Opposing Self continues Raven’s journey from H.P. Biehl’s debut novel, Shadow Self. As I read this sequel of this mystical series revolving around the concepts of ancient Chinese mythology and modern cultures, I once again found myself delving into this unique world to understand the nature of light and darkness.

Opposing Self reads as a dark mirror to Shadow Self, which focused on Raven harnessing her ability to use light, and honing her mind against darkness as she trains with the monks near the Mountain of Solitude.

Where everything in Shadow Self focused on serenity, wisdom, and self-control, Opposing Self is about Raven confronting the darkness that lurks within all humanity, and how darkness can route within any of us.

Opposing Self is an infusion of the same self-reflection and learning about oneself that its predecessor was, but about learning more about darkness, with splashes of horror elements woven into it.

Again, H.P. does a great job with giving us many looks into different cultures across a variety of time periods, in addition to painting a lot of historical context behind each given setting throughout the book.

I came away with a lot of revelations I didn’t expect, even after reading Shadow Self. Yet I believe the journey to understand darkness is natural for Raven in her journey to find balance, and herself.

I recommend this sequel to anyone who likes fantasy, deep character introspection and narrative, and very excellent world-building.

I was excited to dive into this sequel and wasn't disappointed! Opposing Self is an awesome continuation to Shadow Self and a great expansion of this intriguing fantasy world. Readers get more action and adventure, but still a good emphasis on character development and meaningful connection. Raven's struggles feel genuine, even from the start when she's processing how she's being pulled between two worlds:

"I keep going back because I'm scared if I don't, I'll lose them completely."

She continues to grow in this second book and I'm eager to see what happens next. This one ends on a bit of a cliffhangers, so can't wait for book three.

I’ve got to say, this book took a turn into the dark side compared to Book 1. Biehl has taken her writing to the next level, as this second book has more battle scenes (with in-depth, gory descriptions) and a handful of bloodshed. I enjoyed this book because there was more character development and the antagonist was clearly defined. Opposing Self was suspenseful, like a movie playing out in your head. Note that this does end on a cliffhanger, as there is a Book 3.

I was so happy to have been chosen as one of her ARC readers. This review reflects my true opinions and feelings.

I received an ARC from the author. After reading Shadow Self last year, I was really looking forward to the sequel, and Opposing Self did not disappoint. The story is packed with action, witty dialogue, and strong character development. H.P. Biehl delivers surprising plot twists that kept me guessing, and by the end, I honestly did not know what to believe anymore.

Readers who enjoy Asian fantasy, urban fantasy, action, and mystery will find a lot to love here. Opposing Self left me wanting more, and I cannot wait for the final installment of the series. What an amazing read!

Opposing Self takes Raven Guang’s story in a deeper, more thought-provoking direction. I loved how the author blurs the lines between light and darkness, making every revelation feel meaningful. Raven grows a lot in this book as she questions everything she once believed, and her struggles feel genuine. The mix of mystery, mythology, and emotional conflict kept me invested throughout. A strong sequel that leaves you eager to see what happens next.

I loved Shadow Self, so I was excited to read Opposing Self and see what happened to Raven next. This book gave me more of the characters, action, and hidden world I enjoyed in the first book, while also making Raven’s story feel bigger. I liked seeing her face new problems, learn more about herself, and grow stronger as the story continued. It was a great follow-up, and now I want to know how everything ends.

I read Shadow Self first, so I wanted to know what would happen to Raven next. Opposing Self kept me interested because Raven has to deal with Nate, more secrets, and choices that are not easy for her. I liked seeing how much she changed from the first book, and now I want to know how the series ends.
