I am convinced this author is a time traveler because the accuracy is beautiful. The way she blends time travel, history, the accuracy of the crimes and the era, along with critical scenes like the speakeasies and basement clubs built into brownstones, was incredible. It gave us such a vivid look at Harlem through the eyes of those living in 1924.
The story touched on some of the harsh realities of being Black in America at the time, while also showing the path we were creating for ourselves in the process. As Joy is transported again, she is forced to make decisions that ultimately help her on her quest to save these missing women. Along the way, she discovers more about her calling and the difference between having a choice in how you manifest that calling.
This was beautifully written and allowed me to completely immerse myself in the experience from the first page to the last. The historical details, the setting, the crimes, and the time-travel element all came together in a way that made the story feel incredibly real.
And as always, I need a man to love me the way Daniel loves Joy. 😭 This man literally means he will go to HELL and back for you. The devotion and loyalty?! Yeah… I need that kind of love in my life.

If Ev'ry Goodbye Ain't Gone was honeysuckle and woodsmoke, then By Hook or By Crook would be whiskey, cigars, and salt air.
By the same token, this second installment in the Time-Drift series kicks the volume up a notch (or five). And the sound? JAZZ. Duke Ellington, to be precise.
This book feels like stepping inside a time machine to the Prohibition Era. Or in Joy's case, falling through the waves of time. Again!
This will be hard to write sans spoilers, but I'll try. So our power couple, Joy and Daniel, are back and better than ever, showcasing their grit and conviction not only for each other, but also in the face of the predicaments Ms. Benjamin unceremoniously (and relentlessly) thrusts them into. And considering this isn't a long book? I'm impressed!
Whenever Joy's on the page, I don't know whether to smile or yell like a silly lily-white fangirl! Love her so much. Ugh, the profanities I suppressed watching her trials and tribulations, though. This story is not for the faint of heart... but it's worth it.
And Daniel? At some point, he leveled up from Black Horse to the Gunslinger, and I am Here. For. IT. All I'll say is, the image of him whipping those smoking Remingtons around will live rent-free in my head (on an old, flicker-y film roll) for a long time. A VERY long time. And I may be casting famous actors in my head. Just saying...
Now for the sleeper hit, ROY. Roy, my boy! This man is so wholesome, with his trusty sidekick, Catcher. An old, lonely cop and his dog, just trying to live out his retirement in peace on a little houseboat. I mean... C'mon. He was an absolute home run of a side character. I won't spoil how he plays into the plot, but it's mmmm, perfect.
Like always, Ms. Benjamin brings the history and vivid descriptions in droves. If you ever wondered what it would be like to step into 1920s Harlem, look no further. I could see it. Smell it. I was there, and it was a grand, heart-stopping, WILD time.
I highlighted a bunch of lines, but I think this one is my favorite:
When the whispers stopped, something else awakened in her veins. First it was quiet, lowly, like an ustoked ember. Joy's pain and shame poured into it. Fed it, till finally it blazed like a wildfire. A wildfire strong enough to level the entire city.
From the women who suffered unimaginable things and died. From the forgotten women who quietly calculated, then steadfastly carried the world on their backs. The silently strong, and the unapologetically loud. Those before their time. Yet the world refused to see them. Ancient. Feminine.
I WAS SHOOK! As a woman, YES! And full disclosure, I'm not a black woman (shocker). But this spoke to my SOUL. *Chef Kiss*

Despite being in two different times Daniel and Joy are connected. Daniel is willing to take on the world if that means getting his other half back where she belongs

Here we see the author highlight the beauty of Harlem, the Capitol of Black America. Despite his fascination of what he discovered to be he cars, the cobbled roads, the architecture, trains and the craftsmanship of these structures, he soon realized this future would overtime replace his version of time. I can't imagine what it was like to stand in the future in that moment. However, he remained focused on finding Joy. As danger envelopes Joy and her ability to fight is impaired she is soon guided by her ancestors and other strong women. I love that we get to see just determined to keep fighting to return to her family. Her will to survive is tested and she matches Roy's intensity everytime. This story weaves together love, history, suspense, magic and time travel. As it unfolds we soon realize what the saying "Sometimes destiny demands more than we are willing to give" truly means. Syreeta gives us a captivating adventure in 141 pages. The story takes off and keeps you engaged from start to finish.

This novel is a beautiful incorporation of action, sci-fi, romance, historical fiction, and the Divine Feminine and somehow, Syreeta Benjamin makes all of these elements work together seamlessly.
Syreeta has once again captured the syncopated relationship between a strong Black heroine and a head-bustin’ cowboy, giving us a romance that is just as powerful as the action surrounding it.
And BABY… this was a PAGE TURNER. There was no saggy middle, no dragging storyline, no point where I found myself thinking, “Okay, let’s get to it.” The story kept moving, and every element felt intentional.
But what really stayed with me was the deeper message.
This story is a beautiful example of how humans can alchemize their toughest moments into something that serves not only themselves, but the collective. There is something powerful about taking what was meant to break you and transforming it into wisdom, purpose, and possibility.
And if you really pay attention, the story reminds us of something important:
The past doesn’t have to repeat itself.
Sometimes, we are given the opportunity to look back—not to remain there, but to understand, choose differently, and create something new.
Syreeta did her thing with this one.
Action. Romance. History. Sci-Fi. Black cowboys. A powerful heroine. Divine Feminine energy.

Joy has been living with an unspoken fear for years, worried about when the universe would snatch her away from her family. Under this fear, she settles in with Daniel and the family they have built. One moment she's enjoying time with her husband, the next she's swept away. This time, Daniel is in the mix and willing to do anything to get Joy back. Daniel's mother, Mama Henrietta, works with Daniel on a plan to get Joy back home.
In her new timeline, Joy finds an ally but is still confused about why she went through another time shift and why now. Danger is on her heels, as Daniel and Joy fight to find their way to each other. To add fuel to the fire, an outside entity threatens everything they are fighting for.
Book two is Kindred meets Quantum Leap meets The Sixth Sense as an emotionally charged suspense thriller. Providing more heaviness and emotional pull than book one, there is so much to keep you engaged in the story. I truly enjoyed the historical aspects of the story, which added more layers to the timeline that Joy is transported to.
This may be a novella, but Syreeta Benjamin writes so well, you are left full, learning a little history, understanding the direction of the story, and trying to solve the mystery with Joy. A time-jumping, paranormal suspense thriller was not what I expected, but I love it!

By Hook or By Crook surprised me in the best way. It takes everything I loved about Every Goodbye Ain’t Gone and expands it, while taking the story somewhere darker than I expected.
This time we get 1924 Harlem, a mystery involving missing Black women, more ancestral magic, more history, and a love that quite literally refuses to be stopped by time. Daniel’s determination to find his wife no matter where, or when, she is was everything.
I especially loved watching Joy grow. She still has the softness she had in the first book, but this story puts her through things that change her. Her growth isn’t easy or without cost, and by the time she begins to understand more of her magic, her strength, and herself, it feels earned.
Once again, the history is woven naturally into the story instead of being placed on top of it. And there are so many clever connections and little surprises along the way that made me realize just how intentionally this story is being built.
I won’t spoil that ending, but I absolutely loved it. The story goes somewhere I did not expect, yet somehow it feels like there was no other way it could have gone.
And yes, she left us with a cliffhanger.
Thankfully, I already know Book Three is coming because ma’am... 😂

We pick back up where we left off at, Joy and Daniel have built a life together with their daughter Lettie and once again Joy is pulled through space and time. She lands in 1924 Harlem and we are introduced to a new cast of characters.
This time we have more action, more passion and more intrigue. The stakes are higher and there's no way Daniel is letting Joy go this easily. They team up with an ex-cop who knows all the ends and outs of the crime world, turns out Roy has every reason to get his lick back also.
This 2nd book might be my favorite because historical fiction is my Jam and you can clearly see the research that was done with this one. Any book that has me doing additional research is a good book!

My time travel friend Joy is back. It picks up exactly where part 1 ended. Joy indeed time travels and leaves behind her husband Daniel (aka Black Horse) & her daughter.
You already know Daniel is not having that, and finds a way to time jump exactly where Joy went. Their destination was Harlem in the 1920’s. Joy and Daniel both wake up at the exact same man’s boathouse. A retired Sicilian & German detective named Rosario Rossi - Roy for short.
Joy and Daniel both know that the Universe sent her to this time for a particular reason. And they definitely start giving you pieces immediately. They definitely needed Roy. Roy helped them big time w his knowledge of his time. Between Joy’s gifts & grit. And Daniel’s natural intuition & grit. We saw that they combated their obstacles head-on.
I don’t want to give too much away, but I love how the author (Syresta) sprinkles in actual historical information & events.
And of course, it ends in a way that has you on pins and needles for part 3 😩

I just finished reading Ev’ry Goodbye Ain’t Gone and By Hook or By Crook by Syreeta Benjamin, and BABYYYY… I was PULLED IN! 😭📚
Both books are short, but honestly, I WISH they were longer because I was not ready to let this story go! Magic, time travel, historical fiction AND a love story!✨ This is my first time reading something like this, and now I need to find more books in this genre ASAP! 😂
And Daniel… 👀 he is making his way to the TOP of my book husband list. 😂😂
Both were an easy 5⭐️ for me, and now I’m just over here patiently waiting on Book 3 like… 👀😂

Joy is thrown into 1924 Harlem while Daniel refuses to let time keep them apart, and their love continues to be the heartbeat of this story. What I really enjoyed was how Benjamin lets us experience history without making the novel feel like a history lesson. The people, the places, the culture—it feels lived in.
But underneath the time travel and romance, this also feels like a love letter to women who believe the universe is speaking to them, telling them they’re meant to do something more.

You are a gift.
Joy’s journey is about learning what that gift means, what she’s willing to sacrifice for it, and ultimately understanding that being chosen doesn’t mean losing your ability to choose.
The characters are where this sequel really shines. Daniel and Joy’s love remains the anchor, but characters like Roy are just so damn easy to like. He brings his own heart, history, and personality to the story without taking anything away from the characters we already love.
And then there’s that twist.
I won’t spoil it, but it’s the kind of reveal that leaves you feeling a little unsettled while also making the ending PERFECT. It changes the energy of those final moments and leaves the door wide open for what comes next.
This is a story about women, history, destiny, sacrifice, love, and finding your agency even when the universe seems to have already written the path ahead of you.

I also loved how real Black history was woven into the story, especially Stephanie “Queenie” St. Clair and the Harlem Renaissance. Five star read!
Syreeta Benjamin mixed Black history, time travel, ancestral magic, romance, and action—and somehow made every piece work! This author has really understood to mix the culture and magical time drifting to the tee. I would’ve never thought I would enjoy these type of books but this author gave me a gem and anything they have in the future, I’m grabbing. Great job, Prez :)

I'm absolutely in love with the Time Drift Series! The way that love traveled through times and didn't stop until love made it's way back home! Joy and my man Black Horse were the most gangsta couple I've come across in a while and I loved every single moment of it. This story was well written 👏🏾 and beautifully thought out. I was engaged from beginning to end cause baby WE WALKING RIGHT THROUGH DA FRONT DOOR!!!!!!!

By Hook or By Crook was such a ride!
Joy’s dynamic in this book is everything she’s gifted, pissed off about being displaced, but still can't turn her back when women start going missing in Harlem. Meanwhile, Daniel/Blackhorse out in the West being completely ready to let the world burn if he can't have Joy! That is the exact energy I look for in a main lead.
The pacing kept me flipping pages, and the blend of genres felt super fresh. Syreeta Benjamin definitely delivered on the emotion and the plot twists.
