Dark magic has returned to the continent of Brashen. Villages are destroyed. Families torn apart. And the darkness? It yields to no one.

When a monster bred of sharp teeth and talons is sent to attack her home, elemental witch, Andra, is given a pay for her mother’s supposed sins by winter solstice, or someone from her village will be brutally slaughtered each day thereafter. Certain of her own strength, she sets out into the continent for the first time.

But the continent is nothing as she’d imagined, and Andra finds only cruelty beyond her village's borders. She is stalked by monsters both real and imagined, and when a mysterious monster hunter chases her through the woods, she doesn’t know if she can trust him. But as the danger rapidly escalates, and it is clear to Andra she is woefully outmatched, he might be the only one who can help her before it’s too late.

Perfect for fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Witcher, ‘Embarkare’ is a story packed full of emotional self-realization, the vulnerability of trusting others, and the strength it takes to believe in your own abilities.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW
Aubrey Nymphaea’s debut novel, Embarkare, is the first book in The Woods of Brashen Trilogy, and I loved every moment of it.

From the very beginning, there is a lot of action throughout the story. I constantly found myself on the edge of my seat waiting for the next attack or wondering what Andra and those she picks up along the way would do next. The book took me through a range of emotions: there were moments that made me laugh, moments that nearly made me cry, and several times where I found myself thinking, “There is no way this is happening right now….”

One of my favorite aspects of the book were the characters. The personalities felt distinct and engaging, and I especially appreciated the way Andra was written. Even though she is a powerful witch, her insecurities remain present and her emotions are realistically portrayed throughout the book. It was refreshing to read about a female main character who discovers her power without suddenly becoming flawless. Her struggles and vulnerabilities made her feel authentic and relatable.

There were a few events and relationships that I would have enjoyed seeing developed more, but I don’t feel that this took away from the overall story or my enjoyment of the book. Instead, it left me wanting to learn more about the characters and their journeys. I do feel like because of the lack of development (for my preferences) the book read more young adult to me, although the content was not YA.

I would recommend this book to readers who are fairly new to the fantasy genre. While I would have appreciated more information about some of the monsters/creatures that inhabit Brashen, the author provides enough detail to spark the imagination while still allowing readers to take creative liberties in visualizing the world, its people, and its monsters/creatures. The twists in this book had my jaw dropping! Just you wait!!

Overall, I would definitely recommend Embarkare. Aubrey Nymphaea has created an exciting fantasy adventure filled with action, emotion, and memorable characters, and I’m excited to see what comes next in The Woods of Brashen Trilogy.

Well… that escalated. 😅

I was completely vibing with the magic, and the forest setting was the perfect backdrop for what I thought was a cute and whimsical witch story. I was having the best time in this world even with the monsters and creatures (yes, there’s a difference)… and then the last 20–25% showed up and I was not prepared 🙃🫠 like, I didn’t see most of that ending coming, which made the emotional damage so much worse.

How did this little witch story end up just absolutely wrecking my day? It’s been hours since I finished it (or maybe it finished me), and I’m still sitting here wondering what the actual eff just happened.

Needless to say, I’m obsessed. Huge thanks for the ARC—I will gladly continue signing up for this emotional abuse for the rest of the series.

Thank you again for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Enthralling debut novel. There is a struggle between light and dark magic witches. The FMC is struggling to find her inner strength and finds family along her journey to end the dark magic destroying the continent. The plot progresses along nicely and keeps the reader interested. The plot twist at the end leaves the reader wanting more of these character’s stories.

Guys, this debut was SO GOOD!! I loved our main character Andra and I always have a soft spot for a witch who loves healing people! Honestly, the monsters in this scared me a few times! The vibes were like The Witcher meets Throne of Glass. 10/10 recommend!

ARC Review

Embarkare by Aubrey Nymphaea completely swept me away. I’m usually not a fan of third-person POV, but Aubrey’s storytelling is so immersive that I was hooked from the very first pages. The imagery is absolutely stunning! I found myself desperately wishing it was fall so I could fully match the atmosphere of the story.

One of my favorite things about this book was Andra. Despite being in a fantasy world, she felt incredibly real and relatable. Her love of romance and adventure stories, her bond with children, and her dreams of traveling beyond the places she’s known made her easy to connect with. I especially appreciated that she reacts like an actual person would. Seeing corpses makes her sick, and while she’s brave, she doesn’t suddenly become an unstoppable hero who can do everything perfectly. Her growth feels authentic, which made me love her even more.

The side characters were another highlight. So many of them added depth, heart, and personality to the story. I always love when supporting characters feel important rather than simply existing to move the plot along, and Aubrey absolutely delivers that here.

I was also completely enchanted by the Traveler’s Inn. The worldbuilding is so beautifully written that I wanted to step right into the pages and stay there awhile.

One thing to keep in mind: if you get attached to characters, prepare yourself. Loving characters in this book gave me major Game of Thrones energy. Nobody feels completely safe. IYKYK.

Tropes:
🍂 Coming of Age
🗺️ Adventure Quest
✨ Magical Fantasy World
🏡 Found Family
⚔️ High Stakes
📖 Bookish Main Character
🌟 Character Growth

This was an easy 5-star read for me, and I can’t wait to see what Aubrey Nymphaea writes next.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (or your rating)

Thank you to Aubrey Nymphae for the opportunity to ARC read Embarake!

If you love witches, magic, monsters, and a strong female lead, this one deserves a spot on your TBR. As someone who’s a sucker for anything witchy, this book completely pulled me in. It even gave me The Witcher vibes (the Henry Cavill seasons, obviously 😉), and I was hooked from the very beginning.

Andra had my heart from chapter one. She’s compassionate, selfless, and always puts others before herself but don’t mistake her kindness for weakness. Watching her grow into the fierce, confident woman she becomes by the end was incredibly satisfying.

Then there’s Garrick… smooth, mysterious, and impossible to fully figure out. I loved watching his layers peel back throughout the story, and his character development was one of my favorite parts.

Can we talk about Quentin and Rayner? Everyone deserves friends like these two. They stumble across a girl they don’t even know and immediately choose to protect her, care for her, and treat her like family. They were the real MVPs of this story and completely stole my heart.

And Lucas… your loyalty and fierce love for your cousin did not go unnoticed. I adored every moment of that protective relationship.

Now let’s discuss that ending. One twist had been lingering in the back of my mind while I was reading, so I felt pretty proud when it happened. But the other one? Absolutely not. I never saw it coming, and my heart is still recovering.

Needless to say, I am already counting down the days until Book 2!

Embarkare by Aubrey Nymphaea is a gripping read that wastes no time pulling you in. There’s no slow buildup here; the story starts with intensity and maintains that momentum all the way through. It’s the kind of book that hooks you immediately and refuses to let go.
While I’ve read my fair share of elemental magic in fantasy, the way it’s portrayed here feels fresh. The interactions between characters and how they wield their abilities add a unique layer that kept things engaging. The world-building is another standout element; the setting feels vivid, immersive, and distinct. I found myself constantly wanting to learn more about the environment and its deeper workings.
The pacing is fast, and notably, it accelerates as the story unfolds. Rather than plateauing, the narrative builds urgency, pushing you forward until the ending arrives almost abruptly, like a door suddenly slammed shut. It leaves you both satisfied and eager for more.
My main critique lies in a familiar trope often found in fantasy with romantic elements. The recurring “I hate the way he makes me feel” dynamic, along with the possessive “Let. Her. Go.” moments, feels somewhat overused and predictable. While it adds tension, it didn’t feel particularly new or necessary here.
Overall, Embarkare is a compelling, immersive read with dynamic characters and a richly crafted world. Despite a few familiar romantic clichés, it delivers an exciting experience that fantasy readers will likely enjoy.

ARC Review for Embarkare, debut novel by Aubrey Nymphaea

If you like magical forests, self discovery stories, a mysterious MMC, quests, witchy vibes, and themes of mental health and residence—don’t sleep on Embarkare!

Characters:
Andra is a well-rounded FMC with wit, hope, love, resilience, and courage. This is where the writing shines, in Andra’s character development. We learn about her magic along with her as she embarks on her journey.

Gerrick is mysterious and you immediately just KNOW he’s keeping secrets. Only at the end do we find out the whole of it. Love a tough-on-the-outside but soft-on-the-inside MMC.

I wish there was more development of Lucas, Rayner, and Quentin. Seems like there’s so much left uncovered. But maybe we’ll get more in the next book!

Setting:
The world is enchanting. I found myself wanting to go back when I wasn’t reading. I was surprised how many magical creatures kept appearing—it made the world seem even more massive than we experience as readers. The kitzek who become her friends are especially endearing :)

Plot:
Great pacing, packed with action. But we also get crucial moments of reflection where we feel the weight of what Andra carries. It’s easy to cheer for her as she digs down deep to overcome challenges.

Overall I enjoyed Embarkare and would recommend it to fans of Shield of Sparrows and Spark of the Everflame. I’ll be watching for the next one!

𝑬𝒎𝒃𝒂𝒓𝒌𝒂𝒓𝒆, debut novel by Aubrey Nymphaea

One of my highly anticipated ARCs of the year, I still can’t believe I’ve finished it, and now am DYINGGG for book 2! My favorite part of this book is the elemental magic and potions that MFC Andra uses after years of practice with her mother. There are many relatable characters in this story and I love how the author gives juuust enough detail of the grotesque monsters so you can paint your own terrifying image in your head.

Andra is an elemental light magic witch who finds herself in an impossible position and faced with a fate she had no choice in. She must journey across the continent of Brashen, accompanied by courageous and stubborn characters alike, while attemping to avoid confrontation with the horrendous monsters whom are controlled by Vasara, the ruler of dark magic, and to ultimately destroy Vasara herself. Along the journey Andra comes to meet a monster hunter who gives her an odd sensation of discomfort-- or is it yearning? Will Andra succeed in the mission thrust upon her? Are her companions willing to stand by her side until the end? Enter the world of Brashen to see for yourself.

ARC REVIEW

When I tell you this book was amazing, 👏🏼THIS👏🏼BOOK👏🏼WAS👏🏼𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗭𝗜𝗡𝗚!!!!!👏🏼

I was immediately captivated by Aubrey's writing style and story telling. She had me on the edge of my seat, 𝗦 𝗧 𝗥 𝗘 𝗦 𝗦 𝗜 𝗡 𝗚 out over whether or not these beloved characters, that were literally running for their lives from monsters that relentlessly, and indiscriminately, decimated anyone and everything in their path, would make it or not. And it was exquisite! EXQUISITE, I TELL YA!!!

There was also not one character I didn't like. Well, that's a lie, the villain can suck it. But if I'm being honest, even the villain was creepy as hell and I was glad it was not me facing them, because yikes! However, all the characters were so great in their own way, and I especially loved how they all took care of each other. I just love the found family trope! Something else I really appreciated was how, at one point, the FMC acknowledged that she was being a brat, because she was, in fact, being a brat.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am so grateful to Aubrey Nymphaea for the opportunity to get this ARC because GUAU! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I cannot wait for book 2 because what the hell is about to go down after that ending?! 5 stars! 10 out of 10! Two thumbs up! All the fresh tomatoes and every other excellent rating you can think of 🤭

Embarkare completely pulled me into its world from the very first chapter. It wastes no time diving into the action, and each new challenge kept me eager to discover what danger or mystery waited around the next corner.

What stayed with me most was the world itself. Brashen is beautifully realized, with vivid landscapes and an atmosphere that feels both immersive and alive. Every forest, village, and shadow adds depth to the story, making the world just as compelling as the characters.
The magic carries a subtle, whimsical charm that contrasts beautifully with the darker elements, creating a setting that feels both enchanting and perilous.

Although the romance leans on a few familiar fantasy tropes, it never overshadowed the heart of the story. The adventure, emotional growth, and richly crafted world remained the driving force, making every step of the journey worthwhile.

An engaging fantasy that blends action, atmosphere, and meaningful character development into a richly imagined adventure. Readers who enjoy immersive worldbuilding, dark magic, and character driven fantasy will find plenty to appreciate.

🌶 1.5 of 5- for passionate kissing and 2 descriptive intimate scenes with play by play and named body parts.

⚠️ strong language, intense gore, torture, death.

❤️‍🔥slow burn.

📚 first in a planned trilogy.

The book started off a little clunky. The dialogue felt unnatural and some interactions were a little odd. This improved dramatically as the book went on. The relationship between Lucas and Andra was genuine and so sweet. All of the side characters were excellent. The banter with Gerrick was great.

I found the world really enchanting. There are a multitude of fantastical creatures and elemental magic. Our FMC is forced to learn to weild her magic and learn to fight and it is HARD for her. I love that she doesn't instantly start kicking everyone's butt. Andra feels so relatable when she struggles with inadequacy.

The last 15% is quite literally a crap show. My jaw fell open, I cried more than once and threw my kindle on the bed. I definitely recommend this book!

Thank you to the author for the ARC! These opinions are my own. I was not compensated in any way.

Received an advance reader copy for an honest review:

For a debut novel, Aubrey Nymphaea absolutely delivered! ✨ From the very first chapter, I was hooked and completely immersed in the world of Brashen.

One of my favorite parts was watching Andra grow throughout the story. That said, I would've loved even more moments between Andra and Gerrick. I'm a total sucker for slow-building chemistry, and I just needed a few more scenes to really soak in all those intense feelings. 🖤

And can we talk about that final 20%?! I was STRESSED. Every chapter had me flying through the pages, feeling every twist, every revelation, and every emotion right alongside the characters.

If you're looking for a fantasy that will pull you in, keep you invested, and leave you desperate to know what happens next, this one deserves a spot on your TBR. I loved my time in Brashen and can't wait to see what Aubrey Nymphaea writes next! ✨📚

✨✨✨✨ 4.5 star read for me! Thank you to Aubrey for allowing me to be an ARC reader. While I am appreciative of being chosen to ARC read, my opinions are my own.

Embarkare by Aubrey Nymphaea was such an imaginative fantasy adventure! The worldbuilding immediately pulled me in, and I loved uncovering the mysteries of the story alongside the characters. There was a great balance of action, emotion, and intrigue that kept me turning the pages.

The cast was easy to root for, and I especially enjoyed watching the relationships develop as the journey unfolded. While there were a few moments where I wanted the pacing to slow down and let certain scenes breathe a little more, it never took away from how invested I was in the overall story.

If you’re looking for a fantasy filled with adventure, magic, and characters you’ll want to follow on their journey, I’d definitely recommend giving Embarkare a try. I’m excited to see what comes next from this author!

Solid 3.75 stars but for this being her first book 4 stars. I did enjoy reading this book and I really enjoyed her writing. I’m big into fantasy and romantasy books. The characters were great, she definitely gave them personalities which I love. Even the side characters like the twins were fantastic!
What I felt was missing was more detail. The beginning of the book felt like it started off very quickly and would have loved more background. And about the two main characters relationship development throughout the book. The ending also felt very quick and rushed. It was a great story line! But the book could have definitely been longer to include missing detail which I would not have minded a longer book at all!

I will definitely be reading the second book as I’d love to see her writing progress and do want to know what Halle was to the characters!!

Aubrey Nymphaea is the author to follow!! She is going to be the next big name next to Callie Hart, Rebecca Yarros, and Sarah J. Maas. Embarkare is by far one of the best fantasy books I’ve read in a long time. Trust me, you must put Embarkare on your TBR!!

Embarkare is by far the best fantasy book I have read in a long time.

Without giving too much away, this story follows Andra, who is an elemental witch, as she goes on an adventure to conquer a dark evil that has overtaken the land.

There are monsters, hunters, magical creatures, and so much more. The story moves at a great pace as the author builds tension at all the right moments. The romantic elements feel genuine, leaving you wanting more. Most importantly, the author does an excellent job keeping the reader on the edge of their seat because nothing is as it seems. The ending will leave you begging for the next book!!

I appreciated that Embarkare really picked right up into the story and action from the beginning and flowed right through to the end. I also liked that while Andra was strong she wasn’t suddenly some super-badass just because she was on a mission. Although there were a couple times I wanted to shake her and tell her to get her head together.

“You’re letting your emotions control you again. Use them, Andra, but don’t allow them to use you. You can fight with your heart, but let your mind assist.”

I enjoyed the other characters introduced throughout the story (I hope we see Torgil again!) and the monster descriptions were… wow!

I was left with a lot of questions in the end so I’ll be waiting for book 2!

Thank you to Aubrey Nymphaea for the opportunity to read this ARC!

Embarkare follows Andra through her tumultuous journey to try to save her home and the people she loves.
It dives into the story immediately and there’s no confusing world building that has you questioning who’s who or how the world works. We start with cozy witch vibes and then delve into a darker, deeper world as Andra and her companions make their way North.
The ending has me trying VERY hard to wait patiently for the next book in the series to come out.
If you’re looking for witches, enchanting magic, romance, avenging loved ones, and unexpected twists, Embarkare is right up your alley.

I don’t know what to say apart from the fact that the last 20% of this book absolutely took me in a choke hold, threw me against a brick wall and shook me like a rag doll, then never stopped. And now it’s over? It just ended? What. Just. Happened?!?!?! It’s been a long time since I’ve audibly gasped reading a book. Here we are.

Apart from that tiny tidbit, I was OBSESSED with the elemental magic on this story and that it was half the length of your typical romantasy. A quick hit to my wittle baby heart 💔❤️‍🩹🖤 I am so absurdly in for the remainder of this series 🫠

OK... I really enjoyed this book.

Andra is such a great character, and the storyline was chef's kiss. I live for a good romantasy series with lovable side characters, and this one definitely delivered. And that ending?! Easily my favorite part.

The only thing I wanted was more—more character development, more relationship development, more details, more scenes. I loved the characters so much that I just wanted to spend more time with them.

Overall, I can't wait for the next book. I'd absolutely recommend this to any fantasy or romantasy reader. If the rest of the series keeps delivering emotional rollercoasters like this, sign me up.

My mind has been blown! I had no expectations for this book and this story exceeded all my expectations! What was that ending!?

I loved every relationship in this book and quickly learned not to get too attached to anyone or anything. The monster descriptions were genuinely terrifying and I was obsessed with the light vs. dark magical system. The pacing was incredibly fast without ever feeling rushed, and unlike many romantasy books, it never dragged.

I can’t wait for book 2 and for the series to continue!

Kudos to the author for releasing her debut book into the world!

Overall, this story has a lot of solid plot points. I saw a plethora of common fantasy elements interwoven in the pages. At times the story felt clunky while reading. Scenes were too quick, internal thoughts not as flushed out, etc. and this caused the storyline to move too fast in places that I, as the reader, wanted more build up or background or tension.

Thank you to the author for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Selected as an ARC reader for this book, and I loved it! The fmc is likeable and the story telling is easy to follow. Truly a mix between the Witcher and LOTR... with monsters, a fellowship of friends, and romance. My only complaint is that I wish there was just a little more backstory to some of the characters and developing of the romantic leads relationship.

Overall, this book was hard to put down and I'm hoping for a sequel to be released soon.
