I couldn’t get fully into this one. I liked both Hector and Tara.
I loved the beginning but definitely found myself bored by 45 percent and just losing interest.
I did find some laughs here and there and that 💯 made up for being bored in spots.
I’d say it felt like an Emily Henry book in some ways, so if you are into that definitely pick this one up?”!

This was a sweet romcom that would be great as a beach read. I didn’t know what to expect when Tara‘s father sent her on the trip to Hawaii, but it was a great read and I loved how she and Hector kept ending up in the same place. Tara’s thoughts and outlook definitely changed as a result of the trip (which was the whole point) and the story was sweet and brought closure to the relationship she had with her dad. Great first book by Cori Wamsley!

As the first book I read by Cori, I think I chose a really good one. Tara and Hector made this book so much fun to read. It’s a super sweet story in which Tara and Hector meet again on a very interesting trip and then spend time together. Such a slow burn, perfect for when you are dreaming of going on vacation or perhaps are going on vacation soon. I enjoyed the writing, it made it very easy to binge. Super sweet side characters as well, made the story totally worth it!

If you like romcoms this will be your next favorite book! I love seeing Tara go in this journey that changes the way she views everything in her life. Seeing how she learns to not over think and to welcome new things into her life. Not to mention how cute the romance is. This book was so much more than just romance it shared great life lessons too!

I always take notes, write down thoughts and relatable moments, and point out any errors. My review is afterwards. I’ve never read anything by Cori Wamsley before, so I’m excited to find a new (to me) author!
1. I love the cover! The colors, font choice, and designs are pretty.
2. Do school kids still play dodgeball? 🤣 That was huge in the nineties! (…Thatcher is pummeled by several dodgeballs…) (pg. 11)
3. I just said something similar to my husband earlier. I told him my face always shows what I think about someone/thing. 🤦🏻♀️😂 (…since my face always provides captions for my thoughts.) (pg. 15)
4. I bet the map is in the game! 🤔 (He let me draw the animals on our maps, crude as my skills were.) (pg. 27)
5. I talk to our two dogs. Sadie, our Shepsky, talks back sooo I might have full convos with her! 🤷🏻♀️🤣 (I would vomit if I heard someone else talking to their animals like this.) (pg. 29)
6. Chicken Pad Thai from a local place, Siam Smile, is my most favorite food! 🇹🇭 🍜 (…help ourselves to a steaming plate of pad Thai.) (pg. 32)

15. The simile in this sentence is great! Idk why, but this sentence stood out to me. (The stench of sulfur hangs heavy in the air as heat rises from the surface like souls escaping the underworld.) (pg. 228)
16. I’m not sure “Mamá” and “Papá” need to be in italics every time the words are spoken. 🤔
17. This…I love it. I never thought of anything in life this way. It’s so true. (…someone made a choice that gave me a scar,…) (pg. 230)
18. I’ve noticed that “toothpaste commercial smile/grin” is used way too often.

I love the descriptions in this book. The layout of the different areas in Hawaii, the emotional moments like the offerings, and talk about the culture was beautiful. It was so easy to envision. It definitely encourages me to visit Hawaii one day. The funny moment with the chickens was hilarious. I’ve been chased by a few before, so that’s also was easy to see. Also..just a tip..if you ever get stung by a jellyfish, just pee on the area. 🤭
I did like the book. But it was very slow at progressing. I often felt that I had to *force* myself to continue reading. I usually finish a roughly 300 page book in a couple days. It’s been a week. So, while I liked the plot I wish the flow was at a better speed.
I would have liked to see more between Tara and Hector other than a couple of kisses and holding hands. It doesn’t focus on the relationship, so not really a romance book.
I love how descriptive Cori Wamsley is though. It made this book easy to play in my mind. The overactive and overly thinking mind of Tara is absolutely 100% understandable!! I do this most of the time. I like to thank my adhd brain for those moments haha. I like the characters, especially Alika! The passion he has for his culture is so beautiful. I hope to meet an Alika one day when I visit Hawaii..which I absolutely will do one day! I would like to have a book two that shows more of Tara and Hector’s relationship. I feel this one was mostly focused on Tara’s relationship with her late father and her personal growth. Which was also lovely to read about.
I love that there are discussion questions at the end of the book. This section is good for a book club or to answer by yourself.

Exactly What It Looks Like is one of those books that I’m not entirely sure how to feel about. I usually enjoy a good slow burn, but this one moved at a much slower pace than I expected. The first half, in particular, took me a while to get into. I liked the characters and I wouldn't say the book was boring, but I often felt like the story wasn't really moving forward. There were moments when I kept waiting for something to happen that would pull me deeper into the story.
One of the things I enjoyed most was the dialogue, as well as the letters Tara's father left behind. The adventure he planned for her turned out to be about more than simply fulfilling his final wish. As Tara followed his letters and retraced the journey he had planned, she also began to understand her father in a different way. It gave her the chance to learn about his life, his experiences, and the person he was outside of being her dad.
The premise itself was something I really liked. Tara travels to Hawaii to scatter her father's ashes, only to discover that his final request is for them to be placed in a volcano. To make that happen, she has to follow the clues and letters he left behind, taking her on a journey that slowly reveals more about the life he lived (away from them). Along the way, Hector, a man from back home, keeps unexpectedly crossing paths with her. As they spend more time together, their relationship naturally begins to develop into something more than friendship.
I just wish the pacing had been a little faster. I found myself having to force myself to pick the book back up at times. I usually have no problem finishinh a book within a couple of hours, but this one took me a full week. I still enjoyed the overall story and what it was trying to say, but the slow progression made it difficult for me to stay fully engaged.
The book also reminded me quite a bit of Mitch Albom's writing style. It has that same reflective, emotional quality, with a slower pace and moments that can feel a little dull. But even when the story dragged, there were still meaningful moments and memorable quotes that made me stop and think.
Overall, I did like Exactly What It Looks Like, but I think I would have enjoyed it more if the pacing had been stronger. The story had a lot of potential, and I appreciated the emotional journey Tara went on, especially as she came to know her father in a way she never had before. It just took me longer than I expected to get there.

My review is a little late but I want to thank Cori Wamsley and Grey's Promotion for the ARC of Exactly What It Looks Like :)
This book takes you on an emotional roller coaster. It's a slow and an interesting ride at the same time. I enjoy a good slow burn but this story moved a slower pace than I thought it would. Full Disclosure, it took me a while to get into the book especially in the first half. I really liked the second half though. I really liked the characters but I felt at times the story wasn't moving forward. It's almost like you were waiting for something to happen and it never did, which made me unable to take a deeper dive into this particular story
One of my favorite parts about this book was the dialogue, as well as the letters Tara's father left. He planned this really cool adventure for her that in the end was a little more complex that expected. Tara followed his letters and got to backtrack through his journey, which made her understand her father in a different light. She got to learn about his life, the experiences he was able to have, and learn about who he was beside being a dad
Tara travels to Hawaii to spread her dad's ashes, only to find out he wants them to be placed in a volcano (mind-blown, literally). In order to accomplish that, she has to follow the clues as well as the letters he left behind. This takes Tara on a journey that over time reveals more about her father's life. Along the way we meet Hector, who is a man from back home. They keep crossing paths and the more time they spend with each other, it develops naturally from a friendship to a romantic relationship
I can usually finish a book in about 24 hours or so, give or take how busy my schedule is but this story took me a few days to finish because of the slower pace. Don't get me wrong there were beautiful moments and quotes that make you think but the progression made it hard to stay full engaged
Overall, I liked Exactly What It Looks Like but if the pacing would've been faster, I probably would've liked it more. I loved the emotional journey Tara went on, that was my favorite part of this entire story especially how she got to learn more about her father in a way she wouldn't have been able to without this adventure she went on. It just took me longer than I expected to really be able to enjoy or dive into this story

There was something so quietly charming about this story. It wasn't your typical romance, and I found myself just enjoying the journey as much as the destination.
Tara's trip to honor her dad's final wishes was emotional without feeling overly heavy, and I loved how the travel aspect gave the story such a unique backdrop. Watching her step outside of her comfort zone while processing her grief made her feel incredibly relatable. Hector was the perfect balance to Tara—patient, funny, and supportive without overshadowing her own growth. Their relationship developed naturally, and I appreciated that the romance never took away from the heart of the story.
The pacing was a little slower than what I usually gravitate toward, especially in the middle, which is why this landed at four stars instead of five. But if you enjoy character-driven stories that focus on healing, self-discovery, and finding love when you least expect it, this one is definitely worth picking up.
Overall, this was a heartfelt, thoughtful romance with beautiful themes about grief, family, and embracing the unexpected. It left me smiling by the end, and I'll definitely be checking out more from Cori Wamsley.

Full disclosure: I'm not much of a romance reader. But a trusted friend who's also a writer recommended this book to me, so I gave it a go.
I'm glad I did. The story is funny (sometimes laugh-out-loud so) and moving at the same time, the characters are well-drawn and relatable, and the development of the romantic relationship feels authentic. For me, the best parts of the book were the vivid descriptions of Hawaii, where main character Tara goes to fulfill her estranged father's instructions that she spread his ashes in a volcano; Tara's growing understanding of her father, a restless wanderer who never seemed to have time for her during his life but who seeks to forge a bond with her after his death; and the scenes that focus on Tara and her romantic interest, which are full of gentle humor and keen observations about how a relationship develops from initial awkwardness to shared goals and dreams. All of the above aspects of the book work well together to create a powerful story about love, second chances, and the rituals that bind us.
So maybe I'm more of a romance reader than I realized--or at least more of a Cori Wamsley romance reader!

This book was ultimately a story about healing, self-discovery, and the complicated bond between a parent and child. Tara's journey through grief, emotional reflection, and personal growth is the true heart of this book, and I enjoyed following her as she slowly became more self-aware while carrying out her father's final wishes.
The romance is a light, charming rom-com with great chemistry between Tara and Hector. Their interactions were sweet, and Hector was an easy love interest to root for. That said, some of the plot devices felt a little convenient. Certain situations that brought the two leads together, along with the third-act breakup, came across as somewhat forced and lacked the emotional depth I was hoping for. Still, they didn't take away too much from my overall enjoyment.
The Hawaiian backdrop was a great part of the book. While the story leans into a tourist's perspective, even with some awareness of the local culture, and readers from Hawaii may notice some cultural inaccuracies or missed nuances, the descriptions of the landscapes and atmosphere were so vivid that I could easily picture myself there. The setting added a warm, escapist quality that complemented the emotional journey. I also enjoyed the supporting cast, who added personality and warmth to the story. Although some of them felt more like narrative devices to move Tara's journey forward than fully developed characters, they still contributed to the overall charm of the novel.

This was such a sweet and funny contemporary romance. There were some heavy topics related to Tara, the FMC,'s father's passing and her history. There was humor mixed in to soften it up. There was some suspense even, trying to sort through why some of the characters were doing certain things, or what the history is with her father. There was no spice, just a sweet slow build relationship.
The writing was superb, you were transported to Hawaii. Everything felt magical, tropical and you could almost feel the breeze and see the flowers. I enjoyed this read more than I expected and would be happy to see what happens next. I am so happy I received this ARC, thank you!

This was such a sweet, feel-good read! 🩷 Even without any spice, I found myself completely invested in the story and rooting for these characters from beginning to end.
What surprised me the most was Hector. 🤯 I spent the entire book trying to figure out how he fit into everything, creating theory after theory…and I was wrong every single time! 😂 I love when a book keeps me guessing, and this one definitely delivered.

This is my first book by this author. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Tara heads to Hawaii take care of her dad’s last wishes by bringing his ashes and put them in a volcano. To get to this, she had to follow a bunch of letters he wrote to her with quests to do. While she is there, she sees a person she knows from back home, and he keeps showing up when she needs some things and support. She also takes this time to find herself and how her dad did care for her even though he had a hard time showing her when he was around. This was a quick read, and a good feel good book with some slow burn vacation romance tossed in.

I had such a good time with this one. I loved the mix of adventure, grief, healing, and romance, and watching Tara honor her dad’s final wishes made the journey feel so meaningful. Hector was an absolute sweetheart, and I loved every time he showed up. Their banter was fun, their chemistry felt effortless, and I couldn’t help but root for them. The travel element made everything feel even more magical, and I loved how each stop helped Tara grow a little more. This is a good story which is an easy to read, slow burn, quick read, with forced proximity, emotions, humour, and love, which leads to an enjoyable, sweet romance.
This is a new author to me, and I must admit I struggled to engage with the story at times, however, I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

This was exactly as advertised: slow burn no spice.
First off I really like all the scenic descriptions, it makes me miss my time in Hawaii. Next, our leads have obvious chemistry which is always a win. I feel like once your a little further into the book the pacing sucks you in. Much like Tara your trying to figure out why her dad skipped out, why he has left this elaborate quest for her to complete upon his death, which was an angle I was not expecting in a rom com. BUT I think we get to know Tara on a deeper lever because of it.

I loved Tara and Hector in this sweet story set in Hawaii. She’s so analytical, so when she receives her father’s last wishes, she’s prepared for all of that to be uprooted. When she gets to Hawaii, Hector just so happens to be there too. It was so cute seeing them navigate things all the while slowly falling for one another. This was filled with grief and healing, and finding love at the least expected time. I had an absolute wonderful time reading this and seeing these two come together. They were so adorable together.

While in Hawaii she encounters a person she met previously at home. Why is he in Hawaii at the same time? Does this have something to do with her dad? Can she recognize the insecurities caused by her father's abandonment? Is there more to the story? This is a fun adventure with a slow burn.

This was such a great read with an immersive tropical backdrop that makes you feel like you're in Hawaii right with Tara. I really enjoyed the mission Tara's deceased and estranged father sent her on, the mystery of what's going on with her love interest, and all the colorful characters she meets along the way. I've thoroughly enjoyed every single one of Cori's books, and this one is a big winner!

I've loved all of Cori Wamsley's books, but this may be my favorite yet.
Warm, funny, heartfelt, and full of hope, it strikes the perfect balance between emotional depth and lighthearted moments. Tara and Hector completely won me over, and I found myself thinking about them long after I finished the book. I already can't wait to see what Cori writes next!

Omg what an adorable story! I loved how the line of progression between Tara and Hector felt natural. It wasn't some rushed, "I fell in love after 3 days" book. It felt real and authentic. Tara was afraid to feel her emotions, but throughout the book, you see her change in such a beautiful way. Definitely worth the read!

This was a really perfect summer beach read. Tara’s journey through honoring her dad and herself was beautiful. I really liked the funny moments of the mishaps of travel while also finding validation in the grief journey that came along with it. Hector was such a cinnamon roll MMC and instantly likeable. If you’re looking for a good vacation romance, pick this up!

Adult vacation romance with forced proximity and he falls first. This was a quick beach read with a splash of adventure and emotional healing. I enjoyed this book. It was filled with sweet friendships and a sweet romance wrapped up with an island setting.
