Mistmoor Academy is a steamy, why choose, dark academy romance featuring Emma Sinclair, Caspian Drake, West Blackwood, Soren Vael, and Kit Morrow.
Emma's life is anything but easy. Her mother died from ovarian cancer leaving behind massive debt, she works as a bartender in a dive bar where she has to deal with the clientele and the pay isn't enough to cover her bills. She's late with her rent and at risk of being evicted, and her car is run down and is far from reliable. What she does have though is determination; she is a survivor. She also happens to have something called ember magic. She can't explain it, but it seems when she gets angry, fire seems to erupt from her hands. It's terrifying, and pretty cool.
One day she receives a mysterious acceptance letter to Mistmoor, a school for students with magical abilities. While she assumed it was a prank, fate leads her there. She becomes a the new student and is roomed with Izzy Rice, an empathic, water fae. Izzy is a lot, but she's awesome and the two quickly become great friends.
As with many private schools, there is usually a group of students who are considered the leaders. At Mistmoor, they are called the Tetrad. They consist of Caspian, a fae, West, a demon, Soren, a dragon shifter, and Kit, a blood mage. They aren't exactly friends but their four bloodlines are the four pillars of the school. When it is discovered that there is something unique about Emma's power, she gains even more unwanted attention, including that of the Tetrad.
This book quickly grabbed my attention and would not let go. The plot, the characters, the chemistry, the tension, ... It was a fun and highly addictive read. It ended on a cliffhanger clearly leaving me wanting more. I am keen to get my hands on the next installment but no word yet on when that might be expected. If paranormal, why choose, academic romances are your jam, I highly recommend checking this one out!

I absolutely devoured Mistmoor Academy’s Smoke and Shadows by Serena Cross and honestly cannot believe this is my first book by her because WOW. I discovered her through a Facebook readers group and soon after received an ARC and was so lucky to have devoured this before it went live.
This book completely consumed my life for an entire night. I stayed up reading until after 4 AM because I physically could not put it down — the kind of book that leaves you useless the next day unless you have an entire pot of coffee nearby. To me, the best books are the ones you simply cannot stop thinking about or stop turning pages for, and this was absolutely one of them.
This dark paranormal reverse harem romance had everything I love in the genre: an intriguing plot, addictive pacing, fantastic world-building, brooding dangerously attractive men, mysterious secrets, and a creepy academy atmosphere that practically dripped with tension. Mistmoor Academy itself felt alive in the best possible way. The changing floors and hidden chamber under the school created an eerie atmosphere that gave me nostalgic magical academy vibes reminiscent of moving the staircases and chamber of secrets in Harry Potter, but with a much darker, more sinister edge. Oh yes! Speaking about chambers beneath the school - there is something ancient and terrifying lurking in the shadows down there that kept me desperate to know more.
Now let’s talk about the main characters:
Emma Sinclair was such an easy protagonist to root for. Her backstory was heartbreaking without feeling overdone. Raised in poverty by a devoted single mother who later died from cancer (Cancer Sucks BTW. Lost a few family members and my mom had the same type as Emma’s mom. Thankfully she is alive and kicking, which endeared me to her more).
Additionally, Emma has spent her life surviving rather than living. Working in a grimy bar surrounded by awful men while trying to make ends meet made her feel grounded and real. So when she experiences a terrifying burst of power and receives the mysterious invitation to Mistmoor Academy, everything changes. Watching Emma slowly realize that the strange occurrences throughout her childhood weren’t coincidences — that she herself is something other than human — was incredibly compelling.
And the love interests? PERFECT reverse harem material.
The Tetrad completely stole the show:
* Caspian Drake — the stoic and aloof yet seductive and dangerous Fae
* West Blackwood — the brooding Demon enforcer with a hidden sweet side
* Soren Vael — the secretly tortured and powerful Dragon Shifter who is a bit of a man whore
* Kit Morrow — the mysterious Blood Fae who is more astute and calculating than he pretends to be.
Each of the guys had distinct personalities and dynamics with Emma, which I really appreciated because sometimes RH books blur the men together. Not here. Every interaction felt unique while still maintaining that overwhelming fiery connection between all of them. Their attraction to Emma is immediate, intense, and addictive to watch unfold. They’re powerful heirs burdened with responsibilities and secrets of their own, which only added more tension and intrigue.
While there is some steam — including an intense sexual encounter with one of the guys and a very sexy 3-way makeout incident— the story focuses far more on Emma’s powers, her dynamic with the guys, her friend Izzy, the mysteries surrounding the academy, and the dark secrets hidden within the school itself. That balance worked perfectly for me because it made the budding romance feel even more meaningful amidst the danger and suspense.
I also absolutely adored Izzy, Emma’s roommate and new best friend. She brought warmth and humor into an otherwise dark atmosphere with her empathic abilities and was such a fun addition to the story.
And THAT ENDING. I need book two immediately because this cliffhanger was downright cruel. I have no idea when the next installment is coming, but I will be waiting very impatiently because I think I may have officially found a new favorite author. If you love dark academy romance, paranormal mystery, powerful supernatural heirs, creepy magical schools, and intense reverse harem dynamics, then Mistmoor Academy needs to be at the top of your reading list.

Ahhhhhhh!!!! I clicked on my page turner so many times hoping to get to the next chapter before I realized that it was actually over.
I received this book as an ARC from the author and I could not be more grateful! I cannot wait for book two to come out!
Mistmoor Academy is FABULOUS read! I absolutely loved it! The Magic, the tension, did I mention the tension?? This is a slow burn 🔥 with an explosive release! Soren!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
I would one hundred percent recommend this book for the fantasy loving, magic wielding readers of the world. This is definitely a steamy 🧖 read! So beware. Pearl clutchers— keep scrolling. But for all the red flag, 🚩 and trigger warning book baddies. You’ll enjoy. It definitely jumps right in. There is so much going on in Emma’s life that we see the raw experience of her life in all the worst parts of a twenty something poor kid who doesn’t have anything.

But seriously all 4 of the Tetrad are giving me the vibes that this is only the beginning. The number of time these men are absolutely feral for Emma is insane! But, what’s below the school? Her mother is gone, but is her grandmother imprisoned below the school? (We don’t know this) this is my speculation. That it’s a distant relative of Emma’s that’s been imprisoned and her mother whisked her away from the world before she was born with the help of her grandmother who was then imprisoned by being the distraction. And the rest of the kids were born after it all happened. So they’re all clueless.
Her unadulterated power is absolutely all consuming! I read this book twice. As I do for most ARCs once for fun, and once for looking things over and reading for editing purposes. And I didn’t want it to end. I can’t help but think there is some foreshadowing with the 4 guys at the Hollow and the 4 pillars of the school and these men throwing themselves at her versus the men who would try to take advantage of her. But….maybe not. It just seems too coincidental.
This book is explicit in all the best ways. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We first meet Emma working in a bar. She is an orphan now. Her mother died recently and she doesn’t know who her father is. But she did inherit a gift, of fire. When she uses her gift, she receives a text saying she has been accepted to Mistmoor Academy. She ignores it. But when her gift consumes her, the Academy comes calling.
We have dark academia, run by four very attractive men who all take an interest in Emma and her gift. Her bloodline is supposed to be extinct, however, here she is with the Sinclair fire, alive. Now living in an academy that basically came to life when she arrived.
There is some good yearning, but the spicy scenes when we get them, wow. The spice is so good.
We have pretty much every supernatural being represented, and in enters Emma to disrupt them all with her wild magic.
This is a book of letting go, embracing one’s power and learning to trust again. Emma is a beautifully broken young woman who find herself surrounded by people who care about her. Izzy, the roommate, is awesome, I love her. She provides the levity the book needs with so many dark happenings.
This book is really good and I look forward to the rest of the series.

I was captivated with Emma's story until the end. I spent most of it on the edge of my seat wondering what was coming next!
This book had secrets, mystery, and suspense. We also had drama, mean girls, a bit of humor, and a few emotional moments.
The tension was off the charts and when we do get the spice its spicy.
So far, I'm loving each of the main characters. I feel like we've barely scratched the surface on who they really are though. Which only makes me more excited to learn more.
I loved Emma too. She is brave, no push over, and resilient. I cant wait to learn more about who she really is too.
I also gotta mention Izzy. She constantly put a smile on my face.

Mistmoor academy
I really enjoyed this well written story, this first book garnered my attention from the start.
You really get drawn into Emma’s life of relentlessly drudgery before her magic explodes out of her to protect her and she wakes up in n Mistmoor academy.
This first book hints at ancient secrets buried below theacademy’s foundations that we get a tantalising glimpse of here, dying to find out Emma’s powers are recognised by the academy and what it all means.
The guys are all equally delicious, can definitely see why her fire calls to Soren, they are red hot together. Hoping to see her with the other guys in the next book, Kit and her would definitely shatter the wards.
So many secrets and unexplained occurrences here, will definitely read this series, I’m invested now

Emma is 21, orphaned and struggling to pay bills, when her surprise magic explodes and she's sent to an academy. Once there, her peers have all grown up knowing they are magic and she is totally ignorant. Her roommate is cute and helpful, but Emma's personality is dark and irritating and her magic is undefined. The four heirs to the powerful families want to figure her out while secretly desiring her. Something strange is confined under the school's basement which Emma's magic awakens leading to the mystery plot. This book needs a continuity editor. Time passes, (2 weeks), then it's only been 3 days. Other plot variations cause confusion. The whole story is just heavy with more thinking than action.

I couldn't read this book fast enough and the cliff-hanger ending made me desperate for the second book! I really enjoyed the mystery and magic throughout the whole book.
Emma's inner monologue is funny and full of sass mix that with Izzy's witty commentary and funny one liners make this a brilliant and easy read. I was giggling the whole way through. I honestly couldn't tell you who my favourite MMC was as they were all so good in their own ways.
This book is definitely a slow burn but the spice is well worth the wait!

Omg so good I read in one day. When Emma gets this strang notification on her phone that she has been accepted to an academy with full scholarship she has questions. And a lot of them. Emma is just a bartender putting up with drunks when they get a little to touchy feels one night and she ends up burning the guys arm just from her touch. Now she really wants to know about her magic that she has. But no more spoilers from me. You just have to read the book and get lost with Emma and her men from school.

This book just sucked me in and wouldn’t let go. Magic, mystery and every paranormal you can think of this book has them all. I absolutely loved Emma, her strength and the banter. The Tetrad, are all very different individual characters and hard to pick a favourite amongst these 4 men. Be warned the book leaves you with many questions and can’t wait to have them answered (hopefully) in book 2. First book I’ve read by this author and already downloaded more.

What a fantastic read. Very well written.
Loved the FMC, she attempts to be so strong and independent, but she does need people.
Izzy is a great character that gives light hearted relief throughout the book.
OMG as for the four MMC, couldn’t choose between them , anyway why would you!!!!!!
Great cliff hanger, can’t wait for the next book to be out.

If you like Wednesday and Zodiac Academy, this book is for you! It was refreshingly cute, funny, and twisty! Addictive and 🌶️🥵.

I loved every moment of this book! There’s fae, demons, shifters, blood mages, vampires, and one bad FMC! All I’m going to say is, she should choose them all!!! I certainly recommend!!! I can’t wait for book 2!!!
