Working For Her Sweet Treats: Hard Hat Hotties

Rate this book
Ava Bennett came to Forge Creek for a fresh start … not a daily delivery of muddy footprints. After a painful divorce, she pours her savings, pride, and every waking hour into Sweet Treats Bakery. Making it succeed is more than a dream. It is proof that she can build a happy life entirely on her own. Then Jake Dalton becomes her first customer every morning. The broad-shouldered contractor is quiet, maddeningly observant, and far too comfortable pointing out everything in her historic bakery that needs fixing. He tracks dirt across her clean floors, eats enough muffins to qualify as a business expense, and keeps helping whether Ava wants him to or not. Jake knows how to restore almost anything. Old buildings. Broken pipes. Crooked shelves. Winning over one stubborn, flour-covered bakery owner may be his toughest project yet. When a huge opportunity puts Sweet Treats in front of half the town, Ava reluctantly accepts Jake’s help. Between caramel apple muffins, a ridiculous pink apron, and one very inconvenient mishap inside the walk-in cooler, irritation turns into laughter. And laughter turns into kisses neither of them can blame on the cold. But Jake believes love means seeing a problem and fixing it. Ava has already survived one man who mistook taking control for taking care of her. To build something lasting, Jake must learn to listen before he reaches for his tools. And Ava must decide whether accepting help means surrendering her independence or finally trusting the right man to stand beside her. Working for Her Sweet Treats is a steamy small-town romantic comedy featuring a curvy bakery owner, a hardworking contractor with a serious sweet tooth, enemies-to-lovers sparks, forced proximity, muddy boots, cinnamon rolls, and a perfectly imperfect happily ever after. The blue collar heroes of Forge Creek, Colorado work hard, play harder, and fall fastest of all. From carpenters and welders to foremen and heavy equipment operators, these hardworking heartthrobs aren’t afraid to get dirty—or to claim the women who knock them off their feet. Hard Hat Hotties is a series of short, steamy, happily-ever-afters where every man has a toolbelt, a rough touch, and a soft spot for the one woman meant to be his.Join 12 of your favorite (or soon to be favorite) authors for a brand new, swoon-worthy, steamy series!

Jake restores more than buildings.

Told in dual POV this is another great read by Opal Nicks. Our hero Jake Dalton is the perfect combination of strength and compassion. The heroine, Ava, is intelligent and full of gumption. After a divorce she opens Sweet Treats Bakery and is determined to enter and live her next phase of life under her own rules. Although they clash after the meet cute, they grow to become each other's person. He learns to be patient, allows Ava to make choices that are right for her, and only does what Ava tells him to do. Ava learns to allow Jake to help.

IMO, Ms. Nicks writes intelligent banter like no one else and Working for Her Sweet Treats will keep you entertained. This is the second book written by her that I have read and I devoured every word. I couldn’t put it down until I finished the story. I enjoy reading the behind the scenes that she writes on Goodreads; it adds another layer of connection to the story for me.

Jake and Ava

It’s safe.
She’s a divorced baker that opened her bakery some days ago. He owns a construction company.
He was previously in a serious relationship that ended not great. So, no virgins here.

I didn’t like her being so defensive every time he wanted to help her. It felt like she wanted to change him. One thing is him learning to listen rather than stomping over her and doing stuff. Other thing is him being capable of making things safer and easier for her but she’s so stubborn that stops him every time. It was frustrating.
Yes, I get that she has a scar with how her husband treated her. But, it was too much. She needed the help but refused it. He was not her ex.
Idk, it felt like she was holding him back. Changing him. He had to ask for everything.

It’s an okay read. I think it’s my first book by this author.

Who would not enjoy reading about a bakery full of wonderful pastries and a sexy construction owner? Ava came to Forge Creek to open her bakery and the first customer is Jake. The tall good-looking hunk has an eye on what needs his attention and that attention is Ava. When Jake points out some things that need fixing, Ava starts to feel her bitter past come knocking. Will her fearfulness of losing her independence come between them when the only thing Jake wants to do is help? This story was well-written sprinkled with plenty of humorous banter throughout and wonderful characters. The story of Ava, Jake and Loralee is entertaining from beginning to end. Highly recommend.

Behind the Scenes of Working for Her Sweet Treats

Some stories begin with a dramatic plot twist or a complicated character secret. Working for Her Sweet Treats began with muddy work boots crossing a freshly cleaned bakery floor.

Once I pictured Ava Bennett standing behind the counter of her new bakery while a large, hot construction contractor unknowingly left a trail of dirt behind him, their personalities began taking shape almost immediately.

Ava has come to Forge Creek determined to begin again. After a disappointing divorce, she has invested her money, her energy, and a tremendous amount of hope in Sweet Treats Bakery. The bakery is housed in a historic building that was once home to the town’s original bakery, making it the perfect symbol for what Ava is trying to do with her own life: preserve the worthwhile parts, repair what has been damaged, and create something new.

She is independent, creative, hardworking, and more than a little particular. Everything inside Sweet Treats has a place. Every pastry must meet her standards. Every coffee flavor is chosen carefully. And every pair of muddy boots should be wiped before entering. Unfortunately, Jake Dalton does not always receive that message.

Jake owns Dalton Restoration & Construction, one of the companies helping bring Forge Creek’s aging buildings back to life. He is observant, practical, dependable, and unable to enter any building without noticing at least three things that need fixing. That trait serves him extremely well in his professional life. It becomes slightly more complicated when he begins visiting Sweet Treats every morning.

Jake is not a man who gives grand speeches or makes sweeping promises. He shows people he cares by doing things. He repairs what is broken, carries what is too heavy, and takes care of problems before anyone else notices them. He also has a serious sweet tooth.

Ava quickly discovers that Jake’s claim that one of his cinnamon rolls is “for someone else” should never be trusted. His imaginary recipient rarely receives a single crumb.

Jake initially believes he keeps returning because Ava makes excellent coffee, caramel apple muffins, and cinnamon rolls. Readers may reach a different conclusion before he does.

Food became much more than background decoration in this story. Ava features a rotating Muffin of the Week at Sweet Treats, beginning with Caramel Apple Muffins. Other bakery flavors appearing throughout the book include Lemon-Blueberry, Strawberry Cream Cheese, and Apple Crisp Cheesecake. Each one helped me create the warm, cinnamon-scented atmosphere I wanted for Sweet Treats.

The coffee menu also developed a personality of its own, with flavors such as Chocolate-Hazelnut, Maple Cinnamon, Orange Cinnamon, and Pumpkin Spice.

Then Jake inspired a cinnamon roll created especially for him. I will not reveal exactly how that happens, but I can tell you its name: The Dalton. It is a Bourbon Maple Bacon Cinnamon Roll. Yes, it is every bit as indulgent as it sounds.

The food became such an enjoyable part of Ava and Jake’s world that I decided a normal bonus epilogue was not enough. Readers will be able to claim a free digital Sweet Treats cookbook containing the featured muffin, cinnamon roll, and flavored-coffee recipes.

The recipes come with practical bakery notes from Ava and a little extra cosmic kitchen guidance from Loralee. Because Loralee would never allow a cookbook to rely on measurements and oven temperatures alone.

Loralee works part-time at Sweet Treats, although “works” may occasionally be a generous description.

She is still figuring out how to use her unusual talents to navigate the world. She reads tarot cards, studies astrology, interprets energy, and offers unsolicited spiritual observations while Ava is attempting to operate a perfectly respectable bakery.

Loralee is not the center of this story, but she became one of those side characters who adds just enough unpredictability to every scene she enters. At one point, she explains Ava’s personality to Jake with complete confidence:

“She’s a Virgo. She just can’t help it.”

Jake’s response tells us almost everything we need to know about his growing feelings:

“Whatever she is, I like it.”

Loralee also contributed several special features to the Sweet Treats cookbook, including Cosmic Kitchen Notes, a pastry horoscope, and Emergency Baking Tarot.

Ava would like readers to understand that tarot cards are not an approved method for selecting oven temperatures.

Although this story is definitely a romantic comedy, I wanted Ava and Jake’s conflict to grow from something emotionally recognizable.

Ava’s former marriage left her wary of men who make decisions for her and call it helping. She needs to know that she can build a successful life without someone else taking control of it.

Jake, however, expresses affection through action. If he sees something broken, unsafe, or difficult, his instinct is to handle it. He does not believe Ava is incapable.

Ava does not initially know how to tell the difference. That creates the emotional question beneath the muddy boots, muffins, and bakery banter: Can someone help us without diminishing us? And can accepting that help be an act of strength rather than surrender?

Jake must learn that love is not always identifying the problem and arriving with the correct tools. Sometimes it means listening, asking what someone needs, and trusting her to make her own decision.

Ava must learn that not every man who notices her struggles wants to control her life. The right one may simply want a place beside her while she builds it.

Working for Her Sweet Treats is set in Forge Creek, Colorado, a hardworking small town in the middle of a long-overdue revival.

Old factories are becoming workshops and storefronts. Historic buildings stand beside new construction. The air carries traces of fresh-cut lumber, coffee, and the occasional grease-stained work jacket.

It is a town filled with people who understand that worthwhile things are rarely flawless.

Sometimes the uneven boards, old scars, repaired bricks, and imperfect edges are what give something its character.

That idea became especially important to Ava and Jake’s story. Jake may always notice the things that need fixing. But Ava needs a man who can look at her and see someone worth choosing exactly as she is.

I hope readers enjoy stepping into Sweet Treats, meeting the people of Forge Creek, and spending time with a stubborn bakery owner and the quiet contractor who keeps returning every morning.

Perhaps for the muffins. But probably not.

Enjoy the scents, flavor, funny banter and shenanigans,

Opal Nicks

She built a new life. He keeps finding cracks she refuses to show.

Ava pours everything into Sweet Treats, determined to prove her divorce doesn't define her. She doesn't need rescuing, especially not by the quiet contractor who tracks mud across her clean floors and keeps showing up before sunrise.

Jake solves problems for a living. Buildings don't intimidate him. Ava does. She questions his help and makes him want more than pastries and arguments. Their attraction grows through teasing, quiet devotion, and undeniable chemistry.

But when Jake crosses a boundary because he believes he's protecting her, Ava is forced to confront old wounds that blur the line between care and control. They must decide whether trust is built by fixing problems or listening when the answer isn't what they wanted.

When a crisis threatens Ava's biggest opportunity, asking Jake to stand beside her becomes the hardest choice of all. He learns that love isn't about taking charge. It's about patience, respect, and honoring choices that aren't his to make.

Ava learns that accepting support doesn't mean surrendering her independence, while Jake discovers that listening matters as much as solving problems. Together they grow from playful rivals into partners who choose honesty, respect, and trust as the foundation for a love that's just as powerful emotionally as it is physically.

A hot small town, opposites attract romance filled with playful rivalry, acts of service, slow-burn attraction, emotional healing, and hard-earned trust. It explores independence, vulnerability, communication, boundaries, ambition, forgiveness, and the courage to let someone stand beside you without losing yourself. It's about choosing partnership over control, learning that love begins with listening, and discovering that the strongest foundations are built together, one choice at a time. ‍

The Elevator Pitch: A determined bakery owner and a quietly protective contractor clash over muddy boots, broken fixtures, and the meaning of real support as undeniable attraction grows between them. When old wounds and crossed boundaries threaten to destroy the trust they've only just begun to build, they must decide whether love can exist without sacrificing independence. Set in a close-knit small town, this romance blends sharp banter, heartfelt vulnerability, and undeniable chemistry into a story about choosing partnership without losing yourself.

This book is part of a multi author series called Hard Hat Hotties. Tropes: divorced FMC, bakery owner, small town, and construction owner. Ava just opened her bakery ( a dream she had for a long time) after her divorce. Jake is a construction company owner who always feels the need to fix things when he sees a problem. I liked the main characters and also the side characters especially Lorelei. An enjoyable read about two people trying to work together in a relationship instead of deciding things for each other.

This was a fab opposites attract romance and I loved seeing Ava learn that love is not about control, it's a partnership. She's had a lousy divorce and has poured everything into her new bakery. Hence her irritation with Jake and his muddy boots, day in and day out ;) Jake is more than ready to show her that he's ready to be her man for the long haul. Expect to get caught up in the building of trust, understanding, communication, courage, emotions and love as you follow these two to their HEA. I loved Jake's acts of service and the witty banter between them, making this an engaging page turner for me :D

The Baker gets her Builder ♥️

Sexual tension and banter from the first page of this awesome read. Ava is the new Baker in town who immediately catches the eye of Jake, local contractor and together the are the imperfect perfect couple. As they prepare for a upcoming community Forge Creek Renewal Celebration, they both learn how to mesh their lives and compromise, while Loralee is comic relief and steadfast friend for the ages.

Ava is a very independent woman her last relationship taught her to be that way. Dalton is a man who when he sees something needs to be fixed he steps in and takes care of it. It takes everything in him to let Ava lead with what can be done, but the rewards far out weigh the need to fix everything. Especially when it comes to her baking. I enjoyed the push- pull between this couple. You can't help but laugh at the humour all the way through. I enjoyed this story full of entertainment and romance you can't ask for more.

Ava is a newly divorced bakery owner determined to rebuild her life. Jake is a contractor who becomes her first customer every morning. Ava’s bakery, Sweet Treats, is her fresh start and her proof that she can stand on her own. Jake’s constant presence—tracking mud across her floors, eating muffins like a man on a mission, and pointing out every crooked shelf—initially feels like an intrusion. But his quiet protectiveness and genuine desire to help slowly shift irritation into something warmer. They are so good together!

The Dalton

Ava wants to run her bakery her way, with no input from Jake. He knows building and thus knows what needs fixing, but she wants control.
Don't read this on an empty stomach the muffins sound so good.
