More like a 3 1/2 star rating, but higher than an average 3-star. 🤷♀️
Another unique and captivating adventure. This was definitely bent more on the relationship bonding side than any quests or delving into any real magical abilities. It does set the scene for following books to come and lays the foundation of characters, feuding parties, their cast system, and a special bonding which takes place. Overall, it's an enjoyable read.
There were a few areas and characters that were built up I got interested in... then, ??? I don't know if it was explicitly left out hoping the reader buys book two wanting to see if the answers are found in there perhaps? IDK? I found this part frustrating. Other than this...

DNF @ 89% Isn’t that sad? I am at the supposed climax of the story and I just cannot finish it. This is written as a rough draft than a published work. I will say it’s a step up from AI generated books so she gets 2 stars for the published rough draft!
The story is not flushed out. I am confused on the society. There are two classes. The nobles, who have hoarded the magic for centuries by “reading the magic patterns” and the rift draft, aka everyone else. Who, by the way, can never look a noble in the eye. Why? Because the noble says so?? 🤔 Where is the evidence to back this up? Back to the important part, If a noble and a servant can have a soul crossing, then how come soul crossings are not happening randomly amongst the rift draft? If a “pure” form of soul crossing’ like our dear prince happens to read about, is based on two people doing a good deed for one another and touch soon after their magic is stronger than ever. (like we experience with our Elias and Liora). Then why is there a bond committee? Why is the prince not bringing this evidence forward to show that their union is the way to go about soul crossings. Again, why the bond committee in the first place? What keeps them in power? Oh wait! The author tells us the prince just won’t step up and accept the crown his late father left him, but why?? What’s holding him back…we are never told. Just go with it, the author says. 🙄
I also struggled with characters doing a complete 180 degree in their personality. Serafina describes herself as a calculating, high society individual, “carefully cultivating this façade” are the exact words she uses to describe herself. Everyone knows a soul crossing bond has to maintain a positive healthy relationship. However, Serafina and the Elias do absolutely nothing to cultivate a healthy relationship between the two of them and they’re embarrassed, and hide the fact that their bond of magic is so weak they can’t do a simple spell together?? Their husband and wife and their is no evidence they even care for one another. Again, where is the evidence!! But back to the point of Serafina. She is jealous, upset and does nothing about it for a whole week! Well, she does hid in a broom closet and over hears no les laughing at her. If she is truly cultivating a path for herself for power, she would have allies, power of her own but all we get is her running to mommy and daddy and no dialogue between them. Then when the bond committee forces Elias to choose, he chooses Liora. Does Serafina gets mad, fight for it. Nope, jumps in and defends his decision? She’s OK with her magic being ripped from her?!?!? She will lose everything and she goes along with it and ends up being the martyrs? Where is the evidence concerting this behavior?

Thirdly, the only one who ever speaks of the “Unbound Movement” is Adrian. Why? Are they legitimate? I understand his role in the princes assassination attempt. But the 3 assassins are never questioned, never brought up again as to why they were there or who sent them. Elias’s role is to protect the Prince, and he does nothing about the assassins. Nobody does! We don’t even hear if they were sent to the dungeons or died when they were thrown across the wall. It’s just brushed underneath the rug and we move on. But! When Adrian is told to assassinate Liora, he suddenly has a change of heart and explains, “even though he was trained for this, he can’t do it”. Where is the training? What did he have to endure? We never know and it would provide content to how this society works. But, don’t forget that when Adrain tells Liora they will kill her tonight this society is suddenly something Liora knows about. How? Why are they never brought up by someone else before now? And it’s so obvious who is running the Unbound Movement.

When one decides to read a free audiobook with minimal reviews, one accepts a certain amount of risk. I was pleasantly relieved with this one; it was honestly a quite good and enjoyable read. Most of the not very good free books I subject myself to inexplicably contain cows. This one contained absolutely no cows! Truly a literary triumph and a sign of its quality! Huzzah!
I found the magic system to be rather fascinating. It's what caused me to want to read this and it didn't disappoint. You can only have/use magic if you marry someone who is magically compatible. So magic is basically love, emotional intimacy, trust, and connection. It felt more tender and intimate than most fated mate implementations because the magic itself is a connection that they feel and draw from. Except the Council of Bonds has corrupted these organic love matches into a means of controlling the nobility, crown, and populus via controlling social mobility via access to advantageous arranged marriages. Anytime things go wrong or the lies they tell about the bonds are shown to be false, they blame the completely innocent individuals it happened to to further solidify the Council's power. I had a love hate relationship with how horrible they are specifically how they're both very obvious about their badness while also being obviously icky. It was slightly infuriating to have to watch everyone just go along with the council's BS for an entire book with no relief/resolution.
There's a lot of plot lines going on in addition to the main one. I personally enjoyed this. Is it objectively a lack of focus that's probably not ideal? Yes. But it gave an interesting depth and immersive quality to it. I think these will be continued in future books in the series. Could the pacing of the main plot have possibly been a bit faster? Yes, but the chill vibe of it was sort of relaxing. I felt like it mirrored the leisure of noble life.
For a free audiobook, it is exceptional. For a general romanticy, it totally met my expectations. I was especially pleased that the magic system was as interesting and thought provoking as I hoped it would be.

The first in the series, this fantasy is about being bonded through the level of the soul where magic unites between couples for power...yet, it seems as if it's only for the noble families.
Servant and unbonded, Liora, however, causes disruption.
There was a good cast of characters, each suited to the plot - good and not so good - but each role is not set in stone.
I liked the concept, especially the magical elements, but it's choice that really matters.
Well-written, engaging and entertaining. I look forward to finding out more.

4.25⭐️ This is a unique story concept coming from someone who occasionally picks up fantasy books. I love where the direction of the overall plot is going. This is a great start to the series.
There is a heavy focus on the world and the story building. Unfortunately because of this, the focus on the character and their background kinda took the backseat. Definitely enjoyed the multiple POVs and perspectives, which helped clarify important moments.
I can see how other fantasy books have inspired this one. I’m excited to continue reading and learning more about the characters/world.

This book is a hidden gem, my only grievance is that it seemed repetitive at times, using the same phrasing from different points of view throughout the book. Interesting ideas in the fantasy genre, a different spin on magic.

Easy read! It kept me wanting to read more and more. Nothing too crazy in terms of a shock factor in it, but hoping the series progresses!
