Heath is a former police officer who transitioned into national security before becoming a first-time author - something he’s still very much figuring out. Drawing on his life and professional experience, he brings a grounded, pragmatic perspective to his fantasy writing, often sprinkled with Tarantino-style grit and 80s/90s action movie energy.
He is also an avid metalhead, though he grew up on punk and classic rock. He enjoys just about all music, with the notable exception of jam bands and Dave Matthews. A fantasy nerd at heart, he plays and DM’s multiple Dungeons & Dragons campaigns (which his wife insists was not disclosed before they were married). When he’s not working his real job, he’s usually writing, whether he should be or not, or spending time reading, drawing, golfing, and being with his wife, daughters, and their two dogs.
An Alternative to Freedom is a dark fantasy that follows a group of characters incarcerated in a brutal prison, gradually exploring their backstories as the narrative unfolds. In the author's foreword, he acknowledges that the book is loosely based on his Dungeons & Dragons campaign, and that proves to be one of the novel's greatest strengths. Each character feels lived-in and authentic, bringing a sense of history and personality that shines through the pages.
The world the author has built is diverse and imaginative, existing at an intriguing intersection of arcane magic and emerging technology. The political forces that have waylaid many of the characters feel believable, while hints of a cosmic conflict suggest a larger story waits beyond the veil of the novel.
The book attempts to cover a great deal within its modest length, and this perhaps is its greatest drawback. While each character is interesting, some receive significantly more attention than others. Readers will likely find themselves cheering for the unification of the characters just as the story draws to a close and be left wanting more.
In this way, An Alternative to Freedom feels like a successful opening act. It establishes an engaging cast, introduces a compelling world, and clears the path for future adventures in a highly readable and entertaining fashion.
As a huge fan of the fantasy genre, especially high fantasy and dark fantasy, this book was a pleasant read and a wild ride. The settings, characters, and plot itself at times all appear to be influence by heavy metal and rock music (which is a HUGE plus for me). You can tell that Murray is inspired by heavy metal music and imagery, and that he carefully displays this inspiration throughout the book. There is also a blend of Cohen Brothers and Tarantino elements as well.
The Black Rock prision is an unforgettable setting - filled with characters both memorable and charming. We're dropped into this new world and Murray has crafted, and throughout the story the layers are peeled back - revealing how the world works (the military, politics, magic, society, etc).
This is a very introspective book at times for author Heath Murray as well. You quickly get a peak inside the author's mind - noticing certain topics, philosophies, and humor that are important to him.
The book ended with me wanting to know what happens next, and I'm hoping for a sequel that will continue this epic journey!
For fans of dark fantasy, heavy metal, 80s and 90s action movies.
An Alternative to Freedom was a 5-star read for me. The characters were fantastic, the worldbuilding was detailed without feeling like an info-dump. The imagery was vivid, and the plot had enough twists to keep surprising me.
One thing I really appreciated was how the author worked the characters’ backstories into the story naturally. There aren’t long sections dedicated to explaining everything, so the book keeps moving at a great pace. It’s a quick, fun read with plenty of chaotic moments that kept me turning pages.
The characters are definitely the highlight. They are well-developed, and easy to get attached to. I think most readers will find at least one character to fall in love with.
The ending wraps up the main story while clearly setting up a larger series, which left me excited for what comes next. I’ll definitely be picking up the next book when it comes out.
An Alternative to Freedom was a really enjoyable read. The world-building was interesting, the characters felt distinct, and the story kept me wanting to know what would happen next. My favorite character was definitely the Bullet Witch. She stole every scene she was in and brought a unique energy to the story that I loved.
An excellent read, cover to cover, blending several different storylines together. The character development is excellent as well as the interactions between them. The movement around the timeline adds richness to the story of each of the characters. Looking forward to another installment in the series!
