In Pentworth supplies of electricity, gas and water are mysteriously diminishing. Then, suddenly, a force field surrounds the town, through which no-one can pass, and the population is completely cut off from the outside world by an unknown force.
James Follett (not "Follet") was an author and screenwriter, born in 1939 in Tolworth, England.
Follett became a full-time fiction writer in 1976, after resigning from contract work as a technical writer for the British Ministry of Defence. He has wrote over 20 novels, several television scripts (including episodes of the BBC's Blake's 7), and many radio dramas. Follett was one of the 400 most popular British authors, measured by the numbers of books borrowed from public libraries in the UK, having spent 11 years in the public lending right's top two bands of authors.
This is a fascinating look at how a group of people, adults and teenagers, cope with being confined under an invisible, unyielding dome. This group of about eight main characters starts out, as most societies do, working together to solve the problem of no water, electricity, or help from the outside. Then the personalities, and large egos, begin to show themselves and it's downhill from there. Although the book is fairly long, 539 print pages, it was a fast read. This is the first book in a trilogy and I've already purchased the second, "Wicca." My only complaint with this edition is the overwhelming amount of typos, missing words, and the general crappy job of editing it received. Avoid this edition if you can. Other than that, I highly recommend this novel. Very well done.
It's rare for the first novel of a series to so grip me as this one did. IT's the characters that did it; vivid, bold, with their own agendas, attitudes and a great deal of individual sexual preference...
The story is of course gripping, and Follett clearly writes for the adult market. A refreshing thriller to read, given the amount of YA I've done in this category recently.
Really enjoyed this book, it kept a more leisurely pace than a thriller, allowing us to learn who the characters are and what motivates them. I found the plot easily held my attention, though I felt like this novel was a prologue to the rest of the series, merely introducing the elements. This makes me very excited for the work to come.
Really loved this book and series It really captured my imagination and couldn't put it down All three books are wonderful Top 5 of my all time favourite books
