She is the last of a dynasty. He built himself from nothing.
She has never watched a football match in her life.
He has never met a woman who didn’t know his name.
They were never supposed to work.
That’s the problem with variables you can’t control.
Naomi Adler-Chen doesn’t do complications. As a surgeon, startup founder, and sole heir to one of America’s most powerful families, she has spent her life being the most capable person in any room, and the most untouchable.
She lost everyone she loved. She learned what that costs. She will not make that mistake again.
Then Darian Wolff asks for her specifically.
The most expensive footballer in Europe. Germany’s golden boy. Blue-eyed, golden-haired, and photographed everywhere he goes. His reputation arrives before he goals, scandals, tabloids.
What the headlines miss is the intelligence he uses quietly, the kindness he doesn’t perform for cameras, and the way he looks at Naomi like she is something worth being patient for.
She is his doctor. That is the beginning and the end of it.
Except it isn’t.
Set across the glittering worlds of elite European football and legacy medicine, from the training grounds of Munich to the operating theatres of Boston, a restaurant table in Paris to the roar of a New York stadium, Under Different Lights is a slow burn romance about a woman who has survived everything except being truly seen, and a self-made man who knows exactly what it costs to be misunderstood.
Between one rule neither of them should break. A connection neither of them saw coming. And a question Naomi has never let herself answer.
It feels like winning. Until it doesn’t. And then, if you’re brave enough, it does again.

Under Different Lights has a genuinely fun premise: a forbidden romance between a surgeon and the star striker she's supposed to be fixing, not falling for. And Lexie August's writing style is easy to read and flows nicely, which kept me turning the pages. The standout moment for me was the scene at Darian's grandmother's house, where Naomi finally feels like a real, warm person. That scene alone showed what this book could have been. My main issue is with Naomi's conflict. Her reasons for resisting Darian never fully landed for me. I kept waiting for a clearer explanation of why she was holding back, and it just never came. And Darian himself, while charming on paper, didn't quite have the magnetic pull I was hoping for in a book boyfriend. A solid read if you're looking for something light and quick, but I wished the characters had a little more depth to match the promise of the premise.
This book has interesting occupation between the two leads. Naomi is a surgeon, Darian plays soccer professionally. While their world crash in one eventful evening, their story is far from smooth. I like the first half of the book, the pace and development are quite quick and fun. But i feel like the second half is a bit slow and i feel a bit messy. I do understand that they come from different world, but some part felt a bit longer than it should be. Nonetheless, the romance is there, the spice is there (important for me), it's still a fun read 😍
I just turned the final page of Under Different Lights by Lexie August, and my heart is still racing in the best way possible! The dynamic between a total control-freak heroine and the one chaotic variable she never saw coming completely stole the show. If you love a perfect blend of high-stakes medical drama and sizzling sports romance, you need to add this one to your TBR immediately.
A gripping and compelling page turner. I couldn’t put down the book as I wanted to know what will happen next to Naomi and Darian. Soccer X Medicine X Romance = 🔥🔥🔥. Very hot and not just because it is summer!
If you are looking for a romance that sweeps you off your feet while keeping your heart pounding, you need to pick up this book immediately.
What truly elevates this novel is its depth. It is a refreshing, honest, and intellectually stimulating forbidden soccer romance featuring brilliant, deeply career-driven characters. The plot masterfully navigates the high-stakes tension of balancing ambition, athletic pressure, and attraction, all while spanning different continents to offer wonderful, global cultural insights.
At the center of it all is an incredibly strong, resilient heroine you can't help but root for. The writing style is a breath of fresh air—sharp, honest, and beautifully attentive to detail.
It is rare to find a book that balances heart-racing intensity with such thoughtful prose. I couldn't put it down—highly recommended for your Goodreads TBR list!
This easygoing romance novel brings together an unlikely couple which couldn't seem further apart at first. The story delivers a nicely paced character development in a heartwarming tone, together with playful banter and just the right amount of friction, which makes for a feel-good read while you're waiting for your favourite team's next match in the World Cup.
