Ripped thru this thoroughly engaging, sharply funny and unexpectedly emotional debut novel from Luke Sweeney in one sitting.
A seemingly simple premise and bitingly visceral slice-of-life narrative expands masterfully into a captivating story of love, purpose, and revenge.
Sweeney’s easily digestible & intellectually hilarious writing style combines with a natural pacing to make reading this story an absolute joy even as it explores darker paths.
Highly recommend this book and can’t wait to see what he has in store for us next!
Below is just one of the many passages that resonated with me on multiple levels, just to provide a feel for Sweeney’s lived-in hilarity:
“A man in a lawn chair overseeing his yard sale watched me idle in the street. He saluted, and I realized there was no yard sale. Instead, he kept all of his shit out there permanently. Two boxy snowmobiles made in the eighties were parked among milk crates full of machine parts. A detached exhaust system lay across the grass like a dead python, threatening its tetanus bite. Miscellaneous trash and empty cans filled the bare spots. In my rearview, the lord surveyed his empire with beer in hand.”

Having worked in insurance claims, I found Edwin’s viewpoint to be dead on and loved the his descriptions of his days. This is a very well written book and I loved it.
