USA Today bestselling author Falon Ballard takes readers on a whirlwind trip through Denmark, the Netherlands, Scotland, France and Italy in this fated mates story of two people brought together by their grandparents.
Sometimes the journey to true love means going the extra mile.
Lake Walker has always felt the most comfortable at home, near her grandmother her biggest supporter and closest confidante. But when Ava asks Lake to do her a favor, Lake has no idea that she's about to be forced horribly out of her comfort zone. Ava, unfit to travel, needs Lake to take her spot on a trip to Europe where she was set to meet her paramour from her twenties. They'd fallen in love during one momentous summer, and when their time was up, they promised to meet again fifty years later.
Reluctantly, Lake agrees under the condition that as soon as she delivers Ava's message, she will catch the first plane back to the U.S. But life (and her grandmother) have other plans. Because it isn’t her grandmother’s first love who shows up, but his shockingly attractive Italian grandson Luca.
After the surprise fades, Lake and Luca decide to follow in their grandparents’ footsteps, touring through Europe. And along the way, they discover a love story of their own. But Lake has to go home to America, and Luca is too busy dealing with his family business to have time for love. Will they be able to find a way back to each other, or will they end up just like their grandparents did, all those years ago?

Man, this book could have been so good but sadly, it fell short for me!
What I loved: - the premise: gallivanting around Europe? Love. With a cute Italian boy?! Even better. - the family connections: love the grandma/grandpa aspect, especially since my own Oma and Opa came directly from the Netherlands. Makes me miss them! - Luca: what a patient and kind man!! He loved and cared for Lake so well and was so understanding with her past and obvious hesitations.
What I didn’t like: - Lake: girl, I needed you to stand up for yourself a little bit!! You can share your feelings and put up boundaries with your crazy family! - the smut!!!!!: oh my gosh I absolutely cannot. The Netherlands stop?! 100% unnecessary and so cringy and weird!! And the constant talk about it? Please just stop. All the sexulaized yearning was way too much. I was so uncomfortable and I skipped through it so I just got glances here and there, I can’t imagine reading it all. - the cheating trope with the ex husband and sister: gosh I hate them both so much. Her sister was so childish and the fact that her mom was so supportive? Come onnnn. I hated it so much.
This book could have been SO GOOD without all the smut. Just stick to yearning and good ole fashioned flirting and tension!
Okay I’m done now. SO sad about this, could have been a favorite!

Lake is our main character. Her sister has an affair with her husband (she catches them in bed together) and then they get married… and Lake is IN THEIR WEDDING??? But obviously she’s unhappy about it. I’m sorry, what the f? Girl needs a therapist and BOUNDARIES! Why the hell would she agree to be in her sister’s wedding???
Anyways, once I managed to move on from that, it was cute! Chemistry between Lake and Luca was good. I liked their travels together. I feel like Lake learned a lot about herself as well!

Well folks, Falon Ballard did it again with another amazing romance story that I couldn’t put down! I seriously loved the whole premise of this book and all the relationships along the way. And there were definitely some *unique* aspects of this one that made me love the tension between Lake and Luca even more (iykyk). Plus we got the perfect setting of a Europe trip and I felt like I was in the book with these characters.
The only real criticism I have with the story is that sometimes Lake seemed a lot younger than she actually was. The beginning of the book said she was 35 and sometimes she seemed to be in her early 20s - maybe this was intentional since Ava was around that age during her Europe trip?
If you want to feel all the emotions, and I mean you WILL feel ALL the emotions with this one, while taking a Europe vacation, I definitely recommend it!

Review of advance reader copy received from NetGalley
A promising premise that falls flat on several points, namely character and setting. Neither of the protagonists seem to have any personality whatsoever, and a story that spans six weeks and several countries should be rich in setting but is dull in this case. This had a lot of potential, it just didn’t reach it.
This is hands down my FAVORITE Falon Ballard book, and it isn't even close. I had such a good time reading this. It was adorable, and romantic and just made me so happy. Before I wax poetic about this book, you must know that it was one of my favorite reads this year!
I absolutely LOVED the whole premise! Two scheming grandparents basically setting up their grandchildren decades after their own love story? I mean... come on, this is fate and kismet if you ask me. The entire story had this "invisible string" feeling to it, like Lake and Luca were always meant to find each other, and I love that is was fate for them to meet and be together.
I honestly think part of why I loved this so much is because it reminded me of one of my all time favorite storylines from Brothers & Sisters, a beloved TV show of mine from back in the day. Sarah goes to France for work, isn't looking for love after a messy divorce with cheating, and ends up falling head over heels for the HOT French guy, Luc. This felt like that story all over again, except this time it was Italy... and Luca. Even their names are similar! If you know, you know. 😂
I loved following them all over Europe! Denmark, Amsterdam, London, Scotland for the Outlander filming locations (which... same, Lake! As someone who is completely obsessed with Jamie Fraser, I would've done the exact same thing 😂), Paris, and then finally Praiano, Italy. The different settings intertwined with the blossoming love story between Lake and Luca was SO good!
Luca was such a sweetheart! He cared about Lake so much, respected her, and their chemistry was AMAZING. That scene in Amsterdam after they accidentally witnessed the live sex show... WHEW. 👀 The tension was absolutely delicious and I just could not get over the WANTING and the pure tension. It was spicy but also they hadn't even kissed yet, so... you can imagine.
Ava was an absolute ICON and a diva, and as Lake's grandmother, she served as a very important piece to this story, especially given her own international whirlwind romance. I loved her so much. Her whole plan wasn't just about helping Lake find love, it was about showing her that she deserved an epic love story too, and I thought that was such a beautiful gift to give her granddaughter after everything she knew that Lake had been through. I loved her letters too, I nearly cried.
There was even the one bed trope, which I will literally never get tired of. 😉
The only thing that kept this from being a perfect read for me was that Lake brought up what her ex-husband and sister did to her... a lot. I completely understand why because that's what pushed her to take this trip in the first place, but after a while it started to feel a little repetitive. I was just ready for her to let them go and focus on the incredible man standing right in front of her! She eventually did, which I was glad to see.
And OMG... Luca's nickname for Lake. I need to talk about this because I was also confused by what he meant, but when his sisters explained it... I just about died. The meaning behind it was so thoughtful, so romantic, and so specific to her. Truly incredible and one of my favorite parts.
Suffice it to say, this book just had me in my feelings in the best possible way. It's romantic, adventurous, funny, hot, and it's so emotional and beautiful in so many ways. I seriously cannot recommend this one enough! I loved it so much, and it's easily my favorite Falon Ballard book yet.
Thank you to NetGalley, Falon Ballard, and Putnam for the eARC of this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Lake’s life has fallen apart. When her ex husband marries her sister, whom he’d been having an affair with, immediately following their divorce, Lake is left living a half life. Stuck in the same town she grew up in, teaching at the same school she went to, and living in a small studio apartment, she’s become a shell of who she used to be. When her scheming grandmother asks her to go to Europe in her place to meet the man she had a summer fling with when she was young, Lake balks at the opportunity. After much cajoling, she agrees to go, but when she arrives, it’s not her grandma’s former fling standing at their meeting spot, but his very hot grandson.
Lake is a better person than I am. If my sister and husband were having an affair, married after our divorce, and were completely supported by mother, I’d have gone no contact with my family. Honestly, who needs them? It would’ve been much better for her mental health in my opinion, but I digress. This gave me Letters to Juliet vibes in the best way. I loved the European adventure. It gave me such wanderlust. Lake and Luca are both likable characters. Their chemistry burned the pages. Their attraction was instant. Ballard does a good job of showing us the development of their romance. They open up to each other and allow themselves to be vulnerable with each other. I especially enjoyed the scenes with their heart to heart conversations. They were upfront and honest and there was never any miscommunication (Thank God). And the spicy scenes… chef’s kiss!
My only gripe is that I felt her mother was a bit cartoonish in her selfishness. There could’ve been more nuance to her character. The lack of sensitivity she showed Lake during that horrific time in her life was appalling. What Leah did to Lake is not okay and not something she needs to just accept and get over. In fact, neither of them apologized to Lake for their behavior. It’s also a pet peeve when people make the excuse of “well you too were at fault for the divorce”. It’s a bullshit excuse when people cheat. Yes, it does take two people to make a relationship work, and if it’s not working it’s best to part ways, but that doesn’t excuse cheating on your partner. Especially, with their sibling. Like I said, I wish Lake would’ve stood up to them and cut them off, but I suppose distancing herself from them and seeing them infrequently is the next best thing.
This was a fun book, and the European setting made me want to book a trip today. It’s the perfect end of summer read.
Summary: Lake has never been one to take risks, but when her beloved grandmother, Ava, asks her for a favor that involves a European vacation, she reluctantly agrees to deliver a message to a man from Ava’s past. Instead, she’s greeted by his grandson, Luca, and the two decide to retrace their grandparents’ love story across Europe. As they follow in their footsteps, they begin to wonder if history just might be repeating itself.
Thoughts: I don’t know if this was just a case of the right book at the right time, but LAWD… this was AMAZING. I can’t remember the last time I felt so desperate to read a book in one sitting, but this one simply would not release me from its claws.
It is quite offensive that I have to wait until March to own a physical copy of this book. We should not have to spend such a long time apart from one another.
This book had me cackling, crying, and swooning like a schoolgirl. I was chasing the story like it was a thriller, but instead it was a romance absolutely overflowing with heart.
The settings were breathtaking, the pacing was a masterpiece, and the characters… THE CHARACTERS. They were so wonderfully written that I was making my husband stop what he was doing every few chapters just so I could read my favorite passages out loud to him.
I was completely unprepared to fall so deeply in love with this book. Part of me wishes I could forget it just so I could experience it for the very first time all over again. The other part of me knows that’s an impossible ask because this story is simply too unforgettable.
Please preorder this book. You deserve the joy it’s going to bring into your life. Thank me later.
Thank you to the author and publisher for providing an advanced copy. My feedback is given voluntarily and honestly.
I really enjoyed reading this! It was the perfect combination of light-heartedness and depth. Lake has been through a lot and seems to be stuck in her life. When her grandmother gives her the opportunity to go to Europe, Lake begrudgingly agrees. She meets Luca, the son of her grandmother's first love/the one that got away. Together, they decide to retrace their grandparents' steps through different European locations.
I really liked Lake - she has a lot of reasons to be angry and sad, but she nevertheless persists, choosing to look at the world with love and an open mind (she just needed a little nudge from her diva of a grandmother). She is absolutely devoted to her grandmother, and it was nice to see Lake find someone for herself who treasures her and treats her well. And that person is Luca. From the beginning, it's clear that Luca is besotted with her. Their chemistry is amazing and they have an instant attraction to each other. There's definitely a lot of spice (that Amsterdam scene omg). But I really liked how they got to know each other on a deeper level and ultimately found a deeper emotional connection with each other rather than just a physical connection. They understand each other's commitment to their families, even when it takes them apart from each other. The yearning and tension were INTENSE and it was so obvious that they were perfect for each other. I definitely teared up at some points because I just wanted them to be happy and together. Also Luca's nickname for her is so cute - I was so giddy when the meaning behind it was revealed.
Foreign travel romances/vacation fling tropes have not really been my thing, but this one was a really good read and I know it will stay with me for a long time.
Thank you to G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for the ARC!
Falon Ballard writing swoony, cross-country, multi-generational love?? Sign me up!
I went into this one expecting a cute, low-stakes rom-com and came out with something so much warmer than I anticipated. The premise alone had me. Lake is such a relatable heroine — a homebody forced completely out of her shell for someone she loves, which instantly made me root for her. And the whole premise built around her grandmother’s fifty-year-old promise to reunite with a lost love, gave the book this gorgeous layered quality: it’s not just “girl goes on trip, girl falls in love,” it’s a story about legacy, about the ways our grandparents’ choices echo into our own lives, about what it means to keep a promise across decades. What I loved most was the emotional connection between Lake and Ava. Their relationship reads as genuinely tender, not just a plot device to get our heroine on a plane. You really feel why Lake would upend her whole comfort zone for this woman. I’m a sucker for that kind of generational parallel and Ballard handles it with so much heart.
Where it lost a star for me was the pacing in the middle stretch — a few of the country-hopping sections felt more like postcard moments than fully lived-in scenes, and I wanted a little more time to breathe in a couple of the locations before we were whisked to the next one.
But honestly? None of that stopped me from grinning through most of this book, or from tearing up more than once at the grandmother’s storyline. It’s cozy, it’s swoony, it’s got just the right amount of ache mixed into the sweetness. If you love a rom-com with real emotional stakes, this should be your next read.
A massive thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Come Away with Me. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I was absolutely thrilled to receive an advanced copy of this book. Falon Ballard has such a gift for writing romances that are swoony and heartfelt while never shying away from life’s messy realities.
I rushed home from work, poured myself a glass of wine, and stayed up way past my bedtime because I couldn’t put this book down. I laughed, I cried, and was wiping the steam off my glasses!
After experiencing the biggest betrayal of her life, Lake is left trying to heal in the small hometown where everyone knows her story. When her grandmother, Ava, sprains her ankle, she asks Lake to take her place on a trip to Copenhagen to reunite with Marco—her great love from her twenties. They had made a promise decades ago that if they were both single in their eighties, they’d meet again at the spot where they first fell in love.
Instead, Lake meets Marco’s grandson, Luca, who has been sent in his grandfather’s place. Their connection is immediate, and what starts as a three-day trip turns into “just one more day” and “just one more city” as neither of them wants their time together to end.
Watching Lake follow in her grandmother’s adventurous footsteps and silence the voice of self-doubt was beautiful. Seeing Luca and Lake retrace the path of their grandparents’ love story through Europe felt like pure magic, with a little matchmaking from the previous generation along the way.
The writing flowed effortlessly, the romance was heartfelt, and this story completely swept me away. It’s one I’ll be thinking about for a long time.
Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam for the free advanced copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am a huge fan of Falon Ballard, and this book is proof that her writing keeps getting better and better.
I loved this story so much. I connected with Lake so hard I felt like I was her. With every destination her and Luca travelled, I could visualize it completely. I’ve never visited any of these places, but I feel like I have.
Did anyone else want to reach through the book and slap Leah, Aaron, and The mom? Goodness they were annoying. I actually bumped the book from 5 stars to 4 because I wanted some repercussions for this characters. The way they treated Lake and betrayed her…yes, you can praise Lake for being the bigger person and forgiving them, but that doesn’t mean I have to be!
Lake was such a strong FMC. She cares about everyone to the point of putting their happiness before her own. I love her connection to Ava, her grandmother. I have the same connection to my Grandpa, so there were definitely parts where I could relate and other times where I balled my eyes out.
Luca…*Sigh* I need a Luca. Anyone want to finance my trip to Italy to find one? Just kidding, but seriously he was perfect. I love how he knew exactly what Lake needed and helped her expand her horizons. Actually, they both did that for each other. He was there to help her gain the strength to learn to love again, and Lake helped him gain the courage to take his family’s company to the next level.
This book had me hooked. You can never go wrong with a Ballard book. I loved the slow burn that was a raging inferno once they let themselves be together. It’s definitely true love.
*An ARC was received in exchange for an honest review.
Come Away With Me was a sweet summer read about two people who meet as stand-ins for a second-chance meeting between their grandparents, fifty years after they shared a whirlwind trip in which they fell in love. Although Lake (for her grandmother) and Luca (for his grandfather) both start out as reluctant participants in the trip, they eventually come around and embark on a journey of their own.
But it's not easy. Lake is coming off of fresh heartbreak and also struggles with a lot of guilt over doing things for herself and being away from her grandmother. Luca struggles with the expectations of taking over the family business from a reluctant patriarch. And, they live thousands of miles apart. How could this possibly work?
Although there's a lot to like about this book, my favorite part of this story are the letters Lake's grandmother writes to her. She's such a great character!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Putnam for an ARC in exchange for my honest assessment of this work.
I absolutely loved this book and I think this is Falon's best book so far. The setting was perfect, I mean, who wouldn't want to explore Europe with a hot Italian? The chemistry was off the charts between Lake and Luca and Ava was a hoot! If you are looking for a heartfelt romance that you can't put down, look no further and grab this book when it releases! This book has been one of my favorite reads so far this year.
In Come Away with Me, Lake is asked by her grandmother Ava for a huge favor. Ava ends up hurting her ankle and can't go on her European vacation. Originally, Ava was supposed to meet up with the first love of her life but since she is hurt she asks Lake to go in her place. Lake agrees to go only to deliver Ava's message then come back home. It turns out, both grandparents had the same idea about sending a grandchild because instead of Ava's first love, it is his grandson Luca. They end up taking their grandparents vacation and start a love story of their own.
Thank you Netgalley and Putnam | G.P. Putnam's Sons for this arc!
I am NOT a romantasy fan, and Toe to Toe also wasn’t my favorite, so I was SO happy to find a new Falon Ballard that was more in line with her previous books! This was a sweet rom com, even if that premise was fairly unbelievable. I LOVED the European setting.
I don’t want to spoil the book, but there were many things I found just a little too unbelievable (but I know that’s often the case in rom coms): just the premise of how the trip came to be, making the decision to stay, Ava’s secrets, and the fact that Lake never, not once, stopped to think about practicalities such as a job and how she’d support herself.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review. This one wasn’t my favorite of Ballard’s but I did really enjoy it, even with my criticisms.
Falon, you have done it again!!!! Truly one of my favorite rom-com writers out there and her newest book is no exception!
Our FMC, Lake, needs a break from her small town life and the drama in it. Her family( minus her grandmother, Ava) is literally the worst and she needs a break. Ava offers Lake an all-expenses paid trip to do a task for her that she can’t do herself which turns out to be the change Lake needs in her life.
Luca and Lake are perfect together. He makes Lake feel seen, appreciated, and adored. Their chemistry gave me butterflies and I love how much of a softie Luca was.
Ava’s commentary and flair for the dramatic added fun to Lake’s life and their relationship was wonderful. Her letters made me cry because you could tell how much Ava wanted the best for Lake.
Falon Ballard has been somewhat of a hit-or-miss author for me in the past, but the promise of a whirlwind European romance book drew me in as I have just returned from my first trip to Italy. I found the book a bit slow to start - mostly due to how infuriating I found the the family dynamics of our main female character - but once we actually got to Europe, things really clicked into gear. The tension Ballard builds between Lake and Luca is utterly delicious and getting to witness these two people slowly begin to break down their walls in order to let love in ended up being a surprisingly emotional journey. I'm happy that I finally have a hit from Ballard and I hope to have more in the future!
Thank you to NetGalley and G.P. Putnam's Sons for an ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review!
the pros: i loved the mature-ness of the relationship between lake and luca. there was no bullshit fights or meaningless, usual tropes to cause conflict.
i thought it was lovely they tried recreating the old photos in the same locations and that they even made it to brussels in the end.
negatives: while i do agree ava was everything to lake, there was nothing keeping her in connecticut, especially her horrible family. there shouldn’t have been a question or second that lake didn’t say yes to moving to italy.
the other thing i really dislike about the entire book was having NO food descriptions whatsoever. you’re touring around europe and the best the author can do is “meal, dinner and beer.” i want to hear about every food detail possible in books that travel the world.
Arc review 3.5 ⭐️ I was so exited to have received an arc for this book. Falon is a go to author for a cute, fun read and Come Away With Me did not disappoint.
Lake has been struggling for over a year because of a terrible divorce which caused family issues. Her grandmother, Ava, convinces her to go to Europe to meet the man she had met years ago. Instead of the Ava’s former Italian lover there to meet her, it’s his grandson, Luca.
This book was pretty predictable but still a fun, easy read. I will say I felt like we only got our main character on a superficial level. I had zero feel for Luca. The person with the most character was Ava.
Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam Publishing for the eARC of this book.
The first few pages where the FMC was part of a wedding of her ex-husband and her sister was just weird and cringey and started me off on the wrong foot. I did like all of the European cities and how they were described by the author. That really was a high point in the buck. Overall, I just didn’t really like the main female character, but Luca was pretty great. I’m just not sure if this book was for me, but I did think it was three stars.
This was a super cute trip through Europe. I liked Ava and Lake's relationship and Luca was the epitome of the caring, supportive man. I thought that Lake needed to be less of a doormat with her family, especially her mother (and we're supposed to believe that she's so supportive of the sister and dismissive of Lake's feelings) as that whole thing was a bit ridiculous. Overall though, a fun summer read that will make you want to travel!
Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
4.5/5 ⭐️ This book was an emotional rollercoaster in the best way. Between the difficult time that the main character faces from the start of the book and the things that come up throughout, there’s plenty to reflect on. Add in travel and an Italian stranger, and there’s a ton of wonder, excitement, and romance to counteract the hard times. What a fun adventure! Thanks to NetGalley and Putnam for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
I absolutely loved this! The setup felt really unique, the writing was amazing (as always), and I loved how well crafted all the characters were. Her relationship with Ava was especially adorable, and the whole story had so much heart. This book genuinely made me emotional (I did cry), Falon Ballard continues to be one of my favorite authors, and this was yet another slay. :)
The book is a quick and easy read, but I definitely preferred All I Want Is You. The main characters fell I little flat here, and I found Lake's family way too over-the-top, they felt like straight-up caricatures. Plus, since most of the book takes place traveling around Europe, I wished the settings had played a bigger role, instead it kind of just felt like a checklist of places without much actual description.
When I saw this book I had to immediately request it as the cover is so cute! Reading this was a super wild, sweet, fun time. I loved the unique way Lake and Luca met/got closer, I loved reading about the travels around Europe, and I loved Ava!!! This was genuinely such a fun read and one of my fav romances so far of the year.
Loved this one. What stood up most is how imperfectly Lakes life feels. No glossy, problem free existence. She deals with real struggles, setbacks, and has everyday complications that make her character feel human. Love doesn’t erase hardship. If you are looking for a romance that goes beyond surface level, this one is for you. I highly recommend this book.
Absolutely perfect beach read. This book was an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish. I laughed. I cried. I swooned. I got wanderlust. I missed my grandma. But gosh I loved it. Such a beautiful story with a precious relationship between a granddaughter and her grandma. And an equally amazing romance with a likely gorgeous Italian man. I adore everything Falon Ballard writes.
A main character can make or break a book and unfortunately Lake is just sort of a door mat for most of this book. I loved the European settings and thought the spice was good. Unfortunately something was missing to make this a book I would suggest to others.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this E-Arc in exchange for an honest review.
This is probably my favorite Ballard book. While some of her others fell flat, this was such a charming read. I loved both main characters and the travel! Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam for the arc!
