A very short story. 10 pages to be exact. There’s a bonus story afterwards as well. Burnt Offerings follows a young girl living with her abusive step father who has a keen interest in fire.
A sixteen-year old girl is the victim of horrific abuse at the hands of her stepfather. She has always been drawn to fire; Perhaps for her own purification. However and thankfully, these urges to hurt others are far and few in between, though these urges do get the best of her while espying a loving family in a pristine home. Sexual release is imminent and she construes a ghastly plan of revenge, one that will have you reeling from it's depravity. A great short from Mr. Cook.... The bonus story "Anomalous Perigee" is a dreamily composed tale of a man who laments his once happy life and true love. Suicide seems to be the only way to relieve such strife and retain normalcy after death. I really enjoyed this one....
Burnt Offering is dark and vicious. My first by Cook. This book also has a bonus story (I didn't care as much for) and an interview with author. A good starting point for new readers like me.
