The Reckless Rockwoods #3

The Highlander's Woman

Rate this book
WARNING: Book contains a proud Highlander unwilling to surrender his heart a second time, and a half-Scottish heroine who, like most Rockwoods, is up to the challenge of making her man realize she's The Highlander's Woman.

Julian MacTavish’s honor made him guard a friend’s secret. But his lies to keep that vow make it difficult to prove his faithfulness as a husband. When a terrible inferno scars Patience’s body and mind, she becomes a recluse, widening the divide between them. But it’s her lack of trust, not her disfigurement, which sends Julian home alone to Scotland convinced he’s lost her forever.

Forgiveness in the face of death comes easily to Patience MacTavish, but the thought of being a burden to her husband does not. When a twist of fate takes Julian’s sight from him, Patience returns home hoping to make amends for not having faith in him. Pity is the last thing Julian wants from anyone, especially his wife, and it’s his turn to question her sincerity. Now, Patience must convince her husband that she’s come home for no other reason than love, even if it means arranging a highlander’s seduction.

Summary
Julian MacTavish, is in love with his wife, and is completely loyal to her. Even though his family, most especially his father didn't approve, he knew that she was the one for him. But when he makes a promise to a childhood friend, his word is his honor. But keeping his word means keeping some secrets of his wife. Patience adores her husband, but she struggles with jealousy and when there are certain signs of him keeping secrets from her, and spending time with a woman that obviously wants Julian. Patience doesn't know if she can trust Julian, even if she wants to. But on one fateful night, in trying to save her nieces and nephews, Patience loses her two brothers in a fire, and she ended up severely burned on one side of her body. Patience blames herself for her brothers' deaths, both of whom left behind children. Patience ended up scarred from her burns, and in her mind not worthy of Julian. Now its been almost a year, and she learns that he is blind from a carriage accident and it snaps her out of her own self-doubt and pity, and she sees how much she has damaged their relationship, and she will have to fight to win her husband over...because he will fight her every step of the way. Will Patience be able to prove to Julian of her love for him or will she lose him forever?

Plot and Story Line
The Highlander's Woman was a highly emotional story that just won me over from the beginning. It begins with Julian and Patience being newly married. Normally in most stories, we don't see this circumstance...usually that is the ending. So it was quite fun to see them starting at the beginning of their marriage and see how vital trust is needed in a relationship. Monica Burns is such a wonderful author, and I love how emotional her books are. The heat level she implements are usually higher than the mainstream historical romance, but its equally balanced well with emotion. This is the type of story that will have you spellbound and flipping through those pages as fast as possible. I read this in just a couple of hours, so that should tell you how much I loved it. It is very intense and has some moments that were pretty vividly pictured, and I needed a box of tissues to get through this one because it deals with some traumatizing events. This couple is really tested in this story. They both learn how love doesn't matter unless you have complete trust. This was a story that is one of those full belly satisfying reads, that even though it puts the reader through the ringer. I would highly recommend this book, and even though its the third book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone, but I so want to read the first two books now. If you have yet to try this author out, I would highly recommend her. I love the way she weaves her stories that are both sensual and poignantly romantic.
The Cover
This is a unique cover, I love the scene with the Scottish background and the gray clouds, it has a softer feel to it.
Overall View
The Highlander's Woman is a fast paced and intense story that is vivid in emotion, plenty of heat and passion, a mix of magic  and mystery; and seeing the power of healing in the face of trauma. A SPICY ROMANCE!!

The Highlander’s Woman is the third in The Reckless Rockwoods series but can be read as a standalone. I was looking forward to reading this novel having previously read and reviewed Ms Burns’ Mirage, which I loved. While it was no hardship to read The Highlander’s Woman and I enjoyed it, Mirage proved a hard act to follow. I admit to being a little disappointed, but I suspect that is more because my expectations were so high. This book does have some darkness and angst (which I really look for in a novel) but lacks the meatiness and intensity which initially attracted me to Monica Burns’ writing .

The story begins with the two protagonists already married and deeply in love, which is fairly unusual. But external factors start to sow the seeds of discord, and although they do not fall out of love, they begin to doubt each other as a result of the events that follow.

Patience Rockwood and Julian MacTavish meet, fall in love at first sight and after a whirlwind courtship, they marry. They enjoy a very sensual and sexually satisfying relationship but despite this, Patience fails to conceive in the first year of marriage and it becomes a matter of great concern to her although Julian isn’t half so hung up about it as she is. Among other things, her failure to conceive causes problems with Julian’s father. The Laird of Crianlarich is an autocratic and dictatorial man who took a dislike to Patience before he had even met her because he had already picked out a wife for his son, the young and beautiful daughter of a friend and neighbour. Although Patience is half Scottish and of good birth, she would never have been good enough for the Laird. After a visit to Julian’s home where the Crianlarich makes his dislike obvious and where she is introduced to the beautiful (and manipulative) young woman who was Julian’s father’s choice, Patience is demoralised and returns to London. Julian is then obliged to return to Scotland alone to carry out his duties as heir, and so their marital problems begin.

There follows a series of events which drives the lovers further and further apart. Patience is possessed of ‘the gift’ or in Gaelic ‘an dara sealladh’, the second sight, which all of the Rockwoods possess to varying degrees and which sets them slightly apart in society. It is one of the reasons that Patience is considered eccentric and why she believed she would never attract a suitor until Julian swept her off of her feet. ‘The gift’ rarely fails her, yet she has snatches of worrying images over a period of time which she cannot interpret, and for which, when the terrifyingly horrific details become reality, she blames herself. This sets in motion a chain of events that will alter all of their lives for ever.

I won’t go into further detail, but suffice to say that Patience and Julian have to learn to live with the fall-out of these events and also to learn to love and trust each other again. In fact, the book is really all about that journey of finding and getting to know each again other in a way they did not at the beginning of their love story. There is a point at which they are almost there, although Patience has yet to reveal her ‘dark secret’ I admit to feeling ever so slightly let down by its revelation.

I liked both characters very much; each is well developed and likeable although Patience is slightly annoying in her initial lack of self confidence, because she had no real reason to be. I mean she had the love of this gorgeous hunk who quite obviously admired and adored her.

Monica Burns uses lots of beautiful Gaelic words and phrases which I loved, although her attempt at a Scottish dialect did not work for me. The smattering of Americanisms, …sass – American term for cheekiness … bobolink – North American songbird – is also jarring, and I can’t understand why, when the author has gone to so much trouble to carefully research the liltingly beautiful Gaelic, she hasn’t paid as much attention to other aspects of the language. How difficult can it be to research birds native to Scotland? On the whole though, The Highlander’s Woman is a well-written story, albeit with a few too many misunderstandings for my taste. The protagonists do, however, get there in the end, and I will read more of Monica Burns’ work, as on the whole I like her writing style.

This is the the third book in the Reckless Rockwoods series and is it ever a spectacular read but highly emotional too, so I recommend a box of Kleenex nearby. This is my first book by Monica Burns so obviously you can read as a stand alone book or in series order.

Spring, 1897

Julian and Patience are newly married but as many can relate she has in-law problems right from the beginning, father-in-law not happy she is half English and still not pregnant with an heir. Also for not picking the Bride of his choosing, who is a childhood friend who has wanted Julian since they were teenagers and put thoughts of self doubt and Infidelity into Patience. Patience has the sight, but unfortunately it is not always clear and accurate.

Then due to Julian keeping a friends secret and catching him in lies, Patience fears the worse that her husband has taken a mistress which is the furthest from truth. Patience leaves Julian since he is keeping a confidence and she think the worse. Patience goes to live with her sister, but a horrible fire erupts and in saving her nieces and nephews she is badly burned and disfigured. Julian comes to her side but she rejects him as she doesn't want his pity. Then in a turn of events Julian has a bad carriage accident that leaves him blinded and when Patience runs to his side he reject her pity and sympathy as well. So Patience needs to prove too Julian that she has always loved him no matter what, but how is she suppose to do that? You will have to read this beautiful written story and find out.

This is a wonderful fast paced, page turner with so many twists and turns you wonder how this can be resolved with so much heartache and tragedy. I really felt for this couple to go through so many trials and tests at the beginning of a new marriage that should be nothing but happy and joyous. This was extremely well written and it had all the elements romance readers love in a spectacular Scottish historical romance mistrust, deceit, betrayal, misunderstanding, heartbreak, sympathy, miscommunication, forgiveness and love. I highly recommend The Highlander's Woman by Monica Burns it is truly a superb story about true love and sacrifice that you don't want to miss and will definitely pull your heart strings. You won't be able to put this one down and it's ones of those rare stories that's stays with you long after you have read it! Bravo and thank you Ms Burns for a brilliant read!

Great Scot! A passionate and endearing story of the love between Julian MacTavish and his half-Scottish wife, Patience, whom he marries against his father's wishes. Their marriage is passionate and steamy and wonderful, except that after a year there's still no heir in sight.

When Julian's father directs him to search for a childhood friend and promise to protect her secrets, Julian weaves some complicated half truths to keep from having to tell Patience of his whereabouts. It doesn't help that Patience has the "second sight" like many in her family and can see flashes of a red haired woman, a baby, a fire and carriage wheels, but has no way to understand what they mean.

Patience fears that Julian has been unfaithful to her while he was gone and she leaves him to stay with her sister's family. A terrible fire breaks out at her sister's home and, in saving her nieces and nephews, Patience is terribly burned on her face and arm. Julian cannot tear himself away from her side while she recuperates, but she eventually sends him away rather than have him stay out of what she thinks is pity.

Months later, though, when Julian loses his sight in an accident, Patience rushes to his side. She finally begins to understand what she's put him through when Julian refuses her help and fears her pity. Patience vows to find a way to make her husband realize that she's never stopped loving him and that they were meant to always be together.

I received a free ARC from Netgalley.com in exchange for my honest review, and prior to my acceptance of the book, I was approached by the author explaining that the sex scenes would be quite steamy. I expected to find a few over the top sex scenes and the rest of the book to be filled with nothing more than the main characters "desire" for one another, I was SO wrong!

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster! I cried more than once at the main characters suffering, and cheered out loud at how the author turned everything around. So now you ask why would I not give this book 5 stars? Simple, the ending. After everything the author put me through in this book, I wanted more out of the ending. I wanted more out of Bensmore. Seriously, if I had just found out I would be furious, but he was just... kind of... bleh. Ok, maybe that wasn't the ending, but close enough.

This was the third book in a series (however the first one I have read), the author managed to make the story stand alone (but yet to make you WANT to go back and read the previous books). I love angst...love drama... and this book had both in abundance!

Julian is a god among men... a Scottish man with a brogue and devoted to his wife Patience.
But....there is always a BUT.... he has made a terrible mistake in making a promise to someone to keep their secret and in doing so he is setting up his marriage for a devastating betrayal.

The book is amazing...it has love, passion and sadness and death... Our heroine is burned in a devastating fire, our hero loses his sight in another incident and the lies and secrets continue in keeping them apart.

I CANNOT wait to go and get the first two books in this series and hope that there will be a continuance of this wonderful family!

Patience and Julian have been married for about a year. Her father-in-law's behaviour leaves her feeling a little insecure. So when Julian lies to her and another woman claims to be his lover, Patience is deeply hurt. Before they can work it out, tragedy strikes. Grieving and badly scarred, she pushes Julian away. When Julian is blinded in an accident, Patience goes to him, wanting to make amends and to care for him. But neither of them is sure of how the other feels, and both are carrying emotional baggage.

This was one of my favourite books in this series. There was so much drama and it was quite emotional at times. I adored Julian and his Scots "accent". Yes, he was a bit of an idiot with his earlier behaviour, but it was within reasonable limits. He simply made some bad calls rather than dong anything truly awful. The hurt feeling, grief and anger were all quite believable, and the story was a bit of an emotional rollercoaster at times.

I do wish we'd been able to read more about Patience and Julian's earlier courtship/marriage. I feel like we missed out a little when they'd already been married for a year at the start of the book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book.

Julian and Patience

Wonderful story and great characters _well written.Julian and Patience were very much in love until Patience starting doubting his wisdom and then the fire happened at home. This caused a rift that forever widen for Patience sending Julian home to Scotland and refusing to see him. With lies and heartache between them who would know if they would get back together until Juliana accident which caused him to loose his site. but with Patiences guidance he finally learned to live with it until he regained his shot back. they forever had their HEA would have like to seen an extend epilogue into their future with possibly a child on the way but as readers we always want more. Good author and would highly recommend this series.

While this is book 3 in the “The Reckless Rockwoods” Series, it can be read as a standalone book. In fact, this is the first book in the series I’ve read… gasp, I know! I’ve heard nothing but awesome things about this series and after reading THE HIGHLANDER’S WOMAN, I want to go back and read book 1 & book 2!

I read this in one seating! I started at 11pm and finished at almost 3am! I couldn’t put it down. I wanted to know how things would end! The hero, Julian, is this strong, passionate and loyal man who loves his wife dearly. The heroine, Patience is sassy, smart and loves her husband immensely. She also has a gift that some may find a bit daunting and may not know how to handle. Their love story is one that seems like a fairy tale and she knows it. They met and almost instantly, they both knew… they were meant for each other and things between them moved fast. So they are still learning one another! However, as the blurb says, due to keeping a vow to a friend, he can’t tell his wife the truth and he’s caught in lies! Basically, someone planted the seed of doubt in Patience and it was enough to drive a wedge between them. While Patience asks for time to figure things out, two separate, terrible accidents occur that leave both Julian and Patience damaged and needing to figure out how they will go on with their own lives and if they have room for the other.

Monica does a fantastic job of showing the reader the loving and caring relationship Julian and Patience have prior to circumstances driving them apart, the tragedies that further increases their separation and the journey they both take to try to find their way back to each other. There are a lot of emotions in this book; from laughter to tears of utter sadness. Some moments that were heartbreaking and others were you smiled because the bantering between husband and wife was endearing and pure enjoyment! While there may have been a moment of “please don’t let this be a predicable ‘if he would have just told her’” type of book, Monica proves to the reader that Julian is much too man of his word and circumstances are not as simple as they seem. There are a few twists that readers will not expect! This becomes a breath of fresh air and one that readers will thoroughly enjoy.
If you haven’t read the previous books in this series, after reading THE HIGHLANDER’S WOMAN, you’ll want to! And if you have read the previous books and need to catch up on the series before the next book is release, what are you waiting for? THE HIGHLANDER’S WOMAN is a beautifully written love story filled with characters you’ll fall for, beautifully written scenes and enough steaminess that perfectly heat up the pages!

SUPERB ATTENTION GRABING HIGHLANDER STORY

I will start off by stating a fact, Monica Burns is one of the most talented and treasures of an author I have had the pleasure of reading. I mark my calendar for any future releases and try to have them the day of their release. The Highlander’s Woman was such a book. This is book three in the Rockwood series. If the reader doesn’t find this intense fast paced story filled with romance, mystery, hot passion, and magic more than satisfactory, there will be something wrong. This is one of the best heart felt romances I have read in a while.

With the heroine and the hero experiencing drama, forgiveness, and overcoming tragedies, the book will connect with almost anyone who has suffered from misunderstandings and heart break. I will not go into detailed information about the book other than to say these strong characters are eventually up to conquer any challenge life offers them. This story is not your run- of- the- mill fall in love and live without burdens happily ever after, but offers circumstances that many people will actually connect with.

Julian MacTavish and Patience met, fell in love, and married. But then certain circumstances and promises made makes it difficult to be completely honest and hold fast to vows made to other persons. Tragedy strikes and drives the couple apart leaving each one to deal with different types of scars that mar the perfectness. One faces death and the other faces a tragic accident that leaves them, in their own mind, less than whole.

Forgiveness to each other and themselves must happen to bridge the gap that grows ever wider between two people who love each other beyond measure. I will say that this is one of the best romances I have read this year and most assuredly looking forward to more from this author. I highly recommend this and any other release written by Monica Burns. She has earned a place on my auto buy permanent keeper shelf list.

The Highlander’s Woman is book 3 in the Reckless Rockwood Series by Monica Burns. The characters are so deeply in love but with numerous secrets to overcome you can’t help but read on hoping for the happily ever after ending.

Lady Patience Rockwood MacTavish has a special gift …the gift of sight. She begins to see images that make no sense and with no information to work with she continues to wait for their meaning to become clearer. In the meantime, her husband whom she loves soul deep begins to lie she believes him to be having an affair despite his denial of such happenings. Patience leaves her husband to visit her family and to have time to think. Tragedy strikes the family and the meaning behind some of the images she had been shown are revealed but with a cost not only to her and her siblings but to her husband. In fear and guilt, Patience pushes him away repeatedly.

Julian MacTavish will love no other woman than his wife Patience, but when he is asked to keep a secret his wife believes him to be having an affair. Hurt that she would do so; Julian becomes angry and allows her to leave him. When Julian hears how his wife has been manipulated into believing these lies, he sets out to discover who did it to prove himself innocent. When he nearly loses Patience, Julian fights hard to hold on, but when faced with failure he leaves for his father’s home. Tragedy strikes again and the remaining pieces of Patience’s vision having meaning. Now Julian needs Patience by his side.

Julian and Patience are both stubborn and hurt but to make their way back to the love their shared they must bare their souls. Ah, but Ms. Burns will not make it easy for her characters. With twisted secrets and more than one love triangle to conquer will Julian and Patience admit they belong together or will they drift apart in their pain?

I truly enjoyed this book by Monica Burns and hope to read the remaining books in this series as well as others.

#3 in the "The Reckless Rockwoods" series, but can be read as a stand alone. Fantastic, awesome, passionate and romantic! Fast paced. Well written, with challenging and charming characters. The setting, while not unique, is dramatic and effective. Filled with deceit, secrets, passion, tragedy, sacrifice, family, and true love through so many challenges, tragedy and selfless acts. The H/H are passionate, in love, but with so much tragedy, misunderstandings and interference, can they find their HEA.
One is disfigured due to fire, the other one blind due to a carriage accident.
A compelling, compassionate, powerfully written tale of love, sacrifice and realistic tragedies. There are so many twists and turns and facets to this story it is just plain awesome. You will be needing some tissues. "The Highlander's Woman" is so much more than a romance, it's about survival, the power of love, the passion for life and the power of family.
I believe this is the best yet of the "Reckless Rockwoods". OMG! I read this in one setting. It is a definite page turner. Ms. Burns has written a tale that will transcend the ages. Fans of Scottish Romance, Historical Romance, passionate stories about family, survival, and love, will absolutely adore this tale.
This is definitely a must read! A keeper! And one I will be re-reading. I absolutely loved this story. Highly recommended!!
Thank you, Ms. Burns for writing such an awesome story! Well done! I can't wait to see what you have in store for your fans next. Bring it on, Please.

The Highlander's Woman by Monica Burns *****

Patience Rockwood was on the shelf and quite satisfied with being a spinster in her large family. She then meets Julian MacTavish,a highlander, he is immediately taken with her and finds himself in love with this woman. She,too, falls madly in love with him. They really do not have a courtship but marry very quickly and know little about each other. Julian's father object to him marrying and English girl but Julian does not care.

Julian needs to return to Scotland to aid his father he does not tell Patience the nature of the trip and so the subterfuge begins. He finds himself torn between keeping a grave secret and telling his wife.

Patience begins to doubt his fidelity and leaves him. While at her brothers house, she is caught in a house fire and is badly scarred.

Take out your tissues cause she now refuses to see Julian and sends him away. He returns to Scotland but on the journey he is in an accident and becomes blind.

More tissues. To reveal more would be a spoiler but I truly loved this book. I love regency romances and this book more then fulfills a romance readers wishes.

Monica Burns pulls at your heart strings with her vivid characters. She is a master story teller.

Highlander's Woman is a story of love, sacrifice, and trust. After a whirlwind courtship, highlander Julian MacTavish and half Scot Patience marry much to the dismay of Julian's father who wanted his son to have a "true Scot" for his bride. Julian helps a friend and vows to keep her secret. Due to his secretiveness, Patience fears he's hiding his own infidelity. During their estranged time, Patience is badly burned in a horrible fire at the family home. Not wanting to be a burden to her husband and afraid for him to see her scars, she pushes him away. When Julian is blinded in an accident, Patience returns to him. But Julian wants her there because of love, not pity. What follows is a story of stubbornness, insecurities, and jealousy that can only be resolved by trusting completely in one another. Monica Burns writes a very compassionate and realistic story. While part of a series, it can definitely be read as a stand alone. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!
I thoroughly enjoy this book. Since I do not often read historical romances, this is very unusual for me. However, I like the fact that Patience and Julian are already married and in love when the book opens.

Unfortunately, the plot of the story sounds like a soap opera. You can read it all on the blurb of the book, so I won’t repeat. However, as melodramatic as this may sound, it really doesn’t read that way. In spite of the misunderstandings and the problems, it is always obvious that Patience and Julian love each other. I have never read anything written by this author before, but her characters do not fall into the often used traps as do some other romance authors.

However, this story is still very emotional and filled with a lot of angst. If you enjoy that, as I do, then this book is for you. In fact, I had to keep my tissue box nearby as I read this book.

I, definitely, intend to look into the other books written by this author.

How do you find your way back to the one that you love. Patience loves her husband Julian dearly but she has just caught him in a lie. He can't explain to her why he was with another woman. She can no longer trust him so she goes back to her family. Their lives are about to change forever and maybe love can't overcome everything.
Patience is hurt in a fire and she loses some family members and she blames herself, Julian tries to be there for her but she sends him away.
Can she go back to him even after all that has happened? Will he accept her help and can they find their way back to each other before it is too late.
A great story of love that can overcome major problems. A well written story and you will fall in love with the characters as the authors descriptions make it even better.
I have read a couple of her books and I will be back for more. I received a copy in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.

Julian MacTavish is madly in love with his wife as she is with him. When a jealous woman plants seeds of doubt in Patience's mind, they fight and she goes to visit her family. She needs time to think. Can she trust her Highlander? She's a Rockwood and won't give in to fear. Tragedy overwhelms her when a deadly fire sends Caleb and Devin plunging to their death and she is scarred by the flames. Broken in spirit, she hides from Julian even though she still loves him. Can their love survive such a tragedy? Monica Burns has outdone herself. The characters are wonderfully written. I was drawn into their story. I understood their pain and wanted them to overcome all the heartbreak. The Highlander's Woman is such an emotional story. My heart broke. Monica Burns wrote a deeply touching book that brought me to tears. The Reckless Rockwoods series is a keeper.

Monica Burn's writing is as addicting as someone who craves chocolate. Once you read one of her books you simply crave to read more. I have read all of Monica Burn's Books and love every single one of them. The pain, heartbreak, and love just flows from the pages of this story. I had tears running down my cheeks from beginning to end. The love between Julian and Patience is a love that is never ending. A love that lasts a lifetime. I recommend this to anyone who wants to read a love story that will have your emotions all over the place, but will make you sigh with happiness of an all enduring love. I am definitely looking for this book in paperback and buying it to put on my keeper shelf. Anything Monica Burns writes is a must buy. I received a copy of this book from Net Galley for an honest review.

This book actually had alot packed into the first few chapters. But it does not sizzle out, oh no this book keeps you glued to the kindle for the entire story.
Patience has a lot to deal with. Should she trust her husband's word, should she see him after she is injured? Should she then go to him when he is later injured in an accident? What are her feelings for him throughtout the story. Its such a rollercoaster!!
Julian tries to hard to be steadfast, but he is always loyal.

I don't think i have ever read a book that made me cry very early on in the beginning of it. It seemed as though everything went to very beautiful to the ugliest of the scenes, when you expect it to change for the better it spirals downwards. I couldn't be more engrossed in it, the drama, tragedies, romance, forgiveness and the passion. It was all so beautifully written. One of the best books i've read this year

THANKS TO NETGALLERY AND MAROLI SP IMPRINTS FOR THIS ADVANCED READER'S COPY

Monica Burns knows how to captivate her readers. The Highlander's Woman is an irresistibly delectable find. Julian and Patience are hopelessly in love with each other. However, it takes a tragic turn of events for them to understand the power of that love. Ms. Burns took a simple tale of lack of trust, secrets and uncertainties and turned it into an engagingly sensual story of love and devotion. I received an ARC of The Highlander's Woman in exchange for an honest review.
