Huckleberry Finn

Rate this book
Who wants to live in a house, wear clean clothes, be good, and go to school every day? Not young Huckleberry Finn, that's for sure.
So Huck runs away, and is soon floating down the great Mississippi River on a raft. With him is Jim, a black slave who is also running away. But life is not always easy for the two friends.
And there's 300 dollars waiting for anyone who catches poor Jim...

The original version of this story was one of my favorites that I kept returning to when I was younger, although I think most of its significance was lost on me then. This adaptation was an oversimplified and much shortened version of the story and I think the excitement and adventure was lost.

Then again, that's coming from someone whose idea of a good time is to paddle on a river in canoe for eight days straight.

new words: sawyer, widow, lace, gang of robbers

good expressions:
His clothes were old and dirty too, and two of his toes were coming through his shoe.
Jim fell to his knees when he heard Huck's voice. It was a big piece of luck that Huck didn't died , Mostly it was a lazy, comfortable kind of life.

good for beginner to read, i enjoyed reading even though the stories bored.

Didn't like it high school, didn't like it now. I feel like the characters are one dimensional and the way Mark Twain writes is not a style I enjoy at all.

Terrible as an audiobook. I actually went through the book in print just to more thoroughly understand sections. Part of me really wants to give this 1 star. Except for any dialogue generated by this book, I could easily do so. I'm rating based on my personal feelings after slogging through this, my boredom and annoyance on having to listen to the dialects, and not on the standing of the book in rankings of great American literature. I also question just how well Twain succeeded in his message as I think Jim's characterization kind of proves that Twain was not able to rise above the racist beliefs so common in those days. But it was an attempt, more than most others were doing back then, and I respect and value that. I am extremely happy that this is behind me and will probably never read another Twain book again.

1. Publisher, Title, Level
Oxford Bookworms Library, Huckleberry Finn, Stage 2

2. Reading Time
60 min

3. 7-word summary
money, father, escape, the great Mississippi River, Jim, adventures, Tom

4. Discussion & Question
Q. If you would escape from here and could go anywhere, where would you like to go?
A. I would like to go to the place where I could sleep. It is because I do not have enough time to sleep recently.

5. What I thought about the book
This book made me feel the importance of my friends. It is because Huck and Jim helped with each other in spite of the difference of their races. When they had some troubles, Tom came to help them. Therefore, I thought I should cherish my friends.

2.7/9=100min
3.Finn escape river ship with Jim free
4.Please don't hurt me! I've always been good to dead people!
Jim thought Finn was dead, so when he met him, he said like this. This sentence made me laughing.
5.This is a story about Finn's escaping. First part, I couldn't understand clearly because there were lots of character who relatives of Finn, so I couldn't identified them. But from middle part, story became his escaping, it was easy to understand. However, last part, there were some complicated story about his family again, so it became difficult again. But escaping part, it was exciting adventure on the raft, and I like adventure, so I was comfortable with middle part.

3 Tom Sawyer, gang, clean clothes, run away, slave, friends, 300 dollars
4 a)This story is about Huck Finn. He doesn't like to wear clean clothes and be bood so he runs away.
b) Huck and a slave establish a good relationship throgh their trip. I like this scene.
5 Huck is white and a slave is black. They are different races but they form a close friendship then I learn the importance of friendships afresh. I wonder whether I have friends like Huck and a slave.

My introduction to Huckleberry Finn was from my fifth grade elementary school class. The teacher read a chapter a day from this book. It was like waiting for your favorite TV soap opera but better. Started a life long love affair with the writings of Mark Twain. I think it is absolutely criminal this great novel is banned in some schools by some idiots that see a few objectionable words and totally miss the point of the work. Don't even get me started!!!!

No. Though he liked to spend time under the tree all day long, I like to live in the big house and wear new clothes.
2. Do you like the adventure?
No. I like something exciting, but I don't like something dangerous. I am conservative.

This version focus on the adventure of escape and not focus much on Jim's slavery. So you don't actually learn about slavery much from this version.

I love Mark Twain, but this book is just too tightly tied to its setting. I can't relate or even appreciate most of the concepts. There are better Twain books.

I can imagine about this book is an oversimplified version, but enough by the moment, for me to have some idea about the whole history.
