She is charged with preventing the old gods returning. He is responsible for stopping a vicious serial killer.
When their investigations intertwine, terrifying truths are revealed, and their own dark secrets unravel. Can they put their differences and suspicions aside before it’s too late?
Demona is a powerful, ancient demon who has spent her life hiding a dangerous secret: she can shapeshift into a human. Forced to move between identities in a world where discovery would mean death, her survival has always depended on control; of her power, her nature, and the selective truths she shares with her rag tag team of misfits known as the Dread Squad.
Asmodeus is human and leads the elite police unit hired to solve a series of unsettling murders plaguing the Capitol. Mysteriously gifted with strength and speed, Az has dark secrets of his own and is as infuriating as he is impossible to resist.
As frictions amongst the factions rise, and the threat of the old destructive gods looms, tensions rise. Demona discovers Az isn’t what he seems. Az suspects Demona might be the killer he hunts. It gets more complicated when Az unknowingly starts to fall for Demona’s human form, and Demona can’t resist his allure.
Can they overcome their distrust to save the realm? Will their growing connection survive their secrets? What price will have to be paid to save them all?
Who Should Read This: Perfect for readers who love: dark magic, slow-burn tension, morally grey characters, enemies-to-lovers romance, and found family dynamics; where happily-ever-afters must be earned the hard way.
I received this book as an ARC, and I'm forever grateful to @J D Burns Author for letting me dive into this stunning debut! It’s a perfect blend of crime and fantasy, offering everything you could want: spice, found family, enemies to lovers, and a slow burn. I've honestly never cried while reading before, but this one brought a tear to my eye. It was shocking yet incredibly captivating. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment and can’t wait for book 2! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Just wow, this book was amazing from start to finish—definitely unlike any fantasy book I’ve read before. An absolute must-read!
An incredible debut novel from JD Burns which follows a multi POV, Enemies to Lovers fuelled Romantasy that could be likened to the works of Stacia Stark and her Kingdom of Lies Series with a more Paranormal spin.
This took such an incredible unique twist on what we know fated mates to be, instead of that all consuming fated love and forever, a mate bond requires so much more depth where that person can be your destiny or your downfall and only time will tell.
JD Burns characters are well written, with a balanced and detailed world building with a hit of spice throughout that compliments the plot rather than derails it. We follow Demona and her dread squad on the hunt for realm walkers whilst the Asgarth Guard are hunting for a serial killer. When paths cross, they must work together despite not trusting one another. Work together OR die together. Secrets are spilled, bonds are formed and a mystery is yet to be solved.
I can’t get over how well written and consistent this book was for a debut author breaking into the fantasy world and with such a unique magic system and take on mate bonds I can see this going far with those who enjoy this genre.
Demona and her dread squad, the story that follows is one you will not want to miss out on.
Secrets of Obsidian completely consumed me. This wasn’t just a five-star read—it was one of those rare books that has you laughing, crying, gasping, theorising, and desperately turning pages at 2 a.m. because there is absolutely no way you’re putting it down.
From the very first page, the world-building hooked me. The prologue introduces the creation of the gods in such a fascinating way, with Mother Nature creating the Mother and Father gods, the creation of different species, political divisions, and an ancient god war that immediately raises so many questions. It’s one of those openings that makes you think, I need to know everything.
The world itself is phenomenal. Vampires, angels, demons, witches, fae, wolves, liffions, gargoyles and so many more species all coexist with their own politics, histories and alliances. Despite the complexity, it never feels overwhelming because everything unfolds naturally throughout the story.
And then there’s the mystery.
A serial killer is targeting citizens across every species with no discrimination, children are disappearing, there are whispers of realm walking, ancient forbidden magic, mysterious runes, political corruption, and secrets layered upon secrets. Every single time I thought I’d figured something out, another twist completely changed everything.
The pacing is absolutely perfect. Every chapter ends with another question, another reveal or another emotional punch that makes it impossible to stop reading.
Then we have Demona…
I am obsessed.
She is easily one of my favourite female protagonists I’ve ever read. Powerful enough to rule an entire city yet refusing power for herself. Confident without being arrogant. Feared by almost everyone around her while secretly carrying impossible burdens. Watching her balance being both Demona and Desi was fascinating, and every chapter seemed to reveal another impossible secret she was desperately trying to protect.
The reveal that no demon should even be capable of shifting into a human was brilliant, and every new revelation surrounding her identity only made me love her more.
The supporting cast is equally incredible.
The Dread Squad genuinely feels like a family. Their loyalty to Demona is beautiful, especially once you learn why each member follows her. Every backstory hit me emotionally. Simi’s trauma, Reece’s devastating loss, Jem’s past, and everything Demona had done to save them made me understand why they’d follow her anywhere.
Speaking of Jem…
My heart genuinely broke for him. His love for Desi is so pure, even knowing it isn’t returned. Watching him struggle with that was heartbreaking.
Farah and Darion absolutely stole my heart. Their relationship develops so naturally, and every scene between them made me smile. Their fate bond, their vulnerability with each other, and Darion promising to stand beside her through her nightmares… I melted.
Then there’s Asmodeus.
What started as suspicion slowly became respect, then fascination, and eventually one of my favourite relationships in the book. His chemistry with both Demona and Desi is incredible because every interaction carries tension, banter, mutual respect and underlying feelings.
Their first date?
Absolutely adorable.
The interruptions?
Infuriating.
The confession?
PERFECTION.
“I would burn the world for you.”
Excuse me while I scream.
This book also isn’t afraid to absolutely destroy your emotions.
The warehouse explosion had my heart racing.
Finding the imprisoned creatures…
The lifeless liffion cub…
Henry…
The burial scene where Demona digs the grave herself instead of using magic…
I was genuinely crying.
The author somehow balances incredible action with deeply emotional moments that make every character feel real.
The magic system deserves special praise too. Obsidian stones, communication bracelets, blood magic, magical signatures, fate threads, realm walking, ancient runes and forbidden rituals all weave together into something unique and endlessly interesting.
But what impressed me most was how every reveal actually mattered. Nothing felt like a twist for shock value. Every secret connected to something bigger, making the overall story feel incredibly well planned.
And then came the ending…
I genuinely don’t think my heart has recovered.
The arrests.
The betrayal.
The sham trial.
The public execution sentence.
The desperate escape.
Michael.
The missing obsidian.
Gerrard.
The fortress.
The revelation after revelation after revelation.
Every chapter somehow raised the stakes even higher.
The final scenes left me with more questions than answers in the absolute best way possible, and I immediately needed the next book.
If you love fantasy filled with gods, demons, mystery, romance, found family, magical politics, and twists that leave your jaw on the floor, Secrets of Obsidian needs to be at the top of your reading list.
Without question, this is a 6-star read and one of my favourite fantasy books of the year.
Now excuse me while I impatiently wait for the sequel because I absolutely NEED answers.

First and foremost a giant thank you to J D Burns for an early copy of this amazing book!
This was such an incredible read from start to finish! I was completely addicted and obsessed from page one. We are immediately dropped in to this intense supernatural murder mystery with some amazing political intrigue. I was lost in the atmosphere of this world and couldn't get enough! The level of thought and detail that go into the different elements is exquisite. The world building is fascinating and set up beautifully. Information is trickled in like bread crumbs through each chapter and I'm constantly propelled forward so I can devour more. The magic and different powers explored is absolutely fantastic! There are so many unique takes on familiar concepts, it was such a thrill to read. The Fate bond is so different than anything else I've read. I loved exploring that and the shapeshifting element. This book made me nerd out with all of the cool magical elements and research! It is so detailed and in depth, I was completely engrossed in everything.
Demona is amazing, quite possibly one of my favorite FMCs ever. She is so unapologetically powerful, and her antics had me chuckling at times and in awe at others. She experiences so much and I felt her emotions so deeply. She is so complex, I loved exploring Desi as another part of herself, two halves of one person. Her tension with Az is so well done, I loved every moment of them together. He wears broody so well, and I adored seeing his evolution through the story. I knew immediately I was going to love these two but I wasn't expecting to love every single member of the Dread Squad and Asgarth as well. It's incredible how much all of the characters manage to shine even when you have the imposing force of Demona. Found family is always one of my favorite tropes and this one is absolutely no exception. There are multiple groups and alliances forming and I adore every single one. I love the multiple POVs, seeing the separate relationships and different context each time. I am so invested in every single on of these characters.
Not a single moment of this feels like a debut novel. J.D. Burns has such an immersive, thorough, and descriptive writing style I never would have believed that this is the first (of what I hope is many more) book. There is so much emotion weaved in every chapter. One moment I'm kicking my feet with joy at a cute romantic moment, and the next I'm in pure anguish and a sobbing mess. There is so much raw, realistic emotion and is nothing short of incredible. I was transported into this beautiful world with all of these amazing characters and I never wanted to leave! This was an absolute page turner and I can't wait for the next book and every one after.
Secrets Of Obsidian had me laughing, gasping, almost in tears (hard to crack this shell) and up until 3am.
The mix of serial killer and fantasy is such a refreshing concept. Add amazing world building and character development...what more do you need.
I absolutely love Demona & Desi, she is an amazingly strong, feared FMC. Being an ancient demon who has the ability to shift into a human is another fabulous concept by J. D.
We follow Demona as she and the Dread Squad are protecting the realm from the potential of returning old gods. They are her found family who will protect her life and heart. The relationships and banter between characters is fabulous.
When her world collides with Asmodeus the slow burn begins...along with our obsession with As!! He is the leader of the elite police force who are searching for a serial killer. The killer is indiscriminately claiming lives and children are going missing.
Demona and Asmodeus both hold secrets, which adds to the distrust and tension, but they must work together.
Can not recommend this book enough. So excited for book 2!
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers Slow burn He falls first Found family Morally gray Politics Ancient forbidden magic Mysterious runes
🖤 Ancient Gods 🖤 Secret Identity 🖤 Enemies-to-lovers 🖤 Found Family 🖤 "Who dunnit" vibes 🖤 Multiple POV 🖤 Fated Bonds 🖤 Touch her and 💀 🖤 Yearning 🖤 Serial Unaliver Hunt 🖤 Supernatural - Angels, Demons, Vampires, Fae, Shifters & Humans
When you read the epilogue and get excited you know your in for a good read. This book had me hooked from the start, Demona and Desi are such interesting characters to read I cannot wait for more of their story in the next book. The writing is so good, the world building flows and the magic system is full of intricate details without being too complicated. There are so many plot twists that will have you questioning who you can trust and its all wrapped in slow burn tension between Desi and Az.
Jem's jealously of Az is brilliant, that mountain of a man is hanging on every breath from Desi hoping one day she'll chose him, the yearning is top tier. The ending though... are you serious?! It will leave you craving the book and so much more from Demona, I've grown really attached to her, she's an absolute force but is such a softie at heart.
Secrets of Obsidian What an incredible debut novel! I feel privileged to be one of the first to read it. A romantasy with a unique plot/magic system and a murder mystery which plays in to my love of true crime too.
Tropes Romantasy Multi-POV Fated mates Found family Serial unalivers Unique magic system Enemies to lovers
JD Burns’ writing flows so well and has clearly been well thought out. It left me being unable to put it down. The imagery and world building is incredible. As a reader that can struggle to picture scenes in my mind, I really appreciated this.
I loved the multi POV, it allows the reader to connect on a deeper level with the characters. You will find yourself invested in certain characters and silently cheering them on. The spice that is sprinkled through the book is well placed and means the book doesn’t revolve around it, instead it compliments the story and strengthens bonds.
We follow Demona, an ancient demon, and her Dread Squad who are hunting realm walkers and the Asgarth trio, a group of mercenaries hunting serial unalivers. When it becomes clear that the two are intertwined, the two groups reluctantly band together. But will they be able to put their mistrust aside to work together?
Secrets will be revealed, unique fated bonds will be explored, family will be found from trauma and plot twists will keep you guessing. Will the connections made be strong enough to survive?
I can’t wait for book two to find out what happens next
5 🌟 Thank you so much JD Burns for sending Secrets Of Obsidian to me and allowing me to be part of this exciting journey 💜🖤💜🖤
This is my very first ARC and my very first Dark Romantasy
I didn’t know what to expect with not reading this kind of genre before, granted took me a little while to get into but then “bam” I was reading every moment I could get! Last thing at night and first thing on a morning and as much as I could inbetween!
I was turning the pages faster than my bank balance disappears on payday!!! I was loving it! 💜
Secrets of Obsidian is full of so many twists and turns, the thrills and spills, keeping the suspense high and making every chapter literally impossible to put down!
This book was full of intrigue and adventure , a mystery and an urban fantasy in one !
In a city where each race has their own section, humans, demons, witches, vampires, fae, people are going missing. Desi and her crew must work with the police to find out where the lost are going.
This is a wonderful modern fantasy world, dark and sexy! You will gasp and kick your feet, feel thrills and emotional turmoil. This is a rollercoaster of a book and I absolutely recommend for all lovers of dark fantasy who like a little bit of spice and a whole lot of yearning!
I was hooked from the start. The plot is something I have never come across before in books I've read. The enemies to lovers are hard-core. They fall in love and nearly die a few times before the truth comes out, and Az and Desi may be torn apart forever. I am sitting on the end of my seat waiting for book 2.

I loved this book straight away. My love for this book got deeper the further I read. I couldn’t put this book down. I was thinking about it when I wasn’t reading.
The characters in this book are so unique and well written. The plot twists that kept coming kept shocking me. This was a captivating read and I cannot wait for book 2. If this isn’t on your TBR it should be.
Wow this book had be hooked from beginning to end. Had be guessing and I did not work it out on who was involved can’t wait to read what happens next and to see the characters develop more. Amazing 5star read one of the best books I have so far this year

Secrets of Obsidian completely exceeded my expectations!
The writing is smooth, confident, and really easy to get lost in. Strong characters, a gripping pace, and just really well put together overall. It has that “just one more chapter” effect, where you find yourself constantly pulled back in and wanting to read more. The world-building is also brilliant- detailed enough to feel immersive and paint an intricate picture, but never overwhelming.
Genuinely impressive for a debut author- I can't wait to see what book 2 brings
Read it cover to cover on Sunday. Was fast paced enough to keep me going without stopping. The interweaving storylines kept me interested, and the world building was great. Nice to have a strong female lead! Plenty of laugh out loud moments and can’t wait to get further in to the plot and get to know the main characters further.
Thank you so much to J.D. Burns for the amazing opportunity to read a physical ARC of Secrets of Obsidian!
From the very first page, J.D. Burns hooks you with amazing writing, great pacing, and a story that keeps you guessing until the very end, leaving you completely speechless at times.
I absolutely loved the combination of crime and romantasy; it made the story so unique and captivating!
The multi-POV narrative brings this world to life, featuring incredible depth and some remarkably strong female characters, including a total badass FMC. Add in a slow-burn romance that is executed to absolute perfection, and you have a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
Life, sickness, and other obligations tried to slow me down, but if I’d had my way, I would have devoured this in a single sitting. If you love tense, captivating reads with unforgettable characters, put Obsidian at the top of your TBR!
I absolutely LOVED reading Secrets of Obsidian Book 1!
From the very first page, I was hooked and knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down. The characters are so vividly written that I developed such strong emotions, both good and bad, as their stories unfolded.
The plot is full of twists and turns, keeping the suspense high and making every chapter impossible to put down.
I can’t wait to see how the story develops in book 2!
Wow! Just wow! This book has taken several common fantasy book themes and turned them on their head. Fate bonds aren’t just someone to fall in love with and be with forever, they can also mean someone linked to your destiny, or even your demise. Which pushes the stakes higher every time you know theres a bond at play.
These characters are complex, have depth, and have genuine on page growth. These are relationships and dynamics I want to follow into book 2, I’m excited to see where J D Burns takes these characters & how they evolve.
There are characters to love, hate, cheer for, be annoyed with, and every emotion in between. The story is fantastic with twists and turns, and the descriptive language used throughout kept me hooked and totally in their world page after page. Cannot wait for book 2.
First of all, a huge thank you to J.D. Burns for trusting me with an ARC of Secrets of Obsidian. It has been an absolute privilege to be part of this incredible journey. ♡
From the very first chapter, this story completely pulled me in and refused to let go. What starts as an immersive fantasy quickly becomes an emotional whirlwind, blending brilliant world-building, unforgettable characters, shocking twists, and a unique take on familiar fantasy tropes. Nothing felt predictable, and I was constantly left thinking, "Just one more chapter..."
The world is beautifully crafted—rich in detail without ever becoming overwhelming—and the writing is confident, fluid, and incredibly easy to lose yourself in. Every page added another layer to the story, making it impossible not to become emotionally invested. The world building was not heavy but perfectly timed.
The characters are where this book truly shines. They're flawed, complex, and beautifully developed, with relationships that evolve naturally and feel incredibly real. I laughed with them, rooted for them, questioned them, and completely fell into their journey. Their bonds were fantastic 👏
And then came those final chapters...
I genuinely wasn't prepared.
The last few chapters had me gasping, crying, and riding an emotional roller coaster 🎢. Every twist hit harder than the last, and by the end, this book had broken me in ways I wasn't expecting. I sat staring at the final page trying to process everything I'd just experienced.
For a debut novel, this is nothing short of remarkable. It's gripping, emotional, addictive, and leaves you desperately needing the next book within seconds. ( as the author is well aware from our conversations!)
Thank you again for allowing me to be part of this amazing journey. I cannot wait to see where this series goes next. ❤️📖 Now my heart needs a little rest ♡ but please hurry up with book 2!
I was kindly gifted an ARC of this book. My Review is honest and the words my own.
Well, who doesn't love and ancient, tough as tits, bad ass FMC!? I am absolutely in LOVE with Demona. She's tough, strong, resilient, feared and powerful. She makes some questionable choices but with conviction and loyalty to her Dread Squad. And an old (okay SUPER old) FMC rather than the usual teenage meek ones? A breath of fresh air!
Our MMC is everything I want in my book boyfriends. Broody? Check. Falls hard? Check. Protective but willingly to let our badass FMC do what she does? Check! And I am feral for the fact that the FMC is mega amounts more powerful than the MMC!!! The power dynamic just works!
Now, that ending was unnecessary, especially as it means I have to wait until book 2. So much happened towards the end and I can only imagine that things are going to descend into more chaos in book 2.
Secrets of Obsidian was an actual breath of fresh air and I devoured this book! It was easy to read yet had the world building and character development needed to help picture myself there and put myself in the characters shoes. I was on edge during some parts, wondering what was going to happen next, which is unusual for me because I can usually guess at the plot line from quite early on.
I really can't wait for book 2 in this series! So very well written and an incredible plot line.
This is my far one of the best books I have read this year and I would give it more stars if I could. It’s set around the kingdom that has many different beans living within it and is ruled by a being that has hidden secrets. Some factions are trying to destroy the Life they know by trying to raise the dead and to do so they start to kill and kidnapped the young of the different species i’m not gonna go into too much detail as it would spoil the story. There is a group of Warriors who are trying to stop this happening and then you the fight ahead to try and stop this happening, led by a fearless leader. The concept of the story blew me away as I have not read a book like this before. The characters are complex and that only adds to the dynamics of the group and who they have to deal with and the individual stories around them makes you realise what they bring to the dynamics. There is space in the book but it isn’t overwhelming and hasn’t relevance to the story and you love to follow both the love story and the trials that they have to endure. I couldn’t put the book down and once spoiler is there is another book and I really can’t wait to read that because that ending really wants you wanting more.. I would highly recommend to everyone to read this book as I’m sure you will love it as much as I did

I received an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Wow, what a fantastic debut from J.D. Burns. This book had me gripped from start to finish & I was so sad when it ended. This was so well written, from multiple POVs, the flow was smooth & the pace ebbed & flowed perfectly. I liked Demona & her Dread Squad, how they were proof of different species being able to work together & how they all genuinely cared for each other. The Asgard did seem pompous, with that air of superiority about them. It was really interesting to watch how both sides preconceived conceptions were challenged when forced to work together. The secrets Demona & Desi keep along with Asmodeus's, come out naturally & the actions of the others when revealed are believable. By this point, you know the characters, know how much they've each developed in themselves & as part of the wider team. The build up of the chemistry between Demona, Desi & Asmodeus is at times, painful to watch, but understandable & at times frustrating, none willing to admit to the pull, the connection between them, but when it happens, they don't hold back. I ended chapter 14 with 1 word in my mouth, I started chapter 15 with that word in writing in front of me. I was so emotionally invested in the characters & the story & will admit to tearing up at times. The ending promises there are more secrets to be revealed & I can't wait for book 2.
The premise of one character having two identities is unlike anything I've read before, and I absolutely loved how fresh it felt within the romantasy/dark magic genre.
The multi-POV chapters really helped me connect with more than just the FMC and MMC. The Dead Squad is such a tight-knit group, and their bond genuinely shines throughout the story.
One of the things I was most excited for going into this book was a powerful FMC, and Demona did not disappoint, she's an absolute badass. Az is everything you'd want in an MMC: broody, fiercely protective, with just the right amount of possessiveness. It's actually pretty rare for me to be just as invested in the FMC as I am in the MMC, but Demona completely stole the show for me.
I also loved that the spice was sprinkled in towards the end rather than taking over the plot. It was the perfect balance and let the story and characters remain the main focus.
Overall, this is an incredible debut from JD Burns, and I genuinely can't wait to get my hands on book two.
Thank you for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. You should be so proud of what you've created!
I feel incredibly lucky to have been one of the first people to read Secrets of Obsidian.
From the very beginning, I was completely immersed in the world J.D. Burns has created. The world-building is incredibly detailed and easy to get lost in, and I loved uncovering its secrets alongside the characters.
I also loved the way the story blends fantasy, mystery, and romance. There were several twists that genuinely caught me by surprise and more than one emotional moment that stayed with me after I'd finished reading. It's a story that kept me completely invested from beginning to end.
The biggest compliment I can give this book is that it reignited my love of reading. It reminded me exactly why I love getting lost in a story, and when I reached the final page, I immediately wanted more.
I cannot wait for book two and to see where J.D. Burns takes these characters next. If you're looking for an immersive fantasy with memorable characters, an intriguing mystery, and plenty of surprises along the way, Secrets of Obsidian is absolutely worth picking up.
I recieved an advanced reader copy of this book directly from the author J.D. Burns. This is my honest review.
I really enjoyed this book and the writing style. J.D. Burns writes like a seasoned author despite this being her first novel. The story follows Desi, a FMC with a life-long purpose to prevent the 'old gods' from returning to wreak havoc on the world. When citizens are killed, she is forced to 'team up' with Asmodeous to solve murders that seem to intersect between human and supernatural.
The world-building in this book is soft, but deliberate. There are clear explanations and descriptors for the different magical creatures, humans, and the parameters of the magic. I personally love this. It is a multi-POV read but Desi and Asmodeous are the main characters.
This was my 8th ARC of the year and only the 2nd ARC I've given 5 stars to. It was an excellent read and I'm looking forward to book 2. This is definitely worth a read if you enjoy fantasy.
Video reviews available via Booksta and BookTok: @samantha_bookshelf
It has magic, different creatures, but did it feel like other similar books? No! It was so unique, and really well written, J.D Burns did really well with this book, and I can’t wait to read more in this series.
For me, I had some struggles in my life, so I felt out of it for a while, so I had some struggle reading, and getting back to the book. But it’s really well written, so eventually it sucked me right in. And this is the only reason it only get 4 stars, because a part of the book I really felt out of it and had some struggles. But I’m sure in a reread it would be a 5⭐️.
This is perfect for readers who like/love * Romantasy * Enemies to lovers * Something unique * Well written books * Never a boring moment in a book * Shifters/different species (demons, humans, gargoyles, angels, witches and so on) And so much more.
What are you waiting for? Go read it! Add it to your TBR! It’s definitely worth reading. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
