Bad decision #1: Inviting myself on a road trip with the elf who has a crush on me. Bad decision #2: Actually going...

Listen, I feel bad for Nicky, I really do. I can’t imagine what it must be like when the embodiment of your waking nightmare moves into the house you’ve been living in. But sympathy doesn’t mean he can stay at my place. Having him under my roof would just remind me of what he once offered me. Sure, technically he’s older than I am, but he comes across as so freaking innocent, I can’t see him as an adult. One of us would end up getting hurt, and it won’t be me.

So when his best friend Jackson suggests a road trip, I practically shove Nicky into the car. It’s just, neither one of them has spent any time on their own among humans. What will they do if they get stopped by the highway patrol? Who’s gonna show them how to make a hotel reservation?

No, they’ll be fine. Heck, Jackson can open any lock, and Nicky doesn’t even know the extent of his abilities. They’ll figure out how to get out of trouble on their own. It’ll be a growing experience.

Unless they run into someone who wants to take advantage of them. They’re both so trusting, especially Nicky. And not all of the people trafficking in paranormal creatures have been found yet.

Ugh, fine. I’ll go. But it doesn’t mean anything. I’m getting my own room. Nicky can bunk with Jackson. I’m just along as a sort of chaperone—I mean, a guide. A mentor, if you will.

It’ll be fine.

About the author

Bix Barrow

When Bix Barrow got an idea for her first book, it ended up turning into her second — and thus the first two stories in the Bent Oak, Texas series emerged. An aspiring author for most of her life, it took a foray into the MM romance genre to spark the steamy scenes and blazing banter Bix now weaves into her novels. Accompanying her on her writing exploits are her two dogs and multitude of cats (six at last count). An avid traveler, Bix has started to view her expeditions as interviews for her future home. Born and raised in Texas, she is eager to move somewhere with fewer politicians, hurricanes and flooding.
