✨ARC Book Review✨
Harper Dale took the second chance trope and knocked it out of the park!
This story follows Laurel and Calder, who used to date when they were younger. Things didn’t work out the way either of them wanted, and they both moved on. Laurel finds herself back in town after recently leaving her cheating husband. Old town, old flames! After seeing Calder, all those old emotions and desires came rushing right back.
I have never read a book that nailed the second chance trope quite like this one. The moments of remembering their past, reliving their intimacy, the longing and yearning, and the fear of experiencing that heartbreak again… it was legitimately top tier!
Laurel, girl… I felt for her. She moved back to town to rebuild her life after leaving a cheating man. Her ex is manipulative and vindictive, while still saying come home 💀 I swear he gave me whiplash. Add seeing your sexy ex in jeans and a cowboy hat on top of all that! She really had her plate full!
I felt so much for Calder. You could just tell that man loved her deeply. I understood why he wanted to protect his heart, but he couldn’t resist his attraction to Laurel. I thought their chemistry was off the charts. I really respected that he tried to protect himself. It’s so hard to open your heart again to someone you once thought was your forever.
This book’s ending hit me right in the gut. I seriously had all the feels. Calder’s POV really set the scene and made the ending even more emotional. I absolutely loved it! This is honestly at the top of my list for second chance romances.

Denim and Dust is a second chance romance where a single mom comes back to her hometown after ten years to start again and reunite with her young love.
This book was fun and spicy, but unfortunately not for me. On paper the plot and the tropes were perfect, but I didn’t enjoy the writing style, nor the way the story was structured. It got repetitive, and I believe there were many facts just thrown around that didn’t add anything to the story or that didn’t have an accurate link connecting them to the main plot, while at the same time having many aspects that I don’t think were properly explored.
This could still be the book for you if you enjoy:
-Second chance romance
-Small Town romance
-Starting again after a divorce (FMC)
-Single mom
-Spicy romance

Laurel returns to her hometown following a marital separation. She’s back after leaving 16 years prior, and she will have to face the consequences of her departure and her former lover, Calder, while navigating her new life circumstances.
I am actually really surprised at how much I underestimated this book early on. It started off a little repetitive for me with almost an overuse of certain phrases but especially “potty words” and after the first few chapters, I almost wanted to give up. I am not a quitter so I kept reading! I am so glad I did. I really grew to love all of the characters in this book. The small town community portrayed in this book was also just adorable, mostly, and it came across as very realistic to me as the reader. There’s a perfect amount of sweet, spicy and a whole lot of drama in this book!
The FMC, Laurel, changes drastically from when she’s introduced to the reader. She ends up relearning how to stand up for herself, voice what she wants and gains a new found confidence in herself.
The MMC, Calder, faced a lot of “off page” transformation and was presented to the reader that way. Even though most of his character growth is talked about by other characters in passing, the reader sees him lower his hardened walls and learn to trust, recognize what he wants and to stop pushing people away by being a better communicator. The MCs were relatable at times and I think they will be well received by readers.
I personally, hope to see a follow up to this book in the future as I’m left with questions and would love to see how the relationship between two other characters from the book play out.

I really enjoyed Denim and Dust. It kept me hooked, and I read it in one sitting.
This was my first second-chance romance, and I loved the dual POV. Laurel was a wonderful main character: an amazing mother, a loving daughter, and a woman who had sacrificed a lot without turning herself into a victim. I always love characters who can acknowledge their pain and still see the good in their lives.
Calder was the kind of man every woman and child deserves: loving, patient, protective, and completely devoted. Little Bowie was adorable, and the entire friendship group gave the story such a warm sense of community.
I also really appreciated that the book did not rely on unnecessary drama or obvious clichés. Sometimes relationships simply change, people grow apart, and life takes them somewhere else.
I definitely need more of Tanner and Mercy because their dynamic is far too interesting to leave unexplored.
A comforting, emotional romance with real friendship, very little unnecessary drama, and enough spice to require reading with the door closed.

The second chance portion of this book was so heartbreaking. We get the full story in little doses and until the whole picture is revealed it feels just like a new mini burn whenever we get a new crumb.
Laurel comes home after leaving her cheating husband, bringing her adorable little boy Bowie. Laurel (and her parents) seem keen to try and keep Laurel away from running into Calder, her first love. The chemistry and unresolved feelings between these two were so good, and I loved that this was dual POV and we got to see them both trying to work through the hurt and residual feelings coming to the surface.
Calder is easy to swoon after. He’s spent years closing off his heart, and watching those walls slowly come down was everything. I just wish we’d gotten to experience more of what shaped him instead of having so much of his past and growth told to us. I wanted to understand him on a deeper level because present-day Calder was very easy to fall for.
The whole side plot between Tanner and Mercy also just hurt. I love how that situation was kind of called back a few times in a few different ways by a few different people in the book. Showing just how easy it is to fall into and no matter what it looks like, it hurts the same.
The firefighting storyline added another layer of tension that kept me anxious, although I’m still waiting to see how the turbine/windmills fire information connects to the bigger series story. There was a lot of setup that felt like it should matter later, so I’m curious where it goes.
And Bowie! The way Calder immediately connected with him absolutely melted my heart. Bowie automatically knowing Calder was someone he could trust was just the sweetest thing. Also, I love that his name is Bowie because one of my cats is Bowie too, and he’s equally amazing.
I did get frustrated with Laurel toward the end when it looked like she might actually return to her ex. My blood was BOILING. Thankfully, I loved how she finally stood up for herself and refused to let Calder walk away without making him talk to her.
There were definitely pieces I wanted more from, but ultimately there was more I loved than liked. The ending hit me right in the feels, and I’m definitely curious to see what comes next in this series.

Denim and Dust was such an emotional second chance romance. Harper Dale did a wonderful job bringing Laurel and Calder’s story to life, and I found myself invested in them from the very beginning.
The chemistry between these two never faded, even after ten years apart, and I loved watching them navigate all the hurt, longing, and unresolved feelings that had built up over the years. Calder completely stole my heart. Beneath his tough exterior was a man carrying so much pain, and seeing Laurel slowly break down those walls made for a beautiful love story.
The small town Texas setting added so much charm and atmosphere to the story. While there were a few moments that felt a little slower than I would have liked, the emotional payoff made it worth the journey.
Overall, this was a heartfelt, swoony second-chance romance with plenty of emotion, great chemistry, and characters you’ll find yourself rooting for. A solid 4 star read that fans of small town romance will definitely enjoy.

Oh, the angst of a second chance romance! Calder and Laurel have explosive chemistry! There was so much back and forth and remembering, definitely was swoon worthy. I loved Bowie - he had so much flair and comedy relief into the story. I do wish these two would have talked more, I think a lot of their issues could have been worked out with that.

Laurel returns home with her 3-year son Bowie (he's adorable) to the small town where she grew up and fell in love. It's been 10 years since she left her high school sweetheart, Calder who was devastated by her decison and departure to attend Rice University.
Laurel's putting down roots and getting rid of her three-time cheating husband. She's nervous because she knows Calder still lives in town and she wants to avoid coming face to face with him as long as possible.You already know.
I loved the dual point of views and the anguish and pain of the past was real as was the feel of what it might be like to live in a small town. When her father is taken ill, her best friend Mercy calls Calder and his best friend Tanner. They all come to the hospital for support and Calder ends up meeting and holding Bowie.
Meanwhile, her husband wants her to come back home but she's done. There is other woman drama that shouldn't have been a factor since what they had was brief and several years prior. I really respected Calder for letting Laurel know that he hadn't been celibate for 10 years! However, please tell me what prevented Laurel from returning home after college and reclaiming Calder, unless I missed it, nothing that I could see.
Finally, there is a moment where it got real with her husband and he basically says there was always a ghost in our marriage. I felt bad for him (because he was right and it's a sign of a good author) which again doesn't expalin why she didn't return to reclaim Calder because her best friend was surely giving her the 411 on him!

Ultimately, this was too long and repetitive for me, but I still found the story enjoyable overall.
Denim and Dust follows Laurel, who left her hometown (and Calder), married an idiot, and had a very cute son. After catching her husband cheating for the third time, she's finally had enough. She leaves him, takes her son, and heads back to Texas.
There, we meet Calder, who's never really recovered from Laurel leaving. Unsure why she's back or what she wants, he tries to keep his distance... but not for long.
My biggest issue was how repetitive the relationship felt. The entire book is built around the "will they, won't they" between Laurel and Calder, but we already know they will. Instead, it becomes Laurel worrying Calder is with another woman, Calder worrying Laurel is going to leave again, and the same conversations happening over and over. I understand they both have trauma surrounding their relationship, but how many times can Laurel say, "I'm here to stay"?
Everyone in this book is also incredibly dramatic. You're telling me, someone is ready to move away because another woman hugged the guy she's interested in after he didn't die in a fire? It all felt so overblown.
I also wish Grant, Laurel's ex-husband, had been more of an actual villain. The private investigator storyline was interesting, but after a few bombshell revelations, it just kind of fizzled out.
Bowie, however, was adorable and easily one of the highlights of the book. He was the perfect break from all the heavy relationship drama, and his role as the swear police had me smiling more than once. His relationship with Calder was especially sweet.
Ironically, I found myself more invested in Mercy and Tanner than Laurel and Calder, which is... not exactly a great sign for the main couple. I'll definitely be reading their book, even though this one wasn't a favorite.
I also thought the romance itself was well written. The intimate scenes felt natural and were placed in ways that actually contributed to Laurel and Calder's relationship rather than interrupting it.
What didn't work for me was the underlying trope of ruining your life to impress your father. It is so overused at this point, it didn't resonate with me.
I also really struggled with the amount of gendered language throughout the book. Particularly with women cooking, women not knowing about welding, Bowie needing "boy toys" and "man time," Laurel's guilt around having to work and a few others where we compare men lifting heavy things to women and dishtowels... it all felt incredibly dated and distracting.
Despite my frustrations with the repetitive conflict and the outdated attitudes woven throughout, I still had a good time with this one. The romance had its moments, Bowie completely stole the show, and I'm interested enough in Mercy and Tanner to pick up the next book. Definitely not a new favorite, but I don't regret reading it.

Bowie, however, was adorable and easily one of the highlights of the book. He was the perfect break from all the heavy relationship drama, and his role as the swear police had me smiling more than once. His relationship with Calder was especially sweet.
Ironically, I found myself more invested in Mercy and Tanner than Laurel and Calder, which is... not exactly a great sign for the main couple. I'll definitely be reading their book, even though this one wasn't a favorite.
I also thought the romance itself was well written. The intimate scenes felt natural and were placed in ways that actually contributed to Laurel and Calder's relationship rather than interrupting it.
What didn't work for me was the underlying trope of ruining your life to impress your father. It is so overused at this point, it didn't resonate with me.
I also really struggled with the amount of gendered language throughout the book. Particularly with women cooking, women not knowing about welding, Bowie needing "boy toys" and "man time," Laurel's guilt around having to work and a few others where we compare men lifting heavy things to women and dishtowels... it all felt incredibly dated and distracting.
Despite my frustrations with the repetitive conflict and the outdated attitudes woven throughout, I still had a good time with this one. The romance had its moments, Bowie completely stole the show, and I'm interested enough in Mercy and Tanner to pick up the next book. Definitely not a new favorite, but I don't regret reading it.

Laurel is moving back to her hometown after being away for 10 years with her young son after she caught her husband in a compromising position with another woman. And she left Texas years ago; she didn’t just leave her family, he left her first love Calder. Now that she’s back in town, she must face him again but he’s bitter and angry after she left all those years ago. Now that she’s here to stay, can he move on from the past and can they be friends or are they always destined to be more?
I was really hoping that the first confrontation between them had some more anticipation and sparks. The buildup was good, but then it just kind of fell flat. I wanted some banter and to feel the regret, longing and hurt and even their subsequent encounters didn’t pack the punch I wanted them to.
The story was flowing along nicely and I thought the drama with her ex was done well but then there seemed to be some other things just thrown in there for extra drama:
Darla, who worked for him at the front desk and halfway through the story she was jealous and spiteful ex
Calder was a business owner, volunteer fire fighter and town welder. I know why we needed these things in the story but another character could have been added to ease some of the load. No way this person can do it all and have time to rebuild the fragile relationship with Laurel.
Her dad was supposed to be this mean old angry man and he seemed pretty reasonable to me. I would have liked more tension between the father daughter, specially if he was so against Calder when they were younger.
A little nitpicky, but I think instead of them remembering the past in flashbacks, there could’ve been a some chapters of them going back into the past so you could really see firsthand one their attraction to each other to the pressures that they were under, especially her for her father and three the part where they each let each other go.
Overall, it’s a good story about coming home and facing your mistakes and trying to move on and grow and I think the author established that, but I wish some of the dialogue would’ve been a little more crisp and the story had a little better flow.
I did find little Bowie so cute and adorable, and he does steal your heart in this book!

One of my favorite parts of this story was the characters. Calder was such a compelling love interest—steady, caring, and willing to show up for the people he loves. He had a quiet strength that made him easy to root for, and I really enjoyed watching his layers unfold throughout the story.
Laurel was equally easy to connect with. She felt authentic, and I appreciated seeing her navigate both the difficult and hopeful moments of her journey. Her growth felt natural, and I found myself wanting the best for her every step of the way.
And then there's Bowie, who completely stole so many scenes. He brought so much warmth, heart, and personality to the story, and every time he appeared, I couldn't help but smile. He added a special charm that made the emotional moments feel even more meaningful.
The small-town setting was cozy and inviting, and the relationships—both romantic and familial—gave the story its emotional depth. I especially enjoyed the quieter moments where the characters simply got to be themselves.

This was exactly the palate cleanser I needed! If you're looking for a heartfelt, easy to read cowboy romance, definitely add this one to your TBR. It has cowboys, volunteer firefighters, second chance romance, childhood sweethearts, a single mom, and the perfect small town setting. It completely pulled me in from the very first chapter.
Calder and Laurel were absolutely perfect together. You could feel years of love, hurt, and unresolved emotions between them, which made every interaction so emotional. Their chemistry and tension were incredible, and while this isn't a super spicy romance, I honestly didn't miss it because the emotional connection carried the story so well.
I also have to mention Bowie. Without giving anything away, the meaning behind his name absolutely melted my heart.
I usually enjoy dual timelines in second chance romances, but I actually liked that this story stayed in the present. It let the history between Calder and Laurel unfold naturally through their conversations and memories instead of constantly jumping back and forth.
My only complaint is the ending. Once the conflict was resolved, the story wrapped up almost immediately before jumping to the epilogue. I would have loved another chapter or two just to spend more time with these characters because I wasn't ready to leave them. Honestly, I would have happily read another hundred pages.
This was my first Harper Dale book, and it definitely won't be my last. I'll absolutely be checking out more of her books and I may even need a physical copy of this one for my shelves. Now can we please get Tanner and Mercy's story as soon as possible? I already need it.

The characters were well written and strong. I liked the strong family and friendship bonds.
If the reader likes small town settings, Texas cowboys and a second chance romance with strong family and friendship bonds I would say go get this book and read it.
I liked the premise and the plot. I liked the emotions in the story.
The characters felt real like I could really live next door and be friends with them.

I really wanted to love Dust and Denim. I enjoy second-chance romances, and I liked the cute small-town setting and strong sense of community, especially seeing people come together to support one another.
I did think Laurel and Calder had great chemistry, but the story felt like it was trying to do too much, and with the length of the book, some of the plotlines began to feel overwhelming. So much happened so quickly that I often found myself frustrated with their relationship. I kept wishing they would simply communicate instead of letting misunderstandings and assumptions build. Unfortunately, I struggled to connect with them as much as I had hoped.
I also had difficulty understanding some of the characters' motivations, particularly Grant, Laurel's soon-to-be ex-husband. Some of the family revelations and backstory didn't quite work for me, and I found some of the profanity around a three-year-old unnecessary and distracting.

While I do think there was a lost of rush within this story, the pace seeming to blur from over 10 years of silence into an instant reconnection, it was still a decent read. Laurel and Calder's long-time comin', second chance romance is something I still ate up.
Laurel leaves her cheating husband, taking their son Bowie, and heading back to her hometown. Back to where she left the love of her life before college. While I thought there would be WAY MORE GROVELING on her part, a freak accident in her life brings Calder running back to make sure she's okay and that resizzles the feelings Calder tried to bury.
Drama surrounds them, of course (I mean what self respecting small town romance doesn't come with that?), but they navigate it well together after about the 35%/40% mark. There's spice, there's friends like Mercy and Tanner and a whole crew of locals that really add to the story that made it better for me.
As a whole, this story feels like it's missing a key piece, and I don't know what it is....pacing? A plot connection strung together? Depth? Timing is off to make the story believable and smooth: Laurel left at 18, worked to put her husband through law school (teaching), stopped teaching when she had her son, and her husband is a partner in a big time Nashville law firm. How does that all happen from age 18-28?
It wasn't enough to stop me from reading, but it did annoy the part of my brain that likes a consistent, plausible timeline of events.

I enjoyed this book, I liked the story of 2nd chance romance. I do have to admit there was a bit of repetition in the story. The FMC left her husband after she found out he cheated on her.. She went back to her parents house with her 3 year old son. Her besties from high school rally around her and part of that bestie crew is the MMC. He was heartbroken she the FMC left for college. Then a lot happened in those 10 years she was gone. The MMC sees her and he is still in love with her. He never moved on and made something out of himself. The FMCs dad never liked him. Once she is back in town and she comes face to face with him, she tells him she is there to stay and she aint leaving. The MMC is skeptical, he doesn't want to get hurt again.. The FMCs ex comes to town to grovel for her and their son to go back to Nashville with him. The are caught in a fire and the MMC goes in there to save her and her son. The FMC is in shock and her ex takes the opportunity to hold her and their son which breaks the MMCs heart. She finally knocks some sense into her ex that she isn't going back with him and she wants the divorce and then goes looking for the MMC to win him back. I loved how the MMC accepted and loved her son as if his own. Then the best crew all got car seats to drive the baby around if they needed to, that I thought was very sweet and thoughtful. Over all great story with plot just would have been a lot better if things weren't repetitive throughout the stor
I enjoyed this book, I liked the story of 2nd chance romance. I do have to admit there was a bit of repetition in the story. The FMC left her husband after she found out he cheated on her.. She went back to her parents house with her 3 year old son. Her besties from high school rally around her and part of that bestie crew is the MMC. He was heartbroken she the FMC left for college. Then a lot happened in those 10 years she was gone. The MMC sees her and he is still in love with her. He never moved on and made something out of himself. The FMCs dad never liked him. Once she is back in town and she comes face to face with him, she tells him she is there to stay and she aint leaving. The MMC is skeptical, he doesn't want to get hurt again.. The FMCs ex comes to town to grovel for her and their son to go back to Nashville with him. The are caught in a fire and the MMC goes in there to save her and her son. The FMC is in shock and her ex takes the opportunity to hold her and their son which breaks the MMCs heart. Laurel felt so familiar to me, I felt so connected to her plight as it mirrored my mom's and what we had to go through for years. The sting of having to return home with a child and feeling less than after your marriage has been damaged by the man who swore to love and respect the union. The extra marital affairs destroyed her marriage, her self esteem, and stole her life. Coming back 16 years later with a son was not what she wanted , especiially since it also meant having to deal with reliving all the sentiments she left with Calder.
For Calder seeing Laurel back in town is bittersweet because the love they shared has not died, but went to the backburner and he is not ready to revisit them as he does not want the pain. Seeing the woman who owns his heart, connecting with her son, and slowly helping to build her back up made me love Calder. You feel his struggle, yet see the determination to protect along with it. Having glimpses of their past and how they came together was essential to understanding their places now.
Unfortunately, and thankfully the book also highlights Laurel's struggles with her marriage as her ex comes back into the story, And I totally understand how a women psych tells us is wrong, but having seen this play in real life, I have to say that I relate to the struggle, and it is painful to recognize it after,

i'm such a sucker for a second chance romance and this one had me rooting for Laurel and Calder. there is just something about two people finding their way back to each other after years apart that always gets me. Calder being a firefighter definitely did not hurt either because protective MMCs will forever be my weakness. he was steady dependable and so obviously still not over Laurel while she was trying to navigate everything life had thrown at her.

I was originally captivated and hooked by this book. I read the first 40% in 1 day. I enjoyed the scenery, the imagery, Laurel and her start to a new beginning with her son, her running into her old flame, learning the town ropes, all of the tension between them and the other friends and family. It was great! Then things became a bit mundane, and there was too much time spent on minute details that it had me skimming through a good portion of the second half of the book. We were climbing, climbing, climbing, and then it just plateaued.
The tension with the second chance romance and the heat of the characters was really there and held you on the edge of your seat for a while and then all of a sudden the tension breaks in kind of a sudden way and the chemistry fades.
The divorce plot point flowed in an odd and unrealistic way. It felt like a lot of filler material to keep the story moving towards a tense miscommunication that was unnecessary.
I wish we got more back story and more flashbacks of them when they were together in high school and leading up to them breaking apart. We only get one scene of them breaking up. There is no build of the relationship between them for us. It’s just angst and second hand information from other characters. Learning about the characters and their history by experiencing it with them, would have helped me to feel emotionally tied to their story.

I don't even know where to begin with Denim and Dust by Harper Dale.
This story was absolutely beautiful from beginning to end. It reminded me why I love contemporary western romances so much. It wasn't just about finding love again—it was about coming home, healing, forgiveness, and finding the people who make you feel like you belong.
Laurel and Calder completely stole my heart. Their second chance felt authentic, emotional, and full of years of love that never really disappeared. I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning.
I also have to mention the side characters because they made this world feel so alive. Tanner and Mercy had me smiling every time they were on the page, and now I'm crossing my fingers that one day we'll get to read their story too. 🤎

She hadn't seen him since they parted ways ten years ago. As these two must now have to coexist in the same town, old feelings emerge along with old hurts. Calder wonders if he can ever trust Laurel again and she wonders if Calder will give her another chance.
My favorite parts of the book were Bowie and his interactions with his grandparents, Calder, Uncle Tanner, and Mercy. He’s such a cute kid and was the comic relief at times. I also loved Mercy and Tanner. They had something going on in the background and they hooked me. There’s something about those two that I would love to see more of. I also liked Laurel’s journey of starting over again and fighting for her happiness. I think her and Calder were meant to be and I liked their journey back to each other. I liked the tension built from them trying to navigate their new normal of being in the same town again.
I did feel the story drag a little towards the end before everything came together nicely. However, I was still locked into the story and was rooting for Laurel and Calder to come together. Overall, I’d recommend this book to readers who love a second chance, small-town romance.

Okay, listen. I was kinda hoping for cowboys. 🤠😂 But I mean, we got little Bowie, so I guess that counts for something!
In Denim and Dust, we follow Laurel Prescott as she returns to Ladera, Texas, and let me tell you, this woman has A LOT going on. Especially when it comes to her absolutely useless husband. I have no kind words for this man, so let's just leave it at that. 🙄
Coming back home isn't exactly easy for Laurel, and even with all the stress and everything she's dealing with, she somehow finds her way back into life in Ladera. Watching her rise to the challenge, find her footing, and grow throughout the story was genuinely lovely. I really enjoyed seeing her development and getting little glimpses into what happened during those years she was away.
And then we have Laurel and Calder. THESE TWO. 😭❤️

This is just not that good and reads like a draft. I have DNFed at around 60%. I started it on a plane which was keeping me motivated to keep reading - but I have made it home and don't care anymore.
There isn't enough exposition to build out the scene of this story. Not enough was put in to the back story and the history, or devolping the characters for this to make me care.
Laurel decides she is divorcing her husband (yes, good choice) but immediately moves home with her son and starts dating the "one that got away".
Her father kind of forced them to not be together, but that conflict is never really addressed and apparently we are all just fine with it now. Although that conflict could have helped this story. The conflict now is just that Calder doesn't want to get hurt again, and stays away because he assumes she needs space while going through a divorce.....which is kind of good advice.
We also don't really see anything build between them - and they don't talk a lot to really understand their feelings...we as the reader are just told.
I stopped when her ex asks for a paternity test (because she named her son after the MMC) and she has a dream that made her believe that she maybe did cheat on her husband and her son could have been the MMC...
