LONG read. About 50 hours, but I absolutely loved the show and knew the novel was a little different. It starts out very similar, just a few things out of order, but by the end and all the extra scenes it was quite different. I really enjoyed the extra chapters in the novel. I didn’t like how they did the extra ending in the show.
I think the novel would have confused me many times if I hadn’t already watched the show with how it would change scenes and who is talking without any notice.
The show added a few key elements that I thought were genius. Having the troublemakers in Changyu’s hometown become her little posse? Loved that addition.
The demeanor of Xie Zheng was softer when it came to Changyu, yet also kept the militant leader side as well. In the novel I think he was a big harsher towards her.
In the show she was by his side when he got whipped, not in the novel. (And who did it was also different). The side stories of the Princess and also of Qi Meng were at the end as extra chapters. I loved the bad guy in the show (Qi Meng), he did so well on his character, he wasn’t as prominent in the novel.
The whole reason Changyu and Xie Zheng couldn’t be together was explained differently in both adaptations. The novel did a better job of Changyu trying to set out on her own and “earn” valor that rivaled his so she felt she was worthy of him and him of her. The show didn’t have that dynamic.
There really was so much more, I should have taken notes, but it took me almost a month to get through only because it was so long. I loved reading it.

This story truly was magical, I couldn’t get enough. Would highly recommend if you can get your hands on it.

If you are a fan of the drama, this story is worth a read. Of course there are some differences but I love all the bts details and especially enjoyed the multiple epilogues.

Karakter utama sangat kuat.

I loved the drama adaptation of Pursuit of Jade, so naturally I immediately went looking for the translated version and downloaded it to my Kindle. And somehow, 180 chapters and 2,738 pages later… I have no regrets.
This was actually my first book by a Chinese author AND my first translated book, and what an introduction. I absolutely loved this story and these characters, and I already know I’m going to miss them so much.
That being said… I have ONE complaint. During the intimate scenes, why did they suddenly decide it was the perfect time to discuss the ongoing war?! Like, please. We are in the middle of a moment here. Why are we talking about fighting and politics?! And yes, I understand that the family backgrounds and all the political details are important to the story, but sometimes I was just sitting there like… KISS THEM ALREADY.
And Xie Zheng… sir. You are a maroon flag. Not red, not green. MAROON. Because why are we refusing to use our words and instead torturing your wife intimately because you’re jealous?! Please seek communication skills immediately.
Would I read this book again? Absolutely. But I’m not going to lie, I would probably just reread all the chapters where my main couple is actually together.

The book and the drama were both so good, and I’m genuinely so glad I decided to read the novel after watching the adaptation. Now I have a whole TBR waiting for me, but I fear none of them are going to make me feel the way this one did. 🥹

**180 chapters. 2,738 pages. No regrets.**

I could not get over the C-drama that I decided to give this series a go. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Despite the translation being somewhat stilted in some places—a few awkward phrasings, inconsistency in people’s names and titles, etc.—it was still a worthy read. Of course, the drama strayed a bit from the original series, and even though I wished those changes weren’t made, one change I was glad was made was Xie Zheng’s character. Yes, he was a boy starved of love. Yes, he only knew violence and blood. But the author’s depiction of his physical manifestation of “affection” for Changyu was just a bit too much that I would brace myself and go “Not again, poor girl” before reading.

I personally enjoyed the bonus chapters telling the story of Gongsun Yin and the Grand Princess Qi Shu. It was an adorable, agonizing, and ultimately tender marriage of minds. I love them.

I absolutely loved the show so I really wanted to read the book and compare. This was a LONG read, but very insightful for the plot as that really confused me in the drama. The show adheres to a lot of the book, even for some small details, but there are things that were done differently in the drama compared to the book such as the pig-slaughter squad, Changyu's road to fame as a general, and the Meng family background. Changyu's journey to becoming a general is thoroughly explained and shown in the novel and we get to see how she earned her fame and reputation by rising in the ranks. The show unfortunately glosses over most of that. However, I appreciated both the book and show versions of the story because they each were equally well done in their own way, which is very rare for me to find the screen adaptation as good as the book. The one area that I felt the show portrayed better than the book was Xie Zheng's character - for me, he was a giant red flag in the novel. He would have such thoughtful and romantic lines but then turn around and bite Changyu nonstop and some of his behavior felt borderline assaultive/abusive, as well as his intense possessiveness and jealousy. It just left me feeling icky. We do see some elements of jealousy and possessiveness in the show but nothing to the extent of the book so they clean him up very nicely in the drama. Still an overall fun and entertaining read and the extra epilogue chapters were a nice addition to the story, although I did skip the last few out of lack of interest in the alternate storyline.

FINALLY FINISHED THIS
I obviously read it because of the series, and it was very nice to relive this story in a different format. However, that might have been an issue too, because I kept comparing the two and I definitely prefer the series.
I feel like the book is always focused on the story of the two main characters, while the series does a great job at mixing a lot of storylines together and making them engaging; at times the book felt slow.
But regardless I enjoyed it, I think it is a great story and I love Fan Changyu and Xie Zheng.
The extra stuff not shown in the series was very interesting to read, specially the AU in which they are childhood sweethearts 😭 I'm sure they will find each other in every universe 💞

I read this book after watching the drama, and it cleared a lot of the doubts I had.
Also, thanks to the drama, it was easier to distinguish the characters (way too many with similar names), and to understand the change of scenery.

As for the main characters, I am not sure their actions always make sense.
I also found the book quite unemotional, and with no depth in the characters. The drama was much better for this.
The Marquis is quite rough also when dealing with the woman he loves, and I am not sure I like it as it feels a little bit too much.

I read this after watching and loving the C-drama first. And i also love this book. I read this in a week, at night and in-between work, despite the thousands of pages. The storyline really compelling, all the characters are complex even the villains (you really can't hate them), and although the politics are pretty complicated but still explained meticulously. What sets this book apart by far is the side stories and extra chapters at the end of the book. I never would have thought the author would elaborate the story and the characters even further. And i really like it even more.

It has been a while for me reading chinese novel. I read this novel after watching the chinese drama version titled “Pursuit Jade”.

There are different parts between novel and drama. I a bit prefer drama for story line, even though the novel described some events clearly than in the drama. While for emotions, expressions, and characters I prefer the novel version.
