Jay Maxwell has always suspected foul play was involved in the plane crash that killed his husband. When his house is ransacked, he retains the services of Real Answers Investigations to help him figure out if he's also in danger.
Doug Anson wants Jay to not only find closure for his husbands death but to be safe. He feels a certain pull to the sexy coffee shop owner with bright blue eyes and a mile-wide smile that he hasn't felt in a long time. He shouldn't let his feelings get in the way of his work but he can't just walk away from Jay when it's all said and done.
What can I say? I was enjoying the narration immensely until the narrator began mixing up the character voices. He'd use one voice for Jay when it was Jay's POV with a different kind of gravelly voice for Doug, but then switch them when the character's POV changed. VERY DISTRACTING. Other than that major complaint the narration was quite good.
The story was kind of the same way - it started off very entertaining, but then when it came time to tie up the mystery it went off the rails quite a bit and wrapped up in a too-easy-and-kind-of Scooby Doo mystery way. I was just waiting for them to rip off his mask and be all, "If it weren't for you meddling kids!" (That doesn't happen, more's the pity.)
Bottom Line: The narration was entertaining but there is not enough substance in the story to recommend it.
Just finished and totally disappointed. Yap. Sadly. I'm a fan of this author and was really looking forward to reading this book, but it was totally harebrained. The story was told in an engaging way, so I read it in record time, only the whole solution to the 'mystery' - well, let me just say, plot-holes all over. And what happened to Ethan? And his pursuing of Jay? Where was the romance that supposedly developed between Jay and Doug???The whole thing went down within a few pages, wrapped up nicely but without any context. So, I turned the final page, sitting there with a big question mark in my head and have to say - reading another book of this? Nope, thanks.
So, the only rating I can give this is 1* - did not like it. Sorry book!
At a 127 page-count for the kindle edition, I’m not sure if this is a short story or novella. I like’d that the author didn’t sacrifice the investigation/deets of the mystery for a lot of on-page sex. The first person POV is always a challenge for me because I’m prickly about that form of narration and most of time, it isn’t done well enough, but I don’t as able to finish the book, though it isn’t my favorite type of narration for fiction.
If anyone is interested in this book/series, they are available in KU.
Jay's husband was killed in a plane crash, the authorities concluded it was an accident. Jay wasn't so sure, and when his home is ransacked, he employs private detective Doug to help. The feeling between them are tentative, but they grow the more time they spend together during the investigation. A cosy m/m mystery with a romantic undercurrent I found intriguing and engaging.
A nice short mystery read, introducing what looks like a new series, and a budding romance. Jay recently lost his husband in a plane crash, and now his house was broken into. Are the two related? Jay hires Doug, a private investigator to find answers.
I liked the characters a lot, I think they will make a nice couple. So I would give the next book in the series a try. As I said before, a budding romance between the MCs.
As for the mystery itself, it was ok, but a bit rushed at the end. I do give kudos for the amount of paper/research involved in the investigation, like in true life.
A quick pacey read. I liked the idea of the murder mystery - Jay's husband dying in a plane accident and then the house being ransacked. I do think a longer treatment would have benefitted both the development of the mystery and the personal stories of Jay and Doug. The ending was a bit quickly wrapped up so some story lines were left hanging, hopefully they will be picked up in book 2. I will probably read book 2 to see how the series may develop but I would prefer more depth to the mystery element in a series such as this.
This was a fairly short book that was focused on trying to solve the murder of Jay's husband. It was really lacking on the development of Jay's and Doug's relationship. It appeared hurried as if the author skipped a few months. I felt lost as I was reading certain parts because all of a sudden Jay and Doug are fighting an attraction to each other including Doug being jealous of Jay spending time with another friend- - seriously how did we get here?!!
Too many side characters to keep track of on the mystery side of things and little chemistry between the MCs (one of whom was banging his best mate through most of the story). Hate where the author chose to end this. The romance could have been taken a little further and given those who don't wish to read on a sense of closure to the story. But I guess then people might not buy the second book, right? :/
I love Aria Grace's work and her first stab at a mystery (no pun intended haha) was a fun read. I kept trying to figure out the clues and took several guesses at "who" and "why"! The romance blended into the story was fun to read and I loved the flirtation between Jay and Doug. I can't wait for the next book to see where their romance may go and see what little mystery Aria cooks up for us next!
It was a short read. Jay is a widow who still feels like there are unanswered questions about the death of his husband. Someone breaks into his house. He hires Doug to look into it. It was really rushed so the climax in the book just kinda fizzled. It was still a good read just not as mysterious as you would think.
I don't wish to be negative because I do value the effort of writing a story, but this one was so basic, I have trouble calling it a novel. The characters are one dimensional, and the plot is silly. I don't even understand where the title comes from.
This was nice. Short and sweet. Although, I think the shortness worked somewhat against it because it was hard to feel like the two protags actually fell in love.
And... I feel like I'm still left wondering what was going on with Jay's friend.
