be stronger facing them together than alone, but I think they are getting there.
I have so many questions and I am truly looking forward to the next book and getting to see the answers and how things all play out.
Once again Ms. Briede pulled me in and wouldn't let me go! Empathy (an empath), Richard (a police detective) and murder. How will Em trust someone with her gift/curse? How will Rich clear her? How will they resist the magnetic pull of ....?. You must read it to find out. Get drawn into the twists and turns of Broadway and Murder. I cannot wait for book two and Ms. Briede doesn't disappoint. She will have the next one out soon.
So I had no clue what to expect with reading this novel, thinking it was paranormal, I quickly found that I was wrong. Meeting Rich Giordano and Em Delacroix, who I want to grow up to be :), discovering their connecting and chemistry to one other is what a love story is all about. This being my first PM Briede read I was blown away! PM has a wonderful talent and if she writes anything else that's not paranormal, I will definitely be reading it!! HeHe :)
5Must read warning once you start you won't be able to put it down ByMichelle Martin September 4, 2015
This is a fantastic book I feel in love quickly with the Characters I was intrigued by the mix of mystery and suspense. And is that a hint of romance? Wow this is a must read book....It is a book that left me needing to know what happens next so Empathy Richard I will see u soon in Don't Drink The Nine
Great book but I am not surprised. I previously read the Charlotte Grace Series and fell in love with the authors story telling skills. Death of a Chorus Girl is just as good a ride but in a different way. Fan's of a good ole "who done it" will love this book. Do your self a favor and read this book ...well read all of her books you will never be disappointed!!
This book grabbed from the beginning,I just couldn't put it down. The story of Em and Rich has many hurdles. I love the way the story was written and can't wait to see what comes next for Em and Rich.
I would recommend this book to those who love suspense and romance all in one. Again a great read.
I received a copy in exchange for my honest review. Wow!! What an amazing book!! So many excited twists and turns. Had me on the edge of my seat till the very end. I can tell that this is going to be a great series!!
I was given this book as an ARC for an honest review. P.M. Briede is a new author for me and I will be adding her to my fav authors! Death of a Chorus Girl had a old school vibe to it that I thoroughly enjoyed watching unfold.
I thought this was a great start to the series ! Very engaging storyline, I read it in one day. Em and Richard will pull you into the web of their tangled lives and keep you there. Although this book leaves you hanging at the end, it only makes me anticipate book two that much more!
