Sedition takes up immediately at the end of Subjection. Cashiel and Sascha managed to get through Cashiel’s mother’s grasp and also worked out a way to be more than they started as – reluctant slave owner and Demoted sex slave. Now, Sascha is nowhere near as jumpy as he was originally and Cashiel is growing more human. Sedition progresses the storyline and is a better book than Subjection, which I really enjoyed. There is more chemistry, more character development and a push towards a conclusion in Succession with characters I've grow to love and characters I've grown to hate - I am so looking for payback.

"Look, mommy, I colored the 'B' blue, because that's what blue starts with, and that's what my name starts with."
"Good girl," Lisa smiles, petting her head.
“Good. Girl. Green!” Bella announces. “I’m gonna color the ‘G’ green! I bet I know more than Slave Sascha about letters.”
It seems my niece is quite a little bitch. “Wait till you get to ‘Z,’” I mutter."

Is it perfect? No. The research could be expanded and the whys of the elite backing a new system, when the Miller System suits them quite well, is not particularly detailed. I don't want a manual but I'd like some extended and logical extrapolation of Cashiel's data. However, the relationship and chemistry between Cashiel and Sascha is strong and the plot keeps me glued to the pages.

description

There are several threads driving this trilogy – the covert research project and funding of an alternative to the brutal Miller (Demoted) System and the complexities of the fact that Cashiel is the founder’s son. That he’s already been caught before by his mother and punished. That Sascha became Demoted to protect his Twin brother, Abriel. The growing affection and sexual heat between Cashiel and Sascha, and it is hot. Trust – the little secrets that are withheld because of a lack of equal footing between the primary characters. No matter how much Cashiel and Sascha are falling, and they are, Cashiel still owns Sascha. The reality that one could end in jail (again) and the other dead or, worse, tortured – because in this futuristic world there are worse fates than death. Cashiel and Sascha have to overcome a lot and lesser men might cave, especially Sascha.

There are warnings on the publisher's site but I'll remind anyone thinking of reading this series that it is not fluffy slave-fic. There are parts of this book that are nasty, particularly in relation to Oliver Torenze, someone from Cashiel's past.

If you open Sedition in the hope that Sascha is going to have an easier time than he did in Demoted you should probably just close it again and walk away. Although some things in Sascha’s life are set to improve it is balanced against horrors he must still live through.

Cashiel and Sascha are still working on improving the life of the Demoted citizens by changing the training system but it requires smarts and secrecy to go up against Cash’s mother.

This book had me on the edge of my proverbial chair the entire way through. A bit slow to begin with it soon picks up and you can’t help championing both men as they try to form a relationship in very difficult circumstances. It’s a tense story and even when things are going well you can’t relax as you know things are going to change and not for the better.

After putting himself in the position he finds himself in to protect his brother there should be elation when his family finally find him and it looks as though they want to make things better but Abriel is weak and instead of saving his brother he pits him against yet another enemy, the results of which will come back to haunt him.

The story now has two evil woman and I hope the author has some sort of karma planned for book 3.

After all the savagery and beatings that Sascha lived through in the first book it was difficult to watch him live through even more especially when he volunteered for some of it to clinch their business deal. Torenze is vicious and although he is the best man out there to help Cash go up against his mother his price is high and both men end up paying.

Towards the end of the book Alicia Cameron cleverly lulls you into a false sense of hope…again! It actually looks like all their hard work, risks taken and savagery endured is going to pay off. By 95% my stomach was turning at the realisation that in the next few pages it was all going to go to shit and boy oh boy did it end with a bang.

There really isn’t anything more I can say except when the hell is Book 3 coming!!

I was very drawn to this story when I started it and that feeling picked right back up when I began this book. Sascha and Cash are doing well at this point, with their precarious relationship, both sexual and working. But, things are getting trickier for these guys as Cash’s work gets more involved and more people are needed to be brought into the fold. Cash must put his trust in Sascha in order to keep him safe, even though doing so will make him even more of a target. It is much easier for Sascha to play the part once he knows the stakes, but he ends up suffering quite a bit for the cause.

To add insult to injury, Sascha’s brother resurfaces to save him from his master. Sascha is torn with wanting to go with his family and not wanting to leave Cash. Trust comes into play again, and once again, it is exploited. Thinking it the best way to keep Sascha safe if he is out of the picture, he pushes Sascha to go with his brother. Thankfully, Sascha’s smarts help him out once again.

Cash’s evil mother is getting nosier and closer trying to pull more of Cash’s strings. Unfortunately, it is the same man who was one of Cash’s mom’s top trainer/torturers, who they need on their side. His payment? 12 hours with Sascha. Even with the stipulations and warnings in place, Sascha endures horrible things at the hands of this man. My heart broke for him all over again.

There is a lot going on here, even though it seems as if not much time has passed. Things are getting more and more risky as Cash’s research unfolds. People are needed to back the research/plan, but trusting anyone enough to bring them in makes things a bit exciting. The guys are having to work harder than ever to keep things hidden and keep up appearances, and the anticipation of screw ups is very high. I’m even more invested in this story and these characters and really look forward to seeing where this goes next.

OMG, I can’t believe that finally, we can follow more of Sascha and Cash… and I must say, this sequel is a roller coaster of emotions that will keep you glued until the last page!

So… I’ll try to write this review without any spoilers… lol…

I loved and sometimes hated Cash and Sascha's interactions since the first book. I mean, Cash learned the hard way how he “should” treat a demoted, a slave, and that was not always the best way for Sascha to be treated… but between themselves, they found a middle ground, their own way to be together.

It’s beautiful to see how Sascha becomes confident in himself again under Cash's tutelage… And how Cash becomes more “human” after meeting Sascha.

Then, when finally it seems that things are working out for them, their past comes to try and separate them…
I love how Alicia can wrap us in her story, and I’m unashamed to admit that Sascha brought me to tears more than once (in both books, by the way)… I can’t wait to read the next book in this series and for Cash and Sascha to finally have peace to be together.

I hope you have a great time reading this book – I did!!!!

'....There’s not even a word for what I’m feeling right now. Something between horny and spiteful and grateful and curious. Try finding that on a feelings chart....'

My emotions were all over the place, filled with angst, anger, and hope. I really love a book that challenges my feelings and makes me wrestle with ethics, especially when the two main characters are gloriously sexy like Cashiel and his slave Sascha.

Usually I get grumpy when books end on a cliff hanger, but the heart thumping panic I felt had me reaching for the third and final book in the series. I recommend you have Succession on hand for this rollercoaster of emotions, betrayal and espionage.

In the previous book, Sascha had sacrificed his freedom for the sake of his twin. In this book, his twin has finally managed to track him down, with very unexpected consequences.

Sascha and Cashiel are falling in love with each other, however both remain in constant danger from outside forces. Sascha's relationship with his master is complex and Cameron's writing captures the psychological depths around the impact of slavery with insight that explores the complications of relationship between to non equals. This is by no means a simple romance.

Dubious consent is at the forefront and never forgotten. The danger is palpable. There are consequences for every action, good and bad in this dark alternative universe. Torture and death are very real and fear is a powerful motivator that heightens emotions and sensations.

Pain both physical and emotional leave lasting scars and both men's fear of rejection, betrayal, or humiliation is beautifully captured. Sedition explores themes of consent and autonomy in the relationship between Cashiel and his lover and slave Sascha. If your lover is your slave can they ever be truly honest. Sascha's status as a slave is unquestionably subordinate and it leaves him vulnerable even if he believes he trusts Cashiel implicitly.

Philosophically it can be argued that a relationship between slave and master cannot by definition contain truly consensual sex - it is a logical deduction; however I share Cameron's fascination with the power play. A slave may have no human rights and their ability to choose revoked, but this does not deny their desires, opinions or thoughts even if it is politic to not always make them known.

Sascha's freedom to choose and his autonomy is curtailed but his passions remain as does the option to act on them regardless of consequence. Regarded as property, there must always to be negotiation, boundaries, and clear expectations even when the attraction is mutual and Cashiel believes he has found a lover whose intellectual capacity meets his own and whom he finds irresistibly sexy.

Told in the first person switching alternatively between Cashiel and Sascha's perspectives, it is nice to see Cashiel changing from the isolated character of book one and behaving in a warmer manner with his lover, even as the net tightens and the pair risk imprisonment, separation and death if their plan to overthrow the Miller system of slavery is uncovered.

This is a scary and thought-provoking book, and even the cliff hanger ending can be forgiven. Highly recommended, this is probably not for those with a delicate disposition or with triggers around rape and sexual assault, but for those who like dark themes and to wrestle with their ethics, this is great stuff.

It took me several months to read. I was partly pacing myself awaiting the final instalment of the trilogy in November 2015, and partly savouring the delight and intensity of the writing. All three books are now available.

Sedition is the second in the Demoted series and I have not read the first book. Despite my jump, I was not lost or confused with characters or plot. There was a bit of a backstory dump in the first chapter which was thick, but critical to my understanding of the character histories. That backstory could have been smoothed.

Sedition's voice drifts from distant overview to very intense close third and back again. I've never been fond of distant voices and I don't think Sedition gains anything from the review/telling moments. It does help skip time along, but it kicked me out of the story a few times when things could have been more engrossing.

That being said, the moments of close third were stunning. I love how strong the visuals were and I often got lost in the story in these scenes.

I finished Sedition in one sitting. The plot is compelling and the characters are sharp. I wanted to see more of the political jockeying that they played, the details of deception are always interesting to me and much of them were downplayed or skimmed over.

The actual details of the research in question (what, specifically, they were researching, how they went about it, what kind of results they were seeing, etc.etc.) were missing entirely. I may be an odd one out, reading medical science journals is a past-time for me, but even a glimpse into this very important piece of the plot would have been nice.

The concept of Free/Demoted is an interesting one and I want to go back to book one on the change it details this process a bit more completely. That said, I will pick up book three if it comes my way because the slave/hurt/comfort trope gets me every time.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

Sedition is another wonderful book by Alicia Cameron, and it picks up where its predecessor, Subjection, left off. Sascha and Cashiel are captivating characters and it is extremely easy to get drawn into their story. They are a complex couple, with neither man exactly what he seems, but both of them dedicated to the burgeoning relationship they have begun to create. As with Subjection, Sedition has some technical quirks that are bothersome at best. Though written in first person from both Cash and Sascha’s points of view, there are frequent tense changes, often mid sentence. This is irksome to say the least, but once you get used to the writing style, it doesn’t overly detract from the overall enjoyment of the book. And gone are the viewpoint changes mid-chapter that so dogged Subjection, which made the overall flow of the book a great deal more fluid.

Sascha sees a great deal of person growth in Sedition. He goes from being a cowed slave to a productive and almost equal member of Cashiel’s attempt to dismantle the Miller System, a brutal slave training organization run by his mother. When Cashiel finally reveals the truth of their work, Sascha accepts the dangers of what they are trying to do, even when Cashiel attempts to protect him. He is brave and conflicted and, as a reader, it is easy to connect with Sascha on almost every level. He is far from broken or bowed and it’s a pleasure to watch as he continues to find strength and courage at every turn.

When I was diving into this book I knew that it won't be easy...and in some way it wasn't. I became fast reader with this book as always when the book keeps me on the edge all the time. I'm glad for what Cash and Sasha had in this book. It wasn't easy and there were parts where I had to take a lot of chapter breaks because it was really hard to read it. But I did it for Sasha. Becuase he's amazing human being. Selfless and you have to ask yourself if you'd do the same in those situations. He's my new hero and I hope that in some way he finds his happy ending.
I was waiting whole story for the second shoe to drop and it did. The second book did end with cliffhanger. I knew it and that's why I waited for the third book to be released. So Right now, I'm stocked with enough chocolate and another drugs to help me go thru last book. I know I'm gonna love it, but I'm scared what has to Sasha do to reach the end.

Another thrilling installment to the Demoted Series, this one even better than the first. Sedition was such a brilliant story; full of plots and sub-plots, twists and turns, family drama and a rollercoaster of emotions. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.
