Wild Born #1
Wild in the Blood
“I’ve searched the world for you and now you’re here…and you hate me.”
Alpha Kole Maclay has searched for his mate his whole life, and now she’s here, right in front of him…and if looks could kill, he’d be one dead wolf.
Iona Murphy is a human with a broken, free spirit. Haunted by her past she travels the world keeping her demons at bay, until one day a mythical world collides with her own.
Kole will stop at nothing to keep her. Without his mate, his wolf will turn rabid and he will lose himself forever. If he falls, the rival pack testing his defences everyday will wipe out his entire family. He has no choice. Neither does she. He will keep her, claim her and she will fight him every step of the way.
Taken and held captive by creatures she thought were only legends, with a brutal mating ceremony looming and a council who believes Kole must leash her and have her kneeling at his feet to make her submit, Iona will stop at nothing to escape.
Bound together by the moon and circumstances, Iona and Kole are forced to look deeper to discover why they were chosen for each other, and most of all, to learn if Kole can fight his wolf long enough for his reluctant Luna to save him…

DNF at 37%. What is wrong with Kole? He is a fucking asshole. And after all he put her through she suddenly starts to be attracted to him? Fuck no. Mind you, this was just the beginning. I don’t want to know what other humiliations and suffering he will put her through. At the very least, he intends to rape her in front of his whole pack to claim her. I’m not sticking around to see if it happens, just him thinking about it makes him unredeemable. Ok, bye.

I'd never been a fan of werewolf romance until I discovered the little gem that His Reluctant Luna (the original title of Wild in the Blood) was on Radish a few years ago. And to be honest, I have yet to come across a better werewolf novel.
One of A.J. Rella's greatest strengths as an author is her ability to capture the actual nature of wolves. The wolf side of her characters is an integral part of who they are. Their instincts, their pack dynamics and their interactions are often grounded in real animal behavior (or at least in rules that are consistent with the novel's worldbuilding) instead of being reduced to a convenient excuse for writing controlling or abusive relationships.
Reading Wild in the Blood in its published form, I found myself reliving the same emotions I experienced during my first and the many subsequent reads while the story was being serialized. The anxiety. The hope. The anger. And, of course, the yearning between Iona and Kole.
Iona is a tough character: scarred, yet resilient and smart. She's also stubborn, reckless and arrogant. Not usually my favorite characteristics in a protagonist, but with the many hardships she faces, she definitely needs every one of those…
In this first installment, Kole is absolutely infuriating, though I know from experience that sticking with him will be worth enduring his worst moments. I love resenting him for everything he puts Iona through, and I love watching him wrestle with his own contradictions when it comes to her.
And I know I'll love experiencing their love story all over again.

I read this on Radish, it was known as His Reluctant Luna on there and it was testament to how much I enjoyed it that I persevered to read it to the end as Radish was not a fun app to use. I re-read twice over the years and have been waiting for it to be released properly so I can read again without all the hassle of the platform. It’s a gritty, gripping story that stands out in the wolf genre. There are a lot of less pleasant aspects to the story that honestly reflect human society, or what it would be if people could get away with it. But it’s also filled with complex relationships, female rage and a strong fmc that doesn’t just bend and forgive in an instant and fights for herself and those around her. The love is deep and hard won and that makes it all the more believable and valuable. I often find myself frustrated with how quickly fmcs forgive awful behaviour but that’s not the case here (and the mmc is well written enough that while you don’t agree with his actions, you do understand them). A fantastic read.

I’m always on the hunt for good paranormal romance but I like them rich with unique lore and a slow burn. This is AJ’s wheelhouse and she continuously blows my expectations right out of the water.
What begins as a classic tale of fated mates twists into something so much more deep, and Iona, our heroine, does not go easily! She is fiercely independent and bows to absolutely nobody despite being all alone and horrifically outnumbered by the Maclay pack. Kole, her mate, makes some questionable choices at the advice of his elders because as alpha, he needs his mate otherwise the entire pack will collapse.
This makes for much higher stakes than a run of the mill fated mates, and because the power struggle is so relatable from both sides it’s brutal! Rooting for both makes for a morally intense read.
WitB is a gorgeous first installment to this series and I can’t WAIT for the second one. I read the original run of this series when it was serializing and it is one of my very favourites. Super excited to see it polished and pretty and be able to hold it in my own two hands!

Hate Kole. Just endless suffering for Iona. I’m not familiar with this author or series, but having read some other reviews, well… I must say no redemption arc can save this man.
Sorry, but I have to say. I feel like I can already guess the next book, she discovers she has wolf blood or something due to her unknown genealogy and the blood transfusions Kole gives her, triggers her transformation into a werewolf. She suddenly is not as immune to the effects of the mate bond and falls in love with Kole?? Likely, conveniently forgetting all the trauma he put her through and threat to rape her?!?
Anyway. Yeah. Not my cup of tea.

I read this series while it was on Radish, and I can honestly say that it is the absolute best shifter series I have ever read, and I have read a ton!! I was hooked immediately, and couldn’t believe how invested I got in the lives of these fictitious characters. For me to say a book is really good, it has to give me all the feels, and this one did not disappoint! This author has a true gift when it comes to storytelling. Get ready to lose a lot of sleep as I guarantee it will be extremely hard to put these books down.

This has everything!
I devoured this book in a day when it came through my Kindle notifications. Without getting into spoilers, this story has everything. Iona is not any damsel in distress type of woman, she is strong, determined, brave and does not take smack from anyone. It's so refreshing to see such creativity in a genre that is full of repetitive storyline thropes. I can't wait for the next book, the end on this one kept me on the edge of my seat!

Revamped vs Original
I first read this story when it was on a reading App. It was captivating. I don't know if it was bcoz I read the original but this wasn't as good. I don't remember all the details of the first but I know this new version didn't captivate me. It's a great story line but if you read it online b4 then treat this as a new book with no expectations. I hope the next 2 are published bcoz I love the story and hopefully I will be able to read it as a new book.

I stayed up all night to read this cause it hooked me so good.
The synopsis? Yes please. Then as soon I started reading I was like yes I like this..
a FMC who takes no shit and stands her ground is such a vibe man..
Honestly this was a fun fated mated story in the sense I hadn’t read any like it before. The author gets props for originality and a well written story..
I’m frothing at the bits for the next book.. like need it immediately.
AJ save me from this wait. I beg.

Recommended by a friend, and I seriously could not appreciate her more for it. This was one of the best and most unique fantasy books I’ve read in a long time. It is definitely on the darker side with pretty much zero romance, so just go into it knowing that.
I genuinely could not put this book down and was irrationally annoyed every time real life interrupted my reading. And that cliffhanger?! Absolutely not. Give me book two immediately, please.
I have a feeling this is one of those books that’s eventually going to blow up and become a must-read recommendation for fantasy lovers. I’m just happy I got to it early.

A good start to the series
As far as shifter books are concerned I’d rate this a solid 5 stars. The MFC is fierce and independent in a believable way. It’s definitely a slow burn which I prefer over the insta love mate bond troupe. I wish I would have known about this book and read the original on Radish. I can’t wait for the next book to come out to see where this story goes.

Ive read this when it was on Radish. Let me tell you, you are up for a sleepless night because you will devour this book. Insane dynamics and AJ shows again: she is the QUEEN of redemption arcs. Read it and thank me later.

I don’t usually read romance or werewolves but it’s a must when AJ writes. And this I love. It’s a great story and very well written. It has adventure, carousel of emotions, great characters. It’s a joy to read, I love it! More, please!
