Harper Dale took the second chance trope and knocked it out of the park!
This story follows Laurel and Calder, who used to date when they were younger. Things didn’t work out the way either of them wanted, and they both moved on. Laurel finds herself back in town after recently leaving her cheating husband. Old town, old flames! After seeing Calder, all those old emotions and desires came rushing right back.
I have never read a book that nailed the second chance trope quite like this one. The moments of remembering their past, reliving their intimacy, the longing and yearning, and the fear of experiencing that heartbreak again… it was legitimately top tier!
Laurel, girl… I felt for her. She moved back to town to rebuild her life after leaving a cheating man. Her ex is manipulative and vindictive, while still saying come home 💀 I swear he gave me whiplash. Add seeing your sexy ex in jeans and a cowboy hat on top of all that! She really had her plate full!
I felt so much for Calder. You could just tell that man loved her deeply. I understood why he wanted to protect his heart, but he couldn’t resist his attraction to Laurel. I thought their chemistry was off the charts. I really respected that he tried to protect himself. It’s so hard to open your heart again to someone you once thought was your forever.
This book’s ending hit me right in the gut. I seriously had all the feels. Calder’s POV really set the scene and made the ending even more emotional. I absolutely loved it! This is honestly at the top of my list for second chance romances.

Laurel returns to her hometown following a marital separation. She’s back after leaving 16 years prior, and she will have to face the consequences of her departure and her former lover, Calder, while navigating her new life circumstances.
I am actually really surprised at how much I underestimated this book early on. It started off a little repetitive for me with almost an overuse of certain phrases but especially “potty words” and after the first few chapters, I almost wanted to give up. I am not a quitter so I kept reading! I am so glad I did. I really grew to love all of the characters in this book. The small town community portrayed in this book was also just adorable, mostly, and it came across as very realistic to me as the reader. There’s a perfect amount of sweet, spicy and a whole lot of drama in this book!
The FMC, Laurel, changes drastically from when she’s introduced to the reader. She ends up relearning how to stand up for herself, voice what she wants and gains a new found confidence in herself.
The MMC, Calder, faced a lot of “off page” transformation and was presented to the reader that way. Even though most of his character growth is talked about by other characters in passing, the reader sees him lower his hardened walls and learn to trust, recognize what he wants and to stop pushing people away by being a better communicator. The MCs were relatable at times and I think they will be well received by readers.
I personally, hope to see a follow up to this book in the future as I’m left with questions and would love to see how the relationship between two other characters from the book play out.
This book was well written and has a special charm to it and I can see it being an adored romance novel. I loved it and I would definitely recommend this book!

This book was fun and spicy, but unfortunately not for me. On paper the plot and the tropes were perfect, but I didn’t enjoy the writing style, nor the way the story was structured. It got repetitive, and I believe there were many facts just thrown around that didn’t add anything to the story or that didn’t have an accurate link connecting them to the main plot, while at the same time having many aspects that I don’t think were properly explored.
This could still be the book for you if you enjoy:
-Second chance romance
-Small Town romance
-Starting again after a divorce (FMC)
-Single mom
-Spicy romance

Denim and Dust was such an emotional second chance romance. Harper Dale did a wonderful job bringing Laurel and Calder’s story to life, and I found myself invested in them from the very beginning.
The chemistry between these two never faded, even after ten years apart, and I loved watching them navigate all the hurt, longing, and unresolved feelings that had built up over the years. Calder completely stole my heart. Beneath his tough exterior was a man carrying so much pain, and seeing Laurel slowly break down those walls made for a beautiful love story.
The small town Texas setting added so much charm and atmosphere to the story. While there were a few moments that felt a little slower than I would have liked, the emotional payoff made it worth the journey.
Overall, this was a heartfelt, swoony second-chance romance with plenty of emotion, great chemistry, and characters you’ll find yourself rooting for. A solid 4 star read that fans of small town romance will definitely enjoy.

Ultimately, this was too long and repetitive for me, but I still found the story enjoyable overall.
Denim and Dust follows Laurel, who left her hometown (and Calder), married an idiot, and had a very cute son. After catching her husband cheating for the third time, she's finally had enough. She leaves him, takes her son, and heads back to Texas.
There, we meet Calder, who's never really recovered from Laurel leaving. Unsure why she's back or what she wants, he tries to keep his distance... but not for long.
My biggest issue was how repetitive the relationship felt. The entire book is built around the "will they, won't they" between Laurel and Calder, but we already know they will. Instead, it becomes Laurel worrying Calder is with another woman, Calder worrying Laurel is going to leave again, and the same conversations happening over and over. I understand they both have trauma surrounding their relationship, but how many times can Laurel say, "I'm here to stay"?
Everyone in this book is also incredibly dramatic. You're telling me, someone is ready to move away because another woman hugged the guy she's interested in after he didn't die in a fire? It all felt so overblown.
I also wish Grant, Laurel's ex-husband, had been more of an actual villain. The private investigator storyline was interesting, but after a few bombshell revelations, it just kind of fizzled out.
Bowie, however, was adorable and easily one of the highlights of the book. He was the perfect break from all the heavy relationship drama, and his role as the swear police had me smiling more than once. His relationship with Calder was especially sweet.
Ironically, I found myself more invested in Mercy and Tanner than Laurel and Calder, which is... not exactly a great sign for the main couple. I'll definitely be reading their book, even though this one wasn't a favorite.
I also thought the romance itself was well written. The intimate scenes felt natural and were placed in ways that actually contributed to Laurel and Calder's relationship rather than interrupting it.
What didn't work for me was the underlying trope of ruining your life to impress your father. It is so overused at this point, it didn't resonate with me.
I also really struggled with the amount of gendered language throughout the book. Particularly with women cooking, women not knowing about welding, Bowie needing "boy toys" and "man time," Laurel's guilt around having to work and a few others where we compare men lifting heavy things to women and dishtowels... it all felt incredibly dated and distracting.
Despite my frustrations with the repetitive conflict and the outdated attitudes woven throughout, I still had a good time with this one. The romance had its moments, Bowie completely stole the show, and I'm interested enough in Mercy and Tanner to pick up the next book. Definitely not a new favorite, but I don't regret reading it.

Denim and Dust is a heartfelt small-town romance that blends emotional healing, family, and finding where you belong. It was a comforting read with a cast of characters that kept me invested from beginning to end.
One of my favorite parts of this story was the characters. Calder was such a compelling love interest—steady, caring, and willing to show up for the people he loves. He had a quiet strength that made him easy to root for, and I really enjoyed watching his layers unfold throughout the story.
Laurel was equally easy to connect with. She felt authentic, and I appreciated seeing her navigate both the difficult and hopeful moments of her journey. Her growth felt natural, and I found myself wanting the best for her every step of the way.
And then there's Bowie, who completely stole so many scenes. He brought so much warmth, heart, and personality to the story, and every time he appeared, I couldn't help but smile. He added a special charm that made the emotional moments feel even more meaningful.
The small-town setting was cozy and inviting, and the relationships—both romantic and familial—gave the story its emotional depth. I especially enjoyed the quieter moments where the characters simply got to be themselves.
The reason this landed at 3.5 stars instead of higher is that the pacing felt a little uneven for me. There were sections that moved more slowly than I would have liked, and I wished a few emotional moments had been explored a bit more deeply. Because of that, I didn't always feel as connected to every part of the story as I wanted to.

This was exactly the palate cleanser I needed! If you're looking for a heartfelt, easy to read cowboy romance, definitely add this one to your TBR. It has cowboys, volunteer firefighters, second chance romance, childhood sweethearts, a single mom, and the perfect small town setting. It completely pulled me in from the very first chapter.
Calder and Laurel were absolutely perfect together. You could feel years of love, hurt, and unresolved emotions between them, which made every interaction so emotional. Their chemistry and tension were incredible, and while this isn't a super spicy romance, I honestly didn't miss it because the emotional connection carried the story so well.
I also have to mention Bowie. Without giving anything away, the meaning behind his name absolutely melted my heart.
I usually enjoy dual timelines in second chance romances, but I actually liked that this story stayed in the present. It let the history between Calder and Laurel unfold naturally through their conversations and memories instead of constantly jumping back and forth.
My only complaint is the ending. Once the conflict was resolved, the story wrapped up almost immediately before jumping to the epilogue. I would have loved another chapter or two just to spend more time with these characters because I wasn't ready to leave them. Honestly, I would have happily read another hundred pages.
This was my first Harper Dale book, and it definitely won't be my last. I'll absolutely be checking out more of her books and I may even need a physical copy of this one for my shelves. Now can we please get Tanner and Mercy's story as soon as possible? I already need it.

She left her husband and is moving back in with her parents.
Straightening her life out and getting a job and divorcing her husband while raising Bowie are her priorities. Calder is not.
Calder has changed too in those ten years. He went through some stuff (won't spoil) and his heart is frozen since Laurel left him.
The book is told in alternating chapters from Laurel and Calder's point of view. It also tells about now, the present and times past.
I liked Laurel and Calder, Loved Bowie. I also really liked Mercy and Tanner, they NEED their own book.
Since this book is first in a series they might get their book next.
I will say one thing for people who don't like cursing or swearing in a book. this book has lots of swearing.
The characters were well written and strong. I liked the strong family and friendship bonds.
If the reader likes small town settings, Texas cowboys and a second chance romance with strong family and friendship bonds I would say go get this book and read it.
I liked the premise and the plot. I liked the emotions in the story.
The characters felt real like I could really live next door and be friends with them.
A very strong good quick read.

Since I read this several months before publication, I hope these issues will be addressed during the final editing process.
I really wanted to love Dust and Denim. I enjoy second-chance romances, and I liked the cute small-town setting and strong sense of community, especially seeing people come together to support one another.
I did think Laurel and Calder had great chemistry, but the story felt like it was trying to do too much, and with the length of the book, some of the plotlines began to feel overwhelming. So much happened so quickly that I often found myself frustrated with their relationship. I kept wishing they would simply communicate instead of letting misunderstandings and assumptions build. Unfortunately, I struggled to connect with them as much as I had hoped.
I also had difficulty understanding some of the characters' motivations, particularly Grant, Laurel's soon-to-be ex-husband. Some of the family revelations and backstory didn't quite work for me, and I found some of the profanity around a three-year-old unnecessary and distracting.

While I do think there was a lost of rush within this story, the pace seeming to blur from over 10 years of silence into an instant reconnection, it was still a decent read. Laurel and Calder's long-time comin', second chance romance is something I still ate up.
Laurel leaves her cheating husband, taking their son Bowie, and heading back to her hometown. Back to where she left the love of her life before college. While I thought there would be WAY MORE GROVELING on her part, a freak accident in her life brings Calder running back to make sure she's okay and that resizzles the feelings Calder tried to bury.
Drama surrounds them, of course (I mean what self respecting small town romance doesn't come with that?), but they navigate it well together after about the 35%/40% mark. While I thought there would be WAY MORE GROVELING on her part, a freak accident in her life brings Calder running back to make sure she's okay and that resizzles the feelings Calder tried to bury.
Drama surrounds them, of course (I mean what self respecting small town romance doesn't come with that?), but they navigate it well together after about the 35%/40% mark. There's spice, there's friends like Mercy and Tanner and a whole crew of locals that really add to the story that made it better for me.

i'm such a sucker for a second chance romance and this one had me rooting for Laurel and Calder. there is just something about two people finding their way back to each other after years apart that always gets me. Calder being a firefighter definitely did not hurt either because protective MMCs will forever be my weakness. he was steady dependable and so obviously still not over Laurel while she was trying to navigate everything life had thrown at her.

I was originally captivated and hooked by this book. I read the first 40% in 1 day. I enjoyed the scenery, the imagery, Laurel and her start to a new beginning with her son, her running into her old flame, learning the town ropes, all of the tension between them and the other friends and family. It was great! Then things became a bit mundane, and there was too much time spent on minute details that it had me skimming through a good portion of the second half of the book. We were climbing, climbing, climbing, and then it just plateaued.
The tension with the second chance romance and the heat of the characters was really there and held you on the edge of your seat for a while and then all of a sudden the tension breaks in kind of a sudden way and the chemistry fades.
The divorce plot point flowed in an odd and unrealistic way. It felt like a lot of filler material to keep the story moving towards a tense miscommunication that was unnecessary.
I wish we got more back story and more flashbacks of them when they were together in high school and leading up to them breaking apart. We only get one scene of them breaking up. There is no build of the relationship between them for us. It’s just angst and second hand information from other characters. Learning about the characters and their history by experiencing it with them, would have helped me to feel emotionally tied to their story.

This story was absolutely beautiful from beginning to end. It reminded me why I love contemporary western romances so much. It wasn't just about finding love again—it was about coming home, healing, forgiveness, and finding the people who make you feel like you belong.
Laurel and Calder completely stole my heart. Their second chance felt authentic, emotional, and full of years of love that never really disappeared. I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning.
I also have to mention the side characters because they made this world feel so alive. Tanner and Mercy had me smiling every time they were on the page, and now I'm crossing my fingers that one day we'll get to read their story too. 🤎

I really enjoyed Denim and Dust. It kept me hooked, and I read it in one sitting.
This was my first second-chance romance, and I loved the dual POV. Laurel was a wonderful main character: an amazing mother, a loving daughter, and a woman who had sacrificed a lot without turning herself into a victim. I always love characters who can acknowledge their pain and still see the good in their lives.
Calder was the kind of man every woman and child deserves: loving, patient, protective, and completely devoted. Little Bowie was adorable, and the entire friendship group gave the story such a warm sense of community.
I also really appreciated that the book did not rely on unnecessary drama or obvious clichés. Sometimes relationships simply change, people grow apart, and life takes them somewhere else.
I definitely need more of Tanner and Mercy because their dynamic is far too interesting to leave unexplored.
My only issue was that Calder’s POV became repetitive in places, which is why this was four stars instead of five.

While there, she's also rekindling a spark with her high school sweetheart who'd been dedicated to her even after she left town for college. I think this fits the second-chance romance really well and in my eyes our MMC gets bonus points because not only is he a cowboy and business owner, but also a volunteer firefighter.
There were some phrases in this book I thought were strange but also end up normalizing the characters--specifically how frequently the author describes the characters, specifically our FMC's son, uses the bathroom? It was a detail that reminded me yeah, everyone's gotta do it, but is it really necessary to include? Besides that, there were times when the MMC would make comments about FMC's son that made my brows pinch. There was one spice scene which was alright, and let's all be adults; just say you're fucking! Each time the author had FMC/MMC use the term 'make love' I did cringe, but this is a personal preference lol. I'd recommend this to someone who wants to try a 'cowboy' romance!

I ended up really enjoying this, but I have to be honest… the main trope is just not for me.💔
Second chance after 16 years is always a tough sell, and there were definitely moments where I found myself rolling my eyes a bit at how intense everything still felt after all that time. These characters have lived whole lives in between, and that part didn’t fully land for me.
That said, there was so much here that did work. The small town Texas setting felt so immersive, and the family and found family dynamics were really strong. ✨ Laurel’s journey of figuring out who she is and what she wants, especially after her marriage and becoming a mom, was something I really connected with.
Calder being a firefighter added such a protective, grounded energy to the story, and I loved seeing him prove himself and step into something better for his life. And honestly, the side characters? So good. I’m already invested in what’s coming next.

Laurel never wanted to leave her small Texas hometown, and she knew she'd never really get over Calder, her first love, but she didn't feel as though she had any choice -- at the time. Ten years later, having put up with her husband's cheating for the last time, she leaves Nashville with Bowie, her young son, to return home and start her life over again. Inevitably, she and Calder can't avoid each other, and the sparks are definitely still there. Readers will root for Laurel and Calder from the beginning, and will absolutely fall in love with Bowie. Secondary characters come to life as well, as Laurel's parents thrill to be grandparents, and Laurel and Calder's best friends try to decide what their feelings are for each other (and set us up for a sequel). The "denim and dust" metaphor is a little strained, a couple of minor characters are more like charicatures, and the author seems to have a vendetta against wind turbines, but this is still a western romance worth reading.

A little bit spicy romance, a whole lot of hot mess express.
I'll tell you what the blurb doesn't, because I felt completely blindsided. She's running from her cheating husband, she has a 3yo son, she gets back together with her small-town ex-boyfriend while she's still married, and there's a paternity test plus OW drama.
I don't really have triggers, but these are definitely not tropes I enjoy. This is why accurate blurbs are so important. Try to attract the right audience, folks.
I decided to finish it because I'm nosy, and Calder was the one character I wanted to know more about. His backstory kept me invested. And it's not a bad book. The romance itself was nice enough, the spice was good, it just wasn't great or particularly fresh.
Adding a bunch of romance tropes to a book doesn't automatically make it deeper or more interesting. Sometimes you just end up with a hot mess of a romance and an underdeveloped plot.

Denim and Dust was an enjoyable read with plenty of chemistry, a good amount of spice, and an easy-to-follow romance that kept me turning the pages. If you’re looking for a steamy small-town romance with a rugged cowboy vibe, this one definitely delivers.
While I enjoyed it overall, the story felt fairly predictable, and I found myself wanting more depth from both the plot and the characters. The romance and spice were there, but I would’ve loved to see more emotional development and a stronger storyline to make the book more memorable.
Overall, this was a solid read that I enjoyed, even if it didn’t completely stand out from others in the genre. I’d recommend it to readers who enjoy spicy contemporary western romances and don’t mind a more straightforward, predictable plot.

A heartfelt second-chance romance that was hard to put down
Denim and Dust was such an enjoyable read. I love a good second-chance romance, and this one delivered everything I was hoping for. Laurel and Calder's history felt believable and their chemistry never faded, even after years apart. There was so much love, hurt, and longing between them that I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning. Their emotional connection was what really made this story shine. The small-town Texas setting added so much warmth and charm and I loved the sense of community throughout the book. Bowie completely stole my heart and brought so many sweet moments to the story. A few scenes felt a little repetitive, but it never took away from how invested I was in the characters. The ending left me smiling, and I wasn't quite ready to say goodbye.
Overall, this was a heartfelt, emotional romance with wonderful characters and plenty of heart.

As a woman who went through a divorce with a young child, I immediately identified with Laurel’s angst. Guilt, guilt, guilt. Was she doing the right thing for her son? From my personal experience and watching friends, women will endure a lot for their children, and when they’ve had enough, they still second-guess themselves. I got all of that in this book. I was hooked from the first chapter. And, as a parent, I even understood where her parents came from: they wanted their daughter to experience more from life than just graduate high school and get married. Then I met Calder, and I was doubly hooked. And learning what happened to him after she left? Honestly, it just broke my heart in a way that kept me reading. I loved this book, and I don’t understand some of the criticism I’ve read. To each his own, I guess. But I’m down as a fan, and I can’t wait for Tanner and Mercy’s story, which I hope is coming.

Overall I really enjoyed this story which follows Laurel and Calder reuniting after near 16 years.
Calder gave protective and strong, as well as being a firefighter, he was a perfect MMC. As for Laurel, she had her own issues to be dealing with but still somehow they find their way back into each others world.
My only issue with this second chance romance was the length of time apart and the almost ‘insta love’ when reunited. There was no slow burn to relearn who they are as people, it was giving obsessed and nothings changed, but that’s a LONG time to not see someone and a lot of big life changes which we learn throughout the story.
There were some great side characters too which I really enjoyed and would expect another book to really delve into some of them! I would definitely read a second book!

I thoroughly enjoyed this read. As a mom to a 3-year-old boy, this story really spoke to my heart. If you're looking for a feel-good romance with a satisfying, happy ending, this one absolutely delivers.
I loved watching both main characters go through their own journeys of self-discovery before ultimately finding their way back to each other. Their growth felt genuine, and it made the ending all the more rewarding.
That said, I wasn't a fan of Grant or his entire dynamic, and Darla....UGH she did nothing for me. And for someone who's supposed to always get his way, Grant really didn't seem to put in much effort.
In the end, though, those frustrations didn't take away from my enjoyment. I closed the book with a smile, and that's exactly what I was hoping for.
