At sixteen, Alexandria thinks she has everything figured out. Growing up privileged and carefree in the land of Republic City, Aly has always sought her independence. But with her father’s kingdom overrun by enemies long thought conquered, she now finds herself caught in a never-ending battle of survival, which forces her to rely on others. She and her childhood friends, Aaron and Landon, along with their beloved - but fiercely protective - animal guardians, must band together to regain their beloved city. However, with the impending battle come obstacles that challenge and force her to choose which path will best lead to the truth, and ultimately to victory.
The first edition of Ripples, with the lighthouse cover, was unedited. Ripples with the pendant necklace as the cover is the edited version.
CAYLEN D. SMITH was born and raised in Southern California. She published Ripples, her debut young adult novel in the Guardian Series, at the age of nineteen. Now, five books later, A Thief's Game, is her first book in The Robyn Hoode Chronicles. Smith holds a Bachelors Degree in English. She enjoys reading, drawing and attending plays and musicals.
Wonderful adventure. You can't help go along for the ride with Aly and her friends. I loved the main character and rooted for her all the way. Aly was an enjoyable character to read about. And I liked the way this book was written. "Ripples" was so addictive I read it in one day. Once I started it was difficult to put down. I would recommend putting it in your to-read shelf.
I received a copy of this book via Goodreads FirstReads for review.
In the world of the Guardians, the children of the four council members are given magic talking animals to be their friends and protectors for life. When the council is attacked and overthrown, three of these kids and their guardians are thrown out on their own, fighting for their lives and their city. The action is fast paged and the story is great. I cannot WAIT for the next book to come out.
The writing itself has a lot of typos and awkward sentence structure that makes it hard to get through, but once you get used to it, the book goes by easily. As a self-published book, minor errors like this are to be expected, and they really didn't take away from the story at all.
I loved this book, and cannot WAIT to read the second one. :)
I received this book though the first reads program. As requested, below is an honest review of the book.
The story involves a young girl who lives a privileged life with her father in a fantastical city. Her world is shattered once the city is overtaken by rebels and she is forced to leave her world behind. It follows the adventure she goes through and the different obstacles she faces.
At the beginning I found the book to be catchy and interesting. However, throughout the book I began to get lost. The plot of the story jumps around a little too much for my taste and I found it difficult to follow. Also, there are a lot of unnecessary descriptive words that make it a little tedious to read. The spelling and grammar mistakes also made it hard for me to get through it.
Being the author's first book I admire what she has done. There is a lot of creativity involved in the making of this book. I wish it had been a smoother read with less extreme adjectives to describe what was going on. Once it has been properly edited I'm sure it will be an easier more enjoyable read.
Loved this book! Can't believe this is the debut book from a first time author. Kept me wanting to read more and I've actually read it twice. Excited to read the second in the series when it comes out next fall. Teens and adults will enjoy.
