My reviews are my own. If you enjoyed this book, I’m glad you did. If not, I respect your opinion, so please respect mine. This is simply my view, so let's keep it courteous. My review is honest and voluntary.
I enjoyed the slower pace of the first book because it worked well as an introduction to the world and its characters. Going into this installment, though, I expected the story to expand a bit more. I was hoping to see the characters travel in search of rare materials or take on more unique commissions. Instead, it felt like they were simply repeating the same formula as the first book and all he does is for that town and only that town. I enjoyed the Greyforge arrival and it is more of what I was expecting, collaborations and unique work that provides new learning opportunities. I also hope he doesn't start making weapons. What is the point of having a special "power" only to help ONE town. He didn't even offer tools for his own dad. I understand not using his craft to make others rich and using it to help people, but only people in that town? I will not work for a noble house either.
I also wasn't a fan of the impertinent kid who came to visit. I ended up skipping most of that section. I also found it odd that his entire family stayed at the apprentice's home. That didn't feel believable to me, especially given the apprentice's role. At times, it almost felt like "Bring Your Family to Work" would have been a more fitting title for this installment.
Another issue for me was the introduction of a romance innuendos. I would have preferred the apprentice to remain focused on learning his craft. Personally, I don't see the appeal of adding romance to crafting or adventure stories when it doesn't meaningfully contribute to the main plot. In this case, it felt more like a distraction than an enhancement.
Overall, I'm not sure if I want to continue the series. There were simply too many aspects of this book that didn't work for me. Don't get me wrong—the writing is still solid, and I can see why others might enjoy it. This installment just wasn't for me. I found it repetitive, predictable, and, ultimately, a bit boring.

A Slow Burn
This series is different. Not bad, just written in a particular style that once you understand and fall into rhythm with becomes something like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold morning. It fills you with warmth and leaves you wanting to savor more of it. Looking forward to seeing the story progress.

A lot more blacksmithing. I love Mara. Much more development of the system of Mana and Blacksmithing. More establishment of Intent. Book also had a lag in the middle. I appreciate the author taking their time with things, although a LOT seems to be happening rather quickly. I am really enjoying this series. I also love the Heron.

Quietly great.
Starts, slow, and steady. Like an expert fishermen setting the hook. Reals you in, the into the hole story (Like the bout). If you are looking for a relaxing book, look no further!

This book is well written. I enjoyed how it continued the first book without a full recap. I look forward to the next one.
