Clara Haggard couldn't escape the past, so she’s determined to murder her way out of it.
Instead of going to the soda fountain with friends and flirting with young men, Clara spends her Friday night watching the bloody trench coat of her victim burn. He deserved it, Clara tells herself. Just like the others she has killed. The sweat dripped down her forehead on that July night in Brooklyn. Clara stands in her backyard, dolled up with the makeup she hides from her father to seduce her victims. One man closer to her goal, and the voices in her head would finally go away. No one, not even her priest, can stop her.
Oliver Anderson discovers his brother’s body lying on the floor in his apartment with a stab wound to the chest. His brother shouldn’t have been cheating on his wife. Oliver should have done more to stop him from meeting with that young woman. Yet, he did not. And now his brother is dead. Oliver must hunt down the person responsible. He promised his brother’s wife this.
When Clara sets her sights on Oliver as the last man standing between her and freedom, will he survive long enough to right the wrongs his brother left behind?

First, I have to mention the cover art—it is absolutely stunning and perfectly sets the mood for what is inside!
Until Your Father Comes Home is a masterfully written, character-driven psychological suspense novel that deeply explores trauma, family secrets, and the lasting effects of the past. The writing is incredibly atmospheric, and Clara is a compelling protagonist whose story unfolds beautifully layer by layer.
Rather than relying on constant, predictable twists, the novel focuses heavily on rich character development, deep emotion, and simmering psychological tension. The deliberate, slow-burn pacing allows the reader to truly appreciate the depth of the story as the pieces gradually come together.
Readers who enjoy thoughtful, immersive, and emotionally resonant suspense will find a lot to love here. It is a haunting, memorable, and highly rewarding read!
I had no idea what this book was about going in and honestly wasn't sure what to expect. Clara is a fascinating character from the start. She believes the men she's killing deserve what they're getting, and I was immediately curious about what had happened in her life to make her think that way. The author does a great job letting you immerse yourself into Claras head trying to understand her motivations . There were several times I thought I knew where the story was headed, only to realize I was completely off. This story pleasantly surprised me ! If you enjoy darker thrillers with flawed characters and a mystery that keeps you invested, I'd definitely recommend this one. Thank you Meaghan Dwyer- author for the ARC. All thoughts are my own
This book is available July 7th - grab your copy it’s so worth it !
I was sent this book by the author and I had no idea what to expect when I started reading it, but it turned out to be an excellent, dark, twisty, thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Clara Haggard is a psychopath ! She murders men whom she thinks deserve to be killed. Oliver Anderson writes obituaries, and when he discovers the dead body of his brother. he vows to hunt down the person responsible. But is Oliver now the hunter or the hunted ? As Clara sets her sights on Oliver, a game of cat and mouse begins.
Set against a vivid and deeply captivating 1950’s Brooklyn backdrop, this book was a cross between The Spin and The Butcher, both books I loved reading. Meaghan paints the setting graphically, with references to 1950’s fashion and music, and the restrictions placed upon women by society, all adding to a strong sense of atmosphere.
As the narrative unfolds, we discover what drives our unhinged female lead character Clara, to commit these terrible crimes. The trauma and grief she has suffered, along with the darker truths which unfold, ensured the pace was fast and addictive, and kept me truly invested in her story.
This is definitely one to pick up if you like thrillers based on past trauma, dark stories with heavy topics, serial killers with mental health issues and a strong female lead that brings a hard hitting message about her motives for revenge. An extremely entertaining story and one which I highly recommend. 4.5 stars rounded up.
Many thanks to @mdwyerbooks for the ARC. Until Your Father Comes Home is out in 7th July 2026.
Here we say " Chapeau" to this author. This was a great psychological thriller! I must say that I am a psychiatric nurse so it was even more fun to read this one. It is a medium-paced thriller where you constant ask yourself: What.... But this is such a clever and shocking story, it is different then your typical normal thriller. The characters are well described. The writing makes it, like you are there with them. Read this one if you want a different thriller with some unhinged characters...
Thank you so much to the author, Meaghan Dwyer for gifting me an ARC copy of this book!
This thriller was so full of twists that I never saw coming. It had me on the edge of my seat wanting to keep reading that I had to force myself to stop a few times so I could go to work or to bed! I loved the dual POV and the alternating chapters of present and future. Thriller lovers, make sure you add this to your TBR!! Coming soon: July 7
