In spite of Oneida's heroic stand against the Chinese steam roller, foreign armies are poised along the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains preparing for the final assault and America's inevitable defeat. For John, turning back the tide will mean going deep behind enemy lines and organizing the very insurgency he fought so hard against in Iraq. But more than that, it'll mean coming to terms with the brutality of war and the realization that sometimes the deepest scars are the ones that can’t be seen.
I gave the first three books in this series 3 stars each but I went with 4 stars with the finale because I really enjoyed the second half of this book. Weber wrapped up his series in a nice way and it ends with a bang. John Mack and his settlement in Oneida make one "Last Stand" with American forces in hopes of repelling the foreign attacks and literally "Turning the Tide" in the American's favor. My only knock is the dialogue is so PG that it's lame. It's literally World War III, Mack is in a battle somewhere when three of his men get killed in a ambush and the best he can say is "Oh my gosh"? I'm not saying that a great novel needs to be littered with cursing, but what I am asking for is realism. Either way, I enjoyed the series and will probably be up for reading more works by William H. Weber. Check these out and judge for yourself.
John Mack has been reinstated in the Army and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. With the Chinese having crossed the Mississippi River and made it to the Appalachian Mountains everyone feels they must do their part to help defeat the enemy. Everyone in the town of Oneida between the ages of 18 and 30 has elected to join. In fact, John’s young son, aged 12 has snuck off to join as well.
Weber's 4th and final novel in the Last Stand Series, Turning the Tide shows us the gruesome horrors of war. With a traitor in their midst, the town of Oneida cast a suspicious eye on almost everyone. Prisoner of war camps set up behind enemy lines and run by the North Koreans are little more than death camps.
I've really enjoyed this series. And I appreciate you bearing with me for posting a review of each book back to back.
The town of Oneida provided hundres of volunteers to the US troop fighting at the west of river Missisipi. John's son and Brandon ran off to join the army volunteers and were taken prisoners of war when the last stand of US Forces was breached.
The retreating US forces took shelter in the town of Oneida and decided to make it a fortress to stop the Chinese forces from moving ahead. John was reinstated to Army and is promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. To counter the chinese threat John fought a Gurilla war behind the enemy lines.
This book is packed with action and brings forward some of the horrors of war. Like the other three books in the series, this book has a steady flow of events and keeps the reader engaged. The naration of the audio book version is very good.
There is non-stop action in this book, so much that there not a lot of character development. The flashbacks to John's mental state just prior to the EMP were distracted and did not add much to the story. I like that John's inclination is to use history as a guide for strategy, but am astonished he thinks the Minutemen were from Kentucky. The Minutemen were from New England and grew out the conflict at Lexington and Concord. Kentucky did not become a state until 1792, well after the Revolutionary War was over. That seems like a really glaring error. I gave it 3 stars just because there is something satisfying about victory in the face of steep odds against the town.
Really wanted to love this series, but in the end just got through it. For readers who enjoy nothing but battle scenes, this would be VERY enjoyable, but I would have liked more in-depth character info and learning how the family coped with daily struggles. Nothing but gunplay and battle grew tiresome. I appreciated the attempt to make John somewhat human, but even that didn’t last long with him being FAR too perfect to be sympathetic.
The novel was interesting, but things were really too optimistic on the battlefield. Events and situations mentioned extensively in the third novel simply vanished. This left us hanging regarding the war, which was still raging at the end. Either there should be a fifth novel in the series or a second series should pick up the tale.
★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will). ★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this. ★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad. ★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time? ★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.
If for whatever reason, I go back and reread a good book, I will change the rating to five-star because I read it again.
I was leary. A lot of apoc books are designed to promote a political Agenda but I don't think this one was or at least I didn't see it. This had strong characters, exciting story line and a progression of events that made sense. Bravo
If you like realistic situations and great characters who are not perfect, but still have the drive to continue. This story is as good as any EOTWAWKI book I have ever read. And I have read a lot.
I thoroughly enjoyed this series. I think the multiple changes between each book kept your attention and keeps the reader from getting bored. I couldn't put the book down, the intensity was overwhelming, I loved the array of diversity. I found a wealth of information on prepping, in all areas, not just from the first book which prepped on material necessities, until the final book that prepped you for the mental we need to sustain in the events that we may encounter. I gave this series a 5 star, I learned what I feel a great asset to numerous preps and I look forward to future reads from this author.
This is the final book in the Last Stand series. In this final installment we see the battle raging across the continental US. What's unique about this story, when compared to many others I have read, is that the good guys don't swoop in and kick the bad guys asses in one grand battle. The battle is realistic and makes reference to many classic military strategies.
I really enjoyed this series from start to finish and will certainly read more from William H. Weber.
I thoroughly enjoyed all four of Wm Weber's books. The books started with surviving am EMP attack with survival tips to the second book with outdoor survival tips. Then on to books 3-4 which showed how a tight knit community can rally together and actually fight the enemy and turn the tide. Very well written...Highly recommend!
Loved this conclusion of the series. Great characters, nice story with lots of action kept me reading till the end. Looking forward to read more books of this author
Its been a while since I've found a book so engaging and thrilling. Had read the Long Road to Survival Books and never thought it was the same author. Can't wait for the next book!
This book was worth reading the series of books. The characters as in the previous books are very believable and the writing excellent. I will certainly read more of Mr. Weber`s books.
