After years of running from her brutal past, Casey Wilkes has finally managed to carve out a quiet life running an animal shelter with her best friend in a small Northern Wisconsin town. And even though her menagerie of unwanted animals can’t keep the nightmares at bay she can at least finally breathe again. But everything changes when a mysterious stranger walks into the shelter with news of her sister’s death and a plan to get custody of the niece Casey never knew she had.
Multi-millionaire Devlin Prescott made a promise to protect the child of the woman who saved his son’s life and if keeping that promise means dragging Casey back into her past kicking and screaming then so be it. After all, it’s just another business deal.
But what he finds is a damaged woman struggling to put the pieces of her life back together and her quiet strength, steely determination and gentle heart have him questioning his methods and his feelings.
Can he find a way to keep his promise to a little girl and still prevent Casey from slipping back into a life that may end up destroying her for good?
A captivating read. The revelations and twists were like jolt after electric jolts to my system. It had many triggers as the author warns in the first page. But a safe read. The gradual build of their relationship was beautiful. Kids and pets added more color to it. Hero’s stubborn act in the last part made me cheer. The villains deserved it. As for heroine, I just wanna hug her for all the brutalities she suffered. Recommended though again, mind the triggers.
The cover first attracted me to this book and then after reading the synopsis I decided to give it a try fully expecting this to be your standard free romantic 3 star read, which as I've said in the past isn't a bad thing it's just where most of the free reads seem fall for me, this one however is a level above that. Multi-millionaire Devlin Prescott is a man with a mission, his nanny Amanda died saving his son's life and he owes it to her to protect her daughter Isabel. Amanda's mother and step-father are not nice people and although Devlin has no idea just how evil these two are he knows they shouldn't have custody of a four year old, but since he has no legal claim to Isabel he needs to find Amanda's elusive younger sister Casey to help him. Once he finds Casey, Devlin does everything in his power to bring her back but he can't see past helping Isabel and doesn't realise initially the pressure he's putting on Casey and just how fragile and truly damaged she really is. This book was a surprise, the characters were well written and it was a pleasure to witness their growth and development as the book progressed. This is ultimately a romantic read and as such it worked very well, it's not dark, gritty or uncomfortable and while the subject matter was not an easy one it was handled well.
Overall Opinion: This was a solid 3 "just ok" stars. I felt like the romance element of the story was thrown in towards the end (along with a lot of other things). There was just soooo much else going on that I didn't really feel the connection. Was I entertained to where I kept reading? Yes. Will this go down as a favorite? No. Was it memorable? No, probably not.
Storyline: This is Casey and Devlin's story. They meet when Devlin finds Casey via a private investigator because he is notifying her of her sister's death. Her sister died while trying to protect Devlin's son from a carjacking gone wrong. Casey has been MIA for years and was unaware that her sister had a 4 year old daughter that was in temporary custody of Devlin. Devlin wants to fight Casey's parents for full custody of the daughter (because they are bad people that had abused both Casey and her sister). There is some major abuse themes, mention of a suicide, a father that doesn't know he's a father, politicians, parenting issues, questionable morals, an emotional trial, a kidnapping charge, believe it or not -- some more dramatic themes, and eventually some romance. The couple work through it all and find their HFN at the end.
POV: This was in third person narrative (one of my least favorites).
Overall Pace of Story: Ok. It did flow well for the most part, but I kept hoping for them to start developing the romance.
H rating: 3 stars. Devlin. He was just ok...
h rating: 2 stars. Casey. I wish she was more honest with Devlin.
Sadness level: Low. I can see where someone might get emotional, but I guess I'm just heartless ;)
Heat level: Low. One steamy scene at about the 85% mark. They don't even kiss until about 75%.
Descriptive sex: Yes
Sex scene with OW or OM:
Cheating:
Possible Triggers:
Closure: It was ok closure. I feel like the romance was just thrown in the end, but I would've liked them to be in a more committed situation...just a HFN
Devlin is used to using his money and connections to get whatever he wants and Casey is used to hiding from her past and protecting her secrets with ferocity. Devlin has custody of Casey's orphaned niece and needs Casey's secrets to keep them safe. It's a difficult road to romance and redemption for them all.
Despite containing mentioned characters and a little backstory on Jonas from “Salvation” - Kennedy doesn’t list this book in the reading order for her series, “Protectors”. On her website Kennedy states it isn’t her strongest writing and it’s not M/M(/M) which is what her readers prefer.
While I agree it’s not as strong as her other books, it’s still a solid read and I’d recommend it. If you find the jarring changes in POV to be offputting - rest assured she grows as a writer and handles this much more smoothly in future books.
I've been trying to read some of my Kindle Unlimited books because I tend to forget about them. I've been on a bit of a Sloane Kennedy series run and decided to go with a standalone for a change. It took me a while to warm to Casey as her past was drip fed, but man on man once her whole back story came to light my heart broke for what she had endured.
What I really liked about this was Devlin's patience with her, despite not knowing her story until I did. A quiet, patient, caring hero that was just perfect for her. He also was not afraid to apologise and put it right.
A sweet, slow burn romance with alternating POV's.
The emotions of this book are so deep. So felt. Every heart break, every wound lanced to be healed. Truly a wonderful read. It may be hard for some to read but there is a trigger warning so heed them if needed.
This book *repeatedly bangs head against desk* This book was like listening to a five year old when they tell you a story; 'There's this girl and this thing happens and that thing happens and then this and than that and this and that and this and that'. It just WOULD NOT STOP creating these ridiculous situations and then compounding upon them. Alright, let's start from the top, Casey is hiding from life and her past in a small town running an animal shelter when Devlin shows up and demands her help in winning custody of her niece away from Casey's abusive parents, Casey hums and haws and eventually is bullied into going (but she actually makes this an independent decision, she is actually like strong and shit *rolls eyes*, she's not being bullied at all!) Whatever, she shows up at Devlin's house and basically it's the Mary Poppins' set up; poor workaholic dad, neglected kids, etc, etc, and Casey helps them see the light and make them a family again, nyawwwwwwwww *vomits a little* MEANWHILE Devlin is trying to set up a case where he can get custody of Casey's niece because her sister left her in Devlin's custody (even though she was only the nanny for like 2 years) because their parents were abusive. Casey is a character witness against the parents and neglects to tell them about her prostitute past and her forced pornographic venture which has the case going in favour of the abusive parents because OBVIOUSLY!!!! Casey is all like :"Oh, I should have known that it wouldn't work, it was all for nothing" No it wasn't you stupid moron is was because YOU WITHHELD INFORMATION, YOU IDIOT!!! What did you think was going to happen??? MEANWHILE her abusive pimp shows up ready to get revenge on her running away and beating the crap out of him MEANWHILE Casey's real father, a senator, figures out that he is actually her dad, so she no longer needs to stalk him, and he is so blasé about finding about having an illegitimate daughter because you know, that happens every day MEANWHILE the evil parents are plotting revenge MEANWHILE Devlin is arrested because he hid his child and the niece so the abusive parents couldn't get their hands on her MEANWHILE Casey reveals that she was pregnant with her stepfathers child and is willing to have a DNA test to prove the abusive parent's unfitness as guardians MEANWHILE Casey now has to protect this new child from her abusive parents And it was at this point, at 87% way through the book that I just had enough. It was beyond silly, it was liking reading about 'The Bold And The Beautiful'. Not to mention the characters are never really fleshed out and Casey is an annoying, whiny shit. Yes I know she was abused and had a horrible life but she just plays a passive victim through most of the novel and rarely ever does anything interesting. Overall this book is a bit of a mess.
Written in third person. Only one sexy scene and no real humor. The plot was all over the place at times. A couple of tissues are needed for details of past abuse as well and assault against a main character in the present.
I typically prefer dual first person POV romance books but third person is okay if done well. Unfortunately this book wasn’t done well. While yes, there are some editing issues, the biggest issue that I had with the structure was that the book didn’t show only one voice per chapter or section but instead would switch several times within the same chapter sometimes after only one chapter. This was distracting and didn’t allow the reader to stay in the moment. I’ve read most of the Protectors series and book 1 of that series follows Jonas and his lovers (written in triple first person POV) so I read this book in order to get more background information. While this book was worth reading, it was slower than I expected and didn’t have a romantic element until much later in the book and even then it seemed to be more of an afterthought.
There were several elements during the big court case that didn’t work for me but I don’t want to spoil anything.
Overall, I’m glad that I read this book but this author’s writing definitely gets better in her later publications.
I had already read Absolution when I happened across some review of this book. I’m so happy I did. This is one of those stories that just grabs you and you think about even after you are reading another book. It really sets up the characters for The Protectors Series. I got so much background on Casey, Jonas and Devlin. It brought a lot into light about why they behave the way they do. It also really set up the understanding for Casey and Jonas’s relationship. When I read Casey’s story I could have cried. It made such a life so unbearable yet I saw how strong and good Casey is. I also got a appreciation for the author’s style character. All are strong, believable and made me want to know them. I think this really should have been advertised as the first book of the series but either way it’s a great story and I’m glad I found it.
The way Casey backstabbed Devlin by hiding the whole Chicago thing was really not a naïve mistake and shows how manipulative she is.
I thought she was a cool character when I read Jonas story but nope. She is an opportunistic and simply pretends to be good. Too self centered.
Devlin was so driven and the way he treated his son was simply heartbreaking. My heart squeezed when I read the scene when he gets a cloth to sweep the floor. Simply squeezed.
The end and how the Senator simply saves the day was too much fiction but why not.
I wish we knew more about her son that she put for adoption. What happened to him, and how was her relationship with him.
God I just love Sloane Kennedy’s books. Her books always draw me in and leave me wanting more. They have the power to affect my mood. I could be having a terrible day and reading one of her books brightens my day. I find myself laughing, but crying even more because her books contain heart breaking, dark topics. Let’s not forget the HEA’s she leaves us with. I always feel giddy when finished one of her books. It’s pretty much the same thing every time, I am wiping away my tears and smiling like a fool at the same time.
So Glad This Wasn’t the First Sloane Kennedy Book I Read
If this was the first one of her books I read, I’d have never read another one. There was no flow, the writing was unnecessarily secretive and there were multiple POV switches in every chapter. I started reading this just to get more insight into Jonas in the Protector series and DNF. It was so bad. I highly recommend every other book of hers but it’s like this was written by someone else
I loved this book....don't get me wrong. But I hate it when an author slowly plods along with the plot and then in the last 20 pages rushes through a whole CRAP TON of plot and surprises and revelations. It feels rushed, there's never enough detail or info and you feel like you have whiplash at the end.
You know, as many times as I have read Sloane's Protector series, I somehow missed this book. This fills in a lot of blanks and answers some outstanding questions as well.
This is an awesome read. Yes, even for M/F. If you are as big a fan of Sloane as I am or just looking for an intense and exciting read, I definitely recommend you pick this up.
I simply loved this. I loved both of the main characters and I lobe how the book makes you feel. the writing style is brilliant. I loved the relationship building between the characters as well.
If you haven't read this, go ahead and do yourself a favour now. I don't have much to say but I hope you take a step and read this because you will most likely love it.
It was a reread and I loved the story as much as I loved it 4 years ago. Casey Wilkes lived through horror and pain. Her phonies and commitment issues were obviously from the beginning. But discovering along with Devlin Prescott what happened gave me chills a second time. So happy to move on to Jonas story in Absolution. Another reread for me.
Sometimes the POV in this is a bit much. It's kind of like someone watching a poker game, walking around the table looking at everyone's cards. The narrator lets the reader in on the character's thoughts, but switches between characters from one paragraph to the next. The story is great, but I could see this book bothering readers who have issues with unusual POV.
Good story. My heart broke for Casey, but Devlin was beside her as she put herself back together. He didn't try to "fix" her, but helped her realize that she had worth and meant something to those in her life.
Ebook. I have fallen in love with these crossover stories. This is my first outside the Protector Seies and I loved it. Thanks Sloane Kennedy for the hours of entertainment you have given me.
I really enjoyed this story. I enjoyed getting Casey and Devlin’s story after meeting them in Jonas’s Book Absolution (The Protectors Series) Book 1. I did find the multiple POV’s a bit jarring as whoever the section is about isn’t headed up with the person’s name and the POV changes multiple times throughout a chapter but Sloane has perfected her writing since this book was released and now head’s up each chapter with the person whose POV we’re getting. By the end of the book I hardly noticed the multiple POV’s as I was that engrossed by what I was reading. Man, it was completely heartbreaking reading about what Casey went through as a child living with her mother and step-father, not only was her and her sister severely physically ab*sed but Casey also suffered years of her step-father r*ping her. Devlin was an entitled a*sehole at the start of the book and I really enjoyed seeing his softer side come out the longer Casey lived with them. I’m glad that Devlin forced Casey’s hand initially to get her to live with him to help keep her deceased sisters daughter, her niece Isabel out of her mother and step-father’s clutches. It really ended up being the best thing for Casey as she found a home with Devlin, his son Ryan and Isabel and it was also the best thing for Devlin and the kids as she opened Devlin’s eyes to finally see that his son Ryan was slowly d*ing inside with trying to constantly please his Dad Devlin. Jonas also got to be part of their family which is awesome since his parents are complete a*seholes, as who kicks out their 14 year old son with absolutely nothing all because he’s gay. I’m heading back to the Protectors’ Series and Mav and Eli are up next which I’m looking forward to but I think I better keep the tissues handy as I think it’s going to be a very emotional read after everything Eli had already endured by the time he was 15 years old, let alone what Mav’s been through. I’d recommend this book, series, universe and author to everyone.
1. Characters: ★★★★☆ (Was reticent that I wouldn't like this m/f relationship but I ended up liking it a lot, they fitted really well together) 2. Atmosphere: ★★★★☆ (I have no regist of having read this before but everything felt very familiar) 3. Writing: ★★★★☆ (Liked it) 4. Plot: ★★★★☆ (Dramatic without it being over the top, loved everything except the last few chapters that had a quicker pace than the other chapters) 5. Enjoyment: ★★★★☆ (Happily surprised)
Woman who wants to be left alone, and a man who's not looking for love.
I can't believe it wasn't until I read Absolution for the second time that I realize there was a story bout Casey and Devlin. It seemed like it because there was obvious history and some details left out that seemed like we should know them, but this was so much better than expected - AND young Jonas is featured as well, albeit more sparsely as he wasn't focal to this story.
This found family story is a great reminder that although blood is important, it's not the only thing that makes a family, and we should always be open to new things and people coming into our lives. An absolute gem!
This is a story about survival. It is a story about love, and strength. Devlin and Casey help each other to heal. Devlins compassion, strength, and determination to make Casey see the wonderful person that she is allows her to see herself in a new light. One where she is more than just the victim of horrific abuse. At the same time that Devlin is changing Casey she is changing him. Devlin loves both of the children fiercely but he doesn't realize how his emotional distance and lack of attention affect them until Casey shows him.
I love stories where you feel the connection of the characters right down to your bones, and that's just what Letting Go does. You don't just read about the characters. You KNOW them. You smile when they are happy. You feel there pain when they hurt. Being able to let the reader connect with characters like this shows great talent.
