She married the only good one. She was sure of it.
After two men who lied to her face and called her crazy for noticing, Iris finally found Theo — the husband who closes the closet door so she can sleep, who brings tulips on a Tuesday, who is, she likes to joke, too wholesome to be real.
Then her best friend texts the question that ends Did Theo tell you about the concert yet?
He hadn't. A six-hour drive. A weekend on her best friend's floor. And not one word to his wife.
Everyone Iris loves swears she's overreacting. Her own body says a storm is coming. She's felt this exact cold before — twice — and both times she was right, and both times being right is what broke her.
This time, she stops apologizing for what she knows.
What follows is the slow detonation of a marriage, a friendship, and the lie Iris told herself to feel safe — told in her voice and, after the worst night of her life, in his. Because Theo has a confession, and he won't let her be kind about it. He'll tell you exactly what he is. He'll tell you he is not one of the good ones.
The only question left is what a woman does when she's finally believed — and whether forgiveness, if it's ever earned, happens on anyone's terms but hers.
One of the Good Ones is an emotional, slow-burn story of betrayal, intuition, and hard-won reclamation — a heroine who stops doubting herself, a best friend with a pattern, and a redemption that has to be paid for in full.
Content infidelity, emotional manipulation, and gaslighting.
✔ Marriage on the brink ✔ The almost affair ✔ Best-friend betrayal ✔ Gaslit heroine, finally believed ✔ Morally grey hero ✔ Grovel, grovel, grovel ✔ Dual POV — his confession will gut you ✔ Second chance✔ The other woman gets her comeuppance ✔ Hard-won HEA
This 164-page pile of pure dogshit is ninety-nine percent brain-melting internal diarrhea and maybe one percent actual goddamn plot!!😑😑 This fucking broad has a whole-ass, multi-volume Ted Talk queued up in her fried skull for every single fucking breath she takes.
You cannot show this dumb cunt a pair of dirty socks, a rusted-out lawnmower, a half-eaten pimento cheese sandwich, or her string of cheating ex-husbands without triggering a fifty-page mental lecture on the existential grief of cotton threads and emotional baggage. She will literally stare at a goddamn piece of pine furniture and deliver a three-hour doctoral dissertation on how the wood grain reflects her inner rage, completely forgetting that her husband is actively sliding his slimy pole into her best friend in the very next room. Her head is so far up her own self-pitying asshole that if you shoved a flashlight down her throat, you would just see a endless, rambling essay about the spiritual weight of her own bullshit, leaving every poor soul reading this completely praying for a sudden, merciful stroke just to make the endless fucking inner whining stop😮💨😮💨
Me and workplace-co-dependent-other-half forced us to read for a stupid wager. The prize was thirty days of hipster oat milk lattes, but considering both our souls got violently cheese-grated by page fifty, there are no winners here, just two traumatized survivors.
Soo the plot is basically the protagonist suffers from a terminal case of zero spine syndrome, having already been two-timed twice in her past, yet she acts completely blind to the blatant red flags waving directly in her face. When her suspiciously pristine spouse buys concert tickets to spend a solo weekend at her best friend's pad, this brainless doormat just waves him goodbye with a smile. Instead of castrating the bastard with a rusty spoon, shoving his testicles into a garbage disposal, or running his cods through a meat grinder, she lets him waltz out the door to sleep under another woman's roof completely unbothered. What the actual fuck did this brain-dead broad expect to happen. Did she think they were going to braid each other's hair and bake fucking cupcakes?!! I should probably calm down because clearly, the lady was merely observing the time-honored tradition of granting one's husband his private moment...unaware that those private moments were about to become alarmingly public on his penis...🥱😌
Naturally, the unfaithful prick returns home and confesses that he came within a hair's breadth of dipping his wick in the side chick. You handed a starving rat the keys to the fucking cheese factory and now you are weeping because he ate the whole block. YOU STUPID FUCKING DOORMAT!!! Turns out the two bastards had been having a full-blown emotional affair for an entire year, complete with a secret kiss from their last group trip. The only reason he pulled his dick out of the fire at the last second was because he saw a potted pansy and realized he did not want to look like the bad guy. Not because he gave a single shit about his wife, but because his fragile fucking ego could not handle being the villain in his own narrative.
After she finally kicks his cheating ass to the curb, his idea of a massive, panty-dropping apology tour is showing up with a handful of cheap letters and a flask of iced coffee. To make this insult even more ridiculous, the damn flask actually belonged to her grandmother in the first place. This cheap prick literally stole her own dead relative's property to buy his way back into her pants. Yet this hopeless doormat practically swoons, convincing herself that stealing her family heirloom back is the pinnacle of grand romantic gestures YOU STUPID FUCKING DOORMAT!!!A-LIVING-EXHIBIT-OF-ADVANCED-BOOT-SOLE-ABSORPTION-AND-ZERO-BOUNDARY-PSYCHOSIS!!!
To top off the audacity, he sends a follow-up note basically telling her that even though his pathetic grovel is supposed to make her wet, she needs to keep her knickers on because he finds her complete lack of self-respect a turn-off!!!
I wish I was smart enough to make this level of delusion up, but here is an actual direct quote from Romeo’s UNDIES-ON-THE-FLOOR manuscript:
"I’m not asking you to forgive that. I don’t think you should, fast. I think if you forgave me fast it would mean you’d gone back to being the person two other men trained you to be, and I would rather lose you than be the reason you become her again. So I’m just going to keep filling the thermos. Not as a question. As a fact"
(Please, darling, hold onto your rage for just a bit longer...if you drop your panties and forgive my cheating ass today, it ruins the heroic, slow-burn martyr arc I am currently constructing for my therapist🥺🥺)
He even checks his narcissistic ass into therapy just so an overpaid shrink can validate how brave he is for bringing stolen caffeine to his traumatized spouse. Because naturally, after moving mountains by repeatedly filling a thermos with coffee, a lesser man might have been tempted to become insufferably impressed with himself. Thankfully, therapy was there to make sure the panty-dropping humanitarian work did not go to his head......🙃(I refuse to re-read that ebook and extract the quote from there, but he actually admits he wanted credit for filling her thermos. And who could blame him? First you fail to build him a statue for keeping his dick in his pants, then you kick him out instead of worshipping his near-fidelity, and now you won't even give him credit for pouring liquid into a metal tube? How dare you hold back your applause after taking a whole twenty minutes to forgive him. Look at you, acting all high and mighty for taking a brief pause before returning to your true calling as human flooring💀)
She insists to the audience that she is holding her ground, yet she is actively letting this manipulative bastard take her on romantic dinner dates every single night. Apparently, in her broken fucking brain, getting wine-and-dined by your unfaithful husband does not count as taking him back as long as you do not label it official. The entire neighborhood, her fake friends, and her own delusional inner voice spend the entire second half of the book gaslighting her into believing this pathetic excuse for a man deserves a medal. The plot drags at a glacial pace while she spends ten full pages dissecting the metaphysical meaning of a couch cushion or giving a bloated hundred-word lecture on the concept of anger. By the time she finishes her endless mental diarrhea, any emotional punch the story had completely dies of boredom. I tapped out at seventy percent And of course, the plot does that classic backwoods trick where the other woman gets burned at the stake while the unfaithful dickhead walks away smelling like roses just because he ran an emotional whorehouse instead of a physical one. Apparently, as long as you label his sleazy emotional prostitution as "emotional," it triggers the ultimate HE-IS-JUST-A-MISUNDERSTOOD-LITTLE-POUTY-PRINCESS-WHO-JUST-NEEDS-SOME-TLC-AND-A-JUICE-BOX clause, making him completely immune to consequences. And please grab a bucket for my vomit while we marvel at his ground-shaking, earth-shattering excuse for letting himself get completely hog-tied and brainwashed by this cartoonish predator of a side chick, because according to him, his wife put him on such a lofty pedestal that he just had to keep his divine god-tier halo on at home. Apparently, the poor little alpha male was suffering so damn hard under the crushing weight of being worshiped that he was forced to drag his sorry ass over to the side piece just so he could show her his sensitive, vulnerable, diaper-wetting side....
You see, Mr. Hyde was the ugly, twisted embodiment of pure evil lurking within a respected gentleman. But in modern trash-romance logic, Hyde isn't a murderer at all...he's just a misunderstood guy who really needed a safe space to whine about his wife believing in him too much! Acute Deification-Induced Infidelity Syndrome (ADIS). Symptoms include an overwhelming, debilitating fear that if your wife catches you venting or having a bad day, she’ll realize you aren't literally Jesus Christ and drop dead on the spot. Doctor's prescription? A swift kick to the nuts and a divorce lawyer.
And thus concludes the most devastatingly swoon-worthy love story ever put on paper. My heart is a bloody pulp, my standards are in the stratosphere, and I am ruined forever. If a man is not actively cheating on me to protect my holy image of him, bringing me back my own stolen family heirlooms, and diagnosing himself with severe pedestal syndrome, I do not fucking want him!!!
LOOK UPON THIS GLORIOUS, ETERNAL ROMANCE, YE MORTALS, AND DESPAIR! HE CHEATED, HE CROCKED, HE STOLE HER DEAD MEE-MAW'S THERMOS WITH ZERO FUCKING CARE! HE DROPPED ON HIS KNEES WITH A COLD BREW AND A THONG-RETENTION WARNING SO BOLD, AND HER BRAIN-DEAD ASS SWOONED RIGHT ON CUE LIKE THE GREATEST LOVE STORY EVER FUCKING TOLD!!! (Cue the majestic medieval curtsy before I hurl into a bucket🥸)
Ps - In hindsight, the minimalist grovel was probably for the best. Anything more elaborate would have required her to think about it, and we had already suffered enough of that💀💀That's a good man there, y'all, a real prince among pigs, for keepin' his grovel so pathetic and saving us from her brain melting through her ears again!!! He may be a lying, thieving, emotional-prostitution-running sonofabitch, but at least his grovel wasn't long enough to trigger a twelve-page rumination on the color beige! If I ever meet this author, I'm gonna have some WORDS, but first, hand me a mint julep and a Xanax!🫠🫡
I had a boss years ago who I had a very paternal-mentor type relationship, built through trust and time. Once when emotionally spilling about a potential affair my ex had, with someone I allowed in my house, he said never let another woman lounge in your backyard when you’re not home. At first I was naive and didn’t get it. I was in my 20’s and though life had kicked me in the face plenty, I still trusted too easily. Thankfully my experience wasn’t a best friend like our fmc. That’s a hard line to cross and though the husband and friend didn’t fully cross, it was enough of an emotional affair as any. I stayed up late into the night reading, my nervous system, pins and needles just from the tension and the angst. Whoa, for being on the shorter size, it was sooo good. There was definite grovel, but what made it a 5* was the self worth she found in herself by the end. That being more important than saving a marriage.
I’m not sure if this is AI but it has a lot of those AI adjacent profound statements no real author writes. But my rating isn’t for that. It’s for the doormat wife who decided to forgive a year long affair and the author who told us he grovels. Nope!
I can't believe that for over a year he planned an affair with her Best friend. He knew when he left the house that he was going to cheat. He knew it. He planned it. And he gaslighted her for the entire week before. And she gave him permission to go. He wanted another woman and he said that. He wanted her so bad but then he saw the pansy. Which was their flower and he decided used not to. Not because of his wife but because he didn't want to be the bad guy. I just had a hard time when she let him back in. But nothing physical happened except for a kiss a year before, and she almost caught them, and her touching his face. She was an evil person. I'm glad I don't have a best friend! Lol. I could never recover from this. Ever. I liked the writing just hated the premise.
Why 5*? because it was emotional, because it was about self worth and growth. It was about forgiveness without forgetting.
I don't believe in forgiving the cheater, but I liked the way this book was written and I do believe that people can change. It's hard to explain because these two ideas seem contradictory.somehow, she didn t take back the cheater, the old version of her husband but instead, she got the new version of him,the one who had changed
God are women this weak. She kissed your bf and didn't tell you. He plans a weekend with her, not telling you.
You knew he was going to cheat and you just ket him. You knew he was having an affair and did not. But oh you act all big and bad when he tells you. Please stop.
But he brings her coffee, she sats she didn't take hik back because well she never really left him. No divorce talk, just takes it.
He will cheat and she will stay.
I really dont like the writing style. Don't jump years or months a head for one line and go back.
And he still lied and didn't tell the truth about what alk he did.
This book is just AI slop. The story is a great premise based off of a Reddit post, it’s a shame someone couldn’t take the time to actually write their own version.
The plot is good but this gives written with AI help. Dual POV in places are repetitive. There is no comeuppance for the OW other than she loses the friend group. Big whoopty doo. The story lacks emotion after the betrayal.
The book is written as a Tell vs Show. You’re getting majority inner monologue and less dialogue between characters. This should’ve been labeled as a diary.
The premise of the story is good but it all falls flat. She makes him work for his grovel and she doesn’t just take him back after 2 weeks. If anything that’s the best part of the book. Book lacks emotion and could’ve been better if there was actual showing and dialogue. The inner monologue and the whole story reads as if she should’ve just told it in 3rd person.
I wanted to like this as it seemed the perfect set up for a terrible gut punch and epic grovel. While the beginning pulled you in, it wasn’t long before the discordant timeline and repetitiveness were a frustrating hill to circumvent. I also felt that we didn’t get enough of Theo’s painful self-reflection or comeuppance for Emma. If you want quick rage read, this might be for you.
Enjoyed the story. I have been married for 45 years and in those years there are good and bad years. It takes work to keep a marriage alive. Staying through the tough times builds a stronger marriage. I think people give up too quickly and will never get to experience the love that develops from choosing to stay and fight for their marriage
This book was "one of the good ones". It was both thoughtful and thought provoking. It is written as though the h and at times the H are speaking to you about their story. The h and H are married. The h has had two disastrous betrayals with men in which she was made to feel wrong and small about acting on her instincts. When her instincts sense that something is wrong with her husband, she struggles with applying her past experience to this unexpected context. Her husband has planned to drive six hours to visit her best friend and attend a concert, a trip she knew nothing about. She uses several examples throughout her story of how two things can be true at the same time. The H hates making the six hour trip to visit her friend. He hates the congestion and traffic so the h does the driving. But he has no problem making the choice to drive six hours to attend a concert with her bbf. The marriage unravels. The bbf is not who she pretends to be. The H has to look at himself in a mirror. Really well told story.
I read a lot of these and tbh, I skim through a lot of the rebuilding parts because it's repetitive across multiple books/authors (don't judge, but I like the emotional impact of the betrayal. The redemption is boring to me) Blah, blah, blah he realizes how much he hurt her, goes to therapy or does some form of physical labor he says isn't sacrifice but about "learning to be a better man" etc. You don't get that tired trope here. There was real work, by both characters, to understand themselves and work toward being better people, for themselves and for their partner. It read as emotionally honest and painful.
As for other reviews saying this was written by AI, I just shrug. If it was, then it's a smarter, better AI than dozens of other authors are using to write this type of story. This one was refreshing and came at the betrayal trope in a unique way that I really enjoyed.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My favorite troupe is MIT, and this one is pretty darn good. It starts from the beginning of what she starts to notice. Its always the one you least suspect. Then our H plays dumb but the wife knows. And the OW knew exactly what she was doing when she texted h. See she was her bff, yup! Then we get to go along with the messy aftermath and he's healing which isn't always linear. I loved that we get to see it all play out.
This is a marriage in teouble book told so differently. I loved the difference and how everything unfolded. I'm definitely adding this author on my list to see what else I can find of theirs to read.
I tore through this. Basically one sitting. It’s short and to the point so if you want a quick hit of drama or stab of betrayal with some grovel (kinda) this really does the trick. I have a love hate relationship with cheating trope books. The feeling of anxiety in the lead up, the heart pounding, the staring daggers at my man out of camaraderie, the glee over revenge, the dopamine hit when the grovel and redemption hits, HOWEVER, I’ll only put up with so much. A lot of cheating tropes have the mmc step over lines I just don’t care to see redemption from. I felt Theos betrayal was egregious. Maybe one step behind a full blown “meet me at the local motel for a quickie” affair, but an affair nonetheless. I have more stomach for emotional affairs than physical, and his choice to continue that relationship, knowing he was cheating, it just didn’t sit right with me in the end. I would’ve been more forgiving of his character if this whole story took place after the late night kiss. Not months later when he was planning on likely sleeping with her. I didn’t want his redemption and I didn’t care for his POVs though I think they were important. This whole book is basically one long inner monologue. I mean, very very limited dialogue, which I think I’d normally hate, but the insight into the coherent mind of a cheater and someone being cheated on I actually thought was really deep. I see several AI accusations in the reviews, which I just didn’t get. There are so many thoughts in here that, if you’ve ever been cheated on, are extremely difficult to vocalize. Rationalizations that sound crazy out loud but written out are coherent and profound.
Didn’t care for the couple, but the brain behind it was really interesting.

I am astounded at some of the one star reviews of this story. Wow.
To me, this is one of the best psychological reviews of an "almost" betrayal I have read. I loved the way it was written. How she brings you in like a witness of the story she is about to tell. A little Jane Eyre-ish.
Good title: One of the Good Ones. Or so she thought. Having escaped two other relationships that gaslit her into believing she was the one who had a problem whenever she sensed she was being cheated on, her self esteem too some big hits. So when she married one of the good ones, she realized she married a more subtle version of the same. But this time she drew from her own instinctive awareness that something was wrong and didn't talk herself out of it. When it all came out in the wash, you saw the subtilty of her husband's motives, the rationalization, the justification.
This is the kind of relationship that can be saved. By openness, honesty and respect. It was just as revealing to him as it was to her the deceit he was forming in his own mind that allowed what took place. Highly recommended.
Cheating = H and h's bff/OW had a year long emotional affair, one kiss and almost more but H stopped it.
OW drama = OW gaslit the h after it all came out, but h did not buy into it and it caused the OW to spiral. OW tried to frame the narrative to benefit herself, but it did not work. Come to find out this was a pattern of behavior the OW had of going after her bff's significant other. Comeuppance? OW is kicked out of the friend group and the one thing that truly would drive her nuts, the h not responding to her and ghosting her occurred.
Grovel = H spent about a year of groveling and the h only allowed him back with the understanding that she does not have to get over or forget what he did. She can bring it up at any time and he will have to learn how to navigate the damage he caused. Eventual HEA.
Well written. Let's start there. The next thing I'd say is this is very different from any other betrayal story I've read—and I've been in a drama kick lately so I've read a lot of them. The real talk about gaslighting grabbed my attention because it's usually brushed over and people think they know what it entails but until you've really experienced it, and had enough self-reflection or help, the scars left behind that turn your own mind against itself are crippling.
My final thoughts on this are that it was thought provoking. Re-read material. And I can say out of the thousands of books I've read, I've never once said the previous sentence in a review.
This one definitely went into the pain emotional cheating causes. It was heartbreaking. I’m glad they found their way back to each other even tho it was a bit of hit or miss for awhile.
Can’t really count as a read because i skimmed most of it. There was just something about the writing i didn’t like. I think it was because the MMCs were talking to the reader directly.
Great story set up. Horrible execution. Pretty sure this was AI-written, because it was very similar to ai speech. Also hated how the entire book was breaking the 4th wall and talking to the reader.
This dude didn’t “almost” anything….he cheated, period.
Good writing and a compelling story. One drawback is that flowery language wraps ugly stuff in non specifics. It’s a bit frustrating because feelings and events are often alluded to and you’re left with the sense that you’re trying to grab it all out of the air. I needed more if I was going to care more.
