"If we want to survive, we adapt."

I have a confession to make. I'm a blurb skimmer. I try to read them. I really do, but under certain conditions I tend to lapse. This was one of those times. My blurb skim for this went a little something like: "blah, blah, blah, two dudes who've known each other for a long time, yada, yada KRAKENRY!!!!!!!!" during which there was much squealing, squeeing and, if I'm totally honest, an approximation of a jig.

Do not let this happen to you.

Fallout is not a romance . It's a fascinating look at human nature and its capacity for both good and evil during a catastrophe with the central characters being an established gay couple who are in a low point in their relationship. They go on a hiking vacation back to their home town in an effort to rekindle their relationship. And all hell breaks loose.

The first chapter hooked me and I initially thought Fallout was going to delve into the difficulties of sustaining a relationship after the honeymoon's over and life has dealt them some hard knocks. Then chapter two happened. If you're familiar with these two authors, it should come as no surprise that they are comfortable and even revel in darkness. If you're squeamish, I wouldn't recommend this. There is on page rape and torture.

Now that I've gotten all the warnings out of the way I'm going to gush. I think the cat's out of the bag regarding my feels on these two authors, but they hit it out of the park here. I do hope they collaborate again because this felt like something special. For as dark as it can be it has pockets of beauty that left me a little verklempt, a feat in and of itself. They manipulated the English language to their will, wielded it with artistry in both the characterizations and the narrative which drew me in like a tractor beam then threw me around like a piñata at a party of seven year olds jacked up on cake and Mt. Dew.

Fallout kept me on the edge of my seat. I don't mind saying at one point I had serious concerns one of the MCs wasn't going to make it. But the level of research they must've done to build this world is what made this stunning. Jack is working on a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and they get stuck on vacation during a freak volcanic ash fallout. Bas has a spinal injury that requires frequent monitoring and treatment. They folded in legitimate environmental concerns through the underbelly of this story which appealed to me as an environmentalist and illustrated the challenges of mundane daily activities by someone who has suffered a spinal injury. They gave them both depth by focusing on the details of what makes each of these men tick.

Bas and Jack spend the majority of Fallout apart after being separated shortly after the fallout begins. Their faith in their ability to survive is repeatedly tested and they both find themselves thrust into situations they never could have imagined. They discover truths about themselves, encounter atrocities and meet some extraordinary people. The genius, for me, was the plausibility of the catastrophe and, by extension, human nature under extreme conditions.

How does one reconcile actions committed under extraordinary circumstances with their self-schema in the aftermath?

He needed to know that Jack still wanted to touch him. He needed that to be the only thing that had never changed, and would never change.

It's a dark roller coaster of emotions but it's also, paradoxically, beautiful. If the warning tags don't scare you, you will be rewarded by what KRAKENRY have accomplished.

Even in darkness, Love will find a way.

Jack and Bas as a couple are perfect in all their imperfections. The are rendered so frighteningly realistic in the areas of conflict, synergy, and shorthand communication that it is simply impressive. It's even more so because things are not easy. In fact, the relationship is rocky and both are considering cutting their losses.

Until, they lose more.

Hell cracks open when an ecological disaster occurs and bellows forth unforeseen challenges. Under stress, the veneer of humanity is very thin and cracks so easily. Jack and Bas are swept into a maelstrom of struggle and violence in their attempt to survive.

They have a history together and there's the good and the bad. Sometimes the bad leaves you with mementoes that don't go away--constant reminders. Do they pull you together, or are they the wedge that drives you apart. This is NOT a romance story, but it is a beautiful love story. Not the kind with champagne and roses and sweet nothings whispered in ears, but the kind that has sacrifice and fortitude and forgiveness.

Love isn't born in the smooth sailing, but rather how you manage the rough seas. When things get ugly, is it cut and run or grab hold and forge ahead? During this story I had my doubts at times, the emotional realism was great. Jack and Bas, they've weathered the worst, managed to hold on, and find unknown strength in themselves.

This is a fast-paced, engaging read. It is entertaining, and runs the reader through a gauntlet of emotions. But, don't worry. You aren't dumped into the abyss. You go full circle.

So, I've read all of Caspian's and a majority of Henry's works. I was nervous going into this story. Violence and cruelty are weapons they both can wield magnificently. I psyched myself up for this one, but honestly, it wasn't necessary. Yes, there is unbridled violence and rape, but--BUT, the emphasis isn't on the sensory details, or reveling in horror of it. No, the characters are aware and traumatized, but they're moving forward. Even when things are at their worst, they still have a sense of agency. It is not depressing and it is not folding to the inevitable.
Maybe he could only crawl fifty feet without stopping. But after that he could crawl another fifty feet, and then another.

These are fighters and they ain't going down easy.

Overall, an apocalyptic love story where the true colors shine through.

Favorite passage:
“I can do it.”

“I know. I know you can. But you don’t have to do it on your own. I can help you.”

I really have no idea how to review this book. I wouldn't classify it as a romance, and that's really what I enjoy reading. It was nightmarish, but I couldn't stop reading it. It was so very well done. This book is going to haunt me for many days.

A young couple, experiencing relationship problems, go camping. They get separated. The story goes back and forth between the two MCs and what they are experiencing during their separation. It isn't pretty. My rage level was through the roof.

The ending is a happy for now. I would love it if the authors decided on a book 2 or 1.5.

Aaaaaaaaawesome! Truly fantastic. This is going to be crazy hard to review without massive spoiler tags but here goes. I loved the undercurrents of the relationship between the two MCs right from the start. There is so much boiling at the surface and clearly down deep as well, so the authors just made the most of it. How Bas found the strength to deal with all the changes his life throws at him... wow. (damn spoilers)

The biker characters were perfect, so well done. And the story just flows seamlessly. Once I started it I couldn't put it down and read through to the end. Knowing both these authors I definitely wasn't taking anything for granted . So the ending was great :) Adapt or get left in the dust.

I could not put this down. Gripping and mesmerizing. A perfect blend of apocalyptic horror and survival against all odds that manages a thread of a love story, too. And each element is well balanced with the other.

Without zombies. No zombies were used in the making of this story.

Jack and Bastian are lovers, trying to save their relationship with a wilderness camping trip to a favorite childhood spot. These young men provide the early tension— they are in trouble before the real trouble begins— as they are dealing with a past event that acts as a festering rift between them. First night on their camp out, and they wake up to a whole other nightmare.

A heavy volcanic ash from an unknown source falls from the sky blanketing everything, choking everything into a downward slide to… stop. Clogging everything… any machinery with moving parts grinds to a halt, cars can’t go, cell service is disrupted (radio wave interference? I couldn’t figure why the cell system would go out), and even breathing the ashy air brings a threat.

But nature isn’t the only enemy… a marauding biker gang, thugs on a raping rampage, also threatens the locals. I tell you, if the apocalypse ever hits, I will run for the hills far, far away from people… ok…

… now, I’m thinking about the Yellowstone Caldera, its super volcano of such a size that, with one eruption, it could destroy all of North America. Bury us in ash. It’s overdue for another eruption, folks. Run for the hills.

This novella got its hooks in me from page one. Freaked me out. In no time at all, we’ve bonded with Jack and Bastion, frantic for their safety, wondering what the hell is going on. And, like the best of stories, it gives us something meaty to chew on.

Do dark days bring out the best or the worst in us? Do we give rise to the dark side in us all? Do we band together or is it each person for themselves? The problem is, it only takes a few bad apples to tip the scales towards anarchy.

When you go through a baptism of fire do you come out weaker or stronger? Jack and Bastian find this out the hard way. A warning: there is extreme and graphic violence, sexual and otherwise. The bad guys are a believable threat, they are fully rendered, real assets to the nightmare . But Jack and Bastian rise to the occasion, too. The evolution in both their characters in this short space of less than two hundred pages is a thing to behold. Especially Bastian… There are delicious hints around a D/s thing between Jack and Bastian that I really wished had gotten explored just a little more… The story ending is HFN but don’t let that bother you, it is well worth the journey.

More than anything, I loved the suspense, the ramp up of tension. This writing team (A dream team— I was so excited to hear about this collaboration!), knows how to deliver the sweet and tender as well as the grisly and gory, without ever losing sight of two young men fighting for survival and for love. I hope there is a lot more to come from this creative force.

I received an ARC from the authors in exchange for my honest review.

Talk about sucking you in! This book had me right away, it’s rare for a book to be able to do that. To have me so intrigued and invested from page one. PAGE ONE where we meet Bastian and Jack as they head up for a camping trip/research dalliance for Jack’s PhD project. There are so many hints in the first few pages of what will happen, so much foreshadowing going on and yet you still know nothing. Absolutely nothing but you want to. No matter how tight the knot your gut has been twisted into with the possibility, you want to know, so you keep reading.
It was Bas who always said he liked his stories to end where they began.

I love a book that not only entertains me in every way but makes me stop reading to do a bit of research. The connection with a story and its title are a pretty big deal for me and I admit, it wasn’t until about halfway through that I Googled the word Fallout and had to push my jaw back into place as it was hanging open in a not so attractive way. The title, the COVER… can I stop for a minute and talk about that cover. Good lord. It’s amazing, the layering with the cover is stunning and beautiful. Once you get into the story, go back and look at the cover again and really look at it. Read a bit further, go back and look again. The elements of the story, they are layered and blended in that cover and it’s creepy how well it’s done and simply gorgeous.

Fallout is one of those stories that take you on a twisted journey. It gives you enough history with Jack and Bastian when you need it, slowly spoon feeding it to you with precision to not overwhelm you nor to leave you with questions. The story, being co-written and me, not having read M. Caspian before, I am curious as to who wrote what with this dark tale of devastation and hope as it buries those who are willing to fight all to make it out, alive.
What was that quote? Something about when you’re going through hell, keep going.

I can tell you, there are heavy elements of Henry’s writing in this, obviously. The rush to the danger and the edge of your seat feeling all leading to a moment of uneasy stillness. Things are still happening, bad things are still being done and it’s not anywhere near happy, but this numb sense of tranquility washes over you and you take a breath. Not a deep breath, one does not simply take deep breaths when reading a book Lisa Henry is involved in… until the last word is read.
God, what he’d give for hot food. A bed. And Bas. For it to be last week.

Jack and Bas are not in the best place with their relationship when the book begins and we are slowly fed the reasons why. It hurt so much to read because it’s obvious both men are deeply in love with one another, have been best friends since the fourth grade and one unfortunate incident leaves them with a chasm between them.

These two, they go through so much in a few small amount of time. What is happening, happens fast and the psychological page-turner sets in. That’s really what this is, a thriller will elements of romance, action and psychology all tossed into one hell of a story that I couldn’t put down. I read this well into the night and was in pure rapture with each page, each new unfathomable detail of what was going on. To say this book was intense would be silly of me. It’s beyond that and it’s amazing. I can’t get this out of my head, how the hell do authors come up with stories like this and thank fuck that they do.

Have I told you anything about this book yet? I can’t wrap my mind around a proper review to tell you it was fantastic, to tell you that it has its moments of darkness and that there a lot of them but this was truly a tale of strength. Goodness, this was good.

Well, what do I write about this one? I can say that I started this last night and had no intention of finishing it in one sitting when I began, but finish it I did.

Has anyone seen the movie The Mist? While reading this I had flashbacks of seeing that movie. Although this has quite a few differences, it did make me think about it at times during certain sections.

This is hard to review because I didn't really feel good at the end. At no point did I wish that Jack and Bas were real and that they would invite me to a Friday night dinner party. They didn't give me that 'I would definitely want to hang out with them' vibe. They were indeed boyfriends, but their relationship was definitely strained at the beginning of the book. Through some unfortunate circumstances, they became separated. One of the great parts of this book is that you could feel the love they had for each other MORE when they were separated than when they were together. They were survivors and did the best they could to get out of the situations they had fallen into.

Placed into two entirely different situations, both Jack and Bas relied on instincts and courage to keep going in order to get back to the other. You should be warned that there are some very dark parts to this and bad things definitely happen to innocent people. Yet, I couldn't stop reading.

So I give it 4 stars because it made me want to read more and I was in suspense throughout! But it was exhausting and draining because, my God, what else could happen? :) I was prepared though as Lisa Henry is a favorite of mine.

Lisa Henry is one of my favourite authors, she writes books that make me feel, they hurt, guaranteed… She does it so well, it’s bloody scary! Having only read one book by M. Caspian, The Arroyo, which was just fabulous, I was really excited about this author pairing. Having now read Fallout I’m hoping these two will put their heads together again… because they delivered a brilliantly crafted dark thriller that truly delves into the darkness of human nature and left me sitting on the edge of my seat, inwardly screaming at the traumatic experiences our two main characters endure during the course of this book and how their own moral compass is more than definitely put to the test.

Before getting to the horrors of rape, torture and abuse…yes, it’s not pretty. They subtly move the story forward, and I liked how they built the arc in intensity, essentially endearing me to both Bas and Jack, two men conflicted in their relationship, it was so sad to watch and I hurt for them. Because despite their reservations and the crossroads they were at, the foundations of their love had been formed and securely bonded at a young age, best friends and lovers… and I wanted them to get past all the guilt and resentment and just see their love for what it was. But when their weekend camping trip to their teenage haunt, a time for them to try and reconnect, turned to disaster. Firstly by pissing off a gang of ruthlessly violent bikers, then a volcanic ash storm hits creating chaos and lawlessness. Which put a series of events in place that had me feeling nervous they were in for a whole heap of shite.

This book is compelling reading… At. It’s. Best. The writing excellent, complimented by both authors styles. The story is cleverly weaved together with alternating POV’s and flashbacks, providing more understanding of how both Bas and Jack are so entwined, and even though they are separated for the most part, seeing what they go through and watching their bravery whilst still clinging on to hope, only increased my anxiety and nervousness, and like them, I wanted to disconnect from the horrors. They had to survive, they had to find a way back to each other not only physically but mentally. I couldn’t have willed it so any harder if I tried, because what they were going through just broke my heart.

For the rest of this review and an excerpt from this amazingly fabulous book... go have a nosy over on the blog...

The darkness of the post-apocalyptic world, so well written, with its multiple rapes and murders, is just a bit too much for me right now. I may come back to it on some warm and sunny day when life is smooth and jagged edges have healed over.

This review is all over the place

I'm going to be honest with you guys, I wish I would never have picked this up and started reading. It's crazy, I love L.H works. I thoroughly enjoy the emotional food processor I end up in after reading her stories. This book I didn't shed not one tear. I don't know what the says about me since I've cried every time I've read a L.H book, do I contribute that to M.C, I think not. I think it was just the story. I did not like it. I liked the ending, I did not like the rest of the story. I am owning up to me not being mentally prepared for it, but come on that's a cop out I don't know who prepares for events like these.

The events in the story are vividly itched in my brain. The writing was purely brilliant. I can close my eyes and picture everything they go through. We are witnessing the love these two guys have for each other the entire book. It's not a romance story , and I'm okay with that. I like books that doesn't require a HEA. The events surrounding these two were just hard to deal with for me. As soon as they stopped for firecrackers, I just had this feeling that something BAD was going to happen. At that point, I felt nauseous, and that didn't end to the last word on the last page.

I read this in one sitting, because if I had put it down I knew I wasn't going to read anymore of it. It wasn't a bad story. It was dark, about perseverance, about the love for another human being, about surviving. As characters I love Jack & Bas. They were amazing. Talk about resilience. They never stopped fighting. I just don't know where they were able to get the will power from. I so want that power!!! The blurb told us nothing. I didn't know what to expect, well low and behold it was Interracial Romance factor, one of my favorite genres! Ha, yes a black gay man in the front seat people, and Jack was amazing!

Jack was like Indiana Jones on a mission with a little bit of Jason Bourne in him. I think a person will become anyone that can be in order to survive. He did things that he would never done. I didn't fault him for anything. Jack was truly loyal to finding Bas. It was sad at times, because that moment where he just stops and lays down in the back seat, I wanted him to stop, but he kept pushing. He did this all out with the sense of urgency, love and determination to get to Bas. Thank you Mizzou for teaching him the tools he needed to survive. Bas was his own bad ass. He survived using the skills he knew best. It was sickening what Bas had to do to survive, but he owned and it played it well. I wish those guys could have died a horrible death all over again, but it was never enough in my mind.

I don't have anymore words to describe what I'm feeling. I thought sleeping on this, I would have a small amount of closure on what to rate this book fairly, but I'm still confused. I do know that if Jack & Bas ever get seperated unintentionally they will find each other come Hell & High Water

This book is brutal, incredibly dark and also starkly beautiful too. Hauntingly realistic it is likely to stay with me as a visceral reminder of how vulnerable we are in the face of natural disaster, and ultimately what matters most is love and survival.

Jack and Bas find inner strength to deal with a world that seems to be falling apart. Separated in the chaos of a natural disaster they both draw on inner resilience to survive. Whilst coping with the trauma and uncertainty of the present, they find moments to reflect on their relationship and to understand that despite everything their love (sometimes obscured by past resentment) is deep and sustaining whether or not they can reunite. Fallout illustrates how labels, and stereotypes and obligation can blind us to truth.

The story is entirely engrossing. The pacing is fast, and contrasts between coping in the aftermath and reflection on life before, shows how easy it can be to overlook what really matters when caught in minutia day to day life.

Ultimately this is a book celebrating strength, integrity, survival and love. At its very core the choices we make for ourselves and others is the difference between living in hope or despair. In the worst of times friendship can be forged, and belonging and acceptance found.

Okay, so perhaps this isn't a book for the faint hearted, there are scenes of murder, torture and rape but in many respects that is only a small part of the story, and compassion and resilience shine through. I found Fallout both horrifying and uplifting, and I feel much the richer for having read it. Highly recommended. Be. brave and give this a try.

Great chops!

This could easily rival any blockbuster apocalypse movie.
You get the perfect set up with Bas and Jack's backstory, can't help but be invested in them from page one.
You get a fair accounting of humans reacting to dire circumstances.

Blood, gore, terror, realistic heroism. That was my favorite, the very, very, real process these two guys went through individually.

Where do I even begin. It's been a few hours and I'm still not sure how to go about writing this review, how to formulate all my thoughts about it. I don't think there's much more I can add that hasn't already been said and been said better so instead I'm linking to those reviews that describe the book wonderfully and that express my own feelings toward it:
[ETA:
-Vivian's review ~ totally the go-to one imo, as usual she says it perfectly]
-Optimist's review
-Elizabetta's review

and of course quotes:

notes:
-minor typos
-not nearly as dark as I anticipated (esp in the middle portion)
-I totally thought of

You know that aerie prickling sensation you get when you know something horrible is going to happen, but you don't know what? You're not sure if there is anything preemptive that you can do, and every decision should be weighed carefully? You want to ignore your baser instincts, but they keep screaming at you to run and hide?

This story painted that exact picture for me. The feeling it drew out of me was dread and impending doom. I was completely immersed in the world Lisa Henry and M. Caspian painted, and there was no way out or back, I had to move through it. They captured me, and made me participate in this story, not passively watch what was happening to the characters. I wanted Bas and Jack to just get the hell out of there quickly, but of course everything that could go wrong, did and they ended up in a fight for survival.

Bas and Jack's relationship was falling apart, and it is disturbing but realistic to see the internal struggles they both went through as the story progressed. I completely understood their resentment of each other, even while they loved each other dearly. I have been at that point in my own relationship, where I just wanted it to end because I had nothing good left. It takes great strength to come back from that, and acknowledge that you need to change.

The horror element of this story wasn't what I expected. I expected it to be darker, more ominous. That's not to say it wasn't an awesome Suspense/Thriller, but I was expecting to go deeper into that feeling of despair. Good news for those who might otherwise have avoided this story because of the horror tag. Rest assured, this is not what I would consider horror. I'd say it is edgy, bordering on dark, and the non-con tags should not be ignored for those with triggers, but otherwise, I think this story would be suitable for most people who enjoy suspense novels.

While Jack was a worthy character, Bas definitely stole the show for me. Bas' strength through his ordeal is awe inspiring. I loved that he just would not give up. Even through his pain, he was planning his next move. For someone with a broken body, he had amazing strength of character, resilience and a desire to live. His spirit could not be broken.

Some funny and beautiful moments with side characters. All of which brought something to the story.

The writing was superb. It captured every detail and feeling.

Recommended for all M/M suspense readers. Trigger warnings in the tags.

Apocalypse Survival Tale!

Full disclosure - I beta-read an earlier draft of this. I loved the version I beta-read, and on re-reading, I love this published version even more. The writing is polished and effective, and the story is gripping.

Bas and Jack are on a camping trip when disaster strikes the whole area. After that it's all post-apocalyptic darkness. We see how thin the veneer of civilization really is when people immediately start running amok. Bas and Jack have to fend for themselves, and each has to meet separate challenges and face his own dangers. I especially loved Bas in this story - he's fragile and beautiful and incredibly strong at the same time. Both MCs change and find hidden strength and toughness through adversity, and the character development in this story is what really made this one stand out.

Beautifully written. Gruesomely enthralling. A train wreck that you can't turn away from. I needed just a little more time in the end with Bas and Jack. They spent most of the book apart and a little more time at the end would have made this a 5-star read for me.

Where it had gone wrong wasn’t the puzzle. The puzzle was how to fix it.

This ain’tchur Grandmomma’s table top jigsaw puzzle, neither.

Now then, I was quickly and deftly presented with the lay of the land and where things stood between Bastian and Jack right at the beginning. It’s a good thing, too, considering where the story was soon headed, dragging me along with it.

This is a horror movie, in simple terms. Yes, there’s violence on page, some of it stomach churning, but like all good horror flicks, the worst of it comes in the form of character reactions. Intimation breeds imagination.

This is a horror story, in case that wasn’t yet clear.

The detail is spectacular. When I’m made to feel the same gritty, aching, suffocating physical surroundings along with the characters, it goes in column marked success.

Remember, this is a horror film. Not a lot of feel good moments to be had. Often times, it felt horror for horror’s sake, which is as it should be when telling a story that takes place in a remote setting, with ignorant, depraved assholes, and rape and torture included. Not even the one supporting character who may have been the “redemption” candidate had enough to break away, not for me.

Normally, I wouldn’t be so blunt in a review about some of the specifics included but these more than warrant mention. Be prepared.

Additionally, and perhaps unusually for me, most of these things kept me from maintaining a connection with Bas and Jack. It was there to begin with but underfed as the story went on. The story is front and center, the characters filling the necessary roles to move the plot forward. I wanted to invest but found little on which to grab hold after the first few chapters, the point at which things changed direction. My emotional devastation would have increased tenfold if my storyteller stock brokers had given me more of an opportunity to spend the hard earned cracks in my heart.

Again I’ll say, this is a horror story and it’s wonderfully written. Maybe I’m not as much a fan of horror as I used to be? Maybe my tastes have changed? Looks like it. But if this is your cup of tea, then you’ve got a parade of awesomeness coming down the winding mountain road, just for you.

This is gay fiction. It’s more of what’s needed, and wanted, no matter the type – horror, crime, humor, mystery, etc. – in general fiction today. It thrills me to know this story is out there for the taking.

This is a horror movie for the page and it is top notch. Bas and Jack are forever changed with no pathway back to the way things were. This left me curious at the end, wondering what was next, not just for them but this world, a landscape changed as to never to return to its previously visible appearance. If the hills and homes and flora and fauna all change, so must the human beings sharing their space.

Despite this story missing the mark for me and my personal enjoyment, I unreservedly recommend it for all the horror lovers out there. You’ll have a blast and be exposed to some high quality writing and storytelling.

Many kudos, hi5’s, thumbs up and everything else for Henry and Caspian for sharing this story with all of us.

This has been an excellent read and well discussed as a buddy read on the BDSM group with spoiler alerts, and also some discussion on the EZ group. It is a story with many layers and some sentences/statements have a profound depth to them.

It begins with two young gay men on a camping trip, Bastian/Bas, lives with post accident spinal damage and chronic pain, which in turn limits his physical activity/ability, and his partner and cause of the original accident, Jack, the planner, doing research into endangered Hellbender amphibians for his...Masters or Ph.D papers. It states both...in the UK these are very different post grad courses, so unless differs in the US an error here, but that's Inconsequential to this story...for without warning, lava ash begins to fall, only there's no volcano anywhere near...so from normal life the writers Lisa Henry & M. Caspian take us into a potentially apocalyptic scenario. We are all programmed in the more affluent world to expect help from emergency services...but what if this can't happen?
Underlying themes are explored that relate to individuals actions, cause and effect, as well as good versus evil actions begin to be played out: whether as good and helpful citizens, scared and introverted, or rotten to the core...there is no law and order, sod the consequences, all suddenly happens. These themes are played out through the different characters in this small and quite remote part of the US State.
I don't want to go into the story too much, but some horrific things happen, murders, rapes and vile abuses committed by people onto others. Yet there is also life changing experiences that shows these men a very different side to their personal life journey, strengths and weaknesses and ultimately their relationship. It begins on rocky ground and goes through hell.
It is well worth taking this trip, albeit forewarned, that Lisa Henry and M. Caspian have woven for us readers...and at the same time hope and pray nothing apocalyptic takes place in your lifetime...who knows how you and others around you will behave!
Whilst reading it, note the clever use of analogy the writers have used to add depth to our understanding. Compare endangered amphibians and then in the new found happenings the human situation. Then Bas, his delicate birdlike frailty of bone held together with the strength of titanium and where it takes him from frailer to strength beyond his partner Jack's realisation. Jack, young and black, it saddened me how he is viewed and treated by so many, especially law enforcers...when will that change?

Has to be five stars from me for this excellent, horrific, engaging and enjoyable read, and I recommend it to those with eyes wide open.

I don't think I'll ever forget this, as much as I might try (though no, I don't really want to). I forced myself to keep reading, skimming in many places, and finish it as fast as possible. Because otherwise if I put it down, I wouldn't be able to start it up again. Buried underneath all the horror though, the love is what pushed me through to see the end. I was rooting for both of them so hard. No, this is definitely not a romance as you're used to at least.
I'm a forever fan of both authors' works, and together, they make up my ultimate dream writing team. Darkness to a whole other level. I really hope this isn't the last story from them together.

So what did I think of this book?

The whole time I'm reading I keep thinking," Why?" OMG! Is it going to be too much? Will I have to bleach my brain at a later date? Plus, the amount of survival training the MCs started was lackluster, so of course they stepped from one land mine to another.

ME reading

But what did I find? It was never too much, the descriptions were great. The imagery amazing. The side stories to connect you to each character were fabulous. Ally with her princess memory. Bas hearing his nurse. Jack learning the meaning of biology. Wow!

Would I categorize this as a dark read? Yes. For me though it was much more suspenseful and a true thriller.

By the end this is how I felt

I can usually count on Lisa Henry for a great read. This story let me down. We never did find out when the dust stopped falling so have to assume the land is now barren and sterile. That would also precipitate a solar night with a possible ice age or a permanent winter. I also think that way to much of the story was spent with the bikers raping Bas and their other captives.
