Two men fight for the affections of punk frontman Julian, who doesn’t always know what’s best for him.
In ‘80s London, the fantastical Julian Collier is a charismatic punk rock band frontman. Everyone is drawn to him, including Rahul, his best friend and bandmate, who has loved him for years.
When a mysterious upper-class stranger suddenly inserts himself into their lives, it becomes clear Julian isn’t entirely straight, and the two men struggle for Julian’s affections. But the best man might not win this fight.
𝑭𝒂𝒗𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒆 𝑸𝒖𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒔: “God, how I’ll miss you, Rahul thought desperately. How every day, I’ll wake up thinking about you and every night I’ll go to sleep thinking about you. How my arms will feel empty without you, feeling the ghost of you within them the way you feel in them now. Christ, how I wish you knew, even one iota, how much you mean to me, how much every muscle in my body is screaming for you, how there’s no me without you.”
“But you only like shiny, bright things. As soon as your newest toy gets the Sheen worn off of it, you’re off to the next shiny thing. But your toys don’t forget you. They still love you. They can’t help it. Only now you treat him like shit because you know you can. You know they won’t leave you. You know how they love you. You feed off of it. You’re a fucking vampire, is what you are. And you leave everyone around you drained and feeling like shit. The bloody vampire, you are.”
𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘: Firstly, I want to thank Nicky for allowing me ARC read this book! However, with that being said all opinions are my own.
Ooooo Rahul how my heart breaks for you! 😭 I throughly enjoyed this one, I knew that book one ends on a cliffhanger, but goodness I wasn’t expecting the cliffhanger to hurt so bad! Also, my heart is so tore between who I might want Julian to end up with because I think it’s very clear Michael isn’t going to leave us all that soon. Michael’s character throughout the book makes me have so many questions that I need answered immediately in book 2! There is a bit of time-jumping in the book which most of the time I do not really like in books however these fit perfectly within the story and didn’t distract from the overall flow of the story. I felt many emotions during this one, I adored Julian’s personality throughout the story all while wanting to hit him upside the head sometimes, while wanting to give Rahul the biggest hug, and also sit Michael down and stare at him until he tells me all his secrets.

I love novels about complicated people in complicated relationships.
Rahul Chaand has had a crush on his best friend, Justin Collier, since they were children, and it has shaped his adult life around Justin. When Justin breaks up with his long-term girlfriend, Aisling, only to fall into the arms of Michael, an older, enigmatic man, their bond is tested.
While Rahul and Justin’s friendship is the center of the novel, I love that the story is told in 3rd Person, so we also get to see how others in the group move around Justin. One of the things that really struck me about the novel is how quickly everyone is to treat Justin almost like a child with no agency. While Justin’s affable, irresponsible nature drives some of this, it really stood out to me that everyone was confident they knew the right direction for Justin’s life.
I had immense sympathy for Rahul, but I also found myself noting the places where he failed to see Justin as a person. He is so caught up in his own feelings and his need to take care of Justin that he’s missing the opportunity to get to really know him.
And Michael…um, I have so many questions that I don’t even know where to start.
Finally, it’s also hard to root for Justin, especially as we get glimpses of the past or the moments where we see that he is not nearly as oblivious as he pretends to be.
As Electric Boy slowly unfolds, we see how delightfully complicated (this feels like an understatement in certain cases) these characters are and how messy love and relationships can be. The writing is excellent, and I cannot wait to see what is up next for these characters.
--- I received an advance copy of this book at no charge. This is my honest, voluntary review.
How every day, I’ll wake up thinking about you, and every night I’ll go to sleep thinking about you. How my arms feel empty without you, feeling the ghost of you within them the way you feel in them now.” . . First and foremost, thank you to Nicky for allowing me to get an early copy of Electric Boy. . . When it comes to world-building, Electric Boy hit so many marks for me. With every page, you are immersed in all things 80’s and London. It’s punk and intriguing, with a myriad of highs and lows.
For me, I really love the representation: with Rahul’s character and the diverse sexualities Nicky has crafted, an inclusive novel with a spectrum of characters, identities, and cultures.
Now, let’s get into the meat and bones of Electric Boys. Warning: EB does end in a cliffhanger, and it’s gonna hurt, and you probably have to leave with more questions than answers, but I have hope that Nicky isn’t gonna keep us hanging. I myself know we’re stuck with Michael for now…but I can’t help but root for Julian to see Rahul wants him.
Overall, Nicky has a locked-in reader with me. Electric Boys is mysterious, immersive, and a love triangle that has you hanging on to the very last page.
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Oh, the pain of this story. I am a total sucker for best friends to lovers, and when you throw in a bit of rockstar vibes, bisexual angst, and a lifetime of uncertainty, it's like a cup of coffee first thing in the morning: I love it, and I want more.
I thought all of the characters were great. Michael is complicated; there's darkness in him, but also moments of genuine concern that kept me uncertain. Julian is beautifully uninhibited and painfully himself. And Rahul? Oh, God... the pining, the yearning, the words he keeps locked up too tightly for far too long... I felt like I wanted to cry for him so many times.
I'm really rooting for Rahul and Julian to get together. I can't wait to read the next book. I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!!!!
Aside from that, the novel is extremely well written. It's got a good structure, great pacing, excellent flow, and I actually thought the author was British because the dialogue and narration were so on point.
Overall, a very enjoyable read. I definitely recommend it, and I'm looking forward to more from this author!
You know what this book has: HEART! And Humour! And Heat! Boy this was a joy a read, did not put it down. So much packed into this first instalment of this series. Do not expect closure at the end but trust me you’ll be happy you read it. And the next book is gonna be out in a month or two so it’s fine I’m fine we’ll be fine!!
This is not a typical story in any way shape or form - entire unexpected keeping you on your toes with multiple POVs it does not let you settle into a feeling about a character or allow you to get them to conform to what you expect they would reveal. It’s fresh and fascinating
I enjoyed all the characters and I’m dying to hear from Julian. I am wary about Michale - what is going on there I can’t get a read and I’m not convinced with Rahul, that boy needs to grow a little bit or a lot and I (begrudgingly ) love Aisling, and Mel, how fascinating something there as well.
I am so curious about all these characters I need to know everything
Expect London in the 80s bit of a sexual reconciliation witty sharp writing great plot developing relationships bit of a cliffie
ARC Review (and thank you so much for the ARC!). Okay, not sure how to discuss this one since I don’t want to spoil it since I think everyone should just go in blind and experience it for themselves because wow. The relationships in this are, beyond codependent and a bit toxic at times and complicated. My heart breaks for Rahul, he loves so deeply and just sits there, alone waiting, miserable. I was screaming at him to just move on and live his life. Julian is at best clueless at worst a user and selfish, he’s flighty and definitely himself and uninhibited and draws others to him. And then there’s Michael. Who I can only describe ss a mix of Dexter and Joe from You. I was worried for peoples lives with him around! There’s a certain sociopathic darkness there, some pick up on it, like Rahul, others don’t, like Julian. This really reads like it’s a first season of a tv show, we leave off with a cliffhanger but it’s not unsatisfying BUT I need to know what’s going to happen with Rahul. I need to know that he’s going to get his life together, I’m really rooting for him. This story really makes you invested in these characters lives, and the setting of 80s London is so much fun. I can’t wait for the next instalment.
