You thought you knew the whole story... ...but you’ve only heard one side.
Introducing BETWEEN SKY & SEA: the unmissable experience of Zevayr & Mayah’s journey through Zevayr’s eyes—where every moment hurts even more.
Relive the unputdownable story of BETWEEN TIDES & THUNDER from Zevayr’s perspective. This highly-requested POV flip will make you see everything differently. If the first book left you devastated—this one will annihilate you.

He was raised to destroy her kingdom. Now she’s the only thing he refuses to conquer. Prince Zevayr of Arbinj has built his name on fear and blood. As the Dark Commander, he is a weapon first and a man second—honed for war and hollowed out by loss. The battlefield has taken everything from him, including his closest friend, leaving behind something sharp and cold, more monster than man.
When he’s ordered to escort his brother’s betrothed back to Arbinj, he expects an inconvenience. He does not expect her.
He doesn’t hesitate. He doesn’t regret. And he certainly doesn’t have room for love. Mayah of Tundrayn is the crown princess of the kingdom that killed his friend—and everything he was raised to despise. Yet she’s defiant where she should yield, soft where he is sharp. She was raised to see him as a monster, but she looks at him like she sees the man beneath the Dark Commander’s cloak. As they travel across rebel-torn lands, Zevayr’s icy barriers begin to melt, and he does the unthinkable—he loses his heart.
Back in Arbinj, where the glittering court is eager to see Mayah fall, Zevayr faces a new war—one that demands he choose between his duty ... and her. Because the harder he falls, the deeper the knife twists in his heart—and Zevayr learns the truth doesn’t always set you free.
The question is not whether Zevayr will defy his kingdom—but how much of it is he willing to burn for her?
Leena Kazak has been spinning stories since she was ten years old, when she wrote her first short story and never looked back. A lifelong reader, she’s devoured everything from fantasy and thrillers to historical fiction and contemporary romance—but these days, she’s happily tumbled down the romantasy staircase and shows no sign of climbing out. (Send help).
She writes fantasy romance with fierce heroines, impossible choices, and immersive worldbuilding. When she’s in the thick of drafting, Leena wakes up between 4:30 and 5 a.m. to chase that magical, half-asleep window when words flow freely and the world is still quiet.
Leena lives in the frigid Northeast with her brooding, handsome husband and their two adorable, half-feral sidekicks. (Leena and her husband are actually the sidekicks, but don’t tell her kids that.)
5 stars obviously because that was everything I needed! I always love a male POV chapter so getting a whole book of Zev’s POV was like Christmas came early. The yearning, Zev’s thoughtfulness, his inner monologue, and seeing that moment at 56% from his perspective was absolutely gut wrenching, delicious, and satisfying. Yes this is the same story at BTAT but you get so much new information in this you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not reading it. Loved it so much. Perfection.
I LOVED Between Tides and Thunder and it left me wanting more. This surprise companion novel, Between Sky and Sea is everything I didn’t know I needed! Getting this companion novel in Zev’s POV was so so good! It tore my heartstrings in the best way! 💙🤍
This was so fun to be back in this world! Getting a full book of Zevs pov was amazing! It’s also somehow been 6 months since I read between tides and thunder, which made it even better because some parts I forgot about! The yearning was unreal!! My heart was aching for zev i felt like it could burst! Overall, it was fun to get to read the story fully in zevs POV! I can’t wait to see what Leena does next!
I was so excited to experience the story from his POV, and I was completely emotionally invested. Even though I already knew what was going to happen and had essentially been spoiled by the first book, I was still hooked from beginning to end.
That being said, I still think the way Mayah treated him was absolutely awful, and I can’t get over the terrible decision she made. Seeing everything through his perspective softened a lot of her actions because he was so deeply in love with her, but honestly… it still doesn’t sit right with me 😵💫!
Overall, though, this was a great companion to the first book. It added a lot of depth to the story and made the emotional moments hit even harder.
As a companion piece, this is easily a 5-star read 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.
As soon as I found out we were getting a whole book from Zev's point of view, I immediately dropped what I was reading and dove into this one.
This book adds so much depth to both the characters and the story. One of my only issues with the first book was that the journey portion felt a little drawn out, which is why I gave it 4.5 stars instead of 5. Here, that same journey feels much more meaningful and significant. Maybe it's because we already know where the story is headed, but every step seemed to carry more weight. Plus, the new sweet moments between Zev and Mayah were absolutely adorable.
What I appreciated most is that this never felt like a simple retelling. It reads seamlessly and gives us so many new moments with the characters. We get to see exactly how Zev falls in love with her. Yes, there's attraction, but it's clear that it's everything about Mayah that makes him fall so deeply.
That said, this is very much a companion novel. It works because it expands an already well-developed story and gives us a fresh perspective on events we thought we knew. The twists and revelations from the first book don't carry the same impact here because we already know what's coming. They simply can't hit the same way they did the first time around.
As a companion piece, this is easily a 5-star read 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. On its own, though, it doesn't stand as strongly as the first book—and I believe that's exactly what it was intended to do. The original story still delivers the stronger emotional and plot impact. As a standalone it would probably only be 4🌟.
If you've already read the first book and are considering this one, I honestly think a tandem read would be the ultimate experience.
One of the strongest aspects of this book is how much more we understand Zev. His pain is heartbreaking. We see how abandoned and alone he felt, and when he believed Mayah had betrayed him, it became almost too much for him to bear. Understanding his perspective adds so much emotional depth to his character.
The extra epilogue featuring Zev and Mayah was a lovely bonus and gives readers a sweet glimpse into their future together.
By the end, this book made me want to reread the first novel all over again. If I ever do, a tandem reread of both books would be an absolute treat.
This was such a fantastic surprise and this book was an incredible companion to Between Tides & Thunder!! The first book has excellent rereadability because of the reveal at the end (which I didn’t even see coming btw!!) but having this entire book from his pov was like a dream come true.
I used to play a lot of otome games, which (if you don’t know) are Japanese romance games. Usually they come with a bunch of different love interests to choose from and if you play all of the different routes you get the story told in full. Male POV chapters are crucial to the story, so it's kind of what I came to expect. But when I came into the book community and found that most books were either told from the fmc’s pov or dual pov with only a few important chapters included from the mmc’s pov, I was disappointed but like I accepted it, you know? I didn’t even realise how much I missed and craved and yearned for an entire male pov book until this was announced. Leena, you have made my silly little heart so full and happy with this book!!! I feel like it was written for me 🥹
Anyway it was just as excellent as Between Tides & Thunder. I knew all the twists and turns but the events from Zev’s perspective give so much insight into his feelings and actions. Do I still think he could have learned to trust without his powers? Yes. But I can see why he had such a hard time doing that. This is such an excellent example of the same story being told from two different viewpoints, and how well rounded that makes it, because it felt like a different story at some points. It was just amazing. The steam was off the charts!!!! The only complaint I have is that I wish there had been a proper spicy scene at the end, we got all that buildup and it ended up being not very descriptive, more suggestive. The tension though? The yearning?? Out of this world. Absolute perfection. That man is GONE. Down horrendous with a capital D. Never has a man been so pathetically smitten with a woman in the history of time.
Read Between Tides & Thunder first, do NOT try and tandem read if you haven’t finished because the ending will be spoiled immediately. I will recommend this book with my whole chest, my whole BODY, until I’m ash in a jar. READ IT!! TBR NOW!!
Only Leena Kazak could take a book that already wrecked us and write the same story from a different pov and wreck us even more! BTAT- my jaw was on the floor from the plot twists BSAS- my jaw was on the floor from the complete and utter devastation that we got from Zevs perspective.
Look yearn up in the dictionary and Zevs name should be there. I didn't know I could love him more... turns out I can. He has permanently solidified himself in my top MMCs of all time. He can call me baby anytime
I will need shelf copies and I will need a tandem read! These books are now part of my soul.
**A Note to Readers: this is a companion book to Between Tides and Thunder. It is the same story but a different POV. Please read BTAT FIRST**
You know how you’re reading a single POV book and you just know that the FMC has got it all wrong in her head and you’d give anything for the MMC’s POV? Well Leena said “Surprise babes! Here you go!” An entire freaking book of Zev. Bless.
I loved all 500 pages of this just as much as I did Between Tides and Thunder. Super fans will love having 100% Zev’s POV. The man was down BAD for Mayah long before we even knew. We get insight into behind the scenes stuff that didn’t include Mayah. Especially the political intrigue side of things between Zev and his brother and father.
Where things hurt the most was Zev’s POV after the shocking plot twist. My heart just broke over and over again for him. Boy did he have so many things wrong.
Zev was already a book boyfriend contender but this companion book really sealed the deal. Thank you Leena!
This book was everything I needed! Where BTAT had my jaw on the floor and me falling out of my seat, BSAS ripped my heart out, stomped on it, and then gave me a big hug. The emotional damage was definitely worse knowing what was coming and reading it from Zev’s POV. My poor sweet lover boy.
I loved the additional secrets and details we got that weren’t included in BTAT, and I loved the bonus epilogues! Maya’s and Zev and the whole Broken Tempest Duet will always have my heart!
Between Sky & Sea is the story from Between Tides & Thunder, but told from the MMC, Zevayr's, POV.
Zevayr is a powerful storm weilder and warrior. As the second son of the King, he is tasked with escorting the princess of a neighboring kingdom to his home so she can marry his older brother and secure an alliance between the kingdoms. What he never expected was to fall for her...
This companion novel is full of angst and yearning, heartbreaking revelations and introspection, and rounds out the overall story so well. With the first novel, Mayah, the FMC, told the story, and I desperately wanted to know what Zev was thinking and feeling. Now, I know, and I am not at all disappointed! If you love fantasy with intrigue, push and pull, and unlikely pairings, I would highly recommend reading Between Tides & Thunder and Between Sky & Sea!
It was hard to give it this because I loved between tides and thunder soooooooooo much. However I think had she wrote this as a duet with both POVs it would have been 6 stars for both. Hearing part two and three from Zevs point of view was everything. HOW THIS MAN LOVES HER!!!! *swoon*
4.25⭐️ - The story is so much funnier from his POV - His POV is much more emotional because he falls first for her and the entire book he’s guided by his feelings for her, his self loathing magnified by the hurt he’s caused her, as opposed to her drive for vengeance in her book
Loved reading this story from Zev’s POV! I just wish I had waited a while instead of reading it right after Between Tides & Thunder because it was repetitive.
I loved Between Tides & Thunder so much that this book fell flat for me. I was expecting more from Zev’s POV and was disappointed that the book was almost entirely the same, down to the dialogue. I don’t see how this could be a tandem read without major spoilers. BSAS might have worked better as a short novella type compilation of our favorite Zev scenes - first time they met, power sharing aftermath lol, the wedding, etc. Leena’s writing in BTAT was so well done that I already grasped how Zev felt and re-reading from his POV was repetitive. I really liked the epilogue though, because it was new material.
I absolutely DEVOURED book one, so I was really excited to read this from Zev’s perspective. I liked seeing more of what was going on in his head and what he was up when he wasn’t with Mayah, but I don’t feel like this book gave us that much more than the first. This was still good, but I wanted more Zev from it instead of more of a copy and paste of book one.
I love the MMC POV when it full of yearning and anguish and this delivers on that! There were some chapters that just felt like a straight copy from Between Tides and Thunder where I would like some more developed insight into Zev’s thoughts. But overall I enjoyed it and the different perspective added to the experience of reading the first one.
While I loved between tides and thunder, im not sure i needed a 400+ page book from the MMCs pov. It was well written, I just found myself bored rereading the exact same scenes after just reading BT&T. I think i would have just liked some POV chapters in the first book or even just a few bonus chapters. Do NOT tandem read it will spoil book 1.
"Between Sky & Sea," is a companion novel to "Between Tides & Thunder," except this one is told from Zevayr's point of view and follows the same timeline as the first book.
Zev has been raised as a warrior: a weapon first and foremost, who has had little to say over how his life has unfolded up until this point. Mayah is the inconvenience he didn't expect, and didn't know he needed. When Zev is tasked with escorting his brother's bethrothed from her realm to his, he can't help but be drawn to her fire, and, to let it melt the ice he's built up around his heart.
What to expect: (This is a companion book, read AFTER reading Between Tides & Thunder for the best experience!!)
🌩️Zev's POV 🌊Enemies to lovers to enemies to... 🌩️Thunder daddy 🌊ALL THE YEARNING - the definition of yearn 🌩️Betrayal, heartbreak 🌊Elemental magics 🌩️Warring kingdoms 🌊Forced proximity 🌩️One bed/horse/tent 🌊He falls first (and SOOO hard)
Content warnings: ❗Attempted SA (not by the MMC) ⚠️Violence and torture ❗PTSD, trauma, emotional abuse by a parent ⚠️Explicit sexual content
"Between Sky & Sea" is the best book surprise I've ever gotten. Literally me after finishing "Between Tides & Thunder:" NOOOOO THERE HAS TO BE MORE, I NEED MOOOOOOORE.
When Leena dropped the bombshell that was the surprise release of BSAS?!?! Jaw dropped. Mind blown. Lots of screaming "yes, yes, YASSSSSSSSS!!!"
So. It had a lot of excitement and anticipation to live up to. I'm happy to announce that it absolutely did. You WILL want to read "Between Tides & Thunder" first though. *This* book absolutely reads best after having that first book under your belt.
Zev is a world class yearner folks. And we really get to see it when we get our favorite scenes from his POV. Leena does a lovely job recreating the storyline but from his perspective, without it feeling too repetitive.
I'm not usually one for pet names/terms of endearment, but man, Zev could call me baby any day and I'd be a-ok with it.
Loved it. Loved the first book, great companion book and all around an absolute must read if you read and enjoyed "Between Tides & Thunder."
Okay, so I CANNOT shut up about Between Tides & Thunder. It’s my favorite book of the year so far! (And one of my favorite books in general).😍 When Leena Kazak dropped a surprise release last week of a companion novel from the MMC’s POV. I was SO EXCITED! Between Sky & Sea immediately catapulted to the top of my TBR. I devoured it. I stayed up way too late finshing it last night and you guys, it was perfect.🙌
I had been itching to do a reread of BTAT because I loved it SO much. The only thing that could’ve made me love BTAT even more was if it had been dual POV (to be fair, it definitely made sense why it wasn’t because of all the twists and secrets haha). But now we have the WHOLE BOOK retold from Zev’s POV hehehe! Truly, what a gift to her readers!🥰
We get to see more of what was going on in the times that they were apart so we get more insight into the politics and Zev’s complicated family relationships. We get more of a window into his past and see the grief, guilt, and pain tied to it. We learn more about why Zev says and does certain things, and how his secrets factored in. We get his internal reactions to some of the more shocking twists (your heart will hurt for him😩😭). You get to see how early he fell for Mayah and how he was absolutely DOWN BAD for her. Like, the guy was totally head over heels way before we even realize it in BTAT hehehe (he will have you swooning even more in this book!)🤭
This one will put you on an emotional rollercoaster, even more so than BTAT! Worth it.😅 (LOL, not me tearing up re-reading my highlights a minute ago 😂🙈)
I adore Zev and Mayah and I had such a great time reading Between Sky & Sea! I flew through both books and cannot recommend them enough!😍
If you loved BTAT, this one is definitely worth picking up too! 🤗
*You need to read BTAT before BSAS because there’s a major spoiler right from the start. (So don’t tandem read unless you’ve already read BTAT!)
6 stars! It was perfect. It was everything I didnt know i need when I went into Between Tides and Thunder as a standalone. DONT SKIP this one. Just because you read the book before... this is not a reread! it's not just bonus content, it's officially part of the story now! It gives you so much more depth into our MMC. You get all the pain, yearning and heartbreak straight from his brain! Plus a few new surprises toooo!
READ BETWEEN TIDES AND THUNDER THEN IMMEDIATELY COME BACK FOR THIS ONE
now im off to tandem read them again!
I genuinely didn’t think I could love this more than I already did… but apparently the secret is just handing me the entire story from the MMC’s POV and letting me live in his brain 😭 Thats how you top an already infinity star read!
You’d think knowing the plot would make it less addictive, but I was completely entranced the whole time. Getting inside Zev’s head and watching exactly when (and how hard) he fell was such a treat. All those iconic scenes from the original book hit differently from his perspective, and the added moments we never got before made it feel like a completely new story.
Plus reveals that happened at the end of the book color his perspective in an entirely different way. Suddenly every moment carries more weight, more heartbreak, more meaning. I think I actually cried more reading this than I did the original, which is insane considering I already knew what was coming. But knowing the emotional impact from both sides? Absolutely destroyed me.
But you know we did this to ourselves, we wanted more and Leena delivered, and then proceeded to rip my heart out with Zev’s inner monologue, yearning, and emotional devastation. And yes, I did squelle and kick my feet at the softness and banter too, because this man is down bad in the most thoughtful, aching way.
This didn’t feel like a reread at all! It felt like a full emotional expansion of the story I already loved. And now Zev has officially cemented himself as one of my all-time favorite MMCs. He can absolutely call me 'baby' anytime 😌
It's hard for me to admit but I loved Between Sky and Sea even more than I loved Between Tides and Thunder (okay, it wasn't hard to admit). The twists and turns in Tides and Thunder are of course more interesting but from an emotional and romantic perspective Sky and Sea is a tiny bit better. Maybe because Zev is perfection! Definitely one of the best MMCs of all time (and I'm pretty sure he will forever remain on my book husband list). He yearns like no other, he's the King of Yearning. And he's so emotional, I loved that he cried, felt and hurt. And I hurt with him! Cried with him!
"There’s a sharp crack, but I don’t know if it’s the sound of my knees hitting the stone floor or my heart shattering. Mayah is a waterwielder. And … and I am the realm’s worst truthwielder. Head cradled in my hands, I weep. I weep for the woman I loved, the one who never existed. And I weep for the man I was, desperate to earn her love. I will never be him again."
As I said in my review for Tides and Thunder, I wanted more and I got more. And it's everything I needed and wanted. I wish more authors would write single POV books with the other POV as bonus content.
I can't recommend this series enough. It's absolutely fantastic.
