Shifting Love

Rate this book
Constance O'Day-Flannery is back, and better than ever with this new tale of magic and love.

Maggie O'Shea knows that because of her dark past, there's no place for love in her life. She owns a successful store in Philadelphia, where she uses her special gifts to help the people she meets. Though this doesn't fulfill her, she is content. Most of the time.

Entrepreneur Julian McDonald runs an empire. He's rich, cynical, bored-and not interested in relationships. He was in love, once, but since her death, there's been no space in his heart for anyone else.

Maggie knows as soon as she meets Julian that she could fall in love with him. But a secret society devoted to bringing the world back into balance has a mysterious agenda for Julian-and doesn't care about the heart's wish of a vulnerable shapeshifter...

I haven't read anything by Constance O'Day-Flannery since high school, but I've found that her books still have the same feel. They end with a sense that "all is right with the world".

My favorite of her time travel romances was This Time Forever from 1990. At the end of the book she included my now favorite poem "Desiderata" from Max Ehrmann. The portion of the poem she highlighted is still my favorite:

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.

When I finished that book I remember holding it to my chest consumed by how things all worked out. (Hey, I was a teenager.) I won't say I clung to this book quite that way, but it did still have a hint of that feeling. The perfect combination of fate versus free will.

I labeled this a paranormal romance containing shifters, but that really doesn't give the right impression. The shifter component wasn't as significant as the whole idea of steering destiny versus free will.

I should just back up and tell you the characters (primary and secondary) are quirky, flawed, and extremely appealing, and the romance was perfect in its imperfection. *g*

If I was on LJ, this review would be getting the stream-of-consciousness tag. I jumped all around the place, but I hope some of that made sense. *g*

Recommended for those who like a hint of fantasy with their romance.

"if your dreams turn to dust, vacuum. And then begin again." P. 68

"Thousands of years ago, when man decided in his arrogance that God must resemble him, all references to the Goddess were obliterated and women were no longer seen as equal with men. History will reflect this, but it is important you understand this about power. The female is powerful. She nurtures life and brings it into the world. No matter how hard those men tried to wipe the Goddess out of the minds of people, it couldn't be accomplished and never will be, for there must be balance in power. Male and female. Even in our divinity. If one principle is missing, power can corrupt quickly." p. 278

Shifting Love is wonderfully written story. Constance O'Day Flannery has done a magnificent job of blending the modern world with the supernatural world.

This book is the apitami of an author that knows how to write a fantasy novel that relies heavily on politics but does not shove her own beliefs down your throat. There was no bias to either party. In fact specific parties were never mentioned.

If you're looking to escape into a world where secret societies exist to keep balance throughout the universe, and fall in love along the way, then I would highly recommend picking up this book. If you do, I guarantee you will not be able to put it down.

"real friends are those who, when you've made a fool of yourself, don't feel that you've done a permanent job."

"how do we explain to the american people that one CEO walks away from a pharmaceutical company with a compensation package of 72 million plus 76 million in stock options. thats over 150 million dollars that your friends pay their top man on ONE year, but they can't lower the cost of medicine so some elderly woman in kansas can have her cancer medicine AND eat that month."

"what you had with her never got the chance to really be tested {because she died}, so its always going to seem perfect in your mind and nothing and no one can ever come up to that perfection for you. but you know thats not realistic. people arent perfect. relationships are messy."

"nice is a curse! how many nice people stand up for themselves? how many people take all kinds of shit not to rock the boat? whoever taught us that being nice is a virtue was a manipulative bastard. what is so wrong with being honest? expressing how you really feel? if you're pretending to be nice when you dont feel nice, then you're not really being you. so who is being you? nobody. you dont exist."

she is a small business owner, she is a shape-shifter, she is a bit of an under-cover agent for a secret organization and her assignments revolve around her dating. it is her job to be the love of a man's life before the real love of his life can touch his heart. in short, she makes it possible for hurt hearts to love again.

aw.

only she falls in love with her assignment. she discovers her biological father. - not the same fellow, by the way.

it was cheesy and i rolled my eyes a bit. mostly, i liked it though. i found the style of writing compelling.

plus hey i'd totally shift into a lioness if i could. it's a fantasy i can get behind.

Very Unique. This is the first novel I've read that dealt w/ shape-shifters. I really enjoyed the political drama as the back-drop, again - very different and refreshing romance. As someone who is into supernatural romance novels, I would recommend this one.
