Boo!

description

The story stays strong in issue #2.
Dinah feels the need to uncover the truth behind the Green Arrow serial killer, not just because she's being compelled by Hammond to save her father, but also because she feels like it's the right thing to do for her old lover and friend.
With Merlin's help, she finds Ollie's old apprentice, Mia Deardon, and tries to get answers.

description

This leads her to track down the love child Queen abandoned, Connor, and try to keep him out of harm's way.

description

For every answer, there seems to be another question.
This next issue is probably my most anticipated out of all the Absolute titles.
And that's saying something because I'm really enjoying pretty much everything from this new line.

Highly Recommended.

Absolute Green Arrow #2 was phenomenal. Two issues in, and this has quickly become one of my favorite books in the Absolute line.

What I’m loving most is how confidently it leans into being a horror comic, a murder mystery, and a Green Arrow story all at the same time. The mystery surrounding the Longbow Killer keeps getting deeper, and every new clue just raises more questions. I was completely hooked from the first page to the last. Dinah continues to be a fantastic lead, and watching her investigate the growing list of suspects gives the story a real detective-thriller feel.

The atmosphere is outstanding. This book feels dark, tense, and genuinely unsettling in a way that most superhero comics never attempt. There’s a real horror edge running through every scene, and the Robin Hood-inspired themes of hunting corrupt elites add even more weight to the story.

Rafael Albuquerque’s artwork is absolutely incredible. Every page drips with mood and intensity. The action hits hard, the horror elements are creepy as hell, and the visual storytelling keeps the tension cranked up the entire time.

This issue gave me everything I want from a comic: mystery, horror, action, great character work, and jaw-dropping art. The twists kept me guessing, the atmosphere never let up, and by the end I immediately wanted the next issue.

Easy 5 stars.

Dinah is torn between hunting a serial killer who is taking out evil billionaires, and working for said evil billionaires to hunt down said serial killer. This leads to a dream about her helping the killer: In her dream, the killer is revealed to be Oliver Queen, who is supposedly dead.

Hammond sends Dinah to interrogate their lead suspects for who the killer could be, I.e Ollie’s friends, millionaire Roy Harper, who's currently out of town, and programmer/kick boxer Mia Dearden who helped build the Green Arrow app after Ollie noticed her coding skills, but left after finding out that Ollie’s partner, Jubal, was a child predator.

Mia reveals that Ollie had a secret kid named Conor Hawke, he had abandoned, and that she had been helping him make sure the kid was set up in case anything happened to him. Since Ollie had told Dinah about the boy before, she finds and tails him to an abandoned mansion(how fitting). The kid spouts some shit about how Ollie reached out to him, worried for his safety and inheritance.

Conor name-drops the infamous DC Miraclo drug, then Dinah hears a scream and enters the next room to find the mansion's new owner hanging from the roof full of arrows. The Green Arrow Killer shows up and the boy starts shooting at him thinking he killed his dad, but the killer just uses a badass ricochet poison arrow move to kill the kid, telling Dinah that she’d approve if she knew what Hammond was planning. Later, Dinah finds out that Roy Harper is back in the city digging up Ollie’s grave.

Another really good issue with great artwork (especially the puzzle pieces page) and an interesting story that’s escalating well. These interpretations of the characters are interesting, and there was something I didn’t see coming at all. Overall, I’m enjoying this!

Great tone and plot progression in this one. Dinah is in the thick of it and having to make several difficult choices. I already wish this was more than six issues.

WHAT IN THE WHAT?! I may be gaslighting myself but I am holding out that this series is purposely running us for a loop, I’m expecting scone scooby doo level revelations here with a ton of hijinks by the end of this, lol, because no way Connor is introduced and truly dies just like that. I’m not going to believe it until I see his body in the ground…especially as it seems like a lot of that disbelief is going around. We jump into this issue to find Dinah suffering from nightmares, I meant who wouldn’t after breaking into your Ex’s secret doomsday bunker and finding a dead child with eyes growing out of him with 0 explanation as to why. She ends up having a dream so vivid that her nosebleeds come back, and with everything happening around her it’s clear that Ollie became a man she didn’t know at all. So how else can she continue other than working for Hammond, that monster she hates, so she can continue to remain close to this case. I continue to love the social media and public perspective angle this book presents and I hope it keeps up as it’s barely fiction with how it reflects real life, and it’s also interesting to see how people have immediately started to use the green arrow logo to graffiti buildings to suggest new targets.

Hammond ended up outfitting Dinah and Malcom Merlyn with prototype uniforms that are small arms and arrow proof as they continue to follow the leads on the top suspects. Ollie’s millionaire friend, Roy Harper, hasn’t been in the country for months, so the two of them decide to move on to Mia Dearden who they find pulverizing someone in the ring. She has already talked to the cops but Dinah has found some inconsistencies in her statements, but the only way Mia will talk to them is if one of them gets in the ring…Dinah of course obliges. Mia’s story takes us back 6 years ago when she was in high school and used to yell I to the void online, even trashing GreenArrows in the early days, but Ollie took notice of her legit programming skill and took her out of the foster homes to find a real family. But Mia was the first to see how much if a monster Jubal Slade was, even Ollie admitted he could see his friend slinking away to terrible people who give him attention as Ollie is the big businessman who gets all the credit for Slade’s product…but he also refused to ditch Slade or give up on him as Ollie could never give up on the underdog. Mia quit and the company was fine even with the update she was working on being delayed. But if they are going by her story the last time she saw Ollie was 6 years ago…when phone logs have the two of them speaking regularly for months leading up to his death. Mia doesn’t have an answer for this, but points out that while billionaire wealth has increased over 88 percent in 4 years, homelessness has also doubled in that time. She isn’t a killer, but also sees that this Robin Hood killer may not be such a bad thing. Now while I don’t particularly agree with Dinah’s response to this, being that she points out all of the small things Mia does like reposting and boycotting companies, I understand Dinah’s frustration as she is actively working against the system she is apart of to try and really do something. She finally beats Mia to the ground, as she makes the point that there is a murderer out there and she knows Mia will loose sleep if she could have helped stop it…so Mia finally talks, she mentions that Ollie was worried about his son and wanted her help on making sure he was setup.

Ollie having children is news to Malcom, but Dinah already knew all about Connor Hawke as Ollie told her all about how his greatest regret was a sounding his son when he was too young to think about being a dad. Dinah used her off hours to track down Connor, using Hammond’s high tech and highly illegal surveillance tech, and tail him to an abandoned mansion. But as the two found each other inside, Dinah immediately disarming the revolver from Connor’s hand, it occurred to her that Mia was right and she could be doing a lot more…like looking out for the last thing Ollie tried to protect. With Connor disarmed and pinned against the wall, Dinah explained that Oliver talked about him being his greatest regret and that his final action was trying to protect Connor. Connor is confused but explains the first he heard from his dad was a video he sent him about being safe, now Connor has to collect his inheritance quietly to avoid danger. He is sick of all of this, he mentions that he doesn’t care what Miraclo is or why Mia is so obsessed with it. Connor has now thrown a lot at us without any explanation, Miraclo is the drug that Hourman famously uses and unfortunately right now we won’t get any explanation as the two hear a scream from the other room. Dinah orders Connor to stay behind as she runs to the stairwell, where she finds a body hanging from the ceiling riddled with arrows. Another arrow comes through as it slashes open the man’s neck and pours blood directly on Dinah’s eyes, blinding her. And of course standing right above her, in aura farming glory, is green arrow. With Dinah blinded, Connor runs in and begins to shoot at green arrow. A few shots land but the armor takes all of it as green arrow launches an arrow back, trick shots it around the room to go right through Connor’s shoulder. Dinah sees this with a tint of red because of the blood still on her eyes as she rushes to him and holds Connor as his skin begins to bubble and he falls victim to the poison. Green arrow claims that her friend tried to kill them and that if she truly knew what Hammond was planning she’d agree with all of this. The green arrow seemed to have no idea that was Oliver Queen’s son, and she has now failed to keep him safe. But if Hammond is as much of a monster as green arrow claims…then she is going to bring them both down. As the cops come and cart Connor away, Malcom calls Dinah to inform her that Roy was spotted in star city…digging up Oliver’s grave. While some of this issue is throwing me off, I am still completely enthralled with this mystery. I love the mention of Miraclo and can’t wait to see what happens with that, Mia is fantastic, and even though I saw him in the body bag I am going to continue smoking the copium that a lot of that wasn’t just stagecraft to throw off Dinah and lead her down the right track towards Hammond. But I swear if this ends up being a murder on the orient express thing where everyone is green arrow or something…just please don’t, lol.

While I thought this was an okay issue overall, I just didn't connect with it the same way I did with issue #1. At this point, I've accepted that this is essentially a Black Canary book featuring a Green Arrow supporting cast. I love Black Canary as a character, and I'm interested enough to keep following her story, but some of the writing simply is not landing for me.
There are moments in the dialogue that feel overly preachy, and I found myself rolling my eyes at several of them. The discussion about classism during the boxing and MMA scene felt less like natural character interaction and more like reading someone's social media feed. It never came across as compelling dialogue. The introduction of Connor Hawke also felt more like checking a box than a natural way to bring the character into the story.
Outside of those issues, the rest of the comic was perfectly fine. There is a genuinely interesting mystery surrounding the identity of the Green Arrow killer, and that aspect of the story has me intrigued. However, whenever the political commentary takes center stage, I find myself becoming disengaged. Green Arrow has always been a politically minded character, so that is nothing new. The problem is not the inclusion of politics but the execution. Rather than feeling nuanced or thoughtfully integrated into the story, many of these moments come across as the author's personal opinions being inserted directly into the narrative.
Because of that, I'm hesitant to recommend this issue. Those elements consistently pulled me out of the story and overshadowed parts that I otherwise enjoyed. The artwork is solid, and I especially like the green undertones throughout the book. From a stylistic standpoint, it is definitely worth a look.

I actually enjoyed this issue more than the debut. I like having Dinah as the POV character and unlike the recent Spawn comic having the title character as a shadowy/threatening presence works here in the sense Green Arrow feels menacing and mysterious.

I'm also appreciating how much character work Pornsak is delivering via the flashbacks/interviews. Olly is a complex person as are his associates.

It's still odd how the mystery in the book is sort of solved to the reader in that they don't seem as curious as to who Green Arrow is, more why he's killing the people he is.

The end of this issue definitely makes me question whether this is Olly and if he is why did he kill the character he did? Maybe he's not as noble as we think?
All of which makes for an engaging mystery.

The art is great. Arrow is menacing/horrifying but they also pack so much character into the fight between Dinah and Mia - you can feel the anger and frustration.

Who would have thought Zombie Green Arrow would actually work?

As an aside I still think Green Arrow is a swamp thing with Olly as a template. I'm even more convinced after reading a Reddit post by TheMightyMinarchx7 on Reddit. They came up with the idea 6 months ago which must have been as soon as the book was announced. They should be working as a superhero comics editor because their outline is genius.

Overall impression = 5/5
Writing = 4/5
Art = 5/5

Will I read the next issue? yes

Wait for the trade collection? personally I prefer my mystery comics as monthlies as long as each issue provides new information as to suspects/motivation.

Did I need to read previous issues/series? yes

Will I read previous issues already have

I liked the second issue a little more. It starts revealing more information and actually gives us some developments that I didn’t expect, especially everything involving Oliver Queen’s son and what eventually happens to him.
I also don’t mind Black Canary being the main POV character. The title says Absolute Green Arrow, but that doesn’t mean Oliver or the Longbow Killer needs to be on every single page. My problem is more that the Longbow Killer still doesn’t have enough presence.

At this point I was already hoping he would become much more important very soon. If you’re going to build the whole series around this mysterious version of Green Arrow, he needs to feel important even when we aren’t following him directly.

The brutality continues to be one of my favorite things about the series. Absolute Batman obviously has that as well, but for some reason I feel it even more here. Some of the violence feels a little more raw and uncomfortable, which fits the tone really well.

There are also some good reveals and explanations here, and a few moments genuinely surprised me.

Still not amazing, but definitely a step in the right direction.

Okay. This issue is insane. I'm genuinely getting nostalgic feelings I haven't been this excited for an Absolute title since Absolute Batman. But if I'm being honest, I have no idea what direction they're going with this.

The mystery of who this new Green Arrow is, what he is, what Oliver Queen was doing before he died, and how it's all connected to the people around him that mystery is honestly one of the most interesting parts of this whole series. I'm just trying to piece together what happened and how everything is interconnected, and that alone makes it compelling.

I thought I knew where this issue was going, but something happened towards the end that made me go okay, I did not see that coming. I genuinely have no idea where this is going. All I know is that it's heading in a very interesting direction.

Truth be told, I have so many questions.

By now we all know there is a tie-in to Absolute Black Canary. But, I wonder if this was the only approach that could've been taken. There's such a huge emphasis on Dinah's role here I got lost again trying to figure out who was who!I like that she and Merlyn have teamed up, it's only right, considering. But I know one this for certain, I want more of Arrow regardless of who he is or what side he's on.It's nice of Roy to make his appearance back on the scene but again whose side is he on?I'm left with more questions than ever. I truly hope I get some answers!

Out of all three Absolute titles I'm reading, Batman, The Flash and This one, Arrow is so far the 3rd best but that's only due to it being on the second issue. The tone is well paired with the others if not abit darker than flash's existential dread and Batman's Eldrich horror tones but it's not one to sleep on.

Very strong series in the absolute universe imo. This is quickly becoming one of my favourites (as of now still behind absolute wonder woman). The messaging is strong. The conflict feels real. The story feels extremely current. And the mystery is interesting. Very excited to read more of this series.

The second issue deals way more with its social and political themes regarding wealth inequality, and the morality of the wealthy. The violence is there, and it doesn’t hold back thankfully. But I’m really uncertain about the Green Arrow himself, and where he fits into all of this. Again, we’ll see as it goes.

This issue explores the systemic, structural maladies of wealth - what you become implicitly or explicitly implicated in at the upper echelons of capitalism. There’s no such thing as a benevolent billionaire, even Ollie! His poor Arrow family is not faring too well in the Absolute universe…

The second issue of this limited series is just as explosive, relevant and surprising as the first. It furthers the themes of money & power in a broken system, examining the no-win situation that good people find themselves in when powerful people do horrific things.

Mia Dearden is a strong addition, acting as the voice of reason as Ollie hesitates to take action in response to sexual allegations made against his business partner, Jubal Slade. As a former prositute and victim of childhood sexual abuse in the mainline DC universe, Mia is perfect for this role.

Sympathetically, Ollie struggles with how to respond to Slade. He feels guilty for the sole attention he received for their joint business venture, feeling partially responsible for Slade’s descent into isolation, extremity, and dangerousness, initially preventing Ollie from taking any serious action against him. This mirrors the dilemma that many people feel when someone close to them is exposed of doing horrible things. There is a feeling of pity & empathy for the accused and often a sense of guilt or responsibility for not preventing them from spiraling down this sinister path.

However well-meaning, this orientation towards the accused is actually quite harmful. It halts serious action, and perpetuates injustice when contrasted with the faceless characterization of the victims, who can be treated as secondary to the accused and met with doubt and scrutiny.

When people justifiably grow tired of this injustice, it can lead to radicalization and a belief that “the system” must be torn down before it can stop protecting the rich and powerful. The public support of people like the Longbow Killer is a logical outcome for people who long for justice to be served and have lost faith in the current system. The public support for Luigi Mangione is the real-life counterpart.

Given the choice between a system that prioritizes the security of the rich, regardless of their actions, and brutal vigilante execution, individuals are characterized as complicit with evil if they don’t pick a side. Ollie’s struggle to respond to Slade and Dinah’s dilemma working for Hammond are representative of this situation.

I did not expect the twist at the end. It pokes holes in the more predictable theories regarding the identity of the Longbow Killer, with the emergence of the real possibility that he may end up being a villain, or at least an anti-hero. On a symbolic level, his actions show the unpredictable danger that accompanies brutal vigilantes.

At the end of the first issue, the audience is made to root for the killer and see him as a brutal, yet necessary, enactment of justice. At the conclusion of this issue, it’s a lot less obvious that he solely administers justice. Innocent people can get caught in the crossfire, with no real accountability for the vigilante’s actions, since they operate outside of any system and are their own self-instated judge, jury and executioner.

I got much more out of this after reading it a second time. I have faith that the rest of this series is going to excite, surprise and continue to be relevant for our current socio-political landscape. I was glad to hear that the limited series was extended to twelve issues, I can’t get enough of it.
