Name First: A Novel

NAME FIRSTA machine calls it silence. A translator hears wind.

Anna Levina’s job is to correct other people’s words. As a London-based translator for the Archive of Displaced Places, she reviews damaged testimonies from erased towns, broken records, and lives made unreadable by official language.

Then she receives the testimony of Matvei Orlov, an elderly witness from ZV-17 — a northern settlement officially listed as having no civilian population, despite records of twenty-three schoolchildren.

The machine transcript gives her forty-one minutes of silence.

Anna hears wind.

As she restores the testimony, one mistranslated word changes everything. The machine has rendered Vera as faith. But Vera was not an idea. She was a child.

Soon Anna is drawn into a record of evacuation, altered names, missing children, and a second list that should never have existed. Her mother knows something. The archive knows less than it claims. And Anna’s own name may be part of the lie.

Quietly devastating and psychologically precise, Name First is a literary mystery about translation, motherhood, and the fragile border between survival and erasure.

Before faith, there was a name.
