The Cure

Rate this book
An action-packed, unabashed medical thriller that openly examines the disturbing elements of the breast cancer drug machine that remain largely hidden behind "pink-ribbon" promises made by profit-consumed conspirators that sell dangerous drugs with no concern for the women who die in pain.Dr. Bernard Clouseau, the world's leading breast cancer research investigator, was murdered during an awards dinner in his honor. Dr. Carol Anderson, head of The Office of Communications & Public Liaison for the National Institutes of Health, is asked to reprise her former role as a clinical trial examiner. Carol reluctantly agrees to conduct a routine investigation to verify the late scientists' trial results, which have been questioned by the New England Journal of Medicine.Dr. Thomas Christian, a clinical trial fraud investigator for the Office of Research Integrity, requested to take the case. Thomas spent his residency under Dr. Clouseau's tutelage, but gave up the opportunity to join his team to conduct trial fraud investigations as payment for his wealthy family's history. Thomas is certain that the trial results are valid, and is committed, right or wrong, to preserving his former mentor's legacy.Carol and Thomas have a history, but have not spoken since she broke off an intense and emotional relationship they shared during medical school. They soon learn that Dr. Clouseau was diverting funds from his research to fund unauthorized tests that may have led to a cure for breast cancer. As they search for the formula, Carol and Thomas discover a world of corporate espionage and institutional corruption they never knew existed. The ruthless CEO of a major pharmaceutical company wants the formula for himself, and is willing to eliminate anyone who stands between him and the discovery of the century. His closest colleagues have no idea what his next move will be. Sell the cure for a one-time fortune, or bury the formula and preserve the perpetually lucrative drug treatment regime?Fast-paced and hard to put down, The Cure, based on a bizarre National Cancer Institute clinical trial fraud case, is a thought-provoking primer on the truth behind breast cancer drug research. It's not about saving women.

This is a well written thriller by a high school classmate of mine. I truly enjoyed the book. Antoine did a lot of research into breast cancer and treatments.

Pharmaceutical companies stand to lose a lot if what Dr. Clouseau claims to be true. That he has found the cure to breast cancer.

While I am familiar with some and do agree with much of the statistics, Devine has the characters uncharacteristically spouting off long-winded data on breast cancer, making this seem more of a book on research and less a novel. In this regard, it makes the book preachy, causing this reader to want to zip through parts. There is much more scientific data on breast cancer and its treatment and possible prognosis than there is story. To appreciate this book, you'd have to be in that particular field. It talks about receptors, antibodies, formalin, IHC, HER-2.

Quite interesting how folks in both vehicles can hold long discourses with their respective travel companions during a prolonged car chase. Think I'd be more concerned with my driving and just trying to not hyperventilate. But that's just me...

While this is mostly a soapbox about chemicals and cancer, particularly breast cancer, it's also somewhat a travel brochure as it waxes eloquent on places such as Legal Seafoods, and the Black Cultural Centre for Nova Scotia.

Though some of the research information was interesting, I was looking for more of a novel. This could have succeeded to some degree if most of the pages and pages of medical data had been left out.

I am the author. I look forward to your reviews. Below is a brief synopsis:

Drawing on more than 5 years of research, THE CURE is based on a true story that rocked the foundation of the breast cancer research establishment. Two federal investigators performing a routine follow-up examination find themselves reluctantly investigating the death of a prominent scientist who secretly found a drug-based cure for breast cancer. A corporate spy planted in his clinical trial discovered his secret. Her employers, whose drugs are not part of the miracle formula, arrange for his death and the destruction of any proof about his discovery. THE CURE is a compelling story that mixes science with suspense, romance and intrigue in this international action thriller.

My interest waned with all the technical jargon. Didn't finish.
