When the gods came for my sister, they expected obedience.
Instead, they got me.
Chosen as this year’s Courted Prize for the Eternal Trials, my sister has been dragged to the capital to await whichever victor survives the gods’ brutal competition and claims her as their reward.
I have only one way to save her.
I have to enter the trials myself and win her freedom.
The problem is, I’m not a warrior. I’ve never held a weapon, fought a battle, or trained for the twisted games the gods created for their own amusement. The moment I enter the arena, I’m certain I’ve just signed my own death warrant.
Then a powerful, devastatingly handsome competitor steps forward and volunteers to become my partner.
Now I’m trapped in a deadly competition where every challenge is designed to break me, forced to rely on a man whose strength should terrify me and whose heated looks leave me feeling far too much for someone fighting to survive. And he’s only the first. With every trial, more powerful, intoxicating men are drawn into my orbit, blurring the lines between rival, ally, and something far more dangerous.
No matter how my pulse stutters beneath their attention, I can’t afford distraction.
Because this isn’t about desire.
If I win, my sister and I walk free.
If I fail, I die... and Lyra’s fate will be sealed forever.
ON BROKEN BONDS is the first book in a slow burn to scorching hot reverse harem romantasy filled with deadly trials, forced proximity, forbidden attraction, simmering tension, and dangerously irresistible men no woman should ever trust.

Starting a book with secondhand embarrassment? Pure gold. 😂
The descriptions of certain... male attributes had me laughing so hard. Instead of the usual over-the-top romance descriptions, the author uses lines like, "It's barely an introduction. A footnote. A polite wave from a great distance." I was immediately hooked.
Once the humor settles, the world-building shines. The author has a beautiful way of writing emotions that makes you feel like you're living every moment alongside Nyx. When she hurts, you're hurting. When she's angry, you feel that anger too. That's the kind of writing I love.
Nyx is a fantastic FMC—sharp, resilient, and hardened by tragedy without losing her compassion. She's determined to survive and protect the people she loves, and watching her grow was one of my favorite parts of the story.
The love interests each bring something different. Thorian is the stoic, dependable anchor. Fenric completely stole my heart with his warmth, shyness, and protective nature. Talon, the charming vampire, had me wanting much more page time because every scene with him was entertaining.
My biggest issue was the repetition. Certain descriptions, conversations, and emotional moments are repeated throughout the book, sometimes almost word for word. Even some of the romantic scenes felt too similar, making moments that should have felt unique lose some of their impact. I found myself flipping back more than once because I thought I'd accidentally reread a chapter.
It's honestly a shame because the author has an incredible gift for emotional storytelling and immersive world-building. With a little tighter editing, this easily could have been a 4½- or even 5-star read for me.
Beautiful writing, memorable characters, and an engaging fantasy world held back by noticeable repetition. I'm still invested enough to continue the series because I think this author has a lot of talent.
Her family has lost everything because her mother refused a god. So, he cursed them and little by little everything fell away. Now, it's just her and her sister, Lyra, and two servants who refuse to walk away and leave them. Debtors of the vilest sort are knocking at their door and threatening the last that they have. In a desperate attempt Nyx tries to buy them some time...but no one wants to get on the wrong side of a petty and vengeful god. Of course, things only get worse when she comes home to her sister being taken...as this year's prize. This is the last straw. Nyx offers herself, but is rejected, but she's given a shard of hope...she can enter...as long as she gets a partner. Fine. Game on. This is a slow-burn romance with Nyx not eager to trust anyone...and with good reason. But when a demi-god offers her help...she'd be a fool to refuse. This book draws you in with some humorous moments to keep the story from becoming overly dark (for those who hate such things). Nyx is such a dedicated character, but I like her overall so far. She has some sass, but it's not overly done at this moment. Let's hope it stays that way. Warning! Cliffhanger ahead! LOL! But I'm eager to find out what happens next.
I am loving this new series by Lacey Carter Andersen. We meet Nyx whose family has been going through a rough patch. When the Gods come for her sister to be used as Courted Prize for the Eternal Trials she gets angry and decides to go to the Gods to request they let her go and has to enter the trials herself in order to save her. Nyx is this really sweet and caring woman who just wants her family safe. We see her strength very quickly in the beginning of the story. Here you have a woman who is not a warrior but you see the strength in her determination to save her sister. That strength is felt throughout the entire book. We meet Thorian who is the grumpy, colder type but beneath it all there is more to him than meets the eye. We next meet Fenric who is strong and kind. He has that energy that just makes you comfortable with him. The chemistry between Nyx and the two men is felt throughout the story and you just know eventually it is going to heat up beautifully. This is a slower burn that has you absolutely delighted as we see the connections form as the story develops. There are dangers and trials they are facing that had you rooting for them to complete. Then we get to the end with a very major cliffhanger that has me absolutely excited to see what is going to happen next. This is absolutely a fantastic read that doesn’t disappoint.
I like this story.. Not necessarily my favorite of Lacey's books and still a good read. There's action, challenges, banter, and a woman who collects her men along the way.
On Broken Bonds was an “edge of your seat” read once things started, and only got more page turning from there. From the very first chapter, I was completely invested in Nyx’s character. She’s a fierce, resilient FMC who has endured so much, yet never loses the determination to keep fighting for herself and the people she loves. Her determination and loyalty to those she loves throughout the story was one of my favorite parts of the book. Thorian intrigues me. I’m hopeful to see behind his walls as the story goes forward. As little as his facial expressions give away, when Nyx can see something it’s usually significant. I’m really hoping he gets worse at keeping his guard up or she gets better at reading his little tells. His unwavering loyalty, patience, and the way he stands by Nyx—even when everything seems stacked against them—made their relationship feel genuine and deeper than either wants to acknowledge. It takes a lot to trust someone even when your mind is telling you it’s insane to. Then there’s Fenric, whose arrival added another layer of complexity to the story. Watching the trust between Nyx, Thorian, and Fenric evolve was captivating. Sometimes it was a little funny, and sometimes you just adored that the characters trusted each other enough to roll with it, regardless of how sketchy it was. It made each relationship feel earned and meaningful rather than rushed. They have no choice but to rush. They can choose not to trust each other though. And choosing to in these circumstances, makes the trust feel that much more connecting. Talon is also a reoccurring connection in the wind, for the right now. I loved the scene at the Gods Party, but I’m really excited to see how he manages to integrate himself into Nyxs (and Thorians, bc let’s face it, he’s the one to convince) good graces. Fenrics addition to the team might look like a cake walk compared to Talons. This book did an amazing job creating characters who feel real, flawed, and easy to become attached to. The emotional moments hit hard, the chemistry was undeniable, and the ending left me eagerly anticipating more from this world.
When it comes to books by Lacey, you can’t really go wrong. I haven’t read any books from her that aren’t good. This one is another good one and a great start to the series.
Nyx, our FMC, is a strong, kind, and smart person who will do anything to protect the ones she loves, and that person is her younger sister Lyra. When Lyra was taken from their home because she was selected to be the courted prize, Nyx will do anything to get her back. She goes into the town to seek the gods and offers a bargain to replace her sister and take Lyra’s place, but her request was denied. The only way she could get Lyra back was to enter a competition to win her sister.
Without Nyx’s knowledge, 3 other people were taking an interest in her. There’s something about her that draws her to them. Thorian was the first to notice her. He volunteered to be her partner in the trial. She couldn’t understand why Thorian, a stranger, would want to help her, but beggars can’t be choosers, so she agrees. Thorian’s background was a mystery at first, but we learn he is a demi-god and has his own reasons for wanting to win. At a dinner event, Nyx met Fenric, a berserker with a heart of gold. His personality is like a warm puppy. His family was also taken from him while he was away, and he was there to win to get them back as well. Then there was the most mysterious one of our MMCs, Talon, the handsome vampire. Talon is also drawn to Nyx without realizing it until he smells her blood after saving her, realizing it could be the reason. We don’t know much about Talon’s backstory, but I could tell his may be like Thorian’s.
Ok, so something different about this story is Nyx and Fenric can’t fight or have any magic to bring to the table. Well, Fenric doesn’t have magic, but Nyx? I can see there’s more to her than she’s letting out. This is a slow burn; no spice in this first book, but it works. They’re all trying to survive the first day of the trial, so sexy time can wait for now. I can’t wait for book 2 because I have a feeling Nyx’s hidden powers will reveal more.
Broken Bonds is a refreshing and capitivating new take for mythology and gods. Nyx is exactly the kind of FMC I love—fierce, resilient, and incredibly brave. Everything she endures is driven by one goal: saving her sister. No matter how impossible the odds become, she refuses to give up, and that determination made it impossible not to root for her every step of the way. One of my favorite parts of the book was the incredible cast of MMCs. Thorian, the demigod who gives Nyx the chance to enter the deadly competition, immediately captured my attention with his strength and hidden depth. Fenric, the berserker, brought an intensity and loyalty that made every scene with him memorable, while Talon, the vampire, added mystery, charm, and just enough danger to keep me wanting more. Each of them has a unique connection with Nyx, and I loved that their relationships developed naturally rather than feeling rushed. The competition itself is brutal, made even worse by the gods overseeing it. They are manipulative, cruel, and treat lives as nothing more than entertainment, making every challenge feel even more dangerous. Their arrogance and complete disregard for the competitors had me constantly hoping someone would finally make them answer for their actions. The world-building was immersive, the action kept me glued to the pages, and the emotional moments landed just as powerfully as the thrilling ones. Between the fascinating mythology, the high-stakes trials, and the slow-building relationships, this book was incredibly difficult to put down. I'm eagerly awaiting Nyx's next steps when book two comes.
Nyx has been holding it together since her parents died, even though they had been cursed by the God Vaktor, when her mother refused him. Nyx is trying to take care of the farm and her sister Kyra. When Kyra is carried off to be the Courted Prize, one noble daughter is chosen each year, taken to the Capital dressed up and is promised as a bride for whoever one the Eternal Trials; sound great except you don't how many husbands you could end up. Kyra is young and not strong. Nyx goes to the capital to beg the God to take her instead. They laugh and say she can join the Eternal Trials if she can find a partner. How is she going to find a partner? She is approached by Thorian and says he will be her partner. Why what secrets does Thorian have? Nyx has no choice she takes him up on his offer. When they go to the Place to be introduced as a team. Nyx runs in to Fenric a very nice man except he is a berserker. And then there is the vampire that saved her from the man eating plant. The teams are selected they are made of berserker, vampires, warriors, shifters, and warlocks. The rules are there are no rules but to win all members of a team must reach the end. However, people can switch teams. As the trials begin there horrible creatures and tasks that they all have to go through and nothing is static it is every changing environment with deadly consequences. And although I love this author and story I am so....did she have to end it with a cliffhanger just there! So I will be so waiting for the next book. I am pouting!
Talk about an Uno Reverse in the “Rags to Riches” feel good stories 😱 This book seems bleak from the get-go. Nyx is tracing a grain loss that makes her already slim feed storage even slimmer. She comes home and they’re supposed to be celebrating, presumably a harvest season of sorts but it’s meager eating. Then the debt collectors show up. As if it couldn’t get any worse, Lyra is stolen as the coveted Prize for the Gods’ Games. Despite it all, Nyx remains strong, and not only sets out to save her sister, but to face the Gods themselves for mercy for her sister. Instead of granting this mercy, cruelly the Gods decide if she wants her sister, she has to not only compete, but WIN the games. The problem is, she needs a partner…
Fenric- A berserker, most people with half a mind fear him but not Nyx. When they meet in the competition ballroom, there’s attraction from both. He joined to avenge his stolen family, and that’s all he lives for-until Nyx. The longer they’re in the Trials the more he’s pulled to her.
Thorian- Mysterious, & vengeful (though we don’t know why at first), he meets Nyx at the Tavern. Immediately he volunteers to be her partner but there’s some tensions when secrets are forced to come to light. In the Trials, attraction gets stronger between him & Nyx and maybe a little jealousy between Nyx & Fenric.
Talon- Cold, calculated, & a vampire. He meets Nyx in the gardens before the Trials and is captivated by her. Though we don’t get much yet on him, I have a feeling he’s important later
Ivor always impressed upon me to change what I couldn’t accept, and accept what I couldn’t change. I can’t change this, and so acceptance is the only way to move forward.
I didn't know what to expect going into this book but since I've started to read Lacey I've learnt to expect the unexpected and this book was no different. If your a hunger games lover then this book is for you. Expect mean gods, trials, demigods, shifters, berserkers, vampires and magic it has a mix of them all.
Just in the first chapter we have our FMC try and catch thief's trip end up in water slip and find herself with 3 naked workers seeing peens for the first time. It was so quick and innocent it's hilarious.
When Nyx's parents die she is left in charge of her sister Lyra and the farm which has been cursed by Valtor one of the gods and is slowly falling into disrepair. Lyra isn't well so when she's taken from the farm to be this year's courted prize the only thing NY can do is travel to the main city to plead the gods to release her sister or let her take her place.
But the gods have other plans and tell her the only way she can get her sister back is by joining the trials herself and winning them. Enter our first mmc the brooding demigod who has attempted the trials 5 times before.
Our second mmc is a berserker whose family was taken to be used as slaves and he wants to join the trial with his friend to get money and wealth to save them.
I won't give much more away except it's so good but does leave you on a cliff which I have come to expect from lacey books.
LCA is back with another high fantasy, and this one involves a stolen sister and one of my favorite tropes, deadly trials. There are vampires and warlocks, demi-gods and berserkers, but the real monsters are the gods themselves. They are cold, capricious, and not to be trusted. Especially Valtor. Ugh! I wouldn’t spit on him if he were on fire. I don't know how, but by the end of this series I need him to get what he deserves, or I'm going to lose it.
Valtor has it out for Nyx. A lot is going against her before she even enters the competition. However, Nyx shouldn't be underestimated. There have been hints that she's something other, and I'm dying to know what. Nevertheless, Nyx is not going to break. She has enough courage, determination, and love for her sister to make it through on will (and luck) alone. And with Thorian and Fenric by her side, with at least one more waiting in the wings, she might just make it. The guys couldn't be more different. They clash a little but are exactly who Nyx needs.
For whatever reason, it took me a little longer than usual, but I still finished it in a day. I enjoyed the plot, and the world-building was incredible, and the MCs were very likable. On Broken Bonds was very entertaining, but be warned that the cliffhanger was a jaw-dropper. On Broken Bonds is great for fantasy readers who enjoy brutal competitions, cruel gods, and underdog protagonists.
Oh my gods - what a THRILLING start to the new fantasy RH series by LCA! As always, a total stunner, she never misses :)
We start off this book introduced to Nyx, a noble lady in a land of gods and magic and more. Nyx is, as all eldest daughters, doing her best to hold together what is left of her family. Her sister, Lyra, gets taken as a coveted prize for the gods, a token to be won in what is essentially this kindgom’s version of the Games. As anyone would do, she volunteers to enter the Trials herself to win back her sister.
In a major action packed adventure, this book focuses on Nyx navigating the beginnings of the trial, with her partner Thoren, and possibly some more allies along the way. Think of this story as a cross between The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson, adding in the usual brand of LCA with her twists and turns, the drama, the heat, the buildup, and seriously kickass FMC character development!
Definitely cannot wait for the next installment to see what Nyx and her men get up to - will she be able to win the trial and get her sister back safely? Will the evil gods face the punishment and humiliation of betting against her? Will she find something more in the competition, something that would make this all worth it? So many questions - highly recommend to anyone who loves a good fantasy, action packed story filled with magic, mayhem, blossoming love, and more.
I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I enjoyed this so much, I kinda devoured it. I cannot entirely put my finger on exactly why, but that isn't always the point when you consume any kind of content or media. The draw for me is obviously an RH, but it was the FMC, and her definitely foolish determination to take care of those around her, even to her own detriment, that really interested me.
Nyx, poor girl, has the oldest child syndrome. The one with all the responsibilities, taking everything on herself, even more so after her parents die.
Nyx has had a lovely upbringing, better than most. That all went pear-shaped when her mother was coveted by a selfish god, Valtor, who wanted her for himself regardless of her own wishes. Nyx's mother refused, and Valtor cursed the family and their lands, watching them fall into ruin. Nyx's parents die, and now she is left with the fallout and the responsibility of caring for her sister, the land, and the people who live there. But the gods are not finished with her family. When her sister is taken as the prize for the winner of a deadly game thrown by the gods, Nyx is forced to act.
Nyx finds she cannot save her sister alone, and along the way she meets some interesting men and finds herself drawn to them. The story finishes on a cliffhanger, and I need to know what happens, how it happens, and I am already longing for the next book.
This is the first book in which is looking to be an amazing new series.
After her sister is taken to be the Courted Prize for the annual Eternal Trials, Nyx travels to the city to request her return from the gods. She evens offers herself in exchange for her sister as her sister is in ill health and Nyx fears she would not survive the life that she would live as a prize bride to the winners of the trials. The request is cruelly denied leaving Nyx with no option but to enter the trials and win her sister back herself.
This was a really good first book, the characters all have their own reasons for entering the trials, whether it be power, money or just to get their sister back! There is already that delicious tension bubbling away between Nyx, Thorian and Fenric who have partnered up for the trials but I am waiting for another character to join them as there is a connection between a certain vampire and Nyx too!
I don't even want to talk about the cliffhanger at the end so I won't! Needless to say that means that I am picking up the next book as soon as it releases. That ending!
Wow what a great start to another action packed adventure by fire. Like similar series I inhaled this book in a matter of days and it has left me wanting more.
This story pulls on your heart strings from the very start as you meet Nyx who’s struggling to keep her family estate running. She will do anything for her younger sister, including entering the trial of the gods - no place for a noblewoman who has no fighting experience and has never left home in her 23 years.
Through chance encounters over the book, we meet three men who will end up being the MMC’s and they do not disappoint. Therion, Talon and Fenric are all very different men and I look forward to reading more about them as the series continues.
The trials are similar to the labyrinth series where they encounter all sorts of creatures with challenges escalating at the whims of the gods boredom. With the cliff hanger at the end of this book I am glad there is not a huge wait until book 2. I am excited to see what further challenges are in store for the team
She is struggling to save her family’s home & her sister after they had been cursed by a god who didn’t like the fact that her mother turned him down.
But now she is fighting to protect her sister & keep her family home running.
But when that same god announces her sister is going to be the courted prize for the Eternal Trials, Nyx is determined to save her from a horrible fate.
But doing so now entails having her sign up for the trials instead of swapping places with her sister. But she has to enlist the help of an unknown partner in order to do that.
In this process she meets three men who have already found a way to sink past her defenses. And now she is fighting for her life with two of them through the trials.
I immediately found the story line very interesting & intriguing. I wanted to see more of her relationship with each man & watch it grow. I am very curious to see what happens next because I feel like her “secret” is gonna be something entirely more than what she thinks & very powerful.
An addictive start to a romantasy reverse harem series filled with danger, gods, deadly trials, and slow-building romance. From the first chapter, I was completely invested in Nyx's journey and couldn't put it down.
Nyx is a wonderful heroine—brave, determined, and willing to sacrifice everything to save her younger sister. Watching her leave behind the only life she's ever known to face the brutal Eternal Trials was both emotional and inspiring. Even without combat experience, her courage and resilience make her impossible not to root for.
Fast-paced! The trials kept me on the edge of my seat, with plenty of suspense, unexpected twists, and high-stakes moments that made it impossible to stop reading.
The three male leads each bring something unique to the story, and I loved the chemistry and mystery surrounding them. Their relationships with Nyx develop naturally, leaving me eager to see how their bonds grow throughout the series.
Ends in a cliffhanger that immediately had me wanting the next book.
Lady Nyx and her younger sister live together trying to keep their home and land going after its cursed by a god that their mother refused. After their parents death its left to them to keep the failing land running and they and pay their parents deaths.
Then Lyra is taken to be that years courted prize for the winners of the eternal trials and Nyx will do anything to get her back even facing the gods themselves where shes told the only way to get her back is to enter the trials.
Teaming up with Thorian who has his own secrets, she enters the trials. There she meets Fenric a berserker who is entering to save his own family and Talon the vampire. All 3 men feel mysteriously drawn to Nyx.
This is an amazing opening to this new series. The world its based in with lords and ladies, gods and monsters is brilliantly detailed.
Its the opening to another amazing Lacey Carter Anderson series.
The first half of the book was pretty slow and boring, I feel like there was a lot of unnecessary description to the missing grain, the men in the lake and the trip to the banker. There is a lot of repetition too, which I don’t believe was necessary…sometimes with very similar phrasing.
However, the second half of the book is filled with the danger of the trials, and the chemistry between the characters which really picked the story up. Then there’s that cliffhanger, and not knowing where Thorian is, or what part Talon is going to play. There’s also the question of what will happen when Nyx finally lets her power out to play.
The multi POV is always a plus for me, I lie getting to see things from the perspective often al the main characters.
So although I have given this one an average review, I am looking forward to the next in the series.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love LCA books and the first part of this one was a bit slower. I stuck it out and was happy I did because the action once things get going is quite the page turner and I struggled to put the book down. Nyx is the strong eldest sister trying to keep everything together as her world falls apart so when her sister is taken to be the courted prize in a trial the gods put on for basically their entertainment she must save her. The thing is that Nyx has a secret one that she keeps from everyone even a bit from us dear readers, I'm sure we will learn about it more and more in the next 2 books. We do get to meet her men. Thorian is a grumpy demigod who sees more than she would like. Fenric the strong berserker who seems to enjoy poking Thorian's buttons. We see Talon, a vampire, that I'm sure we will get to know more about in the next book. The cliff hanger on this book is so good that I'm not even upset about it absolutely can't wait for book 2.
Lacey is always an instant read for me, and this book was a quick, enjoyable start to a new series, and in typical fashion, left on a major cliffhanger. We are introduced to Nyx, a noble lady who is holding on by a thread to keep their property running and food for her sister and those living on their land fed after being cursed by a god. After her sister is taken as this year's bride prize in the trials, Nyx joins in hopes of saving her. We are introduced to the men I am 99% sure will be her harem, and everyone's pasts are shrouded in secrecy. As I mentioned, this is an easy read that flows quickly and keeps you engaged the more you read. No spice, as that typically picks up more in the second and third books. (I don't know how many this series will have; they are typically 3 books...), and the good news is Lacy is a fast writer and shouldn't be waiting too long for the next in the series.
LCA really knows how to suck me into a series. I picked this up planning to read a few chapters and suddenly it was 2 a.m. and I was emotionally attached to everyone.
Nyx is such an easy heroine to root for. She throws herself into the trials for her sister even though she has absolutely no business being there, and I loved that she doesn't magically become unbeatable overnight. She struggles, she learns, and every little win feels earned.
Thorian had me SO curious from the start. He's all mysterious, protective, and impossible to figure out. Then Fenric shows up and immediately won me over. He's basically a giant cinnamon roll in the middle of complete chaos. And Talon? I don't know what his deal is yet, but I already need more of him.
The trials are stressful in the best way. Every challenge had me wondering who was actually going to survive, and the slow burn is already simmering. Then LCA had the audacity to end it like THAT. Absolutely rude. I need book two immediately.
Desparate to save her sister.... I love the strong female leads that the author writes. Nyx, in this story, fits the bill. The world has fallen on her shoulders and she's been taking the burden on unassisted. After her sister is taken away, she vows to do everything she can, so now she finds herself entered into a competition to win her sister back. It's a team competition, and her partner just happens to be a demi-god. He's been through the trials before and failed and lost partners 6 times now, which is a surpise to Nyx. They all know she's not trained for this, and they're coming for her as easy pickings. What no one knows, is Nyx isn't quite human, but what she is, we just don't quite know. Very exciting book one with a cliffhanger at the end. Ready to see where book 2 picks up.
On Broken Bonds is an engaging start to a reverse harem romantasy filled with deadly trials, slow-burn romance, and plenty of intrigue! Nyx is an easy heroine to root for. Her determination to save her sister, despite having no combat experience, makes her courage stand out from the very beginning. Rather than relying on strength alone, she survives through resilience, heart, and an unwillingness to give up. The trials kept the story moving, while the growing relationships added just the right amount of tension. Thorian and Fenric each bring something different to the story, and I'm looking forward to seeing how those bonds continue to develop as the series progresses. The ending definitely leaves you wanting the next book, making this a solid beginning for readers who enjoy slow-burn reverse harem romances with high stakes, compelling characters, and a touch of mystery.
This book is a solid start to a new reverse harem fantasy series. Nyx is a great FMC —she enters a deadly competition she isn't trained for just to save her sister. She isn't any seasoned warrior, but her determination and bravery make her easy to root for. I also enjoyed the dynamic between the characters and the characters themselves - Thorian, the cold, grumpy partner with lots of mystery surrounding him; and then there is Fenric, the sweet, strong protector who brings great energy and lighthearted humor to the table. Their bond feels earned as they survive each challenge together, and the slow-burn tension nicely adds to the story, as I am not such a huge fan of insta-love. If you love deadly trial tropes, forced proximity, and protective heroes, this is definitely worth picking up.
WoW!!! Hard to believe that this was the beginning of a new series by Lacey. I was hooked from the beginning. Sometimes when starting a new series it takes a bit to get hooked on the storyline. Not with On Broken Bonds.
The word building is top notch. As always with a Lacey read, there is action, some romance, and of course an enemy that is so good in that role. Of course main characters that you grow to root for early on.
Nyx is such a great character. She is a noble woman who just wants to save her sister, to do so she enters the gods deadly games. There she meets three men. What I really like about her too is that she is not just perfect. She messes up, moves on and improves realistically.
This is a great start to this series, which is on its way to being my favorite one of hers so far.
What a great start to a new series! Lacey Carter Anderson sure has a way of pulling you into her stories and won’t let you out til it’s finished. Unfortunately, this one ends on a heck of a cliffhanger!! But’s very well written road to that cliffhanger. I just wanted to keep reading but life kept getting in my way. Therefore stretching out the action, Gods, magic, slow burn, and excitement of this book. Lady Nyx has joined the Trials to save her sick sister. Lyra was chosen by the Gods to be the prize awarded to the winner of the Trials. Nyx is determined to win! She has to be part of a team to enter.. in walks Thorian. The Trials are the Gods entertainment and a magical take on Hunger Games. This is where the magical action begins.
"On Broken Bonds" by Lacey Carter Andersen is an exceptional start to the Shield Of The Gods series! The world-building is incredibly immersive, creating a vivid and captivating fantasy realm that draws you in from the very first page. The "why choose" fantasy romance element adds a fresh and engaging twist, making the characters' choices all the more compelling. The story's pacing is spot-on, with just the right balance of action, emotion, and intrigue. And that cliffhanger? Absolutely heart-stopping—it's impossible not to be on the edge of your seat, eagerly awaiting the next installment. This book sets up the series beautifully, promising even more excitement and depth to come. A definite 5-star read for fans of fantasy romance!
Lacey has brought us into a new world with all sorts of supernaturals. This book dropped us right into the thick of the story from page one. Nyx just wants to keep her sister safe, keep her family home running and take care of her family. Instead she is now entering a deadly set of trials to win her sister back after she’s been taken by the same God her cursed her family. As always Lacey did such a fabulous job building this crazy world up. Her characters are so realistic, even tho we have shifters, vampires, warlocks, berserkers, gods, demi gods & humans. I loved how quickly things were moving in this story so much that I didn’t even realize I was at the end until there were no more pages to turn. Now I’m counting down til the next one!
This is a great start to a new romantasy series. Nyx volunteers for a deadly trial to try and save her sister. Along the way she collects various team mates along the way.
Nyx's motive is one of pure desperation, while that of the others in the trial may be less so. The men that she collects - a demi-god, a vampire and a berserker - are an interesting mix of personalities and motivations. The way the men bond with each other is also fun to see.
The trials the are facing are vicious, putting them, quite at the whims of the gods - as well as against the other teams, requiring more than just brute force.
I enjoyed this, the world is fascinating and I'm looking forward to seeing how Nyx and her men get on.
