As a self‑proclaimed marriage romance girly, I stay begging the genre to give us more stories about couples who are already in it rings on, kids fed, bills paid, love tested. This micro‑trope is so underrepresented, especially in Black romance, so when a book like this drops? I’m front row, popcorn in hand.
Layla and Kylo have been locked in since college. Layla comes from Black prestige judge father, lawyer mother, generational wealth that’s been compounding for decades. Kylo, on the other hand, is that solid middle‑class, grind‑for-everything man who grew up knowing he had to earn every inch of his life. And even though Layla chose him, even though she loves him, her family has never let him forget he’s “not one of us.”
But Kylo? Kylo is obsessed with that woman. Married her. Built a life with her. Had babies with her. And still wakes up every day trying to prove he deserves her even when she’s already chosen him a thousand times.
And that’s where the cracks start.
Because when a Black man feels like the world is on his shoulders his family, his masculinity, his money, his pride he’ll sometimes make choices that come from fear, not wisdom. Kylo’s “provider at all costs” mindset leads him into some questionable territory, and Layla’s silence meets his secrecy. Their communication? In shambles. Their trust? Hanging by a thread.
The only thing still working is the sexual chemistry, and baby… it is WORKING. But you can’t fix a marriage with just heat.
So they go on this retreat a last‑ditch attempt to save what’s left. And when I tell you the twist at the end had me clutching my chest? I did not see it coming. Even after things seemed resolved, Kim K. said “actually, no” and threw a grenade into the plot.
I’m still not sure if I love the ending or hate it, but I’m absolutely feral about the journey.
💛 What This Book Gets Right - Black marriage representation — messy, loving, layered, real. - Therapy in romance — Black characters getting help without stigma. - ADHD representation — handled with care. - Plus‑size FMC winning — Layla is soft, wealthy, desired, and powerful. - Black generational wealth — because yes, it exists. - Masculinity under pressure — Kylo’s arc is painfully accurate. - Spice with emotional stakes — intimacy that reflects the state of their marriage.
This book shows something we rarely get to see: Black couples who are in love, in lust, in therapy, in conflict, and still choosing each other.
It’s messy. It’s honest. It’s grown. And it’s exactly the kind of representation I want more of.
Kim K did it again with this book. the man characters Layla and Kylo are a married couple and they going through some up and down with their marriage . They have two beautiful children Bakari and Nina . They go to this family consulting retreat to get over stuff that happened in the past and get back to loving each other .Their so many up and down and secret that are hidden. One serve comes to light and it could affect the family that Layla and Kylo build. Layla made a mistake that she could lose her husband Kylo and it come to bit her in the ass. He had to step back from her because he was so hurt but Layla was hurt about the past when he went to Jail and the lost of they baby. I really loved this book is has so much love ,stuggle and healing

This entire book ate down! This was a story of love, pain, growth and self awareness. There was never a question about how Kylo felt about Layla, he just had a hard time feeling worthy of her love. Layla was so busy trying to be perfect for everyone that she lost herself in the process. I absolutely loved the fact that even with everything that they faced neither one of them wanted to give up on their love. The only thing that was missing from this book to me was an epilogue. I really wanted to read about them a few years after everything they went through.
I really enjoyed this story. It spoke to the reality of what marriage and forgiveness looks like. It wasn’t sugarcoated and it hit some real points. Layla had her nerve . Had me taking her side and then boom the real come out and she had me real mad when I should’ve only been a little mad lol. Kylo won me over. I couldn’t even stay upset with him cus he was really trying. I loved them as a couple and I truly loved their family dynamic. They were really good together, they just had to silence the outside noise. The growth and accountability was my favorite thing about this book. Reading this book was a journey but I loved it anyway. 10/10 highly recommend highly
Thought long and hard to DNF because again we have so many flashbacks that interrupted the current action. Personally felt we didn't need them. I enjoy this author's style but since I've clocked extensive flashbacks in her books I need to just not pick up. Kept reading because why not. This book is basically a long therapy session about this married couple who hit a rough patch. Kylo is cool qs the MMC but Layla was something else. And right when the crescendo hits the book ends. Leaving a feeling of incompleteness
This was another good read. I loved Kylo. He may not have been perfect, but he loved his family. He was really trying to make things work. Layla was so stubborn at times. I could understand her to an extent, but Kylo was trying. I was rooting for him the whole book. From their first meeting, Kylo knew he wanted Layla and didn’t let up. This book dealt with some real issues that a lot of marriages and families go through. You have to read it to find out if their marriage can withstand the storm!
Kylo and Layla ain’t even gonna lieeee…. I did not think they would make it! Adultry, Financial Inability, and straight up misguided guilt turned to anger!! Babyyyy this was definitely an emotional roller coaster, but an absolute amazing telling of what a marriage is and goes through. If love never fails, why wouldn’t you want to be with someone who loves you??
Kim K. gives us another romance with 100% realness. Layla & Kylo are married with kids, successful careers & loads of pain and secrets. The book follows them through their ebbs & flows and deals with topics like depression, child loss and adult ADHD. You will definitely enjoy the journey!
I love how this book gave you a different POV of a breakdown of a relationship. It’s not what we’re used to and I love that it showed that it’s not always greener on the other side.. I also love that even though the FMC is a BBW, her size is only mentioned a few times so you don’t get the stigma of her being a BBW and I love that
Another great read!! I really want to say that the therapist did her big one!!! I need her number frfr lol the reality of this storyline is insane!! What's going on with sister though? I'm so nosey lol but I know her story is coming eventually😁 love fmc and mmc and can't wait to read more about their journey to better 😛
This was such a perfect read for me! I was engaged from the very start; Kylo & Layla had their moments, but I loved that they fought for each other no matter what. I could feel the raw emotions of the characters through the author’s storytelling. Keep up the great work!
Arc Review: your husband made a mistake that affected your family. Relationship is strained and you decided to go cheat. 🥴🤦🏾♀️ Layla irritated me so bad with her attitude
There are far too many similes and two word sentences. Like let’s please write a complete sentence/thought! Also the story just did not flow well with all of the flashbacks.
