Finished sitting on my cold couch in cold cold Melbourne.

Beautiful, brutal, dreamlike. A vortex of a novel. Prose so crisp it almost felt like ice if ice were a dream.

The author so perfectly captures and expresses the experience of life as it happens to you, so unflinchingly real as much as it is surreal and inexplicable. The descriptions of smells, feelings and textures, cinematic. Reminded me of reading Clarice Lispector.

A stunning debut and I can’t wait to read more of her incredible work.

Like the elusive album which recurs throughout the novel, this is a book of echoing ideas, motifs and reflections, all of which slowly build to some kind of terrifying, transcendent crescendo. Nothing is real, everything a story.

Reading this while experiencing a period of upheaval, already feeling like life was a trip, Melbourne winter blurring each day into the next. I kept feeling like I was inside of the narrative, I would not have been surprised if a reference to me appeared. Oscar annoyed me but I also understand him on some level. Some incredibly beautiful prose and very tight repeating imagery/motifs. The ending felt perfectly lucid. I loved the paper it was printed on and the beautiful cover which drew many eyes whenever I pulled it out. I <3 Australian lit!

Finished on the Frankston line somewhere around Armadale.

Valerie's writing is absolutely stunning. Her ability to capture a feeling is incredible. Many times throughout this book I found myself reading sentences over and over again and connecting deeply with the clear, evocative language realising it described something I had experienced but not been able to put into words.

Already hanging out for her next.

Great matte cover.

WOW!!! One of the best contemporary Aussie debuts I've read! The writing is so clean, precise and thoughtful. Some lines really stuck with me.
So interesting to read this knowing the author is also a film critic - it definitely has a very cinematic quality and captures the real/false/dreamy aspect of a movie, which feels very sensorial and poetic. I'm not personally a big fan of postmodernity but I did really enjoy the dreamy and surreal reading experience, which was at once detached and intimate. It really captures a feeling of being hungover and jobless lmfao. It's quite funny in that way..the whole time I'm like. HUHH.. HUHHHH.

Also such a great depiction of having a stinky cast...

just like the unsettling feeling of a dream you think you've had before in the moments before it becomes a nightmare

This reads like a modern gothic (shout out to the M1 and Bridge Road), also great if you love an unreliable narrator
