My education background is in Criminology and Psychology, but I’ve always had a love for literature. I grew up writing short stories and poetry. Hoo boy, I have things to say.
#1 This is NOT a romance. It's captor/captive, non/dubcon, Stockholm syndrome fic.
#2 I can root for a morally grey character, but Tobias isn't grey anything; he's a murderer and pure evil.
#3 Beyond my visceral revulsion to the narrative, I was scratching my head over the multiple inconsistencies and plot holes:
The story is set in Australia, but beyond the word "mate" being used a couple times, there is no sense of place. The characters talk like Americans, but only Cove is actually American.
Tobias is a multi-billionaire, like Jeff Bezos level of rich, but HOW? It's mentioned he comes from money, but then we're told he fell out with his parents (and his parents are still alive?), so how did the family fortune transfer to him?
We're also told he invented some apps. Um, okay? Inventing a few apps is not going to make you a billionaire. App bros become crazy rich by building massive companies (FB, Uber), but nothing was ever said about Tobias owning a company, only that he's a philanthropist.
Tobias has an assistant named Ben who doesn't seem to exist beyond the boundaries of Tobias's mansion. Where did Ben come from? Does he have family, friends, a partner? We don't know. Ben is so one-dimensional, he's basically a shadow.
Cove is from San Diego and in Australia on an internship. He has family and friends back home. So when Cove is kidnapped, shackled in a room, and forbidden from outside contact, why aren't his parents frantic and raising hell that their son has disappeared?
Also, Cove has his own flat. Did Tobias cancel his lease? Wouldn't his neighbors have noticed if Cove just stopped coming home and reported him missing? None of this is addressed.
The murders:
Final thoughts: I hated this book, but I can't entirely condemn it. The writing style was fine. The story was relatively well paced. I was horrified and disgusted, but not bored.
Just please know what you're getting yourself into!

Of all of E. Baileu's men, I think Tobias Kelly is my favorite one. What do you mean we have a billionaire who is a virgin, neurodivergent and is a service top that prefers toys before the actual thing? Might be my favorite kind of tops 🥵
Also, Ben was the perfect side character! He was very much needed to bring Cove and Tobias together, because without him, those two men would struggle baaaad at just talk to each other 🤣

ARC review:
I'm finding it difficult to explain how much I enjoyed this book. I was immediately intrigued from the teasing descriptions I came across on Instagram, as I'll read any novel with a sea creature theme. And if it's a MM romance--and it's dark--I am absolutely all in.
So I went into this excited to read it, yes. The most delicious thing is how much this book exceeded my expectations.
Cove is a young marine science graduate from California working his way through a coveted internship at an Australian aquarium. He's sweet, earnest, and incredibly in tune with aquatic animals, with a clear passion and enthusiasm that catches the eye of a mysterious philanthropist billionaire who keeps coming around more than a typical donor ever would.
Tobias is a seasoned collector of all kinds of rare and deadly marine creatures. He's a very guarded and formal neurodivergent man with awkward communication skills and a very dark and dangerous streak, but he knows what he wants and he gets it. And right now he wants Cove. He doesn't want to just get to know Cove, he yearns to acquire him. To understand every nuance of his behavior, his routines, his likes/dislikes, his needs, and his desires.
What follows is a story that inches along at a disciplined, measured pace that mirrors exactly the kind of trepidation and anticipation driving Tobias and Cove's relationship. This is an extremely slow burn. Or a slow drowning, with all the moments of fear, anger, desperation, struggle, emotional turmoil, confusion, and eventual acceptance, and then the final unraveling and passion that make the very best captive/captor dark romance stories so riveting.
I really couldn't put this book down. As a somewhat-slow reader I surprised myself with how badly I HAD TO keep going. I stayed up until 2am last night, with zero regrets--making this my fastest read of the year so far.
Here's what I really appreciated the most:
* Tobias' self-awareness, near-naivety about human relationships, and his very deliberate way of thinking and speaking about his interests and desires contrasted so well with his murderous nature lying in the shadows. I was wary of him right away, but I never could hate him. He's simply what he is, and he's true to his nature. Like a shark.
* Cove is quite smart and has his own quirks, but his heart and intentions are centered around intuition, built on his deep education and love of facts/knowledge. He is appropriately and believably uncomfortable, suspicious, and cautious around Tobias. He doesn't dive right in with Tobias' irresistible job offer. He tests the water, he observes, and he never assumes. As the story unfolds, all of his reactions and his decisions make sense.
* The author clearly researched aquariums and the care and maintenance of their inhabitants! I'm the kind of reader who loves glimpses of realism and real facts sprinkled into novels like this. I loved the conversation about jellyfish species/behaviors; the cuttlefish who responds to Cove's approach at the glass; the way the elusive and deadly ghost shark is described; and of course Puff Daddy.
* I felt uncomfortable at times. DEEPLY uncomfortable. And I loved it.
* A scene about halfway through changes the trajectory and the build of the employer/employee relationship in quite a dramatic way. And the slow, detailed, very drawn out scenes that follow were perfect. A lot of times in a story, those uneasy moments where a character feels like they might not survive get moved through quickly. Here, Baileu takes their time letting Cove feel every moment; and for Tobias to develop new tactics and strategies to try to salvage what he'd been working so hard to achieve.
* The spicy scenes only occur about 80% in, and I did have moments before that where I couldn't possibly fathom HOW we would ever get there. But we do. And it works really well for who each of them are as characters. The intimacy is framed in a believable way, in context of everything.
* Speaking of intimacy, as an ace person, my heart tugged at Tobias having absolutely NO experience (or interest in) s*x and being nearly bewildered by what he slowly learns through his research. There's a couple fun scenes that made me smirk based on his questions and observations.
* While I'm not personally big on the Daddy kink, I enjoyed the dynamic that developed from a tentative, exploratory spot to something more. I'd say it's about 3.5/5 chili peppers.
* This story is DARK. Things happen. And "it's important that you watch."
Overall:
A highly unpredictable, tense, suspenseful, and surprisingly emotional story, and definitely not one that fits neatly alongside a lot of other MM romances right now. And that's a beautiful thing! It stands out in its originality.
This was my first read by E. Baileu and I've immediately started stalking my next read of theirs. ;-)

Oh my god, this book 👀 I actually had to set it down a few times because I was so on edge in the best way.
I loved Cove so much! Tobias too obviously but I love how Cove was skeptical for a while. He didn’t just immediately fall for Tobias, he made Tobias work for it. And it wasn’t instalove/lust which I appreciated as well! Cove and Tobias’ love was gradual, a thing neither of them truly realized was happening until it did. Tobias was so funny to me especially with his no nonsense approach. He wasn’t watching porn, he was researching 😂
Also, Ben!!! Top TIER side character! Like I love that there was no judgment, he just supported Tobias the way Tobias needed. I actually totally forgot about the Daddy kink & my jaw dropped the first time Cove used it because it just fit. Like I couldn’t explain that other than just know it fits these two. I wish there had been more!! I could’ve read another 300 pages of them.

my first ever ARC review and i'm so stoked it was this book because i was so intrigued by it!!!
this was a genuinely good, exciting, engaging read. i started the book and could not put it down, i was glued to my kindle.
first of all, the setting. i have never read a romance set around aquariums before, not when they're so woven into the narrative and so deeply tied to the characters. all that glass, water and shifting blue light created a feeling that was both eerie and peaceful, and it gave the whole story this quiet, almost otherworldly atmosphere that made everything feel soft and haunting. not to mention how interesting it was to learn about all the sea creatures mentioned! the conversations around them felt very natural, they helped flesh out cove's character instead of coming across like dumps of information shoehorned in there. and all of it helped me to discover a new favourite animal, the dumbo octopus, the yellow ones specifically, they're so adorable go look them up!!
now the story and characters. honestly, i think i was expecting this to be much darker. i guess that's the impression i got from all the snippets and teasers i'd seen, so i was surprised (but not unpleasantly so!!!) to find that it wasn't. not exactly. like tobias was an honest to god SOFTIE. like hello?? the whole book i was melting at how sweet and bumbling he was, he tried so hard to do and make everything right for cove, it was so incredibly charming to read. i guess i was expecting him to be more callous, and in some way he definitely was, but what really stood out to me, and what i loved, was his genuine desire to learn and understand every little thing about cove, about who he was, how he moved through the world, what he liked and disliked, what made him comfortable, and the committed, unwavering effort and care he put into it. he was the standout character for me, i like him so much <33
cove was a total sweetheart. i also expected him to be different, more aloof, cold, more resistant to tobias, if not downright averse, but what he actually turned out to be was a sensitive, reserved young man, shy and unsure of himself, who's trying to find his place in a complicated world. i found myself relating to him more than once, and i felt his distress and pain like it was my own, the poor darling thing. had me shed a few tears too. but i also loved how he also had spunk to him, he wasn't just some passive quiet puppet, he could be firm in his choices and his boundaries (until tobias reshapes them for him heheh)
now the pacing is the reason why i'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. the majority of this book was slow going, but not in a dragging way, it did a frankly amazing job at setting up and shaping the relationship between cove and tobias, letting it develop in a gradual, believable way. that was exactly what i was appreciating the most, how it took its time with it, how carefully it was done. honestly it's not something you see often. but then from the 84% mark (yes i'm being that specific), after the first sex scene, it felt like a switch got flipped, everything started happening so fast and, regrettably, mostly off page. the transition from captor/captive to lovers was incredibly rushed when that was exactly when that earlier carefulness was needed the most. after all that build-up, it all ended up being so sudden, it genuinely felt confusing because the difference from the pacing up until that point was so stark. cove said "i love you" to tobias (tobias's reaction was aaaagghhhh <333 he cried because he hadn't even dared to hope???) and i was like, but how and when and howw? i needed more to believe it. and then the book ended right after that, not even an epilogue to tie things together, at least a bit. that last stretch honestly deserved at least 100+ pages more and i would have been there for it! so hard!!
two more things that didn't work for me because felt a bit like they came out of nowhere: first, the daddy kink. i thought it was going to be part of tobias's seduction plan, given that to me it seemed like there had been some hinting at cove having an underlying need for that kind of guidance and care, so i assumed tobias was going to lean into that. but instead cove calls him daddy during the first sex scene out of the blue and that's immediately followed by "i never had a daddy kink but i guess there's a time for everything" as explanation .... umm... okay. i was confused and disappointed ngl
second, tobias calling cove "little siren". listen i love that petname but that too felt so out of nowhere, he just randomly started calling him that and i was like, okay but why exactly? that's a pretty specific petname so there's gotta be some reason behind it. there were a couple mentions of cove's "call"/ him "calling to tobias" but it wasn't enough imo it could have been explored/developed better. now "precious" on the other hand i could believe and i loved it so much! melted every time tobias said it.
sooo basically i really really really enjoyed this book, it was a good book and i do recommend it, but but it's not without its issues sadly and that's why i'm rating it 4 stars, which is still a high rating but it really could have been perfect!

second, tobias calling cove "little siren". listen i love that petname but that too felt so out of nowhere, he just randomly started calling him that and i was like, okay but why exactly? that's a pretty specific petname so there's gotta be some reason behind it. there were a couple mentions of cove's "call"/ him "calling to tobias" but it wasn't enough imo it could have been explored/developed better. now "precious" on the other hand i could believe and i loved it so much! melted every time tobias said it.
sooo basically i really really really enjoyed this book, it was a good book and i do recommend it, but but it's not without its issues sadly and that's why i'm rating it 4 stars, which is still a high rating but it really could have been perfect!

Cove knows something isn't quite right about Tobias's interest in him, yet calling attention to it could jeopardize everything he's worked for. That uncertainty creates a constant sense of anticipation that kept me turning pages late into the night.
What impressed me most was how carefully the relationship develops. There is no instant attraction or rushed romance. Instead, the story unfolds at a deliberate pace, allowing every interaction to build upon the last. Cove remains cautious and skeptical, forcing Tobias to earn every bit of trust he gains. It was absolutely beautiful, which is odd considering it's a book where a main MC is kidnapped and held against his will. Yet, here we are.
I'm from San Diego and grew up with Sea World, coves filled with crystals, and the Birch. I could understand what Cove saw when he looked up and saw the calm, glowing blue water - how it would hypnotize him and keep him rooted there, staring. I would have lived in the ocean if I could have - I was down at the beach every single day and nothing could keep me away. I even went to school to study underwater archaeology because I absolutely loved being in the ocean and seeing how each body of water would help preserve these tragedies or erase them quickly was so fascinating. So, to me, this book was perfection and I'm sad I can't read it for the first time again.
Seeing Tobias shift from wanting Cove near him, to always be around him, to wanting him was glorious. I absolutely love a possessive and obsessive MC and Tobias gave us that in spades. Seeing how Cove slowly learned that Tobias really saw him, actually saw him and cared about his thoughts and input was so damn precious. Heh. Precious.
When the author said this book was a slow burn, I was expecting a slow burn but holy hell I was not expecting this. But, with how they're forced together, it makes sense and I understand why they weren't together in chapter 2. How they were both tortured with how it came to be, Cove with fearing for his life and his trust completely destroyed and Tobias with knowing things would never be the same. Showing each and every day was absolutely necessary as you see Cove go through so much pain and anger, so skipping over it or making the days pass too quickly would make it all come together too easily. We needed to see him furious and broken because he trusted Tobias. He was happy with his work, with finding someone who saw him and trusted him to care for his entire collection. How he never doubted Cove's ability, would instantly get Cove the materials he needed to improve the quality of life for his collection, and then to see it get all ripped away? We NEEDED that betrayal in slow motion so when they did finally come together, it wasn't confusing, jarring and completely unbelievable.
The tension when they FINALLY noticed each other was UNFFF. I loved each moment of hating how much Cove missed Tobias as soon as he was gone, how he would slowly inch closer, would greedily accept each tidbit Tobias offered about himself and when Tobias finally offered him pleasure? Only Cove's pleasure? Oh hell yeah, I was READY FOR IT. Seeing Tobias learn every part of Cove's body and keeping himself out of it was perfection, because we start to see Cove yearn to be closer and crave him. Little Siren though? FUCK ME UP E. I LOVED that pet name and it was so fitting. I know sounding rods are not for everyone and that's cool but honestly? I LOVE seeing them in books so to see them being used here was just another check off my "holy shit this book is amazing," list. Them finally coming together on the beach was honestly just absolutely perfect and so them.
I was cackling when Ben caught Tobias watching porn in utter disgust. Poor Ben has SEEN some shit and honestly, I really hope he gets a book. I loved how quickly he became a friend to Cove and how much trust Tobias put in him with his entire existence. I want to hear him grumbling when Tobias took off after Cove, like "how dare this man frolic off happily while I carry this heavy body. AGAIN." I want to see how they became so close and how Ben came to work for him.
Regardless, reading this book early was an absolute gift. So, thank you E for allowing me to enjoy these two. This book was beautiful, inside and out. The cover is just... *stunning*

I am truly thankful for the ARC I was blessed to receive. It took me some time to get my thoughts in order because this book had me in a book coma.
There are no words that I can use to describe the way this book captured me. I have no way to convey the complexities of the writing itself much less the storyline. There were so many things "wrong" happening throughout the book but it was done so in a way that it snuck up on you. While reading this I constantly felt this low thrum of anxious energy and couldn't quite figure out why. Was it the way Tobias would just stand and observe Cove? Was it the way Cove described how he was feeling when he saw or initially interacted with Tobias? Was it the way the even those in the background of the story cautioned Cove? I want to say it was a combination of it all.
Then once you start to pinpoint the unease you're feeling, there is an explanation and information into the eccentricities of Tobias that calm you down as you realize that Tobias just isn't great with people. Still though my anxiety was thrumming through my veins but again I just kept dismissing it.
"I learned that sometimes he was simply trying very hard to exist in a world that expected people to communicate sideways, through tone and implication and social scripts I wasn’t always great at either."
One of the many things I enjoyed about this book was the fact that the author really did their research. The detail that was gone into about the multiple aquatic animals was fantastic and not at all overwhelming. It never had me questioning why the information was there. Cove tends to ramble especially because he is so passionate about Marine Biology so to have that information makes sense and also makes me extremely fascinated. Cove really starts to get comfortable in his role until something goes wrong. Now he is trying to find his way in this new dynamic. The relationship with Tobias is strained and he has realized how dangerous he truly is.
"That was probably dangerous, but not everything dangerous felt bad anymore. Some things were dangerous the way deep water was dangerous— beautiful, consuming, impossible to enter without understanding that it could change the shape of you if you stayed in it long enough. Tobias was like that. And I was learning, little by little, how to swim."
This book will have you all kinds of twisted up in knots and you have to be patient for the spice to come about but once it does you won't be disappointed. Honestly this has been one of my favorite books I have read this year.

This one is a 3.5 stars for me. I'd still recommend reading it at least once, especially if you love marine life, because the way it's described in this book is truly stunning. I actually learned quite a bit, which was a lovely surprise.
It's a dark MM romance centered around Cove, a marine biologist who joins an Australian aquarium as an intern, and Tobias, a billionaire philanthropist with a taste for collecting rare and dangerous marine creatures. This time, though, he's set his sights on Cove himself.
Tobias offers Cove a position at his private aquarium. Cove has this deep, almost obsessive love for water and marine life, so the moment he lays eyes on Tobias' collection, he's completely hooked and says yes without much hesitation.
From there, Tobias does everything he can to keep Cove close. He even goes as far as faking a security scare to stop Cove from taking a rideshare, arranging for his own secretary to pick him up instead. It's controlling, unsettling, and honestly, very on-brand for his character.
Things eventually come to a head when a single incident unravels every secret Tobias had been keeping. Cove's instinct is to run, understandably so, but Tobias responds by tying him up and holding him hostage. Yeah, it gets intense.
What I genuinely loved, though, was watching Tobias evolve throughout the story. He starts off treating Cove like something to be owned and possessed, but slowly, almost reluctantly, that shifts. He becomes softer, more vulnerable. He's attentive to Cove's comfort, his preferences, the little things. And when physical attraction enters the picture, something Tobias has never experienced before, it's entirely centered on Cove's pleasure, never his own. That arc was quietly beautiful to read.
What I struggled with was that Tobias crosses some lines without a shred of remorse. I don't mind morally grey characters at all, but this felt a shade or two darker than what I'm usually comfortable with.
Overall, it's a good book, and I do think some of those harder moments could have been written with a little less brutality. But that's purely my take, no judgment here.

Honestly, I thought this book would be much darker, but I’m so happy with this read and that it didn’t. The whole book i was smiling at how sweet Tobias was, he tried so hard to make everything right for cove. This book will have you wanting the best for Tobias and that is Cove!

There’s Something in the Water by E. Baileu was a story that drew me in from the first chapter. I was so intrigued by the idea of this man who observed and collected items, animals, and people. Tobias Kelly, aquarium donor and billionaire, is drawn to Cove the first time he meets him. He sees how Cove loves and respects the animals in the aquarium. He continues to observe and make inferences about who Cove is and how he will behave in situations. It was fascinating to be in his mind. Cove knew there was something slightly sinister about Tobias. He felt it–possibly his “lizard-brain” warning him that what he sees is not the full picture.
There is an interesting parallel in the predators in Tobias’ private aquarium and the way that Tobias “hunts” Cove in order to add him to his collection.
I was very intrigued by Ben, Tobias’ PA. Such a great side character that had a lot of hidden depth. The prose is very beautiful here. The way that the sea and ocean animals are described is quite lovely. There was also a slight sense of melancholy that permeated Cove’s chapters especially. The way that he would get lost in the ocean because it seemed to be one of the few areas that actually made sense to him. I really enjoyed it.

Cove moved half way around the world for an internship at an aquarium that he was hoping would turn into a kick off to an amazing new life. What he wasn't betting on was catching the eye of one of the aquariums biggest donors Tobias. When the aquarium ends up not offering him a permanent position Cove is feeling a bit hopeless but Tobias steps in and offers Cove a position at his private aquarium. After viewing the aquarium Cove very enthusiastically accepts the position. Tobias might have some ulterior motives but he trusts Cove's care and connections with the fish. Just when Cove and Tobias start building a foundation to what could be more Cove witnesses something he most definitely shouldn't have and ends up being held captive right along side those beautiful fish. Tobias wanted to keep Cove but not like this, so now he has to figure out a way to rebuild everything that was lost between the two of them and get Cove to realize that there may be alot Tobias would do to protect his privacy but hurting Cove isn't one of those things.
This is one of those stories that scrambles your brain a bit in just the best way! You don't even realize that your rooting for the serial Un-Aliver until your basically like "Just ignore the body Cove! Run to your man" 🤣 You really understand the internal dilemma Cove has with everything but you just root for Tobias so hard! This was an awesome kick off to this new series and I can't wait to see where we go and what cute deadly animals we see next!

You know these books that you’re just so invested in it’s hard for you to put down to adult, this was one of those for me.
I loved the dynamic at the centre of this book, Tobias, a philantropist stalker that is rich and contributs a lot to an aquarium and Cover, the aquarium worker that knowns he is being stalked but is scared to call it out cause he doesn’t wanna lose his job. It made it so interesting to read and I was very invested in seeing where things would go.
Everything about the atmosphere in this book worked for me, from the creepyness that you could detect every time they interacted, to the obsession that makes you do anything to get what you want, to the miles possessive strike, it was just all done so well and it was so fascinating to read.
The way the obsession was done in this book was just so good. It went from a little thing that only appared during very specific moments Tobias and Cove shared to something constant that existed in every spheres of their lives and that you could feel every time the other did something, even if it was as simple as breathing, and it was just so wonderfully described.
This book was a wonderful mix of eeryness, lust that makes you go crazy and romantic devotion. It just struct the perfect balance for me.
The vibes in this book were just the best. I adored all of the descriptions, informations and facts about marine life. I just really boosted the romance for me, and made me even more invested in the story.
Also, I just want to say chef’s kiss to the neurodivergent rep in this because it was just the best.
This was a reading experience I won’t forget any time soon, I just adored every seconds I spent with this book, wether it was reading or obsessing about it when I had to put the book down to do something else.

Beautiful!
This was beautiful; I don’t know if that’s the right word for it, but damn, I am floored. E. Baileu should take the flowers. This is my first book by her, and I fear I am a fan now.
The pacing of the story was almost perfect. The way it slowly transitioned from harmless to really dark stuff was so good. Don’t get me started on the characters!
Tobias was obsessive but a different kind of obsessive MMC, the tender, oblivious kind of MMC. I loved him. He was so gentle with Cove, coaxing and patiently waiting, and it was just… wow. You need to read this to know Tobias in all his glory. Tobias with his weird view on the world. Tobias, who spoke in sophisticated, proper language all the time even when talking about sex. He was so… him. Cove's Man is just neurodivergent, so don't fault him for not understanding social cues.
Cove was such a nerd; it was refreshing to see him so passionate about his love for sea animals, and his vast knowledge added to his charm. Also, Cove was valid in all the ways that mattered. He took his time and slowly came to realise what he actually wanted. He wasn’t suddenly over his trauma and running headfirst into Tobias. He is so well written I might cry. I love him.
Their relationship was so toxic, soft, sweet, dark, and suffocating all in one. They were perfect. And Ben deserves a loyalty award for putting up with Tobias for so long.
This was so good, and if you like books with obsessive MMC and their rebellious boyfriends, then this is for you. Take note that this is dark and sweet in the weirdest of ways. Don’t forget to check the content warnings.

Okay I think this one altered my brain chemistry a bit, and in a good way. Tobias is a billionaire philanthropist who loves aquatic life. Cove is a recent grad who loves working with aquatic life. They cross paths at an aquarium that Tobias donates to regularly, and he is taken. At first Tobias just wants to have Cove in his space, a part of his collection, but after an incident it turns to more.
What I adored about this book. Tobias is naïve and a bit awkward at times because the world is hard for him. He’s blunt, doesn’t lie, and just asks questions that many would not because it might be rude or weird. But at the same time he’s observant and attentive, he wants to please Cove and make him happy and content. This plays out in their sexual lives together as well.
Cove is thoughtful and smart as well, he knows Tobias’s nature and his personality so he doesn’t shy away from it and does his best to work with him always. Even when the darkest parts come out he’s cautious, he tests boundaries and makes Tobias work for the trust they had before, it won’t be the same but something different and truer.

Okay E. Baileu has been on my radar for a while because I knew I was going to like there work, but I was wrong. No, I'm actually completely OBSESSED with their work and it consumed me completely and I loved it so so much.
This book completely transported me into it I swear. Like the anxiety I was feeling was horror movie levels because I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop and for it to go bad and GAH I LOVED IT. It was truly a sensory experience, I even swear I felt like I was being chased at one point because I was so nervous. It was that delicious stomach swooping feeling and I adored it so much.
Cove was an instant love of a character. The way he is so in tune with the marine life, and has so much knoweldge was interesting and sweet but also, he just felt so lonely even if it wasn't said. And Tobias was capital I INTENSE from the very first page and I adored him for it. He picked Cove as his instantly and though he tried to do everything the right way well...things went wrong. (NO SPOILERS HERE BUT LIKE AHHH). The obsession completely jumped off the page and was just so so so good. It was dark, it was creepy, and (I'm aware this is a huge red flag), it was also eventually romantic? Like Tobias is not a good person, but he does love Cove so completely that it is intoxicating. This book was just everything I wanted it to be and so much more.

This book blew me out of the freaking water, pun kinda intended. I was absolutely devoured by this book in all the best ways possible. I literally could not stop myself from reading this even when I had other things I needed to do, haha.
Cove and Tobias… What can I say other than they were absolutely just perfect. Cove was such a sweetheart and so very passionate; I could almost feel it coming off the pages. It was quite infectious. The way he cared for his sea creatures even more than himself was so heartwarming. Then there's Tobias; despite what some would say is a distasteful hobby, he really was so endearing, especially when it came to his feelings for Cove. I really enjoyed his unique manner of speech, or really his uniqueness in general. I don't think I've ever read about a character quite like him. And we can't forget about Ben, our favorite side character! I loved how supportive he was to Tobias in so many ways. I really hope we get to see more of him in later books!
This story was honestly quite different than most things I've read. I thought it was so cool how in-depth it went into the aquatic life that this story revolves around. I felt like I was really learning things about these creatures, but in such a fun way. I can't imagine the time it took to research all of it and be able to integrate it all into the story without it feeling like an educational book. All in all, this really was an incredible story that I 110% recommend!

Wow... This book was so beautifully written, it was visceral. The descriptions, the characters, everything felt so...real. I just loved this. It sucked me in and it was so hard to put down. I felt like I was actually in this world, gazing at the serenity of the aquarium tanks. They did their research, I learned so much about marine life here, I even had some fun conversations about it with my marine science major son. LOL I loved getting to know Tobias and Cove. E. Baileu has this unique ability to write characters we're not supposed to like in such a way that we fall in love with them. I was rooting for Tobias. Maybe even from the very beginning. He knew who and what he was and his honesty was brilliant. I also loved how Cove was who he was - a tad awkward and more than a tad nerdy. Loved Tobias's obsession with him and how that related to protecting him. Love an obsessive, possessive, protective MC. <3 The slow burn was sloooow and so worth it! There were times I wondered how we were going to get to the HEA, but it was beautiful and organic and I just loved it. I want more of these characters and more of this world!

First off, I want to apologize to the author E. Baileu I meant to turn this in yesterday. I just finished reading “There’s Something in the Water”, this tells the story of Cove and Tobias. Cove met Tobias at the marine animal aquarium. What Cove doesn’t know is not everything as it seems with Tobias and their run in wasn’t destiny. Tobias is very much intrigued by Cove and vice versa so much so that Cove begins working with Tobias. Everything is going well for Cove until he forgets his phone and walks in on something that will change his life. Time will only tell if it is in a good or bad way. Tobias sees Cove as beauty personified and he is absolutely enthralled with him. However, when Cove learns the truth about Tobias will he run toward or away from him.
I have never read anything from this author and I am really glad I took a chance on them and read this book. It is a page turner for sure the way the author writes each character next level, I wanted to dislike Tobias but as I continue to read he begins to grow on me I enjoyed this so and loved how I didn’t know what was coming when I turned the page.

This book was interesting. I really liked the setting and vibe of this book; the isolated setting with the aquariums and the cool sea creatures plus the actual fun facts about said creatures was honestly a standout for me. I also really liked the characters; Cove and Tobias were really good MMCs that i genuinely enjoyed reading about and formed a connection to, and Ben was also just a great side character that i found myself loving. I think for me the biggest struggle with this book was its pacing. The first half of this book was a bit slow, although still entertaining, but it felt like once we got to the second half/last quarter of the book, it felt like everything was happening so quickly that it was hard for me to believe the relationship between Cove and Tobias. It was like a steady slow burn, then bam, super-fast relationship development to now they are in love and the story is over. Overall i did enjoy this book for what it was and i will be seeing what comes next from this series but i do hope the pacing is a bit better in the future.

this isn’t my first read from this author so i knew i wasn’t going to be disappointed and wow.. this book was amazing! from the first chapter, the writing had me pulled in! i’m not a big fan of slow burns, but this was so good it didn’t even matter. once the burn was there is was scorching!
Cove is gentle, passionate, and full of heart. Tobias is guarded, dark, and dangerous with awkward communication skills. from the moment he notices Cove, he wants him completely. not just to love him, but to know him, claim him, and keep him.
the relationship between them unfolds slowly, painfully, and beautifully. it is full of fear, longing, confusion, and desire. it’s not rushed. it pulls you under inch by inch until you’re drowning in emotion. how the ending unravels is powerful, raw, and unforgettable.
this book was unpredictable, suspenseful, and emotional and that’s what made me love it even more. i definitely cannot wait for the second book of this series!

I knew going into this i was going to love Tobias and Cove just because its E. Baileu, but i didnt expect how much i would love the absolute insane level of possesive and obsessive energy that daddy Tobias gave!
I feel like in another life Cove would be a literal siren or a mermaid because the way Tobias described him was pure magic and beauty ✨️
Was Tobias just a little murdery? Well yeah...but honestly easy to overlook when he calls Cove his “Perfect, pretty siren. My most precious possession" 💖 which Cove apparently came to the same conclusion at the end so a win is a win am i right?
No but really, I loved every slightly psychotic minute of this and look forward to more mentally unstable obsessed men and their pretty boys by E.

This book is like one of those really good mysteries you leave the theater talking about and stays in your mind as you try and understand everything you just saw. But much spicier! 😮💨 I’m still going back and rereading certain chapters because there is so much to digest. Cove is like California sunshine in a bottle (warm, unfiltered) but despite his openness, he immediately clocks Tobias for what he is 🦈 — and once he lets his guard down, his story turns into a captivating terror erotica tale that consumed me until the very end. I really enjoyed the way these characters saw each other and how the writing made you feel like you were in Tobias’ head, aka a very disturbing place. Yet, it’s hard to ignore his draw, which is what got sweet Cove in trouble to begin with. I was definitely left wanting more. More please! — Thank you to author E. I am speechless over this book. This author knows how to write a story, knows how to get into the depth of a relationship and take me with them. And this relationship between Cove(what a f'n perfect name for an MC whose heart is always in the ocean with the creatures who live there and Tobias, a man who collects his idea of perfection. And I will respect E. Baileu's knowledge of neurodiversity because they say they are.
And I started crying at the beginning of the book, over Tobias I think,but Hell I don't really know why and at the end of the book and I know damn well why.
The stage of predator and prey was set by page 12 imo. And the slow burn went until 80%. But I didn't look up at what percentage I was at in the book till 40 %!
I hope the next book which is due in September will be about the endlessly fascinating Ben.
And I started crying at the beginning of the book, over Tobias I think,but Hell I don't really know why and at the end of the book and I know damn well why.
The stage of predator and prey was set by page 12 imo. And the slow burn went until 80%. But I didn't look up at what percentage I was at in the book till 40 %!

This one indeed is a dark romance but not like the ones I used to. This one was different because even when there was darkness every action revolves around gentle care. This story was such a refresh in ways I did not know I was craving.
The author have a talent for making delicious dark plots while making you falling in love with her tale.
I need to tell you that this is a slow burn, but when we get to the hot part...everything IGNITES.
Cove was such a cinamonroll and I LOVE IT his love for sea creatures. Even if Tobias was the "dark one" there was kindness in his actions.
The only complain that I have is that I WANTED a epilogue to see the dinamic between Cove and Tobias.

'There's Something in the Water' is the first book I’ve read by E. Baileu, and it certainly didn’t disappoint!
The banter between Ben and Tobias made me genuinely laugh out loud. I enjoyed this because it’s not your typical kidnapper romance!
E’s vivid descriptions of each scene transported me to the aquarium and helped me understand Cove’s love for all his aquatic friends.
Tobias and Cove had me laughing and a little frustrated because I knew this wasn’t what they wanted, but it’s what happened, and they dealt with it the best way they knew how.
And still love happened even with all the twist and turns.
This book is a must-read!

E’s vivid descriptions of each scene transported me to the aquarium and helped me understand Cove’s love for all his aquatic friends.
Tobias and Cove had me laughing and a little frustrated because I knew this wasn’t what they wanted, but it’s what happened, and they dealt with it the best way they knew how.
And still love happened even with all the twist and turns.
This book is a must-read!

I really enjoyed this story, it was much more of a slow burn than I am used to when it gets past 70% of the story and weve not even got to them kissing/ any spice But the story it self was really good and when you finally do get to have the spice it is 🔥.I was very interested in how their relationship was going to play out the characters were very much one of a kind and the development in their story was very interesting, it did leave me with questions though it got near the end and wished it was longer so we got more of a look at their actual relationship together.

I received an ARC for this book and am so grateful! This book was quite different from this authors others, but I loved it! E. Baileu books will be an automatic read for me! I loved Cove and his truly deep care for marine life. Tobias was also great, even though his actions and thoughts are questionable! Their dynamic was amazing and I honestly loved the slow burn as it made sense for them. This book was an amazing read and I highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you’re into aquatic and marine life!
