"Tell me the truth, Cecily. After four Seasons of being unnoticed by every gentleman in England, do you truly believe a fifth will be any different?"
Cecily could not tell her sister the truth, because the truth was that Theodora Davies had been overlooked so completely, for so many years, that all of London had quite forgotten she existed, until the afternoon a startled horse in Hyde Park sent her stumbling, mortified and blushing, straight into the arms of the most pursued Duke in England.
Edison Cavendish, Duke of Westmere, has spent fifteen years being hunted by every ambitious mother in London, and beneath the marble the ton calls icy lives a man who has not been truly seen by a single soul in his entire adult life. He should release this blushing stranger and walk away, yet for the first time in years someone has looked up at him without seeing the title, and he finds that he cannot.
He offers her an arrangement that seems perfectly sensible, a pretend courtship for the Season to spare them both, with an end agreed upon before it has even begun. What neither of them counted on was how dangerous it becomes to pretend, when the woman who has spent her whole life being unseen is finally, properly, attentively looked at, by the only man in England who has been waiting just as long to be seen in return.
But the gossip columns are sharpening their pens, and when the truth of their pretend courtship comes out, only one of them will have the courage to admit they were never pretending at all.
A clean, slow-burn Regency romance about a wallflower the world had forgotten, a duke the world had never known, and the quiet ordinary miracle of being seen at last by exactly the right person.
I enjoyed this book. The FMC is a spinster wallflower who has been told she needs to make a match in her fifth season or be shipped off to an elderly relative. She has one sister who is very compassionate. The MMC has walled his feeling up as he finds most of the young ladies are after his title and fortune and care nothing for him. They meet by accident as she stumbles into his arms at the park which is witnesses by many. He is attracted to her humor and outspokenness. He proposes a fake engagement. During that time they find a lot in common, but then rumors throw doubt his way. Will they figure out that their love is real? The author seemed to understand the feeling of both main characters. Thankfully her sister and his best friend and his sister see things pretty clearly.
This is a wonderful story with complex characters who show one face to most, but underneath it is the real them. You will enjoy reading this story as their personalities are revealed layer by layer. Can something that starts out as an arrangement turn into something real or will the social class distinction stop that? Read this tory to find out.
The Duke meets Lady Theo on accident in the park & everyone notices. He seeks her out on excursions & everyone talks more. A fake courtship is what they are Calling it even though it feels real. And then at the end of the season they both retreat back to order & are truly very miserable; so who will make the first move..why both of them!!
Thea has come to London for her fifth season knowing she is to find a match or be sent to her aunt and 17cats. The Duke of Westmeer Is known as the ice duke. They meet one afternoon when a run a way horse make Thea almost fall into the Dukes arms. From there it is a story of a wallflower becomes the wife and Dutchess of Westmeer And almost fairytale story.
I liked this story from the start and I appreciate the unfolding of the story with a rewarding description of the story and dynamics that affected the hero and heroine.
